Book Description

Gordon Brown, Jonathan Sacks, Joseph Stiglitz, Hans Kung, Shirley Williams, and a dozen other leading thinkers in international business and ethics identify the pressing moral issues which global capitalism must answer. How can we develop a global economic architecture which is efficient, morally acceptable, geographically inclusive, and sustainable over time? If global capitalism -- arguably the most efficient wealth creating system currently known to man -- is to be both economically viable and socially acceptable, each of its four constituent institutions (markets, governments, supranational agencies, and civil society) must not only be technically competent, but also be buttressed and challenged by a strong moral ethos. The book includes contributions from leading academics, politicians, and moralists. Recognizing that solutions will not come from any one quarter, and that any serious discussion of a just and equitable system will touch on questions of ethics and faith, the book approaches the issues from a range of different disciplines and forums.

1 out of 5 stars The Usual Suspects.......2003-07-13

In this volume we hear first from Deepak Lal in his essay "History, Morality and Capitalism," a tone-setting essay where the historians such as Louis Dumont and Michael Oakshott are cited in a condensed narrative of the worldwide history of mankind. Here we find Lal takes for granted man's inherent nature as a creature who wishes to "truck and barter," the Smithian assertion that much twentieth century ethnographic research has called into question. Yet Las makes this assertion as confidently as those made for centuries in the West that women have no souls, and that blacks have no right to their bodies, and in the East that Untouchables are unclean.

He moves to the "moral" and "historical" part of his essay by tracing the split between the Western and the Eastern traditional beliefs to the rise of capitalism to the restrictions of the early medieval Catholic Church. The church he claims changed the rules around the traditional distribution of patrimony by creating new laws and moral injunctions with respect to the distribution of wealth to heirs, injunctions which created a widow class who, because they were enjoined to follow the new law against remarriage after the death of a husband were ripe fruit for importunate priests who drew their fortunes into the church treasury. A very lucrative practice, this resulted in fabulous wealth for the medieval church according to Lal.

Lal also explores the Western moral and economic philosophers starting with St. Augustine's vision of the shining city on a hill, then moves to the high Enllightement with Kant's universalistic moral creed which sought to demostrate that man was naturally moral and that that God (though still alive) was not necessary to moral behavior. Lal notes that once Darwin declared "God is blind," and later Nietzche proclaimed that "God is dead" the confusions wrought by ultilitarianism and consequentialism thoroughly dis-enchanted the world. Through one of Nietzche's aphorisms -- "moral sensibilites are nowadays at such cross purposes that to one man a morality is proved by its utility, while to another its utility refutes it" -- the end of idealist philosophy is demonstrated.

Toward the end of the essay he suggests that any movement that would seek to undermine the trajectory of the capitalist economic ethos through a communalist or cooperative approach is "atavistic," and with that one word attempts to dismiss any evidence of or hope for less destructive arrangments among mankind. He uses the word at least three or four times, as if in its repitition it might become the more true. Another word he likes is Ecofundamentalists, a word he takes credit for inventing, and with which he attempts to discredit groups and people around the world who do not readily accede to what business theory eumphemistically calls "externalities," but which most people more simply call "pollution."

He finally ends the essay by suggesting international business consider a Humean common sense perspective. Hume, he says, saw that families have raised children to certain standards of behavior and "golden rule" beliefs for thousands of years without recourse to the potential divisiveness caused by different beliefs of followers of the various world religions diand. He maintains that it is these home truths of human behavior which should be invoked in global economic arrangements as they best represent the most common arrangements of humanity worldwide, a strategy which would avoid the misunderstandings generated between followers of various religions.

Similar to his earlier advancement of the universal creed of "truck and barter," is the practice of the universal home truths. Even if this assertion is to be granted, it prompts one to ask why capitalism should be allowed to piggy-back on these home truths, these relations which are generally altruistic or famlial in nature. Further, one could ask whether it is appropriate for capitialism to rely on these human arrangements given the self-seeking behavior promoted by capitalism. Will it not destroy the very arrangements it is piggy-backing on, or, more pointedly, isn't there ample proof that it has already? This essay is fairly representative of the essays in this volume; a dry, and supposedly "objective" manual designed for international business class and governmental and academic technocrats who have recently been forced by protests all over the world to examine the potential snarls they might run into as the world is remade in the image of the almighty dollar.

        Book Description

The integration process of `The Common Market of the South' (MERCOSUR) has been characterized by serious economic turbulence, including the devaluation of the Brazilian currency and the severe Argentinean monetary crisis. As a response to these difficulties, the adoption of monetary union has emerged as one possible solution to the financial uncertainty which has plagued this region.

Whereas some believe MERCOSUR should become a free trade area, others are convinced that nothing less than full monetary union can bring stability to the region and ease the financial fragility of the member countries. This book discusses the future of MERCOSUR, focusing on monetary union and macroeconomic policy coordination, and addresses a number of important questions including:

        • is it possible, or even desirable, to achieve monetary integration?

        • what would the pre-conditions be for establishing such a union?

        • what would the convergence criteria be for joining the monetary union?

        • what are the expected economic consequences for the member countries?

These questions are all addressed with particular reference to the experience of EMU and the lessons which can be learned by MERCOSUR countries, in terms of the difficult transitions they may have to face.

The book brings together a host of distinguished British, Argentinean and Brazilian economists to elucidate the critical policy issues surrounding the merits of monetary union in South America. Financial economists, international monetary economists, international relations experts, academics and practitioners interested in the issues surrounding economic and monetary union will all value the perceptive insights found in this volume.

This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.

I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.

            My favorite chapters were:

            1. Initial business concerns
            2. Your business' structure
            3. Business start-up details
            5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
            7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
            8. Obtaining the financing you need

The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.

I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.

Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.

I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.

When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 51 versions of this book sold; one for each state and the District of Columbia. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!

Courses in how to give presentations cost hundreds of dollars--maybe more; yet few provide the comprehensive coverage found in this book, which is designed to show you how to eliminate your fears, gain recognition as a good speaker, and have fun doing it. It takes you through all of these phases, from the initial planning and organization to the development and actual delivery of your presentation. Chapters follow a logical sequence starting with giving a talk and ending with how to handle questions and answers. New to this edition is an entire chapter devoted to the personal computer and how to use it most effectively. Updated information, charts, slides, viewgraphs, room setups and more complete this step-by-step handbook, which you'll refer to again and again for successful speaking.

5 out of 5 stars Reference for Training New Trainers.......2006-12-29

I used this book as a reference in 1996 and provided copies to a dozen new trainers for a meeting where many of them would be training for the first time. We had another meeting in 2006 and I provided updated training resources... several of the folks still referenced this book as a good resource. It was updated in 1991 from 1984 and would benefit from another update (most of us use PowerPoint slides instead of 35 mm slides now). Even considering updated technologies - the concepts are sound and still every bit as valuable.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely Worth It.......2006-12-02

There are a couple of facts in life: Most people make horrible presentations, and they don't have a clue what makes them horrible or a total bore. This book, with its witty style and well-organized, well, presentation, is easy to read, and will help the reader overcome both.

The real strong suit of this book is that Smith, unlike many other books on the subject, shows the reader how to deal with different types of hostile or loaded questions. (Anyone who listens to Hannity, O'Reilly or Limbaugh long enough will be able to recognize what I'm referring to here.)

Considering many of us will be thrown into more situations of public speaking than we may realize, Smith's book is definitely worth the purchase, not when you are asked to present, but before. You might want to start reading a book like this right away.

The College Senior's Survival Guide to Corporate America by Fred Pollack

Here at last is the tell-it-like-it-is guide to the real world of corporate America. A cubicle dweller turned stand-up comedian, Fred Pollack points his stinging wit at every facet of corporate life, including the commuter train, the 401K plan, the IT department, and the Christmas party. Between the laughs, Pollack shows college seniors not merely how to survive but how to beat the system. The book is filled with practical, hard-nosed advice on such tactics as padding an expense report, kissing the boss's butt, and hiding that game of computer solitaire. Outspoken and irreverent, THE SURVIVAL GUIDE TO CORPORATE AMERICA will delight office veterans as much as it will enlighten the soon-to-be initiated.

              5 out of 5 stars A very funny read.......2005-09-05

We all know situations and characters the author covers in this book - everything from the often painful commute to the office know-it-all jerk!!! I was crying laughing throughout the book. Well worth the purchase!!!

              5 out of 5 stars A Gem!.......2005-05-08

I have to admit that the standards I set for this book were rather low. I bought it for a few dollars in a discounted books bin, However, Pollack provided a surprisingly keen insight, and a very funny book that I would say is worth the publisher price.

Among the funniest parts of the book deal with co-workers and management. He provides a good system of general categories of each, along with hilarious ability to describe the quirks that one can manipulate.

His advice for surviving in the office, warning signs that you're about to be fired, and shenanigans are all worthy of multiple readings. Having friends that work in cubicle farms, I have seen firsthand how true Mr. Pollack's observations are.

The best part is he wrote the entire book while at work, on someone else's dime. You have to respect that.

5 out of 5 stars funny books review.......2004-06-02

The Survival guide to corparate america is really funny.
Me and my friend were cracking up like maniacs over it.
Particulary the bosses from hell chapter was exceptional.
When I get older I will reread it and actually use the advice. That is pretty much it for the great book.

5 out of 5 stars I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST ME!.......2002-12-08

I thought it was just me!

Having worked for only two corporations throughout my career, this book made me realize that corporate life is pretty much a universal experience!

The sly and witty Pollack pokes fun at all the different types of coworkers to be dealt with, such as 'Ms. Whiner,''Betty Crocker', 'Big Ben,' and 'The Shadow.'

Although most of Pollack's observations are funny in their own right, he turns them sideways, putting an insightfully entertaining twist on every aspect of corporate life, including corporate policy, office art, department meetings, lunch, and the company fire drill--not to mention an enlightening explaination of corporate lingo such as, "touch base," "have a good one", "it's a challenge."

This book had me in tears, I was laughing so hard. The realistic tips and tricks that college seniors can learn from it will position them well for their looonnnnnnngggggggg life ahead in corporate America!

5 out of 5 stars If Only The Movie "Office Space" Had Met Fred.......2001-12-28

This book is "Office Space" x300! The shtick in this book is incredibly true. This book is not only valuable to graduating college seniors, but also to seasoned professionals who will, like I did, laugh their asses off!

5 out of 5 stars In my top 10.......2003-04-10

CGE&Y wasn't even really on the radar for me until after I read this guide. But it really opened my eyes to the possibilities and opportunities to be had at this company. On the strength of this guide, I went ahead and entered the recruiting process for CGE&Y. I was so impressed with the people I met that I accepted an internship with them. I am very much looking forward to going to work for them this summer. So far so good. Thanks to Wetfeet for steering me in the right direction.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended for Interview Preparation.......2003-03-05

This guide was a great resource for interview preparation. It provided an informative picture of where the company stands in the industry now and where it's going. I also really liked the sections that explained what employees like and don't like about the company. I feel like I have a much better idea of what I'm getting into, both the good and the bad.

With the amount of time most people put into preparing for their consulting interviews, you don't want to leave out this essential step. I give this a thumbs up.

This book, which represents a departure from the standard offerings for this course, is distinctive in three significant ways. First, it provides a greater balance between primary and secondary information and the techniques and methods that underpin these two important types of data. Second, it offers in-depth coverage of the critical information research tools and skills that will be required of today and tomorrow's marketing researchers and business decision-makers. Third, it is so replete with real-world material that it allows students to see the immediate value of marketing research.

                      3 out of 5 stars Limited.......2001-08-21

A number of international trade terms used throughout the industry are not included in this book. So the glossary is somewhat disappointing in this respect.

Hinkelman also did not provide a detailed overview of Documentary Collection payments (used less frequently than L/C, but still worth noting).

However, I would give a thumbs up to the L/C overview.

3 out of 5 stars The '89 Basic Guide to Exporting is a good start, but.............1998-09-28

The 1989 version of the Basic Guide to Exporting is a good start, but one should look for the 1998 version in order to keep up with our digital global economy. Yes, the 1989 version is old and pre-Berlin Wall, but actually very similar to the 1998 new version in structure. The 1989 version of the Basic Guide of Exporting illustrates the essentials of exporting something to few exporters really appreciate. One of the best aspects of the 1989 version is the beginning sections on developing the exporter's international marketing plan. In the early chapters, one also learns the specific techniques and programs used in international marketing and research - the primers in exporting a good or service abroad. The other benefit of this cost-effective tool is the sample forms that one can use in corresponding with international importers and business contacts. Of course, one should always seek professional advice on all aspects of exporting and the Basic Guide is your source for those helpful contacts. However, the names and contact information in the 1998 version are much more relevant because they are more updated and reference many aspects of Internet resources. Exporting has also changed in the last nine years and the 1989 version is not up to date enough to cover those changes effectively. Although the 1989 version is good, one should seek out the new version so that one is prepared for the new global e-commerce environment. The 1989 Basic Guide of Exporting could be your start, but you must build from there. The price is right, too!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent exposition of the subject material.......1998-03-26

This book is the single best summary of the subject that I have reviewed in my nearly fifteen (15) years as a commercial attorney. Ms. Alexandra Woznick, the author, is to be commended for an outstanding job of clarifying a subject that is to even experienced practioners, both mystifying and terrifying, and shows that she's the one to consult about such problems. Far from raging against the machine or leaving us down in a jungleland of complexity and regulation, Ms. Woznick shows that you, too, can understand fundamentals and basics of exporting. The edge that one will gain in the battle of evermore increasing regulation and red tape, both on the main streets and the backstreets of trade, from having this book in his or her corporate, professional or personal library more than justifies the small purchase price. The impressions one has from this work are lasting, and yet may field immediate responses to perplexing questions which come up on the run or in the air while doing deals. On business or in the midst of complex transactions, I can't get it out of my head that in the end, this little volume is a keeper. While one cannot guarantee removing all the kinks, contstraints and complications of export practice, this volume will take you past the long and winding road of complex research and easy misunderstanding to an easy short cut to straightening them out. While I had no expectations when I first picked up this volume, the impact for me will not fade away any time soon, lifting as it did the ball and chain of less clarifying works. If I had my way, this volume would be in every commercial practioner's bookshelf. All around the world, and under African skies where our President even now is encouraging export and trade, this book will help one break on through to an understanding of trade complexities in a complex and dynamic legal and regulatory trading environment. If one is drawn to the rhythym of international trade, one is well advised to keep this little volume in order to keep up with the beat of a changing world market.
