Reforming Asian Socialism examines the process of transition from a centrally planned economy to a market economy, focusing on the development of new institutions and how markets are being created where they did not exist before.

Aspects of the reform process in China and Vietnam are examined. Poland and the Ukraine are used as comparisons, as is North Korea, a country that has not begun to reform. Because China's reforms started in the late 1970s, a decade or more before any other communist country (except Vietnam) began to change, the Chinese economy is examined closely. Some fascinating experiments in novel institutional forms have occurred in Chinese rural industry: firms that have highly unusual ownership structures by comparison with textbook models and Western market-economy practice, have proven to be remarkably successful. China serves as a useful laboratory for the study of transition processes.

The volume addresses questions such as: What new market institutions are being created? To what extent are they developing spontaneously or is the government playing a role? What kinds of restructuring of state firms are actually occurring and how are they being financed? How are contracts made and enforced in the absence of a market-oriented legal system? What are the similarities and differences across the different countries in the microeconomics of transition? Is there an Asian as opposed to European model of reform, or are all the reforms in practice if not in rhetoric similar in some fundamental way?

The Federal Reserve Act of 1913 created the infrastructure for the modern American payments system. Probing the origins of this benchmark legislation, J. Lawrence Broz finds that international factors were crucial to its conception and passage. Until its passage, the United States had suffered under one of the most inefficient payment systems in the world. Serious banking panics erupted frequently, and nominal interest rates fluctuated wildly. Structural and regulatory flaws contributed not only to financial instability at home but also to the virtual absence of the dollar in world trade and payments.

Key institutional features of the Federal Reserve Act addressed both these shortcomings but it was the goal of internationalizing usage of the dollar that motivated social actors to pressure Congress for the improvements. With New York bankers in the forefront, an international coalition lobbied for a system that would reduce internal problems such as recurring panics, and simultaneously allow New York to challenge London's preeminence as the global banking center and encourage bankers to make the dollar a worldwide currency of record. To those who organized the political effort to pass the Act, Broz contends, the creation of the Federal Reserve System was first and foremost a response to international opportunities.

Broz provides an easy to read text. His premises are clear, leading to true understanding. I've read much on this subject, but never such a complete work. It is as economical as can be expected; and I would argue more general than others have claimed. I highly suggest this book, and thank Dr. Broz for his contribution.

A good blend of theory and historical evidence.......2000-02-25

Broz's "The International Origins of the Federal Reserve System" is a excellent example of how single-case qualitative empirical research should be done. By providing a detailed formal theory framework, Broz is able to derive specific hypothesis about the development of the Federal Reserve in a manner that is both scientifically rigorous and historically detailed. While comparison with other cases would have been helpful (and neccessary if the model is to be generalized), this book is one of the best qualitative works in political science in general and political economy in particular in years.

Accessible.......1999-09-29

You can't find a more accessible text for this topic. I have scoured the librarys of academia and find that this text is not only readable and enjoyable, but it is superior in its treatment of subject matter. A look at the index will tell any reader that Mr. Broz's volume is the compleat guide.

use the web.......2002-05-15

This book tries to cover so many things it ends up covering nothing. Apache is addressed on Unix, Linux, Windows, and Mac platforms giving no depth to any single one. Literally half the book is appendices with some covering things like TCP/IP concepts and network troubleshooting. It's all over the map. No focus or usefulness.

The e-commerce section (the reason I bought the book) is a joke. Only 30 pages with 20 of them devoted to a sample site using PHP.

There are a lot of pages on the Web that do a much better, more focused, job of covering this material and it won't cost you anything. Rarely have I ever been this disappointed in a book.

Apache Web Server is the foremost application in its field, having over 60% of the Web Server market. Hawkins' book aims to be both a tutorial and reference in its chosen subject, and to provide the reader with sufficient information and software (on the enclosed CD) to configure and host an E-Commerce web site with Apache...He regularly extols the virtues of open-source software, particularly within the context of a web server, considering that this provides a greater degree of configurability than that of closed-book software. The book is very pleasant to read and handle, is well laid out and facilitates easy referencing. There are three main sections: Basic Concepts; Administration and E-Commerce, each of which is divided into logically organised chapters. Section One covers the basics, explaining Apaches' numerous directives (configuration options), modules, installation procedures (for Unix/Linux, Mac and Windows) and control methods. Section One gives the reader the means to install and configure a basic Web server. The text is very easy to follow, with clear, bold, sequentially numbered headings to the various subdivisions within chapters, enabling the reader to easily flick back and forth through the text to reference what he or she will. The use of courier fonts for command line directives seems logical. An explanation of the terminology used, exhaustively, in later sections of the book is a welcome benefit.

Section Two covers Administration and explains clearly and concisely the extensive number and variety of configuration options and modules available to the reader; virtual hosting, proxies, SSL and database integration to name but a few. Database integration is covered extensively, largely covering MySQL, but Oracle and Informix are covered too. Security is dealt with in extensive detail, an important inclusion, demonstrating the use of SSL (Secure Socket Layer), and its history (there is a lot of interesting historical detail throughout the book). An essential consideration for an E-Commerce site. Other topics are included, such as Dynamic Content with SSI (Server Side Includes), DHTML, url rewriting and performance tuning. The final chapter is brief and discusses the use of Perl and C programming languages to construct Apache modules, referring the user to: Writing Apache Modules with Perl and C by Lincoln Stein and Doug MacEachern [1]. The author refers to pe! rl as the preferred programming language for use with Apache, as mod_Perl was specifically designed for use with Apache, giving far superior performance and ease of use than ?C?.

The final section of the book is rather more of a disappointment. Although the CDROM includes software enabling the user to create a sample E-Commerce site, the topic is covered all too briefly in the book, only three chapters; money collection, database integration and construction of a sample site. The latter is a welcome inclusion, easy to follow and concise. The former are not much help at all, perhaps making money is an alien concept to a friend of the Open Source movement. The author extols the virtues of database interaction using (open source) My_SQL and PHP (Personal Hypertext Pre-processor), rather than the more commercially acceptable Oracle and Cold Fusion. This route would save the reader a nice four figure sum of money, an obvious advantage in a first E-Commerce venture.

The final part of the book is 180 pages of appendices, covering a variety of networking and programming topics to assist the reader in creation of a sample E-Commerce site. Syntax, sample code and detailed instruction are covered more than adequately and very clearly.

Overall, I would consider this an excellent book for a novice intending to create his/her first E-Commerce site, let down only by its lack of detail involving E-Commerce. The book might seem expensive for a paperback, but the inclusion of all the necessary software softens the blow, especially when one considers that the commercial equivalents would cost the reader several thousands of pounds. The book is organised well, omitting most of the code/configuration detail and general techie stuff from the general text, leaving the appendices to act as reference. The appendices are equally logical.

A Useful Reference.......2001-09-02

I have frequently purchased this book as updated issues are released. It categorizes the companies out there in appropriate categories and by number of employees. You also get website addresses as well. Occasionally the infroamtion becomes a bit outdated but in these ever so rapidly changing times, its hard to blame the publisher. The section on Temporary/Permanent Agenices is quite extensive but probably needs to be organized a little better. None the less, this is a good series that can help most job seekers.

This is a great book, I loved reading it. Be careful when you pick it up because you might just get a tad distracted and want to read is all through! Overall, it has some major pointers on saving money, especially when it comes to food. Loads of hints.

This book is just jam-packed full of cost saving gems!! In fact, I have saved countless dollars through better management of my money through tips I learned in this book. Perhaps the best thing about this book were all the great tips for getting both summer employment and grant money. Lastly, unlike so many other money saving books I have attempted to plod through, I really found The Debt Free Grad fun to read. If I enjoyed my course work reading as much as this book, I would be an English major instead!

Murray Baker's Debt Free Graduate is an excellent resource. I work in college-level education, and have found the book to be very helpful in preparing information for students about how to be financially fit. Baker uses really practical examples of how we can save money in every aspect of our lives. I have definately picked up some tips that I can use, on everything from mutual funds to decorating my apartment for less... I highly recommend this book. It's a fun, easy read.

Here's a book I wish someone gave me before I started College!

I was given this book as a gift and expected it to be a little difficult to read as it appeared to be a 'money' book. So I put it off a few weeks. Once I started reading, I was hooked. It's practical, comical and actually leaves you feeling excited about saving money, still enjoying the college experience but graduating with little to no debt. I believe that if I read this before I starting college, I would have had little problem graduating debt free. Some of the ideas are very unique and even discuss summer jobs, great tips on buying course books and housing. Other ideas are necessities every college student should know now, but also for life and in any career, such as some of the cost-cutting ideas and optimal ways to pay off any debt that may remain. The Debt Free Grad should be required reading for every college student!

Although there are a few good tips on how to save money, such as how to save on taxes, most of the information contained in this book is common sense. This book will show you how to get the most bang for your buck but, as you would expect, the only way to get that buck is from parents, loans and scholarships.

Traces the company's seventy-year evolution from a small family-owned company operating drive-in theaters into a multi-billion dollar corporation deriving 12% of its revenues from movie theaters, 50% from its ownership of the Neiman Marcus Group, and the remaining 38% from the businesses of its diversified publishing subsidiary, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich (HBJ). The author focuses on two themes that have had a strong influence on the company's success. The first of these is the issue of succession and professionalization in a family firm: Harcourt General is one of the rare companies in which the founding family has both maintained a controlling interest and sustained active participation of family members in corporate management into the third generation. The second theme relates to Harcourt General's strategy of diversification by acquisition, particularly during the mergers-and-acquisitions period of the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the company struggled to expand into the three major businesses mentioned above.
