Preface.
"Contributing significantly to the democracy deficit literature, Aman espouses a re-invigoarated citizenship through domestic law reform, and is, perhaps, surprisingly, sanguine about the future of the 'globalizing state' "
World Trade Review
"Anyone who takes the politics of law seriously must read The Democracy Deficit to understand how legal neoliberalism rationalizes economic globalization at the expense of basic democratic values. With analytic rigor and passion, Aman also brilliantly shows how public values, embedded in domestic laws such as administrative law, are an arena and a resource for reshaping globalization."
Christine B. Harrington, New York University
"Offers a powerful analysis of the effects of globalization on local governance and a stunningly original strategy for responding to it through domestic law reform. The book's conclusion is critically important: domestic law reforms can shape the meaning of globalization in America and present a blueprint for more accountable globalization elsewhere. The book's powerful analysis and pathbreaking originality set scholarship on a new course and make this one of the best discussions of globalization ever."
Frank W. Munger, past president of the Law and Society Association
"Students will appreciate the chance to get away from the cases and read a well-written, thought-provoking text that shows the continued relevance of administrative lawa in today's society."
The Law and Politics Book Review
Economic globalization has had a chilling effect on democracy since markets now do some of the work that governments used to do through the political process. More than two decades of deregulation have made a healthy economy appear to depend on unrestrained markets. But appearances are misleadingglobalization is also a legal and political process. The future of democracy in the twenty-first century depends on the ability of citizens to reclaim a voice in taming globalization through domestic politics and law reform.
"The book's topic could not be more important: how do we adapt contemporary democratic governance- and contemporary administrative law- to the challenge of a globalizing world?"Kal Raustiala, UCLA School of Law
Can citizens govern globalization? Aman argues that they can, and that domestic law has a crucial role to play in this process. He proposes to redefine the legal distinction between public and private to correspond to the realities of the new role of the private sector in delivering public services, and thereby to bring crucial sectors of globalization back within the scope of democratic reform.
Basing his argument on the history of the policies that led to globalization, and the current policies that sustain it, Aman advocates specific reforms meant to increase private citizens' influence on globalization. He looks at particular problem areas usually thought to be domestic in nature, such as privatization, prisons, prescription drugs, and the minimum wage, as well as constitutional structural issues such as federalism and separation of powers.

Vault.com has more up -to-date contact info.......2003-02-05
Try Vault.com for more up-to-date, 2003 info than is contained the this 1998 book.
A solid starting point.......2002-01-22
This book is not a how-to manual for landing a job on Wall Street. Just as the title says, it is simply a guide to the recruiters. Scanlon and Hunt have broken the book into three parts for your reference.
First, the introduction and chapters 1 through 3 are not quite part of the book. If you look at the page numbers, roman numerals still greet you. This should show you that it is not the primary focus of the book. The introduction tells you about recruiters and job searching in this field. In the first three chapters, some good information from the authors explain resumes, cover letters, and interviews. Knowing how the recruiters think is always a leg up on the competition.
The meat of the book is the "directory." This lets you know the name, title, firm, and address of Wall Street recruiters. Remember that people change jobs and titles fairly often. This information is merely a starting point. Just knowing the companies out there allows me to do some research to make my application that much more appealing. It also allows me to be more knowledgeable in the interview. Use the information to find the current recruiter. Don't assume the listed name is still in charge of recruiting.
The last part is not as helpful. It breaks down the field into four parts (generalist, financial services, insurance, and venture capital). Here, the authors index names with company for the recruiter with a more specialized function. This will allow you to finetune your search, but given that people change jobs, the information here is less helpful than the addresses.
This book is a good starting point for your quest for a job on Wall Street, but alone, it will not be of use. It is merely a solid starting point to find out who is out there recruiting.
Save your money and buy a newspaper instead.......2001-12-11
What a waste of money! After sending about 160 letters to the various recruiters listed in this book, about 90 were returned as undeliverable due to firms out of business and people moving to different firms. The headhunter business is extremely fluid and recruiters apparently do not remain with a firm for any length of time. The book also advises people not to call a recruiter on the telephone. This must be an attempt to alleviate the recruiters from having to actually speak to a person without having a sure shot position open for them. The authors must be former recruiters because they seem to write from a recruiter's point of view and not a job seeker's. The book's advice and how-to sections are common sense; anyone with half a brain uses the steps outlined in the book already without having to be told to do so. All that this book accomplishes is to line the pockets of the authors at the expense of people who are looking for valid resources that can assist them in a job search. Ask your Uncle Ralph if he knows of anyone who is hiring and don't give these two useless people,(Christopher Hunt and Scott Scanlon) any of your hard earned money, especially if you're currently unemployed. P.S. the only reason my review has one star is because I wasn't offered the option of no stars.

Book Description
This book reports and interprets the results of a major research study that investigated the shopping behavior of the mature consumer with regard to the principal types of direct response marketing: catalog shopping, direct mail, media ads, telephone solicitation, direct selling, party-plan selling, and in-home demonstrations. Sponsored by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and the Andrus Foundation, the project represents the most thorough treatment of the older consumer published to date. Marketing managers, direct marketing specialists, and retailers will find here the data they need to make informed decisions and develop appropriate marketing strategies for reaching a growing, and often relatively affluent, segment of the U.S. consumer population. The study was based on an 8-page questionnaire to which more than 2500 subjects nationwide responded and which yielded information on respondents' willingness to purchase from various direct sources, actual purchase behavior, preferences for purchasing from direct sources, likes and dislikes about in-home shopping, and the characteristics that influence purchasing decisions. The authors also compared shopping behaviors and attitudes of older consumers with younger groups and analyzed differences on the basis of demographic and psychological variables. A wide range of practical findings issued from the study, including the fact that many mature consumers associate high pressure sales tactics with in-home shopping and evince a high degree of distrust of direct selling techniques. In the final chapter, the authors present practical recommendations for formulating and maintaining a marketplace offering that is satisfying to the mature shopper. Numerous tables and figures illustrate the statistical conclusions drawn from the study.

Book Description
Currency markets, worth almost $2 trillion per day in trade, link the world together. Yet few people know how they work and why they are prone to instability and bouts of panic. This book, neither a technical manual nor a get-rich-quick tract, takes the reader on a guided tour of the places, the machines, the circuitry and the people involved in moving the world’s money. From the simple to the complex, currency traders, market analysts, money managers and payments systems architects show their workplaces and reveal their day-to-day experiences. The book will give the reader a graphic picture of the geographical and structural organization of global currency markets and the people who operate them. The tour through the volatile and rapidly evolving world of the money changers provides a basic orientation for deciphering complex causes of yet unforeseen financial events.
Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended. General readers; all levels of undergraduates. --- IngoWalter, March 2007, Choice .......2007-05-12
The full review in March 2007, CHOICE, written by Ingo Walter, an eminent scholar in the field of international finance, was helpful to me. Here are some excerpts:
"This is a nontechnical exploration into the mechanics of the foreign exchange market, which Williams (Guilford College) nicely motivates by starting with an ordinary retail transaction--an ATM withdrawal of local currency in a foreign country--and tracing it through the wholesale foreign exchange markets to show what actually happens. In doing so, the author provides an intuitive way to explore the most important and arguably the most efficient market in the world, which makes international trade, investment, and financial transfers possible......The discussion is up-to-date, and the use of dialogue makes the book very accessible to the intelligent but uninformed reader. Summing Up: Highly recommended. General readers; all levels of undergraduates." --- Ingo Walter, Seymour Milstein Professor of Finance, Corporate Governance and Ethics at the Stern School of Business, New York University.
A fine introduction to currency markets for students and the interested general reader.......2007-03-12
Robert G. Williams has written an entertaining and informative book about how the world currency markets work. He starts with a story about a summer trip he and some students took to Europe and the impact the fluctuations in the local currency against the dollar impacted their budget for the trip and how he was able to manage that best through smarter currency exchange.
The rest of the book has him taking us through the different aspects of currency trade, the size of the market, who the players are, the role of computers and software versus people exchanging currency on the trading floor, the various philosophies of how these markets work, and how currency exchange affects you and me even without our knowing it.
I don't know if all the conversations he discusses in the book are devices to keep what could have been a dry subject more entertaining or if he is doing some very good reporting. In the larger sense, it doesn't matter because we read the book for the information the author shares with us. That he also makes it quite readable is quite an achievement. There are a helpful number of charts, tables, and graphs. They do not get in the way and are all pretty easy to understand.
This is a very good introduction to these important and quite huge markets (bigger than you would likely guess) for the student and the interested general reader. Since the news often talks about the movements of currency and how this or that is over or undervalued, you might want to bolster your own understanding of what is really going on rather than the vague arm waving of the journalists.
This interesting book is a great place to start.
The Money Changers - Accessible and interesting for the lay reader.......2007-03-10
Reading The Money Changers: A Guided Tour Through Global Currency Markets by Robert Williams was both exceptionally educational and entertaining. I am an art professor and not knowledgeable about economics. However, I have traveled a lot overseas and have always been confused about rates of foreign exchange and why they move up and down in a way that seems so unpredictable. This book explained a great deal about why but also explored how this market works and how it has changed with the introduction of the Euro. For someone who is not an expert The Money Changers is challenging to read because the complexities of the economics are there; but the writing is exceptionally clear and the stories about the people who work in these markets are so engaging that the book kept my interest to the end.
Great overview of the currency markets.......2007-01-14
Definitely not a technical treatise like the books written by Boris Schlossberg or Kathy Lien, but does a wonderful job of giving those interested in the fx markets a toe-hold on how the world's biggest capital market operates. I personally enjoyed the interview section with fx traders and currency strategists at JPMorgan tremendously. However, reading the detailed explanation on how the CHIPs settlement system works was slightly tedious.
truly "a guided tour through global currency markets".......2006-10-09
This book, as the preface states, "is not a technical manual for
business professionals or a tract on how to get rich betting on
currencies. Rather, it is a guided tour of the places, the machines,
the circuitry, and the people involved in moving world money".
Given this is what the book is about, it does a wonderful job.
The author is obviously very well read and intelligent and
probably ought to be teaching with Lawrence Summers and Robert J.
Barrow in Cambridge, MA. However, I must confess that I cannot
agree with the author in the final pages of the book where he
tries to make the case for financial austerity given Britain's
currency crisis from 1958-1968. He calls this section of the
book "Long-run lessons for the dollar's loss of hegemony", and
caused me to remember the Jimmy Carter rhetoric that American's
need to do with less. On pages 233-234 the author states the
United States needs to cut back on borrowing from foreign sources
and states "It would mean a change in relative living standards
for people in the United States, but it would not be the end of
the world". It is a sad ending for what was a great book up until
that point. And from my point of view is not correct as long as
the Japanese continue at their current savings rate and as long as
the Japanese continue to devalue the yen vis-a-vis the dollar.
