I find Satyajit Das's books to be quite comprehensive. Indeed, the material is encyclopedic in its coverage of swaps, derivatives and other structured products.
Mr. Das provides original source material on swap structures and paces the reader through difficult material with ease. Anybody who is willing to spend the time will find the material well written from structurer, marketer and client perspectives. This makes it very useful for trading desks of investment banks and hedge funds. The level of detail may appear daunting at first but is necessary to acquire knowledge in this specialized field.
I have bought most of his books including the current boxed set of 4 books that covers newer areas of credit and interest rate derivatives, and structured products. I am therefore at a loss to see where one of the reviewers has given him a poor rating which I feel is wholly undeserved!
I'd encourage Mr. Das to continue his prolific output as it serves a real need in the investment community.

This is a very comprehensive book on this subject. Covers all the aspects of Swaps and related issues. Although, some isues like BIS guidelines are changed since the last publication of this book, it gives good idea of the regulatory and taxation issues of swaps & other related derivatives. This book can be used as a reference in this field. (not for first time reader of this topic)

This book is probably useful as a reference for practitioners. (Or was useful -- as another reviewer points out, much material is dated.) As a text or learning tool it is not particularly good. While I understand that my disppointment was probably from a misunderstanding of the books target, in the sections that I have read, the author sometimes suffers from failing to see the forest for the trees.

Good source of basic information, but not much on hedging which is key. Also, information is somewhat outdated. Good to have for a reference book on daycounts, basic structures, etc.

I work in the securities industry, and this book accurately described the markets and products without the detailed mathematics. I would recommend this book as a first reading before the Hull and White book which is much more mathematical.
Too bad it's out of print. I'd like everyone in my group to have a copy.

I consider the book a perfect guide written by a professional for professionals. If you are looking for scientific completeness and complication, go somewhere else. If you are looking for a competent down-to-earth reference, this is your book. I wonder when the third edition of this valuable tool will be published.

Frances Schmidt's metaphoric style of writing and practical examples make this book easy to read. The workbook format allows a concrete means of dealing with the job search process and helps individuals to realize their goals and develop self-awareness that translates into the ability to write effective coverletters, resumes, and answers to tough interview questions. Frances Schmidt approaches the job search from an emotional and psychological approach, rather than a purely technical one, which makes this a valuable tool for anyone facing the daunting job search task. As a new graduate, this book has been an extremely useful tool for me.
Great Resource for those weary of job search hassles.......2001-05-03
As a career counselor, I usually tell students that the best thing I can do for them is to offer the resources to help them find the answers within themselves. Author Frances Schmidt has provided just such a resource in "Getting Hired in Any Job Market." This self-help volume is composed of user-friendly advice and exercises to prepare the reader for the job market. Ms. Schmidt displays her extensive career counseling experience in a very practical, hands-on approach. The foreword sums it up well, "the premise of this book is simple. You can be employed for a lifetime if you believe in yourself, approach the job hunt from the employer's point of view, and use each job as a pathway to the next opportunity."
While the book purports to help any job seeker, I believe it would be most helpful to the battle-weary. Think of that unemployed person asking for answers to `why am I not getting any interviews?' "Getting Hired" takes the reader back to step one on a guided tour through a series of generalized self-inventory questions. Writing out the answers to the long series of questionnaires would take a fairly high commitment of time and concentration. I suspect that the typical job hunter may not be ready to commit the time unless initial efforts prove unsuccessful.
The person who actually does follow the guided exercises stands to learn a lot about self-awareness and job readiness. The chapters on resumes and master cover letters were particularly strong. If you have a friend, student, or client frustrated in their job search process, you could do him or her a favor by providing a copy of "Getting Hired in Any Job Market."
Great for new graduates!.......2001-03-16
I am very thankful for the timing of this publication by author, Frances Schmidt. As graduation approaches, I am finding myself in the middle of the transition process from college to career. I am experiencing many of the side effects that are mentioned in the book as part of the job search process. This book has helped me put into perspective my fears and to realize that my current state of confusion is transitory. The workbook format of this text enables the reader to self-reflect and discover what is preventing movement to phase III of the transition proces, which begins when one decides to take responsibility for getting an ideal job.
All new graduates struggle with these questions: "Am I good enough for that job?" "Do I have the necessary experience to compete and survive?" The issue of confidence is at the core of these questions. I have struggled with self-confidence all my life. This book helped me realize that several negative feelings stem from my lack of self-confidence. My lack of self-confidence is an example of what Frances Schmidt refers to as "self-imposed stone walls."
Every word is meaningful in Frances Schmidt's book. She gets right to the point about several aspects of the job market. She discusses the "Nitty Gritty" of how to job hunt, interview, and write resumes and cover letters. After reading her book, I learned that asking several people about what makes a great resume and cover letter may lead to frustration since "everyone is an expert." The time spent talking to others could be used to create a resume/cover letter masterpiece!
I sincerely recommend this book to any new graduate or person seeking "employment for life." It is a great investment. A lot of books that contain information about resumes and cover letters need to be disposed of in a few years. However, the information presented in Francs Schmidt's "Getting Hired in Any Job Market" is something that can be used for years to come.

This book is full of great tips and ideas that helped me understand just what my credit report was saying. There were a few items on there that scared me because they weren't my debts. I followed the instructions in D.J.'s book and got it cleared up at all three credit bureaus within a few weeks. Just in time for us to get our home loan finally approved so we could buy our first home.
It's easy to read and to understand. None of that jargon and special code words that our loan officer used when we applied for our home loan. Definitely a good buy if you're having credit problems or need help with money management.

Full of hope and evidence of the ability of humans to survive, thrive and love - no matter what. I was sorry the book was over. I am every time I read it.
Good things have roots in fallow ground...........2001-01-13
The stories are like layers of an onion where each depends on the one before it to exist. The horrors of war are only hinted at by the author's uncle but the reader easily draws parallels between the transitions in life with a fallow field, a fir tree covered with decorations and the emergence of new life and promise from a piece of fallow ground. The book is easily read in an hour and I blinked away tears as I finished. Since the first reading, my front lawn has been returning to Nature, just as the author's did, and every season of watching new life emerge reminds me of the story and that good things are always beginning.

The Little Utility That Roared.......2000-09-15
Readers familiar with the history of United Telecom and its growth from a sleepy affiliation of rural telephone properties into a global telecommunications company will enjoy John Hoffman/s perspectives. Hoffman supported the growth and consolidation of the company, from his assignments doing regulatory work with local legislatures, to lobbying at the federal level. Hoffman has unique perspectives on the formation of Sprint, and shares inside knowledge of some of the events and personalities involved in the explosive history of the company since 1985. Hoffman's perspectives may seem to some to be colored by his personal involvement, but he tells it like he sees it regarding controversial personalities and actions. Hoffman's book went to press right before Sprint's failed marriage into the WorldCom family, it would be interesting to see how he would have reacted to that reckless initiative and the subsequent financial ruin of the company.
