Book Description
Dissatisfied with the explanations of the business cycle provided by the Keynesian, monetarist, New Keynesian, and real business cycle schools, Edmund Phelps has developed from various existing strands-some modern and some classical--a radically different theory to account for the long periods of unemployment that have dogged the economies of the United States and Western Europe since the early 1970s. Phelps sees secular shifts and long swings of the unemployment rate as structural in nature. That is, they are typically the result of movements in the natural rate of unemployment (to which the equilibrium path is always tending) rather than of long-persisting deviations around a natural rate itself impervious to changing structure. What has been lacking is a "structuralist" theory of how the natural rate is disturbed by real demand and supply shocks, foreign and domestic, and the adjustments they set in motion.
To study the determination of the natural rate path, Phelps constructs three stylized general equilibrium models, each one built around a distinct kind of asset in which firms invest and which is important for the hiring decision. An element of these models is the modern economics of the labor market whereby firms, in seeking to dampen their employees' propensities to quit and shirk, drive wages above market-clearing levels-the phenomenon of the "incentive wage"--and so generate involuntary unemployment in labor-market equilibrium. Another element is the capital market, where interest rates are disturbed by demand and supply shocks such as shifts in profitability, thrift, productivity, and the rate of technical progress and population increase. A general-equilibrium analysis shows how various real shocks, operating through interest rates upon the demand for employees and through the propensity to quit and shirk upon the incentive wage, act upon the natural rate (and thus equilibrium path).
In an econometric and historical section, the new theory of economic activity is submitted to certain empirical tests against global postwar data. In the final section the author draws from the theory some suggestions for government policy measures that would best serve to combat structural slumps.

Book Description
This book presents a historical investigation of the theoretical development of contemporary Equilibrium Business Cycle Theory (EBCT). The author examines the central features of the EBCT by tracing both the history of business cycle theory and the history of econometrics. These historical analyses make clear two cental principles of the EBCT: its optimization foundation and its economic strategy. Following along these lines, the author argues that the EBCT succeeds the tradition of the Austrian cycle theory that attempted to incorporate the cycle with classical equilibrium doctrine. He further argues that the EBCT's econometric strategy is only a child of the Cowles commission method. Presenting a fresh viewpoint of interwar macroeconomics in very readable style, this book brings the period back into the heart of macroeconomic thinking today.

Essays on the Great Depression
ASIN: 052164173X |
Book Description
It is a commonly held belief that, in 1936, Keynes' General Theory ushered in a new era in economic thought, with faith in the free market being replaced by reliance on systematic government intervention as a means of keeping the economy on an even keel. This book surveys the writings of a large number of economists in the interwar years and argues that the "Keynesian Revolution" is a myth, and that the "new economics" was a careful and selective synthesis of an "old economics" that had been developing for twenty years or more.
Customer Reviews:
Laidler skips the mathematical models of Keynes and Pigou.......2004-10-16
Laidler writes the following in the preface to his book :"...I have relied first and foremost on my reading of primary sources...In this way,I hope that readers who disagree with me about any particular point will be able to go directly to the sources of my views and test for themselves those views,as well as their own, against the evidence. After all,the decisive element in any debate in the history of economic thought must always be what the primary liturature actually says."(p.xiv).Unfortunately ,Laidler(L)doesn't follow his own advice.A major portion of the evidence is the mathematical models constructed by Pigou in his 1933 book, The Theory of Unemployment(TU), and by Keynes in his 1936 book ,The General Theory(GT).None of the mathematical modeling of Keynes or Pigou appears anywhere in L's book.In fact,it appears that Laidler deliberately skipped all of the relevant primary mathematical evidence. This lacuna is so great that it would be a waste of the potential reader's time to attempt to follow L in his unsupported claims and conjectures. Finally, Keynes didn't fabricate his GT.It is easily derived from chapters 3,10,20 and 21 of the GT.Pigou's special theory is easily derived from chapters 8-10 of Part II of TU.Keynes then compares the two theories in his appendix to chapter 19 in great detail.Keynes shows that Pigou's theory is that full employment will always automatically result if the real wage is equal to the marginal product of labor.Let w equal a fixed uniform money wage.Let p be the general price level in Pigou and the expected general price level in Keynes.Let MPL be the marginal product of labor in a short run analysis with the capital stock held constant.Pigou's special theory states that a full employment, macroscopic level of output occurs if w/p,the real wage, equals the MPL(w/p=MPL).Keynes's general theory of employment occurs if and only if w/p=MPL/(mpc+mpi).The marginal propensity to spend on consumption goods is denoted as mpc and the marginal propensity to spend on investment goods(factories, plants, equipment and machinery)is denoted as mpi .Pigou's theory is a special case of Keynes's general theory that occurs when mpc+mpi=1.Only in this case would you have no involuntary unemployment. If mpc+mpi is less than 1 then some amount of labor will always be involuntarily unemployed.It(mpc+mpi=1) requires that the economy is always operating on the boundary of the Production Possibilities Curve. The potential reader is advised not to waste his time and money purchasing this book.

Book Description
The new classical approach to macroeconomics, which assumes that people gather and use economic information efficiently, has been the most important theoretical advance since the Keynesian revolution of the 1930s. This hook surveys the major contributions of the "second generation" of proponents of the new classical approach, emphasizing real business cycle theories and applying them to a variety of phenomena.
The chapters include expositions of growth theory, real models of business fluctuations, the informational role of prices, consumption, fiscal policy, rules versus discretion in monetary policy, time consistency and policy, and monetary models. Although the chapters are aimed at advanced undergraduate- and graduate-level students, they will also be of interest to researchers who are looking for a compact and original exposition of the new classical macroeconomics.

Book Description
Focusing on the period of Milton Friedman's collaboration with Anna J. Schwartz, from 1948 to 1991, this work examines the history of debates between Friedman and his critics over money's causal role in business cycles. Professor Hammond shows that critics' reactions were grounded in two distinctive features of Friedman and Schwartz's way of doing economic analysis--their National Bureau business cycle methods and Friedman's Marshallian methodology. Drawing extensively on unpublished materials, Professor Hammond's treatment offers new insights on Milton Friedman's attempts to settle debates with his critics and his eventual recognition of the methodological impediments.

Book Description
For generations we've been taught: Tithe to the church.
Ironically, the Bible speaks of something entirely different. Throw Open the Floodgates chronicles how the author's personal journey to understand the tithe uncovered a new, refreshing portrait of our loving Heavenly Father. Throw Open the Floodgates takes you on a breathtaking journey through the scriptures and shows God's clear intention for giving and tithing for the modern-day church. What you read will both surprise and excite you. No longer will you view the tithe as a stale religious tax, but as a rich invitation to actively participate in a work that is completely in keeping with the gracious and loving nature of God. Throw Open the Floodgates will revolutionize your views of New Testament giving and the mission of the local church in the building of the Kingdom of God.
Customer Reviews:
Know what God says about the tithe? Think again!.......2004-08-19
This book is a refreshing new look at God's true intent for the tithe, as revealed in the Scriptures. Many Christian organizations today have cast the tithe as a divine tax for conveniently funding their going concerns. By extension, God has become the divine taxman who expects believers to tow the line with their pocketbooks. Whigham's book challenges that notion with another interpretation of the Scriptures that will cause the reader to rethink not only the tithe, but the nature of God Himself. Some Christian leaders will feel threatened by this read, but let the chips fall where they may...

Customer Reviews:
Close - but no cigar.......2005-10-21
I was disappointed that the "secret" in janitorial marketing was to focus on accounts that only need 2 cleanings a month and can be charged $199 for that effort. If a place is so clean that it only needs a vacuuming and restroom cleaning once every two weeks - then it seems unlikely they would even bother to hire out. As stated in the book, they probably do some of the cleaning themselves - I agree, so why not do all of it themselves? Most business owners are savvy enough to get a couple bids before signing a contract - none of the other cleaning services would estimate a 2 hour job at $199 per month.....more like $50 per month. Furthermore, the idea that the 1 hour time to clean can actually be done in 1/2 half hour...is really rather ludicrous. Thus - the whole premise of the book seems to fall flat. I suspect a person can make a six figures a year in janitorial, but it has more to do with top notch delivery and hard work than "secret" marketing focus. On the plus side - lots of good common sense, business, and organization "pearls". Would have been a better read for about 10 bucks - but the key to six figure income is obviously - overcharging. In summary - six figures a year in the cleaning business is best achieved by writing a book claiming to show how to make a six figure income jumping into janitorial.

What an odd little book. When purchasing this book, I expected it to be a bit outdated since it is now 4 years old. What I didn't expect was to receive a tutorial in Quicken 2000. This book's primary focus is not websites, but how to use Quicken to manage your personal finances. It really should be called The Idiot's Guide to Quicken 2000. Quicken is probably a fine program, (...) I thought I was buying a book that would lead me to websites, not lead my through a software program.
For someone completely new to personal finance, one may be able to extract some fundamental principles which may make this book worthwhile. For someone like myself who is searching for useful websites and online research tools, this book falls flat.

If You Are a Complete Idiot, This Book is For You.......2001-03-08
Believe the title! If you read BusinessWeek and have Internet access, this book is a waste of your time. While it defines the most basic terms of the Internet and investing (which you already know if you read the business section of your newspaper or a business magazine), it does not explain the more intricate methods of investing. The book is really a compendium of web sites. For example, instead of explaining HOW TO DO fundamental analysis, it tells you to go read a web site. Save your money. Search the web at www.dogpile.com with the term "investing" and get the same results free, in an instant.
Road Map for beginners.......2000-12-31
I am a self-confessed rank beginner in the world of investing in general and online investing in particular.
This book starts you off with the REAL basics - ie assuming no knowledge of connecting to the internet (admittedly tedious for most these days...) and then guides you by the hand through various websites where enourmous amounts of information are found...
I don't imagine it is the almanac of investing for a moment...but it doesn't promise to be either. More of a roadmap - showing what's out and about to use as you get more proficient at investing.
I would like to see what an actual trader thinks of it...but seems to be a refreshingly unpretentious place to start for the utterly confused...if not completely idiotic.

very helpful!.......2000-04-25
This book was a lifesaver when I decided to jump into the waters of investing. With chapters to devoted to different aspects of investing, it was very easy to find exactly what I was looking for. And the book didn't stop with definitions like so many of the books I picked up -- it told me where to go on the Web to apply what I'd learned. This book is great for anyone that knows they should be investing, but who needs that extra "push" to get moving!
Too much of a spoonfeed!.......1999-06-09
OK, the book says it is for idiot's but come on, don't mean that literally! If you are a wee bit technical and understand the online world this book has a few chapters you can easily skip. Also, the author does not care to explain stuff like index funds, the various industry indexes, etc. The book has a load of good web links in it though. I wish the author had listed all the links at the end of the book in an appendix.
You can live without this book. The same information is available for free online.
What are ya waitin' for?.......1999-05-03

Lambs Being Led to the Slaughter.......2000-12-21
Taking people with little investment experience and little technology knowledge and teaching them a little about investing in Internet stocks is inappropriate at best. That's like entering elderly people who move slowly into the running of the bulls in Pamplona. People are going to get hurt. Avoid this subject, and this book.
Here are some of the observations the author makes. "Investing in Internet stocks makes good sense." "With information, intelligence, and patience, you will be successfully investing in Internet stocks." "Investors willing to step out just a little on the risk side may find the rewards outstanding." Well, since the book came out, owning any of the Internet stocks has only led to losing a lot of money.
Why then did a rate the book at 2 stars rather than 1? Well, it does have some cautions in it. "Don't put your life savings into Internet stocks . . . ." Amen! You are encouraged to buy quality companies, hold the stocks, keep your expenses low, use mutual funds, watrch your risk (based on your stomach acid levels and sleepless nights), diversify, and have fun. Well, you would have been out of Internet stocks before the book came out if you followed that advice literally.
Many Internet companies are going out of business as they run out of cash. To the book's credit, this risk is finally pointed out briefly on pages 183 and 184.
Naturally, if many stocks were going to fall 50-99%, this was a great time to sell the stocks short. This is first mentioned briefly as an opportunity on page 147. But brand new investors should not be selling short in volatile categories.
Here's my advice. Buy a lottery ticket instead. You have the same chance of making money, and because the unit cost is smaller, you will lose less money.
Stick to things you know where the odds are in your favor. Read Common Sense About Mutual Funds by John Bogle instead if you want a useful perspective on how new investors can make money.

Book Description
The Corporate Triangle draws together the work of three leading economists to give a new and important view of the international differences in corporate systems. For students and specialists this short text succinctly addresses the failure of economic theory to construct an acceptable concept of the nature of the firm, and examines how this can be corrected. The authors criticise the concept that the enterprise is only an investment project and demonstrate that this neglects the contribution of labour to the capacity of the firm to add value, and be a source of long-term income. The book also takes a historical approach to show that the differences between corporate systems can be seen as stages in organisational development. This is critical in gaining an understanding of both the processes that have made modern enterprises what they are today, and the internal systems that they will need for their future success. For all those who study economics and international business the contributions to this book will give a new perspective on the role of the firm in the international economic system and the various forms of market economy to which they contribute.
