      Book Description

Nassau William Senior (1790-1864) - economist, critical essayist and government adviser - was a highly original classical economist in the era between Ricardo's Principles of 1817 and Mill's Principles of 1848. He was the first Professor of Political Economy at Oxford, and in his published works he made original contributions to the theory of value, rent, population, money, and international trade. Senior was an active proponent of laissez-faire. Although Senior did not achieve the originality and influence of the leading economists of the classical school - Smith, Ricardo, and Malthus - he did make an enduring contribution on the development of economics. John Stuart Mill took much effort to respond to Senior.

1 out of 5 stars Monkeys can do this.......2007-02-19

This book gives you a bunch of excel formulas without explaining why you are using them or why the process works. A great book if you want to learn how to fake it. This book will not teach you anything about the fundamentals of investments, it is just an instruction booklet on building templates. Because it doesn't explain how these work, they will be impossible to modify for other uses.

This book makes the IU Kelley School of Business look like vocational school.

There has to be something better out there.

4 out of 5 stars CD has poor ROI.......2007-02-17

The CD adds no value to this book. It merely reproduces the text found in the book without adding any additional content of value to the student.

5 out of 5 stars Buy It, You Won't Regret It!.......2003-08-06

I bought this book a few years ago, right before I moved to a new city. I have to say it is one of the BEST books, if not THE best book available for writing that all-important resume. Contrary to the individual who said it needed updated due to resumes being entered and searched via a database, I think the book is just fine as it is. This book does NOT tell you how to write a traditional resume, which is probably why the reviewer didn't think it worked and needed updated for database search...it isn't formatted like the online resume searches. However, it does instruct the reader on how to write something even better: a Qualifications Brief. A resume and a qualifications brief are similar and are meant to do the same things, but whereas a resume describes a persons past positions and his or her responsibilities, a QB describes the actual QUALIFICATIONS the person has that makes him or her the right candidate for the specific job for which he or she is applying. That makes all the difference to the employer, who gathers his or her important first impression of the applicant from the submitted dull resume or uniquely different QB. I know from personal experience: I sent out two QBs after I moved and I got call-backs for BOTH submissions. I'm currently in my 5th year of employment for one of them. I also wrote a QB up for a friend of mine and she too got hired within days of sending it out. Neither of us have ever had such prompt responses when sending out a normal, traditional resume. My advice: buy this book; it's definitely worth every penny!

5 out of 5 stars Good material for building a job search campaign.......2000-08-02

This is an excellent book. Together with other books, this is what is needed in a job search. The author has done a great job in pulling together the elements which spell success in the quest for employment. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Do you have the guts to change?.......2000-06-01

When I was out of work, and wanting to make a career change, I went to the library and, literally, checked out a three foot stack of resume and cover letter books.

I sat them next to my couch, got a glass of iced tea and went to work perusing the pages. Right away it was evident that, for the most part, the only thing different about these how to tomes was their cover. Inside was the same tired advice and the same over used examples of resumes and cover letters.

Guess what? As an employee candidate your job is to stand out from the crowd, not blend in with it.

I had just about given up on my reading (and was getting more depressed by the minute) when I came across "Who's Hiring Who?" I could tell right away that it was different, the question was, would I have the guts to run free, as the book encouraged, or would I continue to run with the herd?

When I read "Who's Hiring Who" I was three months into a job search. After this much time spent looking for work (and I was at it 12 hours a day!) I told myself that my resume, which took form based upon a lot of the ancient advice in the mainstream resume books, wasn't working and I wasn't going to lose anything by trying the advice in "Who's Hiring Who?"

It took me a week to read the book, really think about the suggestions it made, and then distill it's principles into my new QUALIFICAITONS BRIEF. No more resumes! Other no mores? No more worrying about a spotty work history. No more worrying about an incomplete (that means little or no college) education. The book tells you the best ways to accentuate the positive and marginalize the negative.

Within two weeks I had several job offers on the table. Within a month I had done more than get a job, I had successfully changed careers and was working for a hot software company with benefits out the wazoo and a pay rate higher than I'd hoped for!

(Since then I've read Tom Peter's book, "Circle of Innovation" (I think that was the book), which, when talking about resumes says who cares about education, companies want to know what you've done. What have your successes been? This is one thing "Who's Hiring Who?" focuses on.)

My advice to you? Buy the book, follow its advice and have the guts to change!

4 out of 5 stars Not sure if this book is still useful in 2000........2000-04-12

I used to think that this was the best resume book on the market. It helps you to understand that a resume should be something carefully crafted and designed with a goal in mind. I'm just not sure how useful it is in 2000. Today your resume is entered into a database and a search is done on key words to find you. This book needs to be updated. The last update was in 1989. A lot has changed in the hiring industry since then. Why has this book not been updated?

5 out of 5 stars The job search book that worked for me........1999-08-09

For a book to claim that its advice will land you a job invites skepticism--yet it worked for me. Back in 1984, after months of cobbling together four or five part-time jobs to pay the rent, I bought Richard Lathrop's Who's Hiring Who, did what it said, and landed my present job as social science abstractor within two months.

Now it is out--in a new edition--from Ten Speed Press. If the recently published update is as good as its original (which was 1983), you can do worse than buy the book and, as the blurb suggests, do what it says--you just might land your dream job.

And Amazon.com--shame on you for not having this edition in stock!

                    Book Description

Commenting on the quality of the contributors when opening the conference on which these books are based, the Governor of the Bank of England, Sir Edward George, said `I cannot remember ever before having had such a galaxy of academic economist and central banking superstars gathered together under one roof!''

Monetary History, Exchange Rates and Financial Markets is an impressive collection of original papers in honor of Charles Goodhart's outstanding contribution to monetary economics and policy. Its contributors - eminent international academics, central bankers and financial market regulators - provide an insight into an extensive set of issues including:

                    • the role of the history of economic thought in modern macroeconomics
                    • Charles Goodhart's contribution to British monetary history
                    • lessons from the history of financial crises
                    • customer trades and extreme events in foreign exchange markets
                    • trading activity, volatility and liquidity in foreign exchange markets
                    • competition, stability and financial regulation.

Charles Goodhart has written extensively on many of these topics and has become synonymous with his field; the chapters within this book offer a summary of current thinking on his own research subjects and include perspectives on controversies surrounding them.

Integrating clarity of economic thinking with the practicalities of policy, this arresting book will be invaluable to economists, central bankers and students of monetary economics.

                      Book Description

This book describes how one company broke into the global commercial market and became an industry leader. Beginning with a single product, the Omega Navigation System, and building on each subsequent success, Canadian Marconi Company was able to successfully launch other products against incredible odds in a very competitive, high-technology marketplace. Spanning a 20-year period, the book details Canadian Marconi's transition from being primarily a military supplier to becoming a larger, commercial force.

Part One of the book describes the initial business venture, the obstacles Canadian Marconi faced, their few early successes, and their numerous initial setbacks. Part Two begins with Canadian Marconi's first major success: a large and prestigious contract with Pan American World Airways. Using this as a springboard, Canadian Marconi capitalized on its newfound commercial success to become a global leader through increased exposure and new product development. This important story not only details a singular business venture, but also discusses proven methods for corporate and individual success.

5 out of 5 stars Great book packed with value.......2003-09-28

I have been active in eBusiness ranging from large multi-nationals to smaller start-ups and I found this book to hold some great insights and practical advice for navigating both the business and technical issues related to development of a successful online business. Warren Raischs'vision of the value of developing trust networks as well as using the online venues for capturing marketplace knowledge were very useful. It was a good purchase for me.

1 out of 5 stars Nice titles, low value.......2002-04-30

At a first look, this book appears to address all you would like to learn about B2B.
However the actual content behind such interesting titles does not match the expectantions it raised to me: sometime it is very poor, sometime it is very generic or specifically related to a single software provider viewpoint (C1).

It has been a wrong buy for me.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Add" To Your Collection.......2001-09-05

Over the years, the Peppers and Rogers duo have made an outstanding contribution to the field of marketing and the process of developing relationships with customers. "One to One B2B" is another installment. This well-written book builds on their earlier works and does a great deal to define in a tangible fashion the new "customer relationship mentality" that is so essential for all organziations to consider in today's real economy. The book is thought provoking and stimulating. It is evident the authors who have pioneered the bulk of the original thinking and philosophy underlying customer relationship management want to share their compelling philosophy. They are very convincing in citing the numerous advantages that accrue to those who embrace their approach to winning and retaining customers. And, this book seems to be committed to showing a straightforward, direct blueprint for implementation.

The first chapters constitute a worthwhile review of well established, familiar concepts, but they also offer some different slants that are extremely valuable supplements. The authors, in the spirit of the "learning relationshp", revise and modify to incorporate the most recent developments in the field. The updates and refinements are definitely added value.

The middle five chapters are central to the book's mission. Here the reader experiences very detailed coverage of companies and organizations that have adopted the "one to one" way of doing business. This section of the book provides this detailed description in case study format illustrating the steps of implementation and explaining the benefits associated with each implementation phase. New concepts such as a "customer touch map" are very worthwhile additions to the CRM arsenal. The chapters cover a broad range of case studies including such divers applications as Dell Computer and LifeWay Christian Resources. All of this makes for a very rewarding reading experience.

And, in keeping with their well established literary charcter, Peppers and Rogers have an eye to the future that they share with the reader. For example, they don't shy away from offering advice to Dell on future direction in light of the challenges posed by the current environment. And, they take time to weigh the eventual impact of a B2B world that is rapidly extending its scope, offering assessments from their very informed perspectives.

As an academician who has spent considerable time studying the CRM movement and consulting with companies that embrace the same, this book definitely offers value and is must for anyone that is committed to the idea of cultivating and preserving customer relationships.

4 out of 5 stars Great B2B reference for 2001.......2001-04-18

This book is packed with information about the current state of B2B marketplaces. Raisch presents an evolutionary model of B2B markets. There are a large amount of errors and repetitive information. One could complain or be grateful that the book is interesting enough to overlook its shortcomings. The structure of the book and content are definitely worth these errors. This book is a good overview of B2B marketplaces from today's view. One could call it the B2B eCommerce "Bible" since it is presented more as a reference than an analysis. There is not a good indication of where some companies he references will be in the near future.

4 out of 5 stars Good, current overview.......2001-03-21

This book provides considerable information about the current state of B2B marketplaces. The book is not particularly well-edited and the same information is repeated in several places. The book could easily have been published at one-half its length and provided the same information.

Raisch presents a four-level model of the evolution of B2B markets, Order Management, Business Community Integrators, e-Marketplaces, and Value Trust Networks. Although he talks about the last two quite a bit (especially Value Trust Networks), he never really defines them or gives good examples. He talks about what they might accomplish, but never gives the reader an idea of what they look like or what they will look like.

Aside from these negatives, the book does provide an excellent overview of the current state of B2B and a good analysis of where it might be headed.

                      Book Description

The decisive event of the late twentieth century has been the collapse of communism and the perceived triumph of capitalism. Written by authors from the First, former Second, and Third Worlds, this book reveals the characteristics and flaws of the late capitalist order. The authors explore the societal polarisation produced by globalization, the crisis of Western ideology, and the soft financial underbelly of globalization that could well bring us to an economic collapse. The perspective of this provocative book goes beyond those of the traditional left and the relativist, anti-historical school of postmodernism to offer an entirely fresh view of the world order.

                      3 out of 5 stars A Third Alternative.......2005-11-29

Though dated (1997) by fast moving events, this slim collaborative volume retains key themes of interest. The authors (Burbach, Nunez, and Kagarlitsky) grope for a Third Way apart from the twin failures of neo-liberalism and Marxism-Leninism, which have only produced polarized wealth in the former case and suffocating statism in the latter. This requires locating an alternative vision to the currently triumphant neo-liberalism, a highly urgent project considering the depradations of an unrestrained American empire. How well their postmodern socialism provides that vision is up to the reader to decide. Frankly, the details left me somewhat confused, particularly the crucial role the state would play in assisting emerging modes -- the text appears to assert contrasting roles at different points. But then, given the current confusion on the Left, this is perhaps not surprising.

The most clear-headed chapter is Kagarlitsky's on the demise of the eastern bloc. There are indeed many lessons to be learned from that experience, some of which have become cliches of a reformed Left. But I would echo Kagarlitsky's plaintive query, "Why are we afraid to discuss the real merits and advantages of the old communist system?" (p.136). It's as though reformers are afraid of being tarred if they take anything but a a wholly negative view of that 70 year experience. However, in the process of forgetting, much of positive and useful value is being lost on those who insist the Left must start over from scratch, as it were. Putting the point another way: why should an intelligent person sign on to a socialist project of any stripe if the previous experience had been so uniformly negative. A balanced reckoning with the old Soviet system remains not only an urgent historical task but a genuine prerequisite for a revitalized alternative.

Anyway, it's interesting to see how some of the book's projections have played out in the meantime. The unforeseen emergence of Hugo Chavez's Bolivarian socialism again demonstrates the importance of state authority to grass-roots empowerment and presents a new force to be reckoned with. On the topic of state power, I believe the book would have benefitted from a discussion between Kagarlitsky, on one hand, and Nunez and Burbach, on the other. Their differences point to important political consequences, and would have clarified some of the ambiguities of the text. Despite the shortcomings, however, much worthwhile discussion remains.

Hey folks, this title is available for just 20 bucks at BarnesandNoble, in paperback. And, as reported by NPR, a huge online consortium of independent booksellers will soon be open to the public, selling books via the web!

Also, if you are into the subject of this book, check out _Rethinking Marxism_, especially Roger Burbach's article in Volume 10, Number 1, 1998. Burbach refers to this book and other like-minded books, journals, and intellectuals. And certainly check out Antonio (Toni) Negri, including the _Politics of Subversion_ and _Communists Like Us: New Lines of Alliance_. The latter title was co-authored with Felix Guattari while Negri was imprisoned; and sadly, Negri has been imprisoned again. For a transcript of the truly Orwellian proceedings which led to his imprisonment, see _Revolution Retrieved_.

2 out of 5 stars Not a How-To Guide. Just a set of concise essays.......2004-09-18

This book is written as a simple introduction which can be best described as set of essays. Here is what I think can improve in this book:

                      1. Real life exporting/importing example and scenarios with actual sample forms.

                      2. More information on importing could be useful (Just one chapter on importing!!)

Over all if you hold a management position where you have people doing all paper work for you and you just want a quick overview - it could be a useful book. If you are an entrepreneur looking to do most of the things yourself don't bother buying this book. (Its exactly opposit to what the title of this book says)

5 out of 5 stars A Very Comprehensive Book about Import / Export.......2001-08-05

This one of the most comprehensive books about import / export, but it comes only in a pocket book size. It covers from A-to-Z of the import / export procedures, including other related issues like Financing, Distribution and U.S. Customs requirments. It also details role & responsibilities of each party involved. This book focuses primarily on the U.S., but it is also good for importer / exporter in other countries. Highly recommended. It is not only excellent for students or new comers in the import / export areana, but it is also a good desk reference guide.

5 out of 5 stars A good, easy to read introduction. Many helpful hints.......1998-04-23

This book serves a good, solid introduction to exporting and importing. Any small business or manager planning to "go global" will find useful guidelines, hints, addresses and also proven strategies in this book. It is an easy to read, easy to implement guidbook that will help you use the author's expertise & experience to avoid common mistakes. I highly recommend it for anyone planning to export/import. It is significantly better than other general introduction books and complements more specialized exporting books rather nicely.
