Book Description
This book serves not only as an introduction, but also as an advanced text and reference source in the field of deterministic optimal control systems governed by ordinary differential equations. It also includes an introduction to the classical calculus of variations.
An important feature of the book is the inclusion of a large number of examples, in which the theory is applied to a wide variety of economics problems. The presentation of simple models helps illuminate pertinent qualitative and analytic points, useful when confronted with a more complex reality. These models cover: economic growth in both open and closed economies, exploitation of (non-) renewable resources, pollution control, behaviour of firms, and differential games. A great emphasis on precision pervades the book, setting it apart from the bulk of literature in this area. The rigorous techniques presented should help the reader avoid errors which often recur in the application of control theory within economics.
Customer Reviews:
Still the best guide ever to Optimal Control for Economists.......2001-06-07
There are a number of standard textbooks in optimal control theory for economists. This is the textbook for the guys that wrote the other textbooks. Both the Calculus of Variations and Optimal Control Theory is presented in a rigorous manner. The authors are however not wedded to rigour as they often present "rough" arguments when they suspect that presenting the results rigourously would exceed the proficiency one could reasonably expect from their economist readers.
When the book was written it was not only a textbook but also an important piece of research. The reprint, appearing 10 years later, still presents the ideas with remarkable freshness. The discussion of transversality conditions in infinite horizon models should be read by all economists using these models and corrects some other textbooks where the topic has been bungled. The discussion of jump controls is superb.

Book Description
Stability and Time-Optimal Control of Hereditary Systems is the mathematical foundation and theory required for studying in depth the stability and optimal control of systems whose history is taken into account. In this edition, the economic application is enlarged, and explored in some depth. The application holds out the hope that full employment and high income growth will be compatible with low prices and low inflation, provided that the control matrix has full rank, i.e., the existing controls are fully effectively used. The book concludes with a new appendix containing complete programs, data, graphs and quantitative results for the US economy.

Kylix will be the first proven, widely available RAD system for Linux. Packed with programming solutions, Kylix Power Solutions with Don Taylor, Jim Mischel, and Tim Gentry focuses on solutions to specific Kylix programming challenges and objectives that arise when moving from Windows to a Linux operating environment. Written by Kylix experts and respected software developers, this book provides readers with accurate, understandable, easy to use, and dependable programming approaches and solutions. It also helps readers understand the whys of Kylix and Linux as well as the hows, using carefully documented commentary on why each approach is used. This book is ideal for experienced Delphi programmers expanding to the Linux operating system through Kylix and existing Linux developers wishing to develop GUI-based programs under Linux.
Customer Reviews:
The Title Says it all.......2004-05-05
This book stands out from the rest. It is not a book for beginners, but a solid discussion of real world solutions.
Any experienced Delphi developer needs to add this to his/her collection.
Covers topics such as Inter-process communications, semaphores, threading etc. Well written with not so bad example code.
My favorite Kylix reference.......2003-04-30
This one contains so many useful Linux tidbits and "How to get things done" sections, it is always the Kylix reference I pick up first.
Excellent overview of Linux system programming.......2002-04-07
300 pages - not encyclopedic - but a rich, thorogh introduction to Linux system programming and how to go about it using Kylix. Well worth the money.
All the missing bits - manna from Heaven.......2002-01-08
I'm a long-time Delphi programmer and relatively recent migrant to Linux. This book absolutely fills the gaps for me in the numerous places where I'm asking "Now, how the heck do I go about doing THIS on Linux?".
It's not about Kylix (although the samples and solutions are in ObjectPascal, of course) so much as about accessing the nuts and bolts of Linux through HLL calls to the OS, MMS and filesystem. Although it is primarily relevant to ObjectPascal it will be a great resource for developers using other HLLs on Linux too. It really fills in the bits that are missing from Linux books, programming books, FAQ forums and so on if your history has been with DOS and Windows and, especially, if you want to cross-plat your Delphi components.
I needed this book a year ago and I'm overjoyed to have it, now that I'm using Kylix 2.
Operating systems programming discussed thoroughly.......2001-10-31
This book mostly provides linux-specific low level operating system solutions (forking, process control, shared libraries, semaphores, pipes, signal hangling, message passing, etc). I bought it because i wanted to know how to do in Kylix things I used to do in C, and I am very satisfied with the information provided. The book is rich in code examples, logically structured, and well explained. It is written in the hands-on style, where an explanation as to how things work is followed by a specific code example. The explanations are straightforward and easy to follow, but in order to benefit from reading the book you should be familiar with operating systems programming concepts like interprocess communication, and have some knowledge of unix (target level is listed as intermediate/advanced)....
In this context, the chapter on Help does not seem to belong in this book, and the book could better benefit from being called "Linux System Programming with Kylix". Also, most of the code examples could be cut by 30-50%. For example, there's no need to list visual object declarations, since even novice can deduce these from the photograph (and they're not essential to the subject matter anyway). Since the book was published, Kylix 2 has been released, and I think the book could benefit from a 2nd edition updated with the changes Borland made in Kylix2. I don't think any essential changes would be neccessary, since operating system concepts do not change overnight. However, there are many times when authors state: "this and that is broken, and therefore you should use the code below," and such portions should be updated.
Overall, this book gets 4 stars from me:
+ 5 because it's the only position on the market with this information, and the information is adequate and presented in an organized manner;
-1 because of the criticism listed above.

the BEST on the family side of family business.......2001-08-15
This is one of two "required reading" texts for my clients and the transactional advisors who assist me in my own family busines practice. I've not found anything else as informative, insightful and helpful regarding "working with the ones you love." Great exercises that are readily accepted even by the more skeptical family members. Family businesses have told me they've found this helpful even when for fee or geographic reasons--my practice is limited to the Central Valley--I've referred them to this book in lieu of meeting with them personally.

Weddle's Guide is a must have book.......2005-05-07
The WEDDLE's Guide is an absolute "must have" for employers and those seeking new jobs. The Directory has excellent reviews of over 300 leading job sites, and especially the niche sites. A recent survey indicated that the niche sites is where over 82% of the candidates come from for employers, so knowing which niche sites are the good one's is important. The WEDDLE's Directory is THE source for any employer or candidate wanting to know where to go!
The Essential Book for Successful Recruiting.......2005-04-19
This is a key piece of recruiting strategy for corporate and agency recruiters alike. I typically don't like paper-based resources anymore and used to go to google to find sites.
I have now learned that this book can make the difference between using the web successfully to fill your positions or spending a lot of time and money on web resources with poor results. Reach for this book first for help in making good decisions and your client satisfaction rate will soar.
No more guessing about the kinds of resumes and visitors on a site. I have found sites that are perfect for my search that I would never have found otherwise.
Free updates are available on the website weddles.com in addition to several other useful resources. I highly recommend this essential resource and encourage you to visit the web site as well.
Top Tool.......2005-02-13
As a career recruiter ( 5 Corporate and 13 Search Firm) I consider this the top resource that you can have at your fingertips. It gives you the information that you need to make an informed choice on where to search post an opening.
Recently, when I ordered the new edition, I called the office with a question and found myself speaking to Mr Weddle himself. He is involved in all aspects of this book.
Don't miss out on his on-line newsletter which keeps the book up to date at all times.
No matter if you are a rookie or a seasoned professional- you need this resource to bring you to the next level of succes in the industry.

Book Description
One of the most important decisions about family life is whether mom will stay home with the children, or work full-time outside the home. Unfortunately, not all couples have the freedom to make that decision based on their desires rather than financial demands. Team Work empowers those parents who would like to choose home by providing them with inspiration, practical advice, and up-to-date on-line and off-line resources to help them achieve their goals.
Contents of Team Work include how to build your husband's confidence, determine if he is underpaid, help him to negotiate a raise, find a new, higher-paying job, or build a business of his own, and how to use the Internet to help him succeed.
Customer Reviews:
Beyond Scary.......2005-06-23
This book scares me on so many levels I do not know where to start. First, the idea that "the most important decision a couple will make is whether mom stays home" is a warped view of parenting. Yes - the top critical decision in parenting is "how will we care for our children?" But to assume that mom has to stay home to provide good care leaves a lot of great options off the table. It also leaves out important discussion items such as what we will teach our children about faith, virtue, family, work, service, etc.
As an HR professional I find it amusing that the author advises that women work on their husbands resumes and give him advice on how to succeed at work. I have interviewed men like this, worked with men like this, and had the opportunity to layoff men like this. They are not typically the strongest performers. Far better is a man who is managing his own career and can stand on his own two feet. I'm not saying that we don't all need support - certainly I support my DH in his career and he supports me, but we don't ever try to run each other's career. That's a recipe for a toxic marriage.
In terms of mothering, the messages in this book are very dangerous for our daughters. Do you really want to teach them by your example that their key to success in life is finding a "meal ticket" with enough ching that they can live a more leisurely life? Don't marry for love, or because someone is a good decent person who is committed to making the world a better place - marry because someone can give you the life of leisure you want. And who cares how stressful and boring his work is - as long as you get what you want.
Finally, the idea that DH should work longer and harder so mommy can stay home with children is just plain selfish - why should he have to miss out on precious time with his children and cause the children to miss out on time with him? Save your money and your mental energies - invest them in developing your skills and talents so that together as a family unit you can make a great contribution to society.
Mo' Money Please.......2002-04-22
Do you love your husband but feel tht he's not bringing home enough bacon? Teamwork is the book for you. Joanne Watson tells how to hunt up ways to make your man look good on his resume, how to write that resume, give him tips on his interview and beyond. The book does exactly what it promises to do. However, the reader must decide if her sweet but initially unmotivated man is worth all the effort it will take to get him a better job.
Great Information, I highly recomend this book.......2002-01-27
I highly recommend this book for any women who wants to fully support her husband and help him make more money to provide for the family. Even if you have to hold a job for now, the information in this book will help your family survive better and, if this is your goal, too eventually work toward a situation where you can be a "Stay-at-home mom". Otherwise you'll just help your husband make more money. That's great too.
Bonnie Bock
I've used some of these techniques, and they really do work!.......2001-11-14
This book is very well written, easy to read, and full of practical advice on how to increase one's income.
I have used a number of these techniques, and they really do work; my husband's income increased 5x as a result of these actions. I was a stay-at-home-mom before, but it is certainly easier with more money.
I highly recommend this book.

USE GREAT COMMUNICATIONS FOR FANTASTIC SUCCESS.......2004-09-16
This book adds a valuable case history about coupling lean manufacturing (custom-built, high quality products, rapidly built using just-in-time inventory -- see Lean Thinking) with great communications (to and from customers, employees, suppliers, technology developers, and product planners).
I have read every published article I can find about Dell Computer and every published speech by a Dell executive, and I learned a lot about what Dell did (and when), why, and what the results have been.
I came away with a much higher opinion of Dell Computer as a communciations model for other companies. They reduce errors because they listen and act quickly. This is one of the biggest weaknesses of most organizations.
Recently, I had the chance to spend a day at Dell on a site visit and came away even more impressed with how well they communicate. Everyone I met had a thorough understanding of the company's vision, strategy, and business model. I have never experienced that before in any company of any size.
You may be tempted to ignore Dell Computer now that their growth and that of personal computers is slowing since 2000. That should affect your stock investing, not your best practices learning.
To the Dell model, you can further improve by considering best practices that Dell does not do enough of yet such as scanning the business environment to locate best practices that it does not yet use.
You can also consider the ideal best practice, which is to replace your product with a service that is better and less costly to the customer. In Dell's case, this would mean turning the network into the computer without the need for a computer in the first place. Since Dell recently announced it will be doing more with servers and services, that may well be in the company's future.
Dell Computer has also been very effective at overcoming the other sources of stalled performance at most organizations: Tradition, Misconceptions, Disbelief about new thngs and ideas, Bureaucracy, Avoiding the unattractive (such as angry customers), and Procrastination.
You can use an 8 step process involving measurements, anticipating the future best practice, exceeding that future best practice using best practices in new combinations, identifying the ideal best practice and approaching it, employing the best employees and incentives to create the results you want, and repeating this process. Then you will run rings around Dell Computer, unless Dell Computer begins to use this process before you do.
Buy, read, think about, decide how to apply the lessons of the book, and act. You will be glad you did.
Michael Dell spends 40% of his time with customers. A lot of the rest goes into designing improved ways to listen to customers. Should you be doing the same?
