Individuals, Institutions, and Markets offers a theory of how the institutional framework of a society emerges and how markets within institutions work. The book shows that both social institutions, defined as the rules of the game, and exchange processes can be analyzed along a common theoretical structure. Mantzavinos' proposal is that a problem solving model of individual behavior inspired by the cognitive sciences provides such a unifying theoretical structure. Integrating the latest scholarship in economics, sociology, political science, law, and anthropology, Mantzavinos offers a genuine political economy showing how social institutions affect economic outcomes.

I am a Greatgrandson of Otis A. Glazebrook, New Market Cadet, Company-D and a Great-greatgranson of Francis H. Smith, a founder and first Superintendent of V.M.I. (for fifty years). I thought this book painted a realistic portrait of cadet life at V.M.I. and the events preceding "The Battle". The cadet's story provides good lessons, particularly for today's pampered adolecents, who think that their lives are tough. The description of the cadet's eighty mile march from Lexington to New Market in the rain, mud, in wool uniforms, leather shoes, etc. might be food for thought....I particularly liked Gindlesberger's protrayal of Cadet Stanard.
The difficult part of reading history for me is to remember that a day was just as long then, as it is now. It is written in the form of a historical "novel", this gives the cadet's story life, as oppossed to dry historical facts. "Seed Corn" is a quick read and does a great job telling of the great bravery of 257 Cadets, who became MEN, in the best sense of the word, in four hours, May 15th, 1864.

Glorified Historical Fiction.......2006-07-09

The Battle of New Market, VA was an unusual event in the Civil War, because it was the only time in American history that active military school cadets participated in battle. So, I wanted to get more information on this battle, and when I got this book, I was excited to read it. Unfortunately, that excitement did not last long. The author chose to write this account of the battle in the style of a novel, even down to putting words in the characters' mouths in the form of running dialogue. I do not question Mr. Gindlesperger's sources, and the appendix was intersting to me. The book just read more like "The Killer Angels" than a factual account of a battle.

A Must Read!.......2000-06-13

This is a fascinating account of the battle at New Market. The author vividly portrays the people, emotions, conditions, and actions. I could not put this book down because the story is completly enthralling. Even if you are not a Civil War/military history buff, this book is an execellent read. You experience the hopes of the cadets and the realities of war. I highly recommend this book to anyone!

Don't Miss This One!.......2000-04-07

I recently attended a symposium where the author spoke, and after it was over I purchased this book, along with Escape From Libby Prison. After I read Escape From Libby Prison I thought there was no way Mr. Gindelsberger could do any better, but I was wrong. I liked this one even more than his first. I can only guess how good his next one will be. Anyone who reads this should definitely get both his books. You won't be sorry. This story had humor, fear, compassion, and everything else a good story should have. I guarantee you'll be moved to tears as you read the account of the battle and the search for friends after it was over. What a story!

Engaging but sometimes dull.......1998-10-24

Mr. Gindlesperger has turned the story of the Battle Market from the cadets' points-of-view and succeeded terrificly. The research is apparent through the many details the suthor discloses and makes the text all the more enjoyable and real. The scenes are vivid and you can feel the horror of searching for a brother or friend on the field after the clash is over. The book is only lacking in two areas (the arrival of John Wise to the field hospital after the battle and through the first appendix with the list of the corps and some board information). Yet even there, the weaknesses come through with little strength. The text is extremely well-written with few gliches in storyline and information in the first appendix. All in all, a beautiful story and worth-while read.

Description:
Individual share futures contracts have been introduced in Australia since 1994. Initially, the contracts were settled in cash. In 1996, cash settlement was gradually replaced by physical delivery. This study investigates the effects of the settlement method change on Australian individual stock and its futures markets. Specifically, we examine whether return and volatility of each market, correlation between the two markets, basis behavior, and hedging performance of futures markets differ across cash settlement period and physical delivery period. We find that, after the switch from cash settlement to physical delivery, the futures market, the spot market, and the basis all become more volatile. However, each individual share futures contract becomes a more effective hedging instrument. The improvement in hedging effectiveness is particularly impressive for the most recently established individual share futures contracts.

Great Book for Novices.......2006-03-13

I needed a book that would explain the basics and give me the confidence I needed to draft contracts. This book hit the spot. The author, deftly explains the basics of contracts, boilerplate terms and what not to do. It was simple, funny and very informative. I was specifically looking for information on business sales contracts but found a lot of information about stock purchases, employee contracts etc., things I will need to know more about in the future. The CD was also very helpful with a wealth of document examples. I would heartily recommend this book for others like me, newcomers to the business world. Once you have the basics or wish to delve deeper into the legal jungle then you will need a more indepth text. However for those without a legal background and in need of a concise, easy to understand and informative book on business contracts, this is the book for us.

Robert Kausen has written a thought-provoking book that could help any business person get greater leverage in the workplace. I am a business consultant and lead Leadership Seminars for business executives and their companies. Really dissapointing..........2007-02-17

I bought this book as a senior psychology major, hoping to gain insight into my possible career options. Instead, I found a very brief and basic book that would be more appropriate for a highschooler toying with the idea of applying to colleges with a major of psychology in mind.

This book spends large amounts of space discussing the college application process and a few pages briefly discussing career alternatives(When I state 'briefly', I mean aprox 4 sentences for each career option). Additionally, it consists of some autobiographical prospectives from individuals who graduated with a BA in psychology. Unfortunatly, the perspectives offered are not really realistic portrayls of the mainstream career choices. Counseling with a MA, PsyD, or PhD is not really discussed, nor is a career in research.

I would NOT recommend this book unless you are a junior or senior in highschool considering a major in psychology. Even then, I would suggest you try to borrow it from the library instead of paying the high cost.

Wow what a clear window into Psycology. Every question is answer. A must read for anyone interested in Psychology.

This lecture presents research on a general framework for perceptual organization that was conducted mainly at the Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Systems of the University of Southern California. It is not written as a historical recount of the work, since the sequence of the presentation is not in chronological order. It aims at presenting an approach to a wide range of problems in computer vision and machine learning that is data-driven, local and requires a minimal number of assumptions. The tensor voting framework combines these properties and provides a unified perceptual organization methodology applicable in situations that may seem heterogeneous initially. We show how several problems can be posed as the organization of the inputs into salient perceptual structures, which are inferred via tensor voting. The work presented here extends the original tensor voting framework with the addition of boundary inference capabilities; a novel re-formulation of the framework applicable to high-dimensional spaces and the development of algorithms for computer vision and machine learning problems. We show complete analysis for some problems, while we briefly outline our approach for other applications and provide pointers to relevant sources.

Description:
Neuroimaging studies of written and spoken sentence processing report greater left hemisphere than right hemisphere activation. However, a large majority of our experience with language is face-to-face interaction, which is much richer in information. The current study examines the neural organization of audio-visual (AV) sentence processing using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at 4 Tesla. Participants viewed the face and upper body of a speaker via a video screen while listening to her produce, in alternating blocks, English sentences and sentences composed of pronounceable non-words. Audio-visual sentence processing was associated with activation in the left hemisphere in Broca's area, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, the superior precentral sulcus, anterior and middle portions of the lateral sulcus, middle superior portions of the temporal sulcus, supramarginal gyrus and angular gyrus. Further, AV sentence processing elicited activation in the right anterior and middle lateral sulcus. Between-hemisphere analyses revealed a left hemisphere dominant pattern of activation. The findings support the hypothesis that the left hemisphere may be biased to process language independently of the modality through which it is perceived. These results are discussed in the context of previous neuroimaging results using American Sign Language (ASL).
