    Book Description

Over the past two decades, the ethnography of Africa has turned from a preoccupation with system and structure to an overriding concern for process and history. In making this move, the challange has been to integrate and go beyond -- rather than simply reject -- past structuralist insights. This book is one of the most successful examples in the Africanist literature of placing structures in time. It presents a detailed description of the politics of production in Maale during 1975 against a completed past of Imperial Ethiopian history and an uncertain future of revolutionary socialism.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very well written.......2004-06-21

I am not a professional web developer, I am a novice. I am an engineer by degree and profession. I have looked at many references for web development and have found this to be one of the easiest to read and use. Most web programming references have left me confused. Not this one.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible for the beginner!.......2002-09-24

Look, I have a BS in Computer Science. I see so many manuals that it would make your head swim. This book ranks up with the worst of the worst. It is a reference, NOT a guide. If you already know Miva, great, buy the book. If you are just beginning, keep searching because this book does nothing, absolutely ZIP in helping you create, maintain an ecommerce website.

4 out of 5 stars This one gets a lot of use........2000-10-09

If you're customizing Miva Merchant or developing other Mivascripts, you'll find this book essential. The writing is clear, thetext is well-indexed and full of examples. My only complaint is thatmany of the examples are simplified - perhaps to help us all getstarted...

3 out of 5 stars Almost the same as the Manual.......2000-08-14

The book was complete complete and I did not see any mistakes but it was mainly just a nicer printed version of the manual. There were some scripts and explanaitions but not much. If you want a bound and printed reference it is good, otherwise I would just use the only manual and example code from the shopping cart or a miva programming site.

3 out of 5 stars The only book out there.......2000-06-23

I was thankful to find a Miva script resource in print. However, as I am interested in the security aspects of the language, I had hoped to read more in depth about macros. This book is a better desktop language reference than real world application development learn-by-example concept guide. This book is a quick read, will help you get your head around the basics of Miva scripting, but be aware of the author's free use of macros in script examples.

        Book Description

As most instructors, presenters and trainers have discovered, cartoons are an excellent classroom resource for making key learning points in an enjoyable, engaging manner.

Cartoons function well as metaphors for the subject at hand, help introduce or wrap-up key concepts, and serve to ease transitions between learning segments. However, as most users have also discovered, reproduction fees for cartoons in training can be expensive; permissions hard to obtain; and copyright holders difficult to track down.

This book provides the solution. Cartoons for Trainers presents over seventy five original cartoons, conceptualized by trainers for trainers. It includes a license that allows buyers to display these cartoons in the classroom.

The cartoons focus on the transition points in any training program. Subjects include objectives, introductions, activities, case studies, role-plays, experiential learning, breaks, evaluations, and closings. For anyone who wants tips or guidance, the author provides a brief and practical introduction.

In addition, the cartoons are reproduced on the included CD-ROM for use in electronic presentations. Purchase of the book constitutes permission for the buyer to reproduce the cartoons for overheads or place them in electronic presentations.

Written by leading offbeat training expert Lenn Millbower, author of Training With A Beat: The Teaching Power of Music, and the composer of Do You Want to Learn With Music: Game Show Themes for Trainers, and drawn by New York show director Doris Yager, these cartoons exhibit a tongue-in-cheek wit reminiscent of Gary Larson's "The Far Side" and Scott Adams' Dilbert. All the cartoons make good-natured fun of the everyday foibles trainers experience, while addressing the fears that learners have toward training.

This is an ideal trainer's companion and deserves a place in any trainer's toolbox.

        Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Cartoons for Trainers.......2003-07-15

I was disappointed in the quality of this book. The cartoons are amateurish and not all that amusing. The topics in which the cartoons are divided fall into only two categories: "Classroom Life" and "Training Topics". The concept of being able to download cartoons into your own presentation is great, but the applicability of what is contained in this book is very narrow. I doubt I will find much use for this book.

A fair amount of this book could be determined by you through a focused web search. The lists of websites provided in the book is nice, but active searching can be more effective. While it can be argued that the author is offering his expertise as a filter of what is available on the web, you may learn more by conducting your own study.

However, if you are pressed for time, and need a synopsis of what types of computer jobs you might be interested in, then the book might prove useful.

3 out of 5 stars Great for entry level jobs - NOT for management positions.......2007-10-03

This book seems particularly well suited for applicants in the service and hospitality industry, sales, trades, and entry-level corporate positions.

However, I would NOT recommend this book as a resource for people seeking corporate jobs at above entry level. Though this book offers several examples of resumes for middle and senior level management, they are, to be kind, amateur at best.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Book on Resumes-Practical and Helpful.......2003-02-16

This book describes how to write resumes and recommends an initial sample one so that writing the resume does not delay the job hunt. The 381 resumes are written by members of the Professional Association of Resume Writers and are organized by the job categories of the Occupational Outlook Handbook of the Department of Labor. It may be the first resume book to cover almost every job in the country. Includes commentary about good and bad points of paticular resumes. The book also describes JIST cards (TM) cover letters, and other examples of job search correspondence. 5 out of 5 stars The Christian's Handbook to Eastern Religion.......2001-08-09

The purpose of life is to seek and experience God and the book is about the search towards this experience. Individual effort as well as grace are both necessary for spiritual progress. Many of the writings in the book at first reading seem obscure and fragmented. Some of what at first sight seems obscure will be clarified if the reader becomes aware of its esoteric meaning. The obscurity and fragmentation is certainly, in part at least, intentional; the reader is being asked to look at some problem in an unfamiliar way, so that we are teased or goaded, rather than logically let into understanding. The paradoxical obscurities, fragmentations, prose, poetry, quotations, parables and wisdom tales are all there because the underlying message is genuinely inexpressible. They are there to 'allure' the mind in order to manifest the truth to you by the power of the Holy Ghost. And by the power of the Holy Ghost you may know the truth that exists outside of the human condition.

This book is not about how to get a better job, invest wisely, or how to become ludicrously wealthy by making a killing on the market. Instead, it is about money in the larger sense -- the social impact it has on each of our lives, and on the world as a whole.
