Dramatic changes or revolutions in a field of science are often made by outsiders or "trespassers," who are not limited by the established, "expert" approaches. Each essay in this diverse collection shows the fruits of intellectual trespassing and poaching among fields such as economics, Kantian ethics, Platonic philosophy, category theory, double-entry accounting, arbitrage, algebraic logic, series-parallel duality, and financial arithmetic.

      Book Description

Capital, Accumulation, and Money: An Integration of Capital, Growth, and Monetary Theory is a book about capital. A root concept of capital is developed which allows for most existing concepts of capital to be unified and related to one another in consistent fashion. Such a root concept of capital offers a framework for integrating monetary and capital theory, and for analyzing the functioning of an economy, whether that economy is in a steady state of subsistence or in a process of sustainable growth. Specifically, it is shown that a conservation principle emerges that both implies and imposes a variety of constraints on the macro behavior of an economy, constraints which make for straightforward understanding and analysis of such concepts as the real stock of money, real-balance effects, and the general price level. New and illuminating insights are also provided into aggregate supply and demand, natural and money rates of interest, the relationship between real and monetary economies, and economic growth and development.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for All wondering of the Nature of Money and Capital...........2005-08-01

This book is thought-provoking and brings together theories of Capital, Interest, Money, and a variety of other topics. Professor Taylor's quest for a macroeconomic analysis of the economic framework will lead all of you to understand many things that you may have had questions about. For those with majors in Economics and/or Finance, this book is a must, and I guarantee that, if you try, you will most certainly learn something from it. This work is in my opinion comparable to that of Schumpeter and Keynes--giving analysis to better our understanding of the macroeconomic framework. A warning though-this book must be read and re-read for a complete understanding, for it can get tiring to follow along when almost every sentence makes a new point. It is well worth the effort, however, because the knowledge you will gain will equal that of the time you spend reading it. Buy it NOW!!

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly creative and provocative thinking.......2005-03-13

I was stunned by the creative thinking that Dr Taylor displayed in his seminal work on capitalism. He may well be the most brillaint and innovative thinker of this decade in terms of economic and capital theory. My hope is that as many people as possible expose themselves to his creative intellect; no one who does will regret it.

      Book Description

Every company has surplus assets. It can be excess inventory, used plant equipment or unneeded office furniture - anything a company is not using in pursuit of its business. Surplus assets take up space and tie up capital, and they negatively impact your company's bottom line.

There are a range of traditional options available for disposing of surplus assets - resell them to another company or to a dealer, re-deploy them internally, barter them, donate them, etc. This Guide reviews the pros and cons of the various traditional options.

The Guide also reviews how the Internet is changing the way companies dispose of surplus. The driving force has been the evolution of Internet marketplaces, where thousands of businesses come together to transact business quickly and efficiently. Within these marketplaces, one method of sale that is being used with great success is the online auction. By tapping into the large pool of buyers at the marketplace, sellers can generate real competition and realize optimal market pricing on the items they sell.

The appendix of this Guide includes some valuable reference sections, including a directory of key trade and professional associations.

      2 out of 5 stars A good infomercial in a book.......2000-02-15

This book is basically an infomercial for TradeOut.com. It does have some useful information, but you are none-too-gently steered in the direction of selling your surplus assets on TradeOut's web site.

That's great if you don't want to think about it, but TradeOut has lots of competition, and some of it is just plain better, especially for technology assets.

Oh, yeah, you can get the book for free if you register on TradeOut's site.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful primer on starting a business with contact information for locating startup funds if necessary........2007-03-31

This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.

I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.

      My favorite chapters were:

      1. Initial business concerns
      2. Your business' structure
      3. Business start-up details
      5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
      7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
      8. Obtaining the financing you need

The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.

I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.

Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.

I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.

When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 51 versions of this book sold; one for each state and the District of Columbia. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!

          Book Description

All living organisms consume energy, modify resources from the environment and produce waste. That is an inescapable fact of life. But in nature all material wastes are recycled as inputs to other living organisms. The only true waste is diffuse, low-grade heat.

In order to create a truly sustainable economy we must mimic the ecosystem so that the waste of every household and business becomes resource inputs to other enterprises and the only waste produced is diffuse, low-grade heat from renewable resources like solar.

In Direct Pointing to Real Wealth author Thomas J. Elpel demonstrates that it is inevitable that we will create an ecologically sustainable economy. Tom turns conventional thinking on its head and out-lines steps you can take to increase your prosperity right now while closing the loop on waste and speeding the transition to a greener world.

Direct Pointing to Real Wealth is an enlightened look at the nature of money. Discover how the economy is like an ecosystem and how money is a token we use to represent calories of energy in the ecosystem. Toms unique approach to money takes you beyond the numbers game to a direct examination of the laws of physics, biology, and economics. These laws are the same today as in the Stone Age, when people worked only a few hours per day and had much more leisure time than we do now.

Whether you are raising a family or running a business, Toms book gives you a fresh new look at economics, ecology and how to achieve your Dreams. Break through perceived limitations to discover a world of prosperity and abundance!

2 out of 5 stars Textbook more than Field Guide.......2002-11-26

I am reviewing this book from the viewpoint of a person who is on a very limited income. I must say that I was quite excited about the possibilities this book had to offer after reading some articles related to the subject on the Hollowtop website. Those articles were very well written, and had some advice that was helpful to someone like me dealing with extremely limited funds. Reading those, and thinking that they were a taste of what was to come, I decided to buy the book.
Sadly, those articles were much better written than the book.
There are some excellent ideas presented on economic/enviormental theory, and closing the loop on waste; hence the 2 stars, but most of the information seems to be recycled from other authors/sources, and written for corporations. He even recycles several of his own paragraphs word for word throughout the book. I felt that the text wandered on the most interesting points, leaving me frustrated over the effort to see his reasoning. Some passages had the distinct feeling of listening to a Brian Tracy "success tape".
I had hoped that the author would elaborate on the building of their house, the methods his family uses to close the loop on waste, and how they got by on 5% of their income.
This is a fascinating subject. I'd like to see a more cohesive version written in the author's personal experiences, and scaled to a small as well as corporate level.

This is the third book of Tom's that I have read. There is no way to say enough to describe how this book has affected me. It comfimed, for me ways that I veiwed money and my personal views of finances. It also gave me the inspiration and insight to approach finances from a different level. I bought the book on a gut feeling (I wasn't interested in it, that I knew of) and I am really glad I did. Starting in November a class will be taught at our Nature School using this classic "Field Guide". Bravo Tom, great information, Thank you! And to those wondering to read it or not...definately, get this book and cherish it!

4 out of 5 stars A thoughtful look at money ... and the world.......2000-09-07

Thomas Elpel's book covers a broad span of topics, from do-it-yourself skills around the house and garden to international economic theory and practice, but its core message is that many people seem to plan their lives backwards. They go out to make money without first thinking about how to spend it to make themselves secure and happy, or how their work might hurt the environment and other people. Elpel proposes that we first decide what we want in life, including material wants, then work toward those things as goals, making money when we need it but not as our primary objective. Not everyone will want to move to the country and raise their own food, but every reader of this book will find food for thought and kernels of insight into the way our lives, the economy, and the world function. A lot of people who frequently get themselves into financial trouble would benefit from this book but, unfortunately, they're probably the ones least likely to read it.

Two Bills from Boston takes you from the Great Depression to the realization of the great American Dream.

Two young men, both named Bill, decided to live the American Dream. They had been born into the Great Depression and had just graduated from high school.

What were the chances that they might succeed? The two Bills made a pact: they would form a team and work together.

After working at shipbuilding jobs that paid for night classes at engineering school, they were advanced to jobs in San Francisco, and later to department heads in Portland.

Bill Bright went on to victory in his career, founding Western Power Products, a small enterprise that grew into a multimillion-dollar electrical utility equipment corporation.

Here is a true story dressed in determination and teeming with perseverance. It is also a story about partnership. Bill Wild and Bill Bright (the last names alone portray a spirit that symbolizes their experiences) agreed as teenagers to team up toward capturing an American dream. Inspired -- perhaps driven -- by the advice from another Bill (Uncle Bill, who lived in New Jersey -- hence the title is not "Three Bills from Boston"), who suggested "let it be known that you want to succeed . . . and keep at it," these two young men, from the East Coast to the West Coast, through a Depression, a war, and the aftermath, converted their commitment to a common goal (to be electrical engineers) into a realization of their mutual dream: to add to the world something a little better than the world already had. This is a story about luck, skill, hard work, ingenuity, opportunity, the value of a good education, and, ultimately, success. The story of Bill Wild and Bill Bright (a story told by Bill Bright) chronicles not a rags to riches nor a claim to fame; it chronicles hard-won and very satisfying success.

Despite promising marketing research, most new products and services fail. However, with Frank R. Bacon's and Thomas W. Butler's Planned Innovation® system, any firm, of any size, in any country in the world can achieve high rates of success in new-product innovation. Like a preflight instrument check done by a cockpit crew, Planned Innovation is a disciplined and practical step-by-step sequence of procedures for reaching the intended destination point -- successful products -- every time. In an easy-to-read fashion, the authors explain their Planned Innovation system -- their action-oriented program for continuous success in new-product innovations without major failures. Their practical program features five steps to success, including: (1) a disciplined reasoning process, (2) lasting market orientation, (3) proper selection criteria that reflect (a) both strategic and tactical business objectives and goals, (b) dynamic matching of resources to present and future opportunities, and (c) positive and negative influences of major external trends affecting present and future business opportunities, (4) scientific reasoning to determine requirements before making major expenditures, and (5) proper organizational staffing. With this market-tested five-element paradigm, the authors explain what to do and why in evaluating the potential of any new product or service, ranging from ventures in retail distribution to the manufacture of products as diverse as bicycles, motorcycles, aerospace communication and navigation equipment, small business computers, food packaging, and medical products.

Other topics covered include how to cultivate a lasting market orientation, how to choose selection criteria that reflect strategic objectives and tactical goals, and how to assess the positive and negative influences of external trends on business opportunities. The authors also explain how to creatively exhaust all the 'near-in' opportunities available, from modifying existing products for familiar existing markets and extending their product-life cycles -- with minimal cost, time and risk.

4 out of 5 stars A practical set of rules for a new project manager.......1998-05-03

This is a book that I wish I had 10 years ago when I was starting out managing major business development projects - the checklist model is sound and works to cut away risks.

It has an engineering bias but can be refocused to business development - but this requires some existing experience of project management to secure the maximum benefit.

If there is a negative, the book is a little thin - both in size and in business examples.

It is worth a place in a serious project manager type of business role.

            Book Description

This book breaks important new ground in the international debate over development by presenting the first systematic attempt to map a unified theory of global development. Drawing from the fields of economics, sociology, political science, philosophy, and ethics, the author presents a unique cross-disciplinary perspective on international development that features a number of new concepts and approaches to development studies. Building upon a synthesis of three independent developments of the 1970s, Weigel contends that it is possible to construct a universal development norm and a universal moral principle which retain their credibility in both cross-cultural and transhistorical contexts. He argues further that when these principles are linked to a well-differentiated theory of basic human needs they provide a powerful normative framework for the integration of economic and political rights which can guide policymakers well into the 21st century. Certain to spark new debate among academicians and policymakers, Weigel's work makes a number of significant contributions, including: a comprehensive synthesis between moral philosophy and development studies; the most elaborate philosophical defense of the I.L.O's 'Basic Needs Approach' to date; an analysis of the nuclear arms race which utilizes the concept of stable strategies and presents a new theory of nuclear deterrence; a macroeconomic framework for basic needs program; an analysis of global parameters for development assistance; country studies which demonstrate the feasibility of Basic Needs programs for low-income countries; the application of the theory to a wide variety of topic areas such as paternalism, population control policies, the problem of political legitimation, and economic policies. Throughout, the author focuses on the concept of basic needs, arguing that the satisfaction of basic human needs must be the touchstone of all future development policies.
