    Book Description

Applied econometric research is concerned with the measurement of the parameters of economic relationships and with the prediction (by means of these parameters) of the values of economic variables
Dependent variable is the value of a function that is determined by the function and the value(s) chosen for its independent variable(s). The generalized method of moments (GMM) estimation has emerged over the last decade as providing a ready to use, flexible tool of application to a large number of econometric and economic models by relying on mild, plausible assumptions. Panel, or longitudinal, data, are data on constant experimental units over a period of time. Nonparametric methods are any of various inferential procedures whose conclusions do not rely on assumptions about the distribution of the population of interest.
This book uses a GMM approach to make its presentation of panel data methods for weak model assumptions ("semiparametric"). These assumptions are useful because they can offer general approaches and explain real problems. So while the subjects covered by this book are narrower than those appearing in a comprehensive book on panel data, the utility of the material (that is, the book's ability to make accessible practical computation and implementation methods) is higher.
An economic system typically consists of many interdependent variables and the relationships among them. In estimating the equations of such systems, econometricians frequently encounter an obstacle known as "the identification problem." The latter is most easily illustrated by reference to the process of determination of price and output in a market. To model this process the econometrician must develop a quantitative estimate of both the demand and supply functions. Typically the data used to estimate these functions are past observations of price and output determined by the points of intersection between the demand and supply curves. If, in the past, the supply curve has been shifting (due, say, to production cost changes) while the demand curve has remained fixed, the resultant intersection points trace out the demand function. If the demand curve has shifted (due, say, to income changes) while the supply curve has remained fixed, the intersection points trace out the supply curve. The most likely outcome is movement of both curves yielding a pattern of price, quantity intersection points from which the econometrician will be unable, without further information, to distinguish the demand curve from the supply curve or estimate the parameters of either. This is the identification problem.

3 out of 5 stars Review of Chapter 10: OAS Implementation Issues.......2001-01-18

Chapter 10 of this book contains the best exposition I have found to date regarding contruction of an OAS model for MBS. On the downside, in the process of replicating the model I have not been able to reproduce the interest rate cap prices on page 171 nor the the output of the prepayment model aging function depicted graphically on page 184, figure 6.

On the cap price issue, all inputs to the cap pricing were reproduced exactly, so that the failure to reproduce the prices themselves is a mystery.

Regarding the prepayment aging function it does not appear that the function presented in equation (22) on page 183, using the GNSF model coefficients, produced the output contained in figure 6, on page 184.

I point out these two issues in order to indicate the extent to which replicating the results of this chapter are possible. Finally, I was dissapointed in the willingness of the author to respond to clarifying questions regarding the presented material. I was surprised when I did not receive a response because the author was eager to answer a prior inquiry from me asking about the appicability of his chapter to my MBS modeling interests.

In any event, the chapter provides the best documentation of OAS model construction I have found. For those practitioners wanting to learn how to construct a workable OAS model for MBS fixed rate pass throughs I highly recommend chapter 10 of this book.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good Ideas Without Money Behind Them Are Worthless!!.......2001-02-20

The authors did a fine job writing about the need for every one to educate themselves on the means to acquire wealth. Good ideas without money behind them end up worthless. This book is a very good idea and Jesse Jackson and Juliette Fairley deserve all the kudos anyone can muster.

The book explains in detail and by example how you first must understand the means to wealth and then practice discipline to acquire it! It is not matter of luck but culture and lack of knowing the opportunities that exist. When Wharton graduates become parents, financial matters are discussed at the dinner table. Contacts are maintain through friendship and networking. Opportunities are created from such encounters and knowledge of how the system of investment works.

Yet, we from the middle class use to discuss the football players not how the owners invested into the teams. The underclass of all colors are more disadvantaged. Thus, the authors can show you how to think of sports as a monopoly to be acquired instead of illusion of fan ownership with misplaced devoted loyalty. The difference is cleverly hidden. The fan wastes his time watching sports and spending his money to attend the games. As the investors who own the sports are making the money as they watch to boot. One must stop watching and start learning to invest is the moral of the story.

The authors point out nothing is not out or reach, if you acquire the education to invest on what you love to do and this book is the place to start. Jesse Jackson often gets criticized for putting his nose in places he feels are causes for change. Whatever your opinion of him, you can't deny he has not helped many people in many ways and this book is just an example of one of them.

Jesse is human like any of us and can fall from grace anytime and has had the courage to admit it. At the same time, he won't stay down for long and he desires what all leaders desire, a healthy economy for the benefit of all. Jesse Jackson is not the problem but part of the solution as evident by this book with Juliette Fairley.

I came away from reading the book with knowing the color of green with portraits of dead presidents knows no discrimination. Money is sought after with over glorified admiration by the many towards the few. Yet, if one is interested in money instead of being just motivated to acquire it, you will come to understand the difference between the two. Being interested in money as a tool for change is an entirely different matter than being motivated by money in thinking it is the answer to all dreams, fame and power. The book shows how to use it as a tool, for the benefit of you and others.

I highly recommend this book be purchased for anyone you feel is struggling to make ends meet in today's world of economic freedom or servitude depending upon your position and attitude. A book like this can change the lives of many.

5 out of 5 stars Barrier Breaking Keys To Financial Success Are Now Available.......1998-08-26

Fairley has created a sensible and powerful guide to getting ahead that will long stand as a guide to not only reaching, but also explaining the path to financial success. The insider information provided is not only powerful, but also profitable and a true must read for all African American Entreprenuers. The shared insight from America's most accomplished investors bring all who read this book into one of the most private fraternities.

4 out of 5 stars A very good introduction to investing and finance.......1998-08-25

Many personal finance and investing books fail to be effective by trying to speak to too broad an audience. Fairley accomplishes her mission of providing a straight talk introduction to an audience of African Americans (or anyone else for that matter) that has the means but not the fundamentals to manage their finances. Fairley steps out of the way and allows seasoned professionals give advice in their own words about the areas of finance that they know best in a way that is not overbearingo or intimidating. A must have for those just getting out of the blocks.

          4 out of 5 stars good reference.......1998-08-24

This is a much needed inspiration and reference for anyone who wants there money to work for them.

4 out of 5 stars Solid base for any African American learning finance........1998-08-09

This book is a solid base for any person of color looking to have a basic understanding of finance and the stock market (basic investing). In her attempt to spread light on investing in the market, Fairley manages to inspire dreams to entreprenuership to those wanting more than investing in the market. From Frank Savage to Ariel Capital Management, this piece stands tall as an instrument for basic understanding in investing for the long term and simultaneously manages to inspire wanting to own your own business. I highly recommend this piece to those who have no background in finance and wish to expand their current viewpoints on making money.

            Book Description

The Mutual Gains Enterprise argues that to achieve the crucial twin goals of world-class quality and productivity and good, secure jobs for American workers, the United States must fundamentally transform its current human resource practices. This is an urgent issue because, despite signs of progress, the overall pace of workplace reform remains disturbingly slow and erratic, far behind the optimistic predictions of the 1980s. Kochan and Osterman identify a series of barriers, within firms and the larger economy, that have blocked the diffusion of workplace innovation. These barriers include: the low position of human resource considerations within the internal power structure of firms; a weak theoretical and practical understanding of organizational change; a governance system that discourages long-term investment in human resources; weak and declining unions; and an inadequate skill base and training system for the work force. The authors then propose a mutual gains policy framework that would go beyond New Deal labor politics that regulate conflicts to offer policies that support and encourage benefits for workers, firms, and the national economy.

                  Book Description

“The 54 collected works in this volume provide an opportunity for the reader to determine whether Sidney’s work, individually and/or collectively, qualify as a masterpiece. For me, Sidney has created more individual pieces of his work that merit this status than any other marketing scholar I know. Collectively, the work in this volume is a masterpiece of insight into the social enterprise that is marketing. Again, I don’t know anyone whose career-long program of thought is so extraordinarily rich in imagination and practical value. He challenges, provokes, excites, soothes, and supports us with one or another of his writings.” —from the foreword by Gerald Zaltman, Harvard Business School For the first time, the writings of marketing legend Sidney J. are available in this comprehensive collection of significant scholarly essays and studies in the field of marketing. And what a compendium this is! Dennis Rook, a former student of Sidney J. Levy, has compiled the work of this prolific, internationally-recognized and award-winning writer whose ideas began to influence marketing executives in the late 1940s. His ideas continue to impact how we think about marketing’s role in management, how managers develop products and brands, how they understand their consumers, and how corporate and academic researchers investigate marketplace concerns. Brands, Consumers, Symbols, and Research is an exciting and definitive volume that should have a place on the bookshelves of every marketing professional, educator, and student around the globe!

                    Book Description

This study was motivated by an awareness of the ever-growing importance of technology on productivity and power in the information age. It examines the relationship among national security, economic competition, and technology. An underlying premise is that in an era of diminished military confrontation, economic and technological power are acquiring enhanced importance in national security considerations. Green believes that this is bound to promote closer coordination between government and private industry, but not without tensions. Using both a public policy and an economic focus, his work seeks to clarify the debate on high technology industrial policy and to address the policy question of whether and how government should respond to competitive assaults in strategic industries.

Extremely thin PAMPLET, NOT the detailed book you would expect. Interesting reading, but you can find everything it has to say on the net with a simple search. Don't waste your money.

                    4 out of 5 stars Good Reference.......2002-10-17

This is a good reference book if you go to South Korea for business or do business with Koreans in your own country. If you would like a book with more information and references, than I would recommend the book Korean Etiquette & Ethics in Business by Boye Lafayette De Mente. This book goes indepth with the Korean national character, its tradition and the personal coonnections that are essential to Koreans.
