The U.S. Army and the Texas Frontier Economy, 1845-1900 (Texas a & M University Military History Series)
Thomas T. Smith Manufacturer: Texas A&M University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0890968829 |
Book Description
The soldier as scout and skirmisher has long captured the public interest but in this first detailed historical examination of the army and the Texas economy historian Thomas T. Smith finds that the more significant role of the soldier on the frontier was as nation-builder and colonizer. Mid-nineteenth century America's largest corporate body, the U.S. Army, and the nation's largest geo-political organization, the State of Texas, shared a symbiotic relationship and a strong military-commercial alliance. In the frontier conflict during the last half of the nineteenth century the Department of Texas was the army's most extensive and most expensive theater of war. The army brought seventy million dollars into Texas and military logistics was a critical factor in the growth of the immature cash-poor economy of early statehood as well as the recovery from the devastation of Civil War inflation. The army was key to the development of steam navigation on the Rio Grande and to the growth of long haul wagon freighting in the state. The fort-satellite village relationship created a dozen Texas towns and cities, while the military roads connecting those forts produced the commercial pathways of the western half of the state. Army engineers gave Texas its first deep water port at Galveston, and army contracts were instrumental in developing other Texas ports. The U.S. Army and the Texas Frontier Economy challenges the myth of rugged Texas pioneer individualism, demonstrating that Army dollars were a cornerstone of the frontier economy and influenced every business market from corn to real estate, more benefiting to the struggling agrarian and merchant middle class than to the large pockets of few affluent players. The army was a good Texan, giving more that it took, playing an important but long under-appreciated role in the rise of the Lone Star State. In addition, the four appendix offer a valuable list of army contracts for wagon and steamboat freighting, and for antebellum forage and beef contractors.

Monetary Policy and Politics: Rules versus Discretion
George Macesich Manufacturer: Praeger Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0275943356 |
Book Description
Macesich's latest book argues that the poor performance of monetary policy can be attributed to the ease with which "money" slips into the political arena to become a singularly important political issue. Discretionary authority facilitates monetary manipulation for political ends, thereby increasing uncertainty and casting doubt on money, the monetary system, and indeed the monetary authority itself. The author traces the evolution of the debate over rules versus discretionary authority and discusses various methods that economists have proposed for constrain the monetary authority. If monetary policy is to be credible and thus successful, the hands of monetary policy makers are better tied than left free. This work by a noted authority on monetary theory and policy will interest economists in academia and the policy-making community.

Stimulated excellent ideas!.......2001-05-01
Some key take aways were the concepts of growing solutions, cooperative game theory(which is validated in Coopetition), communication strategy and new venture probability. I am using the concept of growing solutions via listserves and virtual teams to create a strategy for a deregulated electric utility. In trying to start my own company, I have been stumped on how to get started. The author addresses this problem by using the Hilbert Space/Green Frog concept to get started, which is half the battle in itself. It's been said that the definition of an entrepreneur is a person who brings together resources. This book discusses ways to do this utilizing the Internet.
The book is not without it's drawbacks. The reading tends to get bogged down as you get into the latter half of the book, though the author summarizes everything in the last chapter. Some of the explanations do get academic(Hilbert Space and Game Theory). Finally, better examples and cases would have been nice.
Overall, the ideas sparked by this book was worth the price and the 5 star rating.

Cleaning Up in Your Service Business (Psi Successful Business Library)
Brian W. Appleton , and Carolyn Appleton Manufacturer: PSI Research ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1555715370 |
Book Description
The basic secret to succeeding in almost any business today seems elusive to many entrepreneurs, but it really is no mystery. My father once said to me, 'When it comes to starting a successful business, find a need and fill it.'From Window Washing and Landscaping to Pest Control, Graffiti Removal, Maid Service, and Yacht Cleaning, there is good money to be made in the service industry. And Cleaning Up in Your Service Business is by far the most comprehensive guide to starting, running, and succeeding in a lucrative and personally satisfying service business.
Why start a service business? Because, as the author points out, service businesses can be started with relatively little investment and can provide individuals the opportunity to own a business in tune with their own interests. And, best of all, service businesses are among the fastest growing small businesses in the country.
In addition to sound start-up advice, sample forms, and important contact information, this book goes a step further than any other book of its kind. For each of the 30 separate businesses covered, the author lists detailed pricing recommendations for the service provided. This information is typically kept "secret" by franchisors who charge their franchisees hundreds--sometimes thousands--of dollars to learn what Brian Appleton gives his readers. This alone will make Cleaning Up in Your Service Business the resource book of choice for those thinking about starting their own service company

Who turned on the lights?.......2001-03-15
As I read Brian Appleton's book, "Cleaning Up In Your Service Business" it was as though someone finally turned on the lights. For three and a half years I had sat in the dark, unable to see where my business was heading, and unable to control it.
This book explained what I need to do to make that profit I've been looking for. It is simple to read, and easy to understand. Each section clearly explains the progressive steps needed to run a successful service business. It also provides suggestions for diversifying, and bringing in needed capital during slow seasons.
I recommend this book to anyone looking to get started in the service industry. Or to those of you like me, who have a business that has not been producing the desired results - MONEY. By putting the principles found in "Cleaning Up In Your Service Business" to practice, I have already seen growth in my business, and profit margin.

Not good enough.......2000-06-24
When it arrived from Amazon, my doubts began when I saw that the book was shrink wrapped. This usually means they don't want potential customers actually looking at the content in the bookstore. Also, the back cover prominently displays an internet site for the book. This Web site links you to the authors' professional Web site.
In my opinion this book is an overpriced infomercial for the authors' legal services.
The first one-third of the book is devoted to stating the obvious, that personal financial data is readily available for purchase and that our society is highly litigious. Is there anyone out there who didn't realize this?
Most of the rest of the book is devoted to an overly general discussion of various legal entities for asset protection and privacy such as corporations, family partnerships, limited liability companies, and trusts. For those who are unfamiliar with these issues, the book provides an adequate introduction to the topic. The book is 268 pages in length, but the author squanders page after page on filler, fluff and padding. Obviously, the authors want you to to go on to purchase their legal services.
In my opinion, the authors' enthusiasm for the limited liability company is a bit premature. This is a relatively new legal entity and there is not a large body of case law--especially in the complex and thorny area of asset protection. Also, there is no meaningful discussion of the all important tax implications of the choice of an LLC over that of a S or C corporation.
Despite the title, there is very little useful discussion of privacy preservation devices and there is much more emphasis on asset protection. The authors tend to overstate the protection afforded by privacy trusts and to understate the level of inconvenience that can result from their use--and there is absolutely no discussion of the costs of setting up and maintaining any of the plans they recommend.
I was particularly dismayed by one of their case studies in which they set up a privacy trust to hold title to the modest real estate and financial assets of an elderly client. In such instances, I would tend to advise conveying the residence to the person(s) she intends to bequeath the property to, while retaining a life estate to protect her interests. This would be much less expensive to set up and would have almost no maintenance costs, unlike the privacy trust.
On the plus side, the authors do a good job of warning people about offshore tax evasion schemes and other absurd internet scams.
Also, the authors overstate the benefit of keeping a low financial profile. Asset searches are quite expensive. A potential litigant who believes you have hidden assets may simply file the suit and in discovery (usually via an inexpensive interrogatory) will demand disclosure of all your interests in corporations, trust, etc.) If you perjure yourself and get caught--you're in big trouble. If you are not the big fish he thought you were, the litigant will at least try and pick up some chump change--and even the weakest of cases do have nuisance settlement value. Keeping a low profile is a great idea, but it is no panacea. What the authors call dangerous assets should be protected by some limited liability vehicle, but the choice between a corp. and an LLC is often more driven by tax implications than legal issues. Your first stop should be your accountant, not your lawyer.
While this book has some good points, it unfortunately seems to be intended to generate clients and legal fees for the authors.
I only wish the authors had written the book the title implies--a solid, detailed, practical manual on maximizing personal privacy. I believe there is a good market for such a book. There are already enough mediocre books on asset protection.
