Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Trashing Reality.......2002-02-22

The authors certainly make a big deal about presenting the "little known" FACTS about environmental groups that will supposedly support their premise that these groups are out to "trash the economy." First of all, this requires the premise that there is no financial value to the environment, no financial value to clean air and water. No where in this book do the authors present facts of actual & SUSTAINING damages to the economy resulting from these groups, except for the notorious case of the alar scare and the dolpin tactics used to control huge, out-of-control nets. They lump legitimate tactics with the fringe radical groups, painting all environmentalists with the same brush. They are very righteous about foot-noting their sources, most of who are malcontents, or who have their own hidden adgenda for which another book could be written. The authors continue to malign the groups for being "rich", large , and interconnected - SO WHAT! They operate just like big businesses, as they should. One example of many unsupported contentions is that the Nature Conservancy's buying of three islands off the coast of Virginia robbed the economy of thousands of jobs!! The authors failed to present facts to support that statement! They fail to include the dollars generated by eco-tourism, one of the fastest growing segments of our economy. I guess these guys would like to see bridges to the galapogas islands. What a one-sided rip!

2 out of 5 stars Opinionated.......2001-12-15

It seems the authors of this book are writing by opinion and backing their opinions up with facts they find to make them sound right. I don't argue the fact that some Environmental groups can become overzealous in their cause and forget what their goal is BUT... what about the people like the average farmer who has been practicing conservation efforts from the begining. They till the earth, plant a crop, fertilize the crop with animal bi-products, reap the harvest, feed themselves and the animals, over and over, etc... Most people today have no idea what it takes to grow food for themselves, their families and/or their animals. All most people know is that they go to the store and their is food. Centuries ago, people grew their food and raised their animals and fed themselves. With the newest technology, we all WANT WANT WANT. What do you think all of this WANT does??? It causes the supply and demand curves of general economics to be put into motion. People need these high paying jobs just to live because we have caused the cost of living to rise so far that we cannot survive on the means of a famer, or simple laborer. We've caused this economic destruction ourselves by simple WANT and not NEED. So who do we blame??? Ask the authors and you'll hear what was written in the book, Environmentalists. Heaven forbid we blame ourselves.

Ask a child today where beef comes from. You'll probably hear "the grocery store". It is this false sense of nature and naturalism that "most" environmentalists are striving to help people recognize. People will not open there eyes to see the fact that each of us has an impact on the earth and people who sit back and say go ahead; drive your old clunky cars; drill oil; pollute the air, we won't be around to see the destruction it causes. They choose to live for themselves. The gift from God that we were all born with was free will. What we choose to do with it is determined by the individual. People gather into many groups to consolidate their efforts to use their free will. In almost every type of group, we see the end result of arguments over who is right and who is wrong.

5 out of 5 stars The Painful Truth.......2001-06-26

In "Trashing the Planet", Arnold and Gottlieb pull the curtain back on the current environmental movement. They show that the policies and beliefs of most of the mainstream environmental groups would shock most of the "average" environmentalists. Being Green feels good, but cannot be intellectully supported by the new-luddites of today. Arnold and Gottlieb deliver a well reasoned, logical, expose of the movement.

3 out of 5 stars Trashing "Trashing the Truth".......2001-06-14

I rated this book three stars because I haven't read it yet but wanted to make a few remarks regarding the above review entitled "Trashing the Truth." The review was not helpful to me because its author doesn't address the content of Mr. Arnold's book, preferring instead to resort to the informal logical fallacies ad hominem, circumstantial ad hominem, appeal to emotion, and appeal to force. I won't make a hasty generalization about environmentalists, but I can say that the doomsayers seem to get quite a bit of mileage out of fallacious or shallow arguments and omission of relevant facts which contradict their conclusions. It is unfortunate that intellectual immaturity so often carries the day. Read Julian Simon, for goodness sake!

1 out of 5 stars Trashing the Truth.......2000-10-30

This book is part of an ongoing effort by industry front groups and shills to convince us that what we are seeing with our own eyes is not reality.

The authors assert that the environment is overprotected, but most Americans over age 20 know that the neighborhoods they grew up in, the lakes, rivers and oceans they swam in, and the forests and other wilderness spaces they used to recreate in are in trouble.

Environmental protections laws are rarely enforced, and even when they are enforced, guilty parties are usually given no jail time, and small fines. Wetlands laws are especially ignored, and most land under federal/state supervision is being mismanaged and overexploited by destructive industries and groups.

Even our national parks are plagued by pollution, jet skis, snowmobiles, traffic jams and other unpleasant, destructive activities and conditions.

Our current economy is unsustainable, based on bulldozing, paving, cutting, burning, and raping the earth. Someday soon, when we are alone on this planet with only our domestic animals and livestock as company, when the oceans are dead and the forests chopped down, we will look at books like this and realize we were lied to by greedy, bitter people who served death rather than life.

    Book Description

In principle, money illusion could explain the inertial adjustment of prices after changes of monetary policy. Hence, money illusion could provide an explanation of monetary non-neutrality. However, this explanation has been thoroughly discredited in modern economics. As a consequence, economists have ever since the 1970s searched for alternative explanations for nominal rigidity. These explanations are all based on the assumption of fully rational economic agents, holding rational expectations. This book argues that money illusion has been prematurely dismissed as an explanation of monetary non-neutrality. Methods of experimental economics are used to investigate the real aggregate effects of money illusion. It is shown that money illusion in fact causes (short-run) real income effects if strategic complementarity prevails. Strategic complementarity is an important characteristic of naturally occurring macroeconomies and is a recurrent theme in most models explaining nominal rigidity.

    Book Description

This book traces the development of e-commerce and e-business systems using the new technologies such as web servers, CORBA, HTML, XML, and Java. It specifically looks at challenging applications where major problems in performance and reliability need to be addressed. Using a Òbottom-upÓ approach, this book discusses clients and servers along with distributed development paradigms, before moving on to more specific technologies that are examples of the above concepts. This book also covers advanced topics, such as Internet security, concurrency, agents, and ubiquitous/mobile computing. Business professionals interested in integrating new technologies into their e-business plans and general readers interested in developing e-commerce Web sites and distributed applications using the Internet.

Every thing was done professionally, I am complete satisfied with the service I recieved.

5 out of 5 stars Realistic college text; useful to working professionals.......2002-08-24

This book was written as a college-level text. It also targets IT professionals who need to quickly understand the differences between e-commerce applications and traditional information systems as a secondary audience.

As a college-level text this book is one of the few that will prepare students for the real world. The scope of topics, level of detail, and carefully chosen case studies are impressive because they capture the key knowledge areas and issues that working professionals deal with.

As a refresher for working professionals who need to understand the big picture and intermediate details associated with e-commerce applications this book's wide coverage of topics makes it ideal. While students will need to work through the entire book, an IT professional can choose the topic areas selectively. For example, the chapter on E-commerce applications that covers supply chain management, e-tialing and auction sites will have more appeal to a working professional, while the chapters on programming will probably capture a student's interest.

Additional features that will be of interest to each audience include:

    - Students and Instructors: (1) CD ROM that comes with the book contains exercises, source code, and additional study material, (2) a companion web site that provides 296 PowerPoint slides that augment the course, and (3) links to over 750 web sites that reinforce the lessons.

    - Working professionals: the CD ROM that comes with the book contains the full text of the book, which will allow searching for any topic or keyword. This is an excellent research resource, that is all the more valuable since the book is up-to-date and covers current technologies (Java, relational databases, XML, etc.), as well as important business issues.

            Book Description

Often, it is not the large-scale, costly promotional campaigns that turn a small business into a success story, but the little, imaginative things that cost almost nothing: placing a terrarium with an exotic animal in your store will ensure that neighborhood children force their parents to enter; hanging a mirror in your window case will make people stop and look; using irregular shaped envelopes can turn an otherwise mediocre mail-order campaign into a success. Whether you are a retailer, wholesaler, or an Internet entrepreneur, here you will find ideas that will help you get the most bang for your promotional buck.

            4 out of 5 stars Number 223: Market YOU!.......2001-05-28

This book has some great tips, but when it comes to achieving corporate and community visibility, nothing replaces a *personal* publicity plan. To position your small business, you have to position YOURSELF. It's inexpensive and critical to your success in the marketplace. Bottom line is that people have to know who you are, what you stand for, and why they should do business with you.

5 out of 5 stars The box idea works! ReviewZ-subscribe@onelist.com.......1999-12-17

Let me tell you the box story: I received a strangely-shaped box from RPS. It was tall and looked like 3 or 4 posters could fit inside, rolled-up & standing upright.

I opened it to find something wrapped in plain, brown Kraft paper. (NO -- I didn't order any porno or sleazy stuff! )

Inside were 2 books I had requested from Actium Publishing to review.

The box thing was a suggested promotional idea straight from this book. Right on page 27, Gielgun, suggests that a package in an unusual shape will catch the eye of a customer and make them focus on what it is you're sending them.

He suggests using an ice cream box & enclosing sales materials that might begin, "We just wanted to sweeten your day." You can get white cake & cookie boxes from bakery supply houses. Or gold boxes; that would be attention getting!

How about those Chinese food take-out boxes? They're not expensive.

"A New York based entrepreneur has sent half-envelopes to his potential customers. He cut regular # 10 envelopes in half and sent only one side (glue-sealed at the "open" end) to prospects. The reply rate to these bisected envelopes was 20% to 30% higher as compared with the whole ones." (p. 27)

The box is the reason this book is being reviewed so soon. Once I got it open I just had to start thumbing through the book -- the bright red cover helps, too -- and ideas kept catching my eye.

Next thing I knew, I'd gone though almost 2/3 of the book! From there, writing this review was easy.

I'll never underestimate the power of provocative packaging again.

Broken into 11 chapters, the tips are organized in areas such as:

            => mail order => trade shows & fairs => overseas => wholesale => cold calling => online => & more

When I say tips, don't think I mean 1 or 2 line descriptions. Each idea takes an entire page & many augment the main idea by providing multiple related suggestions.

The best way to show how the book works is to give some abridged examples.

IDEA --New Broom Sweeps Clean (p. 15)

"If your prospects are corporations, and if you want to get on their receptive side, contact the new, rather than long-time employees. Employees who have been with a company for many years tend to stick to work routines and practices which have proven to work for them, and are not very receptive to new ideas."

            IDEA -- Find Yourself a Moniker (p. 28)

"For prospects & customers to remember you, the name of your business may not be enough. Develop a professional handle that would convey in a catchphrase the essence of your business. " Example: 'The Tune-Up Maestro' for a car repair shop.

This works because I can't forget a course (the Clinical Action Guide) I bought from Drew Eric Whitman, DRS -- 'Direct Response Surgeon'Ô. He even went so far as to have his sales materials carry a picture of him in surgical scrubs, masked, & holding a scalpel.

IDEA -- Make Your Competitors' Advertising Budget Work for You (p. 94)

Here's a simple way to take customers away from your competitors: accept their coupons, and make it known that consumers will get from you the same discounts or incentives your competitors offer in their ads."

            IDEA -- First Year Club (p. 102)

As the owner of a business start-up, your first, most pressing goal is the creation of a solid customer base. One way to create repeat customers from the very start is by offering new customers a 5% discount for life on all your products and services."

IDEA -- Business That Close Down No Longer Need Their Telephone Numbers (p. 114)

This is a little know fact, it seems, or how else can we explain the millions of good phone numbers that go to an early grave together with their owners every year? A business telephone number almost always has some life left in it." If a rival business goes down the tubes, get that number as your own.

I don't want to give away too much here because Gielgun deserves that his book be purchased. Just let it be clear, these ideas & all the others are more detailed than I've written here.

The reason I say this book's level is beginner/intermediate is it's almost 50-50, for me at least, between ideas I've come across before & those totally new to me. The low price makes it affordable to the more experienced marketer.

But, if you're a very savvy marketing maven, this book is probably too elementary for you.

As with all things Internet related, there's nothing new in the 'Online' chapter of the book. It's useful only for the newbie.

            5 out of 5 stars VERY HELPFUL.......1999-11-30

Not every idea in this book is right for everyone, but you'll always find several dozen ideas that'll work for you, and each one of these alone makes purchasing this book a worthwhile investment. Some of the suggestions in this book are so simple and make so much sense it made me wonder how come I never thought of them myself -- there are opportunities around us that we simply don't see until someone points them out to us.

Not just a job hunt book or personal finance book, this book covers it all, with the wisdom and experience of someone who's recently been there, done that and lived to tell about it. For every college graduate this witty, smart, comprehensive survival guide makes sense out of the confusion called the Real World. You've finally graduated from college, and you've vowed never to look at another Scantron form again. You're ready . . . but for what? Suddenly, all your relatives are asking what you're doing with the rest of your life, you don't have health insurance or a clue about how to get it, you can't make heads or tails out of your income tax form, and you're seriously considering going on the all-hot dog diet to save money. Help! Who knew real life was going to be so complicated? Relax. No one said you had to have it all figured out just because someone handed you a diploma. This book gives you the answers you need to get your post-college life on track, from learning what kinds of jobs are out there to getting your first job, from renting an apartment to balancing your budget, from haggling with car dealers to paying back your student loans. Most of all, you'll learn that surviving in the real world isn't nearly as tough as it's cracked up to be. All you need is the right guide.

              4 out of 5 stars Great resource.......2002-08-17

I was quite surprised at how interesting and practical this book was. Many books on personal finance or job finding can be grueling to read and filled with more hype than useful tips. But Stacy Kravetz writes well, and she knows what she's talking about. She also has a pretty healthy perspective on jobs and finding jobs, which can provide hope for the underemployed college grad. If you're looking to organize your life in a sensible way, it's definitely worth skimming through once, but it can be a good reference guide as well.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book for college graduates.......2000-01-07

This book is very well written and organized. I will definately refer back to this book in the future. It had a lot of excellent ideas for the recent college graduate, covering everything from resumes to investing. I really liked how the book was full of basic information that everyone needs to know. It also listed sources where one can find more information though other books and the internet.

5 out of 5 stars What every college graduate needs to know.......1999-08-05

"Welcome to the Real World" is a wonderful resource tool for future graduates. Ms. Kravetz covers every aspect of how to survive in the "real world" after graduation. I do reccommend, however, that you buy this book one semester before graduation. This way you are one step ahead of everyone else. Thank you, Stacy Kravetz!

              Book Description

It takes a certain type to thrive in the cutthroat world of diamond dealing. Author Max Callahan is one who has, and in this book he shares the wisdom of his experience, from equipment requirements to essential industry jargon to what determines a stone's value, plus a revealing look at the cold, hard world of diamond smuggling.

              Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Don't buy this if you are shopping for a diamond.......2003-07-04

This book is an interesting read and it provides a lot of background industry information and makes veiled allussions to diamond smuggling and diamond trafficking and maybe this book would be helpful to someone who is buying rough diamonds on the black market in Zaire (I doubt that anyone doing this would need the tidbits of wisdom that this book has to offer, it all seems like pretty basic stuff), but if you are looking for a diamond for that special someone, this book is of almost no use to you.

I bought this book thinking that it might contain a few tips on how I could buy diamonds at the insider price or maybe a few helpful hints on how to get a better deal or what sort of scams to look out for. I was wrong. Like I said -- an interesting read but ultimately not very useful.
