Book Description

The economy of Iraq has fluctuated wildly since the 1950s. It has been affected by changes in governments, by wars, and by general instability. This book analyzes a complex subject and is especially timely at this critical juncture in the history of Iraq, the Middle East, and international relations. Abbas Alnasrawi traces the growth of the Iraqi economy since 1950, assesses its present state of crisis and underdevelopment, and explores its prospects for recovery. Alnasrawi contends that the economic development of Iraq was shaped by the rise in oil revenue, the war between Iran and Iraq, and the invasion of Kuwait and its aftermath. The discussion begins with the burst of Iraq's oil industry and the development policies under the monarchy. Subsequent chapters highlight development planning during the first ten years of the republic, the development plans of the ruling Baath party, the distructive consequences of the Iran-Iraq war and the recent invasion of Kuwait, and the future of the Iraqi economy to the year 2010. This in-depth examination puts this subject into a manageable context for students of the Middle East, multinational oil, Third World development, and international relations.

3 out of 5 stars The Economy of Iraq.......2001-07-23

Alnasrawi does not so much survey the Iraqi economy as concentrate on two key aspects, the oil industry and the Ba`th Party's policies. The latter includes not only specifically economic decisions (such as the various national development and investment plans) but also the enormous impact of Saddam Husayn's two wars (against Iran and the Desert Storm coalition) on Iraq's economic destiny. The author concludes his study with a particularly interesting consideration of Iraq's economic future.

Alnasrawi begins this assessment by noting that (measured in 1980 prices) Iraq in 1960 had a GDP of about $8.7 billion. Thanks mainly to oil exports, the economy grew to the point that in 1979 it reached $54 billion. Then, thanks to Saddam's many mistakes, it declined to $10 billion-or, about where it had been thirty years earlier. But things are actually worse than they appear, for Iraq's population tripled in the intervening years, meaning that the per capita income in 1993 was about a third of what it was in 1960. (And given recent trends, it is probably yet much lower in 1995.) In fact, per capita income has by now reverted to where it was in the 1940s. How, then, looks the future? Alnasrawi argues that even if the authorities in Baghdad started doing everything right, the country will "labor under a vicious cycle of debt and underdevelopment" for many years. Per capita income will not return to its 1950s levels for decades; thanks to the Ba`th and Saddam Husayn, "The economic future of Iraq looks bleak indeed."

    Book Description

Exciting the Industry of Mankind is the first comprehensive book about George Berkeley's revolutionary views on money and banking. Berkeley broke the conceptual link between money and metallic substance in The Querist, a work published between 1735 and 1737 in Dublin, consisting entirely of questions. Exciting the Industry of Mankind explains what economic and social forces caused Berkeley to write The Querist in response to a major economic crisis in Ireland.
Exciting the Industry of Mankind falsifies the view that Berkeley has nothing to tell us about our present and future social and economic life. For the `idealism' Berkeley found in the money form is now becoming a fact of global economic life, when `xenomoney' and `virtual money' exchanges begin to dwarf commodity transactions, and the future becomes the dominant temporal dimension of economic activity.
Philosophers, historians, cultural theorists, economists and lovers of Irish history will be interested in this volume.

5 out of 5 stars Mysteries of Telecommunication Revealed.......2000-10-15

Those for whom the "acronym"ous world of telecommunications is foreign territory will find Karen Patten's book invaluable. As a novice in the study of telecommunications I found her definitions and explanations to be thorough yet clear and easily understood. This is a high achievement given the technical complexities of the industry and the ongoing confusion which has plagued the industry since its deregulation in 1996. Her chapter on the changes in the telecommunication industry should be required reading for every consumer who struggles to decipher the myriad charges which appear on their monthly telephone bill!

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Mostly helpful, often repetitve, sometimes vague.......1998-12-03

While the book is definitely helpful in learning ACT, it sometimes vaguely introduces topics and fails to adequately explain them. It also often discusses the same topic in 3 or 4 different chapters.

2 out of 5 stars A terrible book, strangely unhelpful and oddly organized........1998-11-23

As long time computer user with extensive experience with dBase, I was chagrined and frustrated with my attempts to learn Act!4 quickly with the help of this book. The author seemed to persistently overstate and elaborate on the obvious, while offering minimum assistance in the more opaque areas. Invariably, what I most wanted to know as a new user was either unavailble or relegated to a chapter nearer the book's index than its beginning. The author, annoyingly, saw fit to repeatedly suggest securing professional help in various areas...and even (and I suspect, self-servingly) cited names of pros who the reader could hire. As a teaching tool, this book is a total bust..unless I'm just not enough of a "dummy" to appreciate it. It's my first and certainly last book of the Dummy series.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book, well research.......1998-08-24

Jeffrey Mayer has collected the tips of some of the best minds in the ACT! world and compiled tips, tricks and suggestions in this volume.

In addition, real world examples of time management and sales techniques using ACT! are clearly stated.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for the ACT! user community.......1998-08-24

ACT! for Dummies is a resource where just one or two tips in this book can help you increase your productivity. Jeffrey Mayer has provided a resource on how to really customize ACT! for your business and help you make more money.

This book is unlike most computer books in that it incorporates many tips on time management and productivity. An example is "Using a telephone headset to improve productivity".

By the end of the book, you will have mastered design, advanced lookups, template creation, scheduling, report generation and using ACT! with the internet. I highly recommend this book.

The best part is that it is easy to understand and has tips for users at all levels.

An excellent book that covers all the financial bases for personal finances. Great for anyone, from college to retired, single or married. This single book cuts through all the confusion and gives clear, to the point advice on selecting stocks, building IRAs, taxes, insurance, health care, etc.

My only concern is that the book was written in 1996 and some of the information could be dated. Still, it is good solid fundemental advice. Anyone following the guidelines and sticks to them will achieve the financial independence they are looking for.

          Book Description

This is a lavishly illustrated history of the Oregon-American Lumber Company, during its heyday one of the most important lumber firms in the Pacific Northwest. Operating from 1922 until its closure in 1957, the company provides an illuminating example of the history of lumbering in the region, showing in detail both the opportunities and problems encountered by firms seeking to exploit the area’s rich natural stands of Douglas fir. The story is enhanced by the inclusion of 285 illustrations, most of which are previously unpublished, that depict logging, railroading, and sawmilling activities, and 17 period-specific maps that give the reader a unique perspective on the growth of the company.

The lumbering industry was pivotal to America’s settlement and development, reaching its zenith in the period covered by this book, which shows how Oregon-American’s survival depended on successfully adapting to great changes in market forces and in industry structures, to natural disasters, and to economic crises like the Great Depression. Essential to the company’s objective of supplying lumber to markets in the Midwest farm belt was its relationship with the Great Northern and Northern Pacific Railroads; accordingly, the book provides much information on the railroad networks that made timber extraction possible.

The study is based on fifteen years of archival and on-the-ground research and draws heavily on the extensive collection of Oregon-American records, notably the correspondence files of Judd Greenman, the company president who conceived and executed most of the company’s operating policies. It also includes, as sidebars, engaging oral histories related by employees, which enrich the text and provide a vivid contrast between management and employee viewpoints.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Work.......2003-06-12

The authors have done a magnificent job in thoroughly covering the history, people and the operations of the fabled Oregon-American Lumber Company. Many of us have seen photos of this operation in a few books before, but, until now, we had nothing to describe the operation in any detail.

With "Ain't No More" we finally have the definitve work on this
fascinating logging operation and the railroad that served it. Through maps, records and photos the authors have weaved together how this operation came to life, survived the ravages of several forest fires and finally cut out under the name Long-Bell in 1957.

There is a wealth of unpublished photos that give both the historian and modeler a detailed look at this great example of Northwest logging.

For anyone interested in the highball days of Northwest logging,
"Ain't No More" is a must purchase!

          5 out of 5 stars Oregon-American Lumber Company: Ain't No More.......2003-06-10

Oregon-American Lumber Company: Ain't No More is a great inside look at the business and political workings of one of the West's larger producers of lumber in the glory days of the industry. Unlike many books on the lumber industry the authors were able to draw on a vast collection of managment letters and records as well as the recolections of former emploiees. This allows a look at both sides of such issues as labor relations and cutting practices. In this day and age we tend to forget that the reasion for such companies as Oregon-American existed was to make money for their investors by cutting their timber and selling the lumber cut there from. There were good solid economic reasions for the now discredited practices of the past.

Besides the excelent text this book contains a truly grand collection of photographs covering the entire life of the company. Some are amiture shots of poor quality but their rare subject matter makes up for that. The inclussion of an inventory of the logging equipment used by the company as well as on of their steam locomotives adds much information lacking in most books of this type. It is a great addition to my library.

              Book Description

In this volume the author provides an analysis of the centrally planned, socialist state economies and their common percentage in the Stalinist Plan introduced in the Soviet Union in the late 1920s. Prybyla first explores the "neoclassical" plan in two variants (conservative and liberal), the "radical" plan (Maoplan), and the Yugoslav experiment (neomarket Yugoplan). He then examines specific countries as their governments search for alternative solutions to the economic problems that plague them. His dynamic presentation of the economic models clearly shows the transformation of the original Stalinist model, reveals the obstacles to reform created by the structural problems that exist within these economies, and demonstrates that inherent deficiencies within the systems must, in time, affect growth and balance.

Prybyla notes the apparent unwillingness or inability thus far of the governments of the various Soviet states to apply reform measures. He effectively argues that economic pressures will eventually force increased privatization and marketization to become dominant if these governments are to increase productivity, efficent allocation of resources, and technical innovation.
