Optimal Regulation addresses the central issue of regulatory economics - how to regulate firms in a way that induces them to produce and price "optimally." It synthesizes the major findings of an extensive theoretical literature on what constitutes optimality in various situations and which regulatory mechanisms can be used to achieve it. It is the first text to provide a unified, modern, and nontechnical treatment of the field.
The book includes models for regulating optimal output, tariffs, and surplus subsidy schemes, and presents all of the material graphically, with clear explanations of often highly technical topics.
Kenneth E. Train is Associate Adjunct Professor in the Department of Economics and Graduate School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. He is also Principal of the firm Cambridge Systematics.
Topics include: The cost structure of natural monopoly (economies of scale and scope). Characterization of firstand second-best optimality. Surplus subsidy schemes for attaining first-best optimality. Ramsey prices and the Vogelsang-Finsinger mechanism for attaining them. Time-ofuse (TOU) prices and Riordan's mechanisms for attaining the optimal TOU prices' Multipart and self-selecting tariffs, and Sibley's method for using self-selecting tariffs to achieve optimality. The Averch-Johnson model of how rate-of-return regulation induces inefficiencies. Analysis of regulation based on the firm's return on Output, costs, or sales. Price-cap regulation. Regulatory treatment of uncertainty and its impact on the firm's behavior. Methods of attaining optimality without direct regulation (contestability, auctioning the monopoly franchise.)

Good starter for the field.......2001-02-03
This is one of the very few textbooks on Natural Monopoly Regulation. The level of presentation is undergraduate, which also means virtually no mathematics. It covers the basics quite well and may be considered as a good starter for the field. The book is full of illustrations that facilitate learning. Contrary to volumes written with the old descrirptive approach, this book teaches the student to think in terms of economic modelling.

I really liked this book. It ended up taking the place of the main text because it outlined everything so well & provided a lot of good information. It contained all the notes I would have taken from the book, except with this book I didn't have to. It is also really easy to justify buying this book, which is useful, to the point, a quarter of the size of the text and a third the price.

This resume reference is targetting audience with years of working experience. What I like about this book from the others are -
1. Plenty of examples, with genuine comments on the strength and uniqueness of each resume.
2. Categorize the resume section based on job titles and career (executive level).
3. This is a thick reference book and yet it din spend half the time teaching/educating what you can get from just any other resume book, the so-called writing tips. It goes straigth to the point on examples.
Well, consideirng the motives of why most of us get a resume book - i.e. to cross-reference, this is a book that's worth the money.

If you are a professional resume writer, this book is a must for your reference materials. Not only does this book have many examples of executive resumes, it has excellent design and layout tips. I found an original 1922 copy of this book in a used bookstore and wow...I really hit the jackpot with this one. "Ad man" Davison is one of the original guys back when direct mail, letter writing, and all the rest was planting the seeds for what it later became. This book is full of awesomely valuable tips and suggestions for sales letter writing that are just as effective today as they were so many years ago, if not more so, since hardly anybody uses this kind of thing nowadays. So if you are a fan of Robert Collier's Letter Book, Dan Kennedy, Gary Halbert, Joe Sugarman, and all the other guys, this book is a MUST have...IF you can find it.

I'm buying copies of this book as the perfect gift for college-bound H.S. students, recent H.S. grads, and students already in college. Freebies are listed, as well as places where you can get sizable discounts on just about anything. I always knew that discounts were available with a student I.D. card, but had no idea how many places accepted it. This book tells you about all of them. The format is easy to follow, and the author's tone is friendly and conversational. She really knows her stuff!

I gave this to my daughter before she left to start sophomore year at college; I earmarked pages where she can book her plane tickets back home for Thanksgiving at a student rate, where she can get cheap textbooks and so on. This is a great guide for her, but even better for ME since I am paying her tuition costs which are getting higher, and am always looking for ways to trim the fat.
