The financial crises across Asia in 1997-98 ignited fierce debate about domestic economic weaknesses and flaws in the international financial system. Some analysts blamed Asian governments for inadequate prudential supervision, widespread failures of corporate governance and even "crony capitalism." Others assailed the inherent instability of global financial markets and what they considered to be hasty and ill-conceived liberalization taken at the behest of western-dominated international financial institutions. In this volume a distinguished group of political scientists, economists, and practitioners examines the political and economic causes and consequences of the crisis. To what extent were domestic economic factors to blame for the crisis? Why were some economies more prone to crisis than others? What are the costs and benefits of international financial liberalization? Who bears the risks and the costs of measures taken to reduce them? And what are the prospects for reform of the International Monetary Fund, international banking standards, and foreign exchange systems?

Disappointing.......2002-08-31
Ravenhill and Noble have edited a disappointing collection. The topic is of great importance, but the collection is shallow. This might be because it was brought together rather quickly, when the discussion of the Asian Crisis was still somewhat recent. However, the contributors do not come to grips with the long term consequences of the crisis and nor do they offer a very deep analysis of the genesis of the crisis. There is little deep discussion of over-production, global production trends, inequality or poverty. I expected more from the editors and authors.

What I thought of this in 1996.......2002-09-05
The rapid sublimation of the Internet into the commercial world has been nothing short of amazing, although in retrospect it seems like it was heading towards it all along. Early commercial networks like The Source and CompuServe had the right idea of providing information on the desktop on demand, but they were limited in both what they could offer and who they could offer these services to by both logistics and economics (namely establishing modem lines in every community, the need for the consumer to own a modem, etc.). The Internet, evolving at the same time, had the resources and the connections, but unless you were a government researcher or an academic, you weren't allowed access. The creation of the commercial backbone by CIX bridged the gap between these two worlds, and the advent of the World Wide Web has provided the needed graphical user interface necessary for almost anyone to utilize the connectivity. Businesses are no longer wondering if they should become part of the online world, but how to do so and in what form.
Mary Cronin does a good job in Doing Business on the Internet and More Doing Business in the Internet [1] of explaining what the "network of networks" offers businesses, mainly through the use of case studies of businesses who have already opened up an electronic storefront. Although this book is written and meant for managers and executives with little net experience, the case studies provide some insights even for long-time users. The methods of doing business on the Internet are fairly obvious--from moving customer service from one-to-one phone exchanges to the one-to-many exchange offered by newsgroups and updated online catalogs by FTP--but the case studies illustrate how these methods achieve results. This focus on the cost-benefit to the bottom line is what conservative managers are looking for before they dedicate resources to achieving an Internet presence.
The speed at which this part of industry is growing and changing is not lost, and can be best illustrated by the book itself. Published only last year, it has already been outdated in many areas. Mary Cronin spends a lot of time reassuring businesses that the "Acceptable Use Policy" of the National Science Foundation is no longer a hindrance to commerce on the Internet; this policy is hardly ever mentioned today, now that the commercial side is fully two-thirds of the Internet and growing daily. Cronin mentions the World Wide Web only in passing, while in the past year it has been the Web that has brought the Internet into the mainstream and will likely be the vehicle that the majority of Americans and the world will use to connect to businesses.
Change is hard to deal with, and grizzled net veterans are prone to reminisce about the "good ol' days" when business was not a part of the Internet. It is likely that older business managers have fond memories of their own of days when acronyms like HTML and FTP were not part of their marketing plans. But, as Cronin correctly observes, the future is in increased connection and communication in all aspects of our lives, and someone is likely to use it to make money. This book shows that some people already have and provides some excellent tips on how to follow their example.
I think the book is too old !.......2000-05-22
I read the book in 2000,but this book was published in 1995. There are a lot of ideas not match today. But, this is not mean the book too old to read. I suggest if you have experiences about EC, you could read this book to rethink your step is correct or wrong. But, if your are a new person who want understand what EC is.the book maybe not good for you.

I had a few problems with this book.......2007-03-23
I'm a professional resume writer; I purchased this book among others as a resource. I was disappointed for three main reasons: 1) most of the resumes were written in very traditional formats; nothing clever or innovative 2) the same style seems to be used over and over...each one looks like a template 3) my biggest complaint is the lack of a resume index. There are 37 resume examples but no where in this book can you find out which page relates to healthcare, IT or manufacturing. Therefore, you have to flip through every single resume to find the industry or position you are seeking. Not user-friendly at all! I finally took the time to categorize each resume myself, print out my own index and tape it inside the book cover. However, I haven't really even used this book as a reference...I really don't recommend this one at all.
Don't expect miracles.......2007-03-07
This was a useful book to have, but don't expect miracles. You have to go through lots of worksheets to define your key points. And the authors correctly point out that the resume is only supposed to get you an interview, anyway, not tell your life story. The best insight from the book was to distinguish "work content skills" from "transferable skills." For someone making a lateral move, this pointed that my weaknesses would be work content skills, giving me the chance to prepare for objections. The biggest deficiency in this book was the lack of information on a cover letter or likely questions that would come up in the interview. The cover letter, resume and interview are a package.
What a resource!.......2006-04-03
I like this book and found it very helpful! The chapter overviews, worksheets and sample resumes are terrific. The Appendix is rich with information. The quotes add a nice touch.
Same Stuff, Different Packaging.......2005-08-07
There are a great many innovative books out there on resume writing; this is not one of them. At this point, the only new approach to resume writing would be to make yourself a hologram of you speaking your resume--the formats in this book are just like everything else out there on the market. If you've looked at other books on resumes, you won't need this one. If you're new to the wonderful world of the working, you can purchase this and see what the latest standards are. Or you could search the web and save your money.

Although this book has a few good points,it is basically just a religious tract in book form. If you are looking for a book that has some real meat in it about how to do well in retirement--and Bible-thumping offends you, as it does me--give this one a pass. I seldom can bring myself to throw away a book, but this one went into the dumpster with no regrets.

Before reading Foundations of Corporate Empire I was not aware of the other book Birth of the Multinational: 2000 Years of Ancient Business History--From Ashur to Augustus, now I still think do I have to buy that one too? For me it is a fascinating book which is the outcome of a detailed investigation and work.
By the way, I would be pleased if they put more stress on the Roman Empire, Ottoman Empire and also South East Asia, Inkas, Azteks etc.
But I can recommend this book as a guideline of historical evolution of the modern business organizations and cultures.

Foundations of Corporate Empire is a dreary title for a business book that turns out to be anything but. It is in fact a sweeping, yet remarkably readable, history of globalization that marshals impressive evidence to prove something we should have learned by now: There is simply nothing new under the sun, and anyone who thinks business just discovered the joys of free trade and global markets yesterday has a lot to learn.Doing the teaching here are two Canadian academics: Karl Moore, a professor of strategic management at McGill University, and David Lewis, a historian with a wide range of interests, including ancient Mesopotamia. That, in fact, is where the authors start, tracing the development of business cultures from the Bronze Age and the "first recorded multinational"--a family trading business in Assyria nearly 4,000 years ago--up to the internet age and America's globe-spanning technology giants.Unfortunately, this book was finished before the tech bubble burst, making some of its conclusions as obsolete as those Assyrian traders. But this does nothing to detract from its main points--that today's economic and corporate structures are the product of generations of evolution and that each nation favours the model best suited to its own culture, institutions and history."Many of today's economic structures existed in prototype form several thousand years ago," the authors note early on, and then set out to prove it. They make connections between the business leaders of Mesopotamia and modern German corporations, between classical Athens and Britain at its height, between ancient and modern China, and between the mighty Roman and even mightier American empires. Some of the links are obvious, such as the mass production and technological developments stemming from the military requirements of both ancient Rome and the United States. Others seem more of a stretch.What is particularly refreshing is that this is no apologia for the current wave of globalization or its apparent American character. A novel and intriguing look at the history of modern civilization and the corporate underpinnings that have pervaded throughout. Somewhat general but nonetheless both accurate and interesting. Original and entertaining. Great Book

Among the major papers are "Alternative Approaches to the Theory of Choice in Risk-Taking Situations," a masterly survey of subjective probability and choice theory, and "The Theory of Risk Aversion," an exposition of the theory of choice under uncertainty.

Description:
This paper studies how financial globalization affects debt structure in emerging economies. We find that by accessing international markets, firms increase their long-term debt and extend their debt maturity. In contrast, with financial liberalization, long-term debt decreases and the maturity structure shifts to the short term for the average firm. These effects are stronger in economies with less developed domestic financial systems. The evidence is consistent with financial integration having opposite effects on the firms that are able to integrate with world markets and obtain financing globally, relative to the firms that rely on domestic financing only.

Suriname might have been a very bad place to invest in in the past. However this does not mean it will be forever the case. The new government has put a lot of effort in stabilizing the currency (low inflation), creating an attractive environment to invest in and boosting the economy. The results aren't shocking but they are certainly on the right track.
I admit that the price is a little steep, there are cheaper introductions to Suriname (investment wise or not) available on the market.
Wrong place to invest!!!.......1999-05-09
Most likely one of the worse places on Planet EARTH to invest any capital;no matter how little. The local currency is devaluating at a rate faster than the speed of light. Even purchasing the book would be considered an UNFORTUNATE investment.
