The valuation of assets, both tangible and intangible, is an important element of corporate finance. Putting a price tag on ideas is almost impossible, and in the new economy, where companies grow dependent on intangible assets all the time, market volatility can be attributed in large part to our collective ignorance of their value. There are two basic approaches to valuation: from financial statements to cash flows, and from cash flows to financial statements. The former projects historical financial statements into the future and the latter attempts to construct cash flow statements and use them in forecasting future financial statements. Established companies use the first method and start-ups the second. In Principles of Cash Flow Valuation, the authors strive to "close the gap" between these two approaches by presenting the principles of cash flow valuation and cost of capital in a clear and systematic fashion.

In the modern business environment, one of the most important tasks for CEOs and CFOs is related to the development of integrated and consistent business valuation models.

Tham & V?lez Pareja`s book is a well-oriented proposal in that sense and could be judged for what it has to offer: an organized and specific approach for structuring and valuating the firm cash flows with a special treatment in Non-Traded firms, and from that point of view a useful tool for fundamental valuation in emerging markets.

The authors begin with a definition of basic concepts in market-based cash flow valuation and a brief review of financial statements and accounting concepts, before explaining in full detail the integrated approach for the construction of four interrelated proforma financial statements: the Balance Sheet, the Income Statement, the Cash Flow Statement, and the annual Cash Budget Statement. These four financial statements form the basic building blocks for the valuation exercise.

Aditionally, Tham & V?lez Pareja have exposed several methods for deriving the firm cash flows. Special emphasis is given to the five advantages of deriving the Free Cash Flow from the Cash Budget Statement: simplicity, usefulness as a managerial tool, consistency, representation of reality and flexibility for purposes of sensitivity and scenario analysis.

Next, the authors have examined some critical issues related to the calculation of the Terminal Value and have exposed the need to guarantee the amount of reinvestment for growth in the Free Cash Flow, showing the importance of specifying the ROMVIC (Return on Market Value of Invested Capital).

The last part of the book is very useful from a practitioner?s point of view, because the case study enables the application of the main topics in the book.

This is not a book about sophisticated tools for valuing real options. It?s a book about how to construct integrated and consistent corporate valuation models, a simple but usually ignored necessity of good corporate financial models.

I would recommend the book to those who clearly understand the main topics of business valuation and its role in corporate finance, and are open-minded to new proposals in a well known field.

If you need to understand the basic fundamentals of valuation, Principles of cash flow valuation, an integrated market-based approach, is the book you need.
The book thoroughly describes valuation techniques, explaining the theory and giving comprehensive examples. Techniques for translating the financial statements into free cash flows and variations of the discounted cash flow approach are well described in a pedagogical way. Few books put the topics (Modigliani-Miller propositions, CAPM, tax shield, investment, cost of capital) in one theoretical system.
Plus, Professors V?lez Pareja and Tham maintains a free website where you can find valuation and cost of capital models.
Principles of cash flow valuation is a rigorous, detailed textbook on topics in valuation for Master finance courses.

In my view, this is an excellent textbook for students who are either becoming acquainted with the discounted cash-flows technique or would like to freshen up their knowledge in the subject.

Great Book-Very Interesting...........2001-04-04

Being a lawyer in NYC, I was very impressed with some Inside the Minds: Interne Lawyers. Although it is impossible to cover every Internet related topic, the book does a good job at covering some very interesting topics. In addition, the individuals portrayed in the book represent a good cross sampling of different talents related to Internet law. I particularly enjoyed the interview with Mark Fischer at Palmer & Dodge. If you are a woman, make sure to also check out Inside the Minds: Leading Women.

I recently read the book entitled "Self-Talk and Grow Rich and was impressed to find out that this book is not just another one of the "get rich schemes", but a book that adheres to the biblical principles for financial wealth.

"Self-Talk and Grow Rich" gives the principles, keys, steps and purposes for individuals who are struggling financially. The book also provides scriptures which supports the confessing of God's word on a daily basis to produce supernatural abundance.

The is also a guide for peope who need help with anxiety, anger, sickness, low self esteem and fear. The book gives biblical instructions on how to use self-talk in any of these areas.

"Self-Talk and Grow Rich" explains how we need to change our attitude towards money and prosperity. The book uses various scriptures to prove that God wants us to be healthy and prosperous and to be a blessing to His kingdom.

I was greatly inspired by the author's personal testimony of how he received a supernatural blessing during financial challenge. He writes how after he daily made faith confessions, and put himself into position to receive, his debt was wiped out.

Shame that it's going out of print..........2005-05-04

I'm surprised no one has written a review about this book before.

Bad luck that it's out of print because it's a real gem. It ties together to schools of wealth and business ideas: the Think and Grow Rich line of thinking and the NLP based communication thinking. In other words it's the inner game and the outer game in the one book.

Ron Holland articulates his ideas very well and provides the evidence of his concepts from his own life.

What makes this a great book is the fact that Holland doesn't claim to have disovered the techniques he uses. He simply says these are the techniques, here's what I have been able to do with them. That makes the book inspirational as well as informative.

First, I will agree with the previous reviewer - this book was self-aggrandizement on the part of the authors.

This affected the content of the book in several ways. The book did read, in parts, like a "pitch" for their services. Also, I am always a bit distrustful of authors who admit they are holding back information, in an attempt to sell you more at a higher rate, at a later date. This, incidentally, made the book a bit "thin". It also upset me just a bit that the Gen-X authors would sell out their generation to huge corporations (it was obvious to me that they were trying to land a big client - not just share their observations about young people). And yes, it was a bit generalized. It seems that they wanted a book simply to justify their careers, without caring much about the quality or content of that book.

Also, please realize this book is a bit outdated. Some of the information is still valid & insightful, but the majority of it is particular to the late 90's.

A final observation is that the false categories of X'ers, which is purely the construct of the authors (the "Hip-Hop", the "Intellectuals", etc) were a bit naive, a bit redundant, and somewhat funny actually to a person trained in sociological method.

Much better book about Gen X'ers -- which are not likely to go out of date for a very long time -- are Generation Debt, Branded: The Buying and Selling of Teenagers, and Culture Jam: The Uncooling of America

Street Trends is an effective book for all marketeers wanting to know what is in the mindsets of the youth market. Its assessment of the market also translates well into some of the trends that hit international markets.

Pretty clever idea: get thousands of people to pay to read your corporate brochure. The authors blatantly pitch their company's services throughout. That's embarrassing. But many of their insights are based on unfounded generalizations -- that today's youth are responsible for the rise in microbrewed beer, or that all future music will contain electronic components. The result: we can't take these so-called researchers seriously. There may be valuable insights in this book, but what can you believe?

Luck from De Luca, Wisdom from Misdom.......1998-08-19

In our quest for The Next Big Thing, many of us have rummaged around in the wrong places, like the drunk who stumbled under the streetlight for hours seeking his keys. Asked why he keeps covering the same ground, he says, "Because that's where the light is!"

In Street Trends, Lopiano-Misdom and De Luca are seeking the keys to hot, new trends - and finding them, too - but not under the bloodless light of statistical research alone (which everyone admits is illuminating ... as far as it goes).

No, these authors venture right into the thicket. They mount an expedition into the surly habitat of those young, independent kids who wouldn't dream of filling out a corny questionnaire, or be caught (duh!) in a focus group.

Whether or not you agree with the authors' observations (and whether or not you'd grant a First Church of Chi-Squared Almighty imprimatur to their naturalist methodology) this apparently modest volume is actually a fascinating, wickedly subversive little book.
