A practical guide that makes sense.......2004-09-25
This book is a must for board members and anyone who works with boards. I have never fully understood the mechanics of how organizations raise money beyond grantseeking. This book lays out a number of alternatives and makes all seem doable. I especially appreciated the 'investing in social enterprises' concept of giving versus the more typical begging on bended knee for what are essential critical services to the community. The exercises are clearly explained and the language is straightforward and easy to follow. The underlying concepts go far to removing the mystery and fear of asking for money. The board recruitment grid, the fundraising planning section, working with consultants and the costs and evaluation sections appeal to my structured way of thinking. I can highly recommend this excellent resource.
Help for Pitching Prospects.......2004-06-18
I am not associated with a non-profit, but I am an artist who is constantly looking for funding sources. I found this book
extremely helpful in suggesting ways to overcome my fear of confronting prospects face to face. It is written simply and reiterates the positive message that we need not fear requesting large amounts of money. Like in any sales game, the worst thing that can happen is rejection.
I haven't yet found people who are "thrilled to give", but doing confidence building prep before I try can only boost my chances.

Great Nonprofit Board Resource!.......2004-03-12
I found this book to be a wonderfully straight-forward and user-friendly guide which can actually motivate a nonprofit board to sucessfully fundraise. I think it does a great job of insightfully recognizing the reluctance fundraisers have in asking for money. The authors answer this situation with, what are to me, practical and surprisingly simple ways in which to restore fundraisers' confidence (and enthusiasm!). I definately recommend it!

If you need this book, you know you need it. It contains a daily history of the Dow Jones Averages (Industrials, Transports/Rails, Utilities and Bonds (early is 40 bond, later is 20 bond). Of particular value is the very early history of the initial Dow Averages (pre-modern era). The list of component stocks, and dates of changes is also very useful. Watching them pull the moribund typewriter/adding machine company, International Business Machines, from the DJIA, and then re-insert it (after it was a behemoth, on the verge of playing dinosaur to the DEC minicomputers) is great reading.
There are several introductory articles included that are why I only rate it at 4 stars. Those articles aren't worth the time to read.
A few words of caution: While this is a great resource for those wanting to check on data, it is not perfect. First, it does not contain the Dow Jones 65 Stock Composite Average. It also does not contain the history of the divisors. Many of the pages are copies of pages from earlier editions. That means that it is not unusual to find digits that are only partially readable. Finally, the book does contain errors. A simple check of whether the close is between the high and the low will find quite a few.
As I type, it is almost the end of 2001, and the 1885-2000 update has not yet been published. That is late, and is a concern.

From the author: We examine the evolution of marginal federal income tax rates from 1980 to 1995 using panel and cross-sectional data. Marginal rates fell dramatically for most taxpayers. Whereas in 1980 three-quarters of taxpayers faced statutory tax rates above 15 percent, less than one-quarter of taxpayers were in that situation in 1995. Individuals' tax rates also rose and fell due to life-cycle changes in income. Young people (age 30 to 44) were twice as likely to experience tax rate increases as older taxpayers. Nonetheless, the majority of taxpayers in every age group experienced rate reductions. The large marginal tax rate cuts in 1981 and 1986 clearly dominate life-cycle effects.
