Good Introductory Text on Economics.......2006-04-19

I used this book on the economics subject during my university days. It enabled me to read the subject from an introductory level and to delve into a more in depth study of this fascinating science.

The book provides a comprehensive coverage of economics for first year undergraduate students. It provides an excellent foundation for those who wish to specialize in the subject.

The book has been kept up-to-date with current developments in the field to include risk analysis and assessment, decision making under uncertainty and incomplete information and has several informative examples that reinforce the student's grasp of the subject.

I read Working Woman's Arst of War in 2 days, between my schooling and work. I couldn't put it down. It is right on, truthful tactics, to receive personal success for the women of the 21st century, and for the future. A classic to read and pass on to daughter generations. It deals with subjects such as jealousy, sexuality and harassment, men and other subjects and twists them around to a positive point of view in dealing with such areas of the workplace. This book teaches women how to be winners, and understand that they have just as much potential, if not way more in today's society, for becoming a leader of the home or business venture. Chin-Ning Chu, the author, also brings in a positive point of view on anything today's society likes to use as an excuse for not winning. She has found the real essence.

Ben Forta's earlier Allaire-sanctioned books on ColdFusion set a standard for technical books about Web-development environments. Once again, he's done a great job, and fans of Allaire's development tools will be pleased.

As the book exposes increasingly complicated aspects of Spectra, it diligently explains what's going on at a high level before presenting the reader with code listings. Both the text and the code help illuminate Spectra, with pieces of code adding to a very feature-rich Web-store application. (All the code, plus trial versions of Spectra and other Allaire products, appear on the companion CD-ROM.) Not bad at all.......2002-08-20

Even though my company decided not to use Spectra we found this book to be fairly helpful in allowing us to determine the softwares good and bad sides.

Doesn't cover spectra 1.5.......2001-09-05

This book didn't meet my expectations. To start, the UI of the webtop in spectra 1.5 has been considerably modified from 1.0 in a number of areas. The book examples often don't match up with the new UI. Second, the book seems to be cobbled together without much cohesion. Trying to create the sample app has become a contest to see if you can figure out what they want you to do. Since there aren't a whole lot of books out there on spectra, this may be your only recourse but don't expect too much.

An Unexpected Let Down.......2001-08-15

I am a good Cold Fusion developer today because Ben Forta wrote a couple of amazing CF books. Thanks to those two books, I was generating a very admirable income writing CF sites within weeks of buying them. So my question is this: how can this book be so bad? The book seems thrown together and unfocused. I won't even get into the errors. Do yourself a favor, read the manuals that ship with Spectra. You'll get a lot more out of them than this book.

Informative, but w/ errors.......2000-12-30

This book was definately needed in the world of Spectra. I think that it was very helpful to the majority of Developers that have read and used the examples.

But, there are quite a few mistakes throughout, and seemed somewhat rushed. I can't wait until the next book comes out!

Good start... where's the rest?.......2000-12-14

This book did not really live up to my expectations. It was a little confusing, I think because of the number of authors involved. If you are looking for an alternative to the documentation that came with spectra then this could do, but I wouldn't expect much more from it. It also did not touch on some of the advanced features that I would like to learn more about. I'm hoping for an advanced spectra book, until then the standard documentation should do just fine.

One thing I do like is the typical ben forta reference in the back. I wish I could get that part seperately in a handy wire bound notebook or something.

"Gem Identification Made Easy" opens up the world of gem identification to the jeweler, hobbyist and the curious. I didn't come away with the impression that gem identification is easy, but that some kinds of identification are easy, inexpensive and FUN! Antoinette Matlins makes it clear that the bar to entry into gemology is low. Practice, diligence, and three small instruments that cost less than $200 will enable you to identify 80% of colored gemstones and their look-alikes as well as diamonds and most of their imitations. Since there are at least 3 different gemstones on the market in every color and no shortage of synthetics and enhancement treatments, the skills within the pages of "Gem Identification Made Easy" are invaluable to anyone shopping for gemstones. If gems fascinate you, this book will help you discover if you would like to pursue gemology as a career or serious hobby.

The bulk of "Gem Identification Made Easy" are descriptions of the instruments involved in gem identification, detailed instructions on how to use each, and what they can show you, including many charts which will help you identify stones. The 3 essential instruments that everyone will need are: loupe, Chelsea filter, and dichroscope. The loupe magnifies the stones, revealing inclusions, blemishes, and fillers. The Chelsea filter differentiates between some gems and synthetics. The dichroscope distinguishes single-refracting stones from double-refracting and allows identification of stones by the colors they exhibit. In addition, Ms. Matlins provides instructions for additional tools that one would need to set up a lab: UV lamp, refractometer, microscope. Less essential: spectroscope, polariscope, and immersion cell. For diamonds: SSEF diamond-type spotter and electronic diamond tester. These could cost nearly $3000, but shopping on eBay will bring the price tag down.

The author also dedicates a chapter to "Antique and Estate Jewelry", in which she discusses imitation and alteration techniques frequently found in antique and period jewelry. She advises on how to detect them and includes tables of synthetics and imitations, when they appeared on the market, and characteristics that will help identify them. This is followed by many useful Appendices: a list of gems and look-alikes by color, gem hardness, specific gravities, refractive index tables, tables of dispersion and birefringence, glossary of terms, list of organizations offering gemology workshops or training, equipment suppliers. These are in addition to the many tables and lists in the instrument chapters. Color photos are limited to a center insert, where there are photos of gemstone inclusions and a few other identifying features. "Gem Identification Made Easy" is an easy to understand, practical entry to the fascinating world of gemstones.

Love it so much. A lot of information. This book will teach you how to setup a lab and making identificaiton of the gemstone without attending the gemology school - with very very reasonable price.

The book was good for a primer on gem tools and iidentification but lacked the detail I was seeking. It is an very good book for the beginner for it covers a lot of subjects about gem and the various tools used to identify them. I was seeking more exact detail and this book did not have it.

A friend in need.......2007-10-07

I highly recommend this book. I've had a lifetime of "working on my weight" and I'd started to lose the "battle" recently. I bought "Body Confident" and it has been like a cherished and wise friend. I love the daily checking in and the quotations and Ms. Moran has wonderful suggestions for writing that can be done should one wish to.

While I have been slowly and steadily losing the weight, I've been gaining much insight into my relationship with eating. This is a very powerful, helpful, non-judgmental and inspirational book. Thank you, Ms. Moran!

Through most of its history, the Boeing Company has been one of the biggest providers of jobs and wealth in western Washington State. But in the 1990s, the company found itself a target of local activists and politicians who saw urban sprawl and "growth politics" ruining the region's quality of life.

T. M. Sell grew up in a Boeing family, near Boeing's Renton plant, and later covered the company as a reporter for the Valley Daily News and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. He is a first-hand observer of the drama he unfolds--one personally interested in the future of his community, well informed about the details of its history, acquainted with many of the principal players, and conversant with the theoretical and historical literature that bears on the multifaceted questions he seeks to answer.

After a lively sketch of the Boeing Company's history into the last decade of the 20th century, Sell looks at what happened when Boeing tried to expand its facilities in Renton and Everett. It was then that the "paradox of growth" first manifested itself, the point at which the benefits of economic expansion appeared to be outweighed by its costs.

Sell examines political power management in Washington State, paying particular attention to Boeing's successful efforts to be a positive influence in the state, to the strategies it used to influence growth-management legislation in Olympia, and to its negotiations with the communities most affected by its efforts to grow. In each case, Sell gives not just an overview of positions and strategies but also sharply drawn portraits of the lobbyists, analysts, and politicians involved, many of whom explain their views in direct conversation.

The balanced and comprehensive approach Sell brings to bear on the story is also his recommendation for dealing with inevitable future growth-related contentions. Fostering the continuing health of our economic and political environment, he concludes, will require just such a broad, evenhanded, and sensible approach to the politics of compromise.

Sell is admittedly an outsider, always studying Boeing from the periphery of a neutral journalist, or family member of one employed there, yet he manages to deftly describe the essence and culture of Boeing as a longtime employee would. He understands and conveys the conservative approach Boeing has always taken toward state governmental affairs, and presents Boeing as above reproach in these matters, a reputation Boeing has gone to great lengths to ensure. I appreciated the detail to which Sell went to explain the legislative aspects of growth in Washington state and Boeing's occasional collisions with it - a good read whether one is interested in the evolution of Boeing from Bill Boeing's hobby shop to the economic powerhouse it is today, or if one is interested in the impact of growth. Sell also slips in delightful, but subtle witticisms.

Facts without Fiction.......2001-06-12

Sell's book cuts through the fog of loyalty to green or greed parties and explains the paradox of growth with facts not fictions. Everyone has something to learn from this book. Sell makes both sides of the growth issue stand naked before the mirror and it isn't always pretty. "Wings of Power" is a well written and thoroughly researched book that, unlike most of this genre, is not devoid of humor.
