Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars revealing and decent.......2006-08-16

Author Gu is a brave fellow. He offers straightfoward info and analysis on what is really inside Chinese business and political world. He is highly critical of the Communist ills that continue to cause hellish problems for China and foreign operations inside. Other than this abusive bureaucratic power, Chinese people are very diligent and creative. But the key is to get rid of the overextended bureaucratic power, as so claims by Gu.

This book is a must read -- it is a rare book that reveals the inner workings of the Chinese bureaucratic system. This new edition is very nice, which is sharply revised and expanded. (Five stars for his new edition)

5 out of 5 stars powerful development lessons .......2006-08-03

Author George Zhibin Gu is a high-profile Chinese journalist whose powerful newspaper pieces are widely read. This book is a must read. The reason for my recommendation is simple: This book summarises the key lessons from a fast-changing China under globalization and capitalism.

These lessons are powerful. First, an open society is a must in order to gain true development. Second, having foreign involvement is a key driving force for China's quick development in this era. Third, a truly meaningful development must depend on individual private initiatives other than government bureaucracy.

This book gives rather straightforward analysis on what is behind China's new development. It gives tremendous information on foreign multinationals and investors doing biz inside. Furthermore, it gives huge info on how this foreign involvement affects China's society, government and economy. In particular, it is extremely open about the ills of the Chinese bureaucracy. To overcome bureaucratic barriers, it emphasizes the need for greater private initiative as well as openness, among other things.

Also, the book talks about the ever-increasing influences of China's surge on global development. It gives very insightful analysis on a changing global production, investment, and trade map, as well as manufacturing and job transfers, among other issues.

The book also offers much practical advice on doing biz in China. Numerous case studies are presented, including both successes and failures.

5 out of 5 stars must read.......2006-07-29

This book is for all readers. Not to mention other things, it contains several dozen case studies on global multinationals doing business in China, like Wal-Mart, P&G, Intel, HSBC, Bank of America, Ford, Siemens, BP, Unilever, Sony, GE, GM, Morgan Stanley, and Microsoft. (Amazingly, this revised and updated volume gives most current info on China -- even events happened in May 2006 are contained here.)

It also gives huge info on emerging Chinese multinationals. All the leading Chinese companies such as Haier, Huawei, TCL, Lenovo, China Telecom, Baosteel, China Oil, Sinopec, CNOOC, and Ping An are studied here. Furthermore, comparisons are made between the Chinese companies and their international counterparts. These discussions are straightforward, covering both strengths and weaknesses.

Its scope is rather wide: the author aims to identify key factors behind global development: causes, effects, and consequences. He offers vast info and analysis on a changing global production, investment and trade map, which involves all nations, rich or poor. Interesting comparative studies involve US, Canada, Europe, India, Japan and China. Above all, he pinpoints opportunities and challenges under globalization.

Also it is highly critical of the abusive Chinese bureaucratic power. Gu claims that China's fundamental weakness is with this overextended, self-appointed bureaucratic power. Vast info and facts are presented to support his statement.

He is a high-profile newspaper commentator/consultant that adds much color to his discussions. The book's key strengths come from the fact that the author has vast first-hand experiences, so that he gives countless insider's stories. Its style and presentation is very reader friendly and straightforward, but its analysis is overpowering.

        Book Description

Business, Government, and Society: The Global Political Economy shows how lobbying, legal action, subsidies, and many other government economic activities work in the United States and, to a lesser degree, in other political systems. It is not a handbook with directions about how to set up a political action committee, bring a lawsuit, or apply for a government subsidy. More fittingly, it aims to inform readers about the reasons firms turn to government as part of the struggle for competitive advantage and how that interplay can affect a company?s welfare, and the welfare of society.

                Book Description

Winner of the 2002 Berkshire Prize, presented by the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians

Fabricating Women examines the social institution of the seamstresses’ guild in France from the time of Louis XIV to the Revolution. In contrast with previous scholarship on women and gender in the early modern period, Clare Haru Crowston asserts that the rise of the absolute state, with its centralizing and unifying tendencies, could actually increase women’s economic, social, and legal opportunities and allow them to thrive in corporate organizations such as the guild. Yet Crowston also reveals paradoxical consequences of the guild’s success, such as how its growing membership and visibility ultimately fostered an essentialized femininity that was tied to fashion and appearances.
Situating the seamstresses’ guild as both an economic and political institution, Crowston explores in particular its relationship with the all-male tailors’ guild, which had dominated the clothing fabrication trade in France until women challenged this monopoly during the seventeenth century. Combining archival evidence with visual images, technical literature, philosophical treatises, and fashion journals, she also investigates the techniques the seamstresses used to make and sell clothing, how the garments reflected and shaped modern conceptions of femininity, and guild officials’ interactions with royal and municipal authorities. Finally, by offering a revealing portrait of these women’s private lives—explaining, for instance, how many seamstresses went beyond traditional female boundaries by choosing to remain single and establish their own households—Crowston challenges existing ideas about women’s work and family in early modern Europe.
Although clothing lay at the heart of French economic production, social distinction, and cultural identity, Fabricating Women is the first book to investigate this immense and archetypal female guild in depth. It will be welcomed by students and scholars of French and European history, women’s and labor history, fashion and technology, and early modern political economy.

                  5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2003-06-13

Clear, easy examples, plenty of walk-throughs. There are a few errors, but the book also points out errors on other sources. The author was very responsive through e-mail and directed me to some updates that cleared up the errors. I'm very happy with this book.

If you use Application Center buy this book. Far better than what passes for a manual from Microsoft and even better than the Microsoft class.

5 out of 5 stars Application Center 2000 Must Have!.......2002-03-02

When I was told by management to learn Application Center 2000 in a hurry for an upcoming project, my first step was to look for a book on the subject. Application Center 2000 is very new and Microsoft has little documentation to support it. Worse yet, the Resouce Kit is filled with errors. The first book I purchased was very technical and hard to understand. I then purchased Microsoft Application Center 2000 Configuration and Administration by Don Jones. It was different. The book is written in a style that I have found very helpful as I try to learn and deploy this new product. We will be putting Application Center 2000 in production by the end of March and this book made it happen. Thanks!

                          Book Description

Most people would love to have 20/20 hindsight on their careers. In Smart Moves for Liberal Arts Grads, college career experts Sheila Curran and Suzanne Greenwald have assembled the next best thing: the collective wisdom of a diverse and inspiring cast of success stories—twenty-three liberal arts graduates who have gone on to all manner of fascinating and satisfying professions. The authors have combined lessons from the stories with their own hands-on experience with thousands of students and graduates to outline a framework for finding a perfect career.

What makes Smart Moves different is that it provides essential career advice while being fun to read. Readers will be struck by the frankness of the biographies of real graduates whose careers have taken twists and turns. Todd turned his passion into a living as the founder and CEO of several small businesses and a professional cellist; Thad's path took him from English major to a dream job in the front office of a major league baseball team; and a subway ride helped Sharon speed her intended career leap from a luxury department store to journalism. What binds them together is that they have all made smart moves on the way to career success—both during their liberal arts education and in the real world.

Smart Moves not only champions the value of a liberal arts education, it also embraces the complexity of careers, and the notion that many different factors contribute to success: education, experience, attitude, personal characteristics, and a good dose of luck. Smart Moves is an inspiration to all those who are seeking proven strategies to follow their passion—no matter what their age.

The quarter million liberal arts students who receive diplomas each year will truly benefit from the insights of Smart Moves. But this book is equally helpful for high school students (and their guidance counselors) looking at colleges, for graduates still looking for their life's work, and for parents who want to understand career realities for their children.

An innovative career guide for our stressful, fast-paced world, Smart Moves for Liberal Arts Grads illuminates valuable career lessons with sharp advice and an unparalleled framework for success.

5 out of 5 stars The Whole Family Loved It.......2007-10-01

As a sophomore in college, I'm almost to the point of entering the "real world." But instead of feeling unprepared and anxious about this process, I am actually looking forward to it. This is entirely due to Smart Moves, and I cannot even begin to emphasize how much this book has already helped me - even though I'm still 2 1/2 years from graduation!
What really makes this book a pleasure to read is it's format. At the beginning are extraordinarly helpful pieces of advice on what to do in and once you graduate from college. Next, the book goes on to provide real-world examples of people who are enjoying their careers in just about every major field. Smart Moves chronicles their stories while not only including their successes, but their mistakes as well.
At home, my mom and my 17 year old brother looked through the book while it was laying down on the coffee table. They both loved it. Here is what my mom had to say:

"Your purpose in life is not to find yourself...it is to create yourself."
My son, a student at Duke University, received this book from the University the summer between his freshman and sophomore years. He asked me to read it, and I was delighted to find it offered, through biographical examples, some truisms that we had been trying to explain to him.

                          1. Follow your passion; your happiness and enthusiasm will attract the money you need to survive.
                          2. Be willing to work hard.
                          3. It doesn't always matter what you major in, there is a good chance you will change careers several times in your life.
                          4. Every job you have will teach you something about yourself and give you the experience to make yourself available for the next opportunity.
                          5. Remain open and flexible.
                          6. Remain curious and research-oriented.
                          7. Use your summers between school years to take internships or volunteer in the areas of your interest.
                          8. Explore the career counseling center early during your undergraduate years.

I felt the lively and entertaining writing style of the authors, Sheila Curran and Suzanne Greenwald, made this book a fun and informative read for both undergraduate students and their families.

Once again, I'd recommend Smart Moves to anyone who has an open mind!

5 out of 5 stars A necessary read for every liberal arts grad..........2007-09-11

A refreshing and timely read for every recent college graduate. Curran helps job-seekers (and their parents!) understand the challenges - sychological, cultural & socio-economic - facing every graduating liberal arts major. Her years of experience counseling the best and brightest of the country's youth has taught her a simple truth - happiness is in doing what you love to do.

What's so fascinating is the complete relevance it has to the day-to-day decisions that my 22-30 year-old peers are making every day. I can't tell you how many times I have felt compelled to share the "Smartest Moves" chapter with colleagues who find themselves "disenchanted,"
"disengaged," or otherwise, with their current career path.

Every college graduate should read this book - and so should their parents.

5 out of 5 stars Truly an eye-opener.......2007-09-04

A college sophomore at Duke University, NC, I received a copy of 'Smart Moves' over the summer, at a time when I was extremely confused over which major I should choose, which career path I should follow etc. That was, until I received this book.
Through the stories of 23 other students, all ranging in a wide variety of careers and fields, I have realized that the next 3 years of my life will be about finding out what my passions are and where my interests for the future lie, rather than about working my way towards a preordained career goal on a predetermined path which I might regret later on in life. Several of my course selections and internship plans are now being reinforced after reading this book.
Smart moves has been a really useful eye-opener and myth buster for me, and I highly recommended to all students in liberal arts colleges, regardless of whether they were in a similar position as I was in or not. Read this book, and you would have made your first of many smart moves.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for parents and students.......2007-03-29

Smart Moves provides intersting and useful advice for students as they seek to make the most out of their college experience and determine the right post-college pursuit. The book emphasizes its applicability to both parents and students by having two forewards, one written for each group.

5 out of 5 stars Required Reading For My Students.......2007-03-16

Smart Moves is a fantastic resource, which I recommend to all my students, especially to the ones who approach me bewildered and anxious about internship, job, career, life mission issues. I worry about the official and unofficial messages they are receiving from a variety of sources inside and outside the university (e.g., advisors, peers, parents, recruiters, employers).

I frequently lend out my two copies of Smart Moves, and believe it should be required reading for any student seriously considering career issues.

                          Thanks for writing it!

So I read Dorsey's newest book "Reality Check...", and it was so helpful and practical and specific, that I got this one, and finished it in one day. It's incredibly useful! Example: we've all heard about having mentors, but most of us don't take it seriously. The way he explains it, I realize how EVERYONE should be recruiting mentors! Right now! Stop reading this review, read Dorsey's book, and get a mentor immediately! The book has tons of other useful things you can start doing immediately, whether you have a job right now or not. And lots of ideas don't cost you a penny. Anyway, do you have a mentor yet? Hurry!

5 out of 5 stars Just What Gen Y's Need - A Practical HowTo Book.......2007-05-18

I liked this book. A friend of mine recommended I give it to the teens I mentor who are trying to find their first real job. As an entrepreneur who has started three successful companies, I've seen lots of resumes and lots of teens asking for jobs, but most simply don't have the right skills or approach to get the job they want. As a sad case-in-point, (before I had this book to recommend) I had recommended one of my friend's kids apply for a job at one of my business contact's companies. My business contact interviewed the young man and then called me back to suggest that I teach the kid basic interview skills! That was certainly a wake up call for me and the reality that many teens are simply not prepared to land an internship or job--which is what this book explains in a language Gen Y seems to understand and can easily act on.

Mr. Dorsey's book covers the basic skills that in my view are essential for success in the workplace (my favorite is his diagram on how tie a tie) and then goes further with practical advice on how to get a mentor, network your way to people with big titles, and not give up when you hear your first inevitable "no." Many of us over 25 might take the things in this book for granted, but for many Gen Y's this book provides a rare source of practical information which they many times are too shy to ask about.

Sometimes it is hard for us Gen X and Baby Boomers to recognize that the basic skills and ideas Mr. Dorsey shares are not common sense, but as my recent experiences have shown, the basics are very much the right place to start when you are looking for your first job.

5 out of 5 stars Great "How To" for young adults.......2007-05-17

A friend read this book as part of a course at her school and recommended it to me (apparently a lot of schools have courses based on this book, as another friend also said he read the book for a course). This book teaches the keys - like getting mentors, building a network, etc -- and ties it all together. I highly recommend this to anyone setting out into the real world and ready for their first job.

                          5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book!!.......2007-05-17

I found this book when I was searching for something to help my teenage sister with her job hunting. As a successful professional, who has founded and run multiple companies, I was very impressed with this book, which I believe is ideal for any teenager or young professional. It is easy to read and does a wonderful job teaching invaluable skills that will help aspiring professionals find mentors, succeed in interviews, and build enduring networks. The book is apparently used as the basis for a course in over 1,500 schools, which is a testament to its ability to connect with the younger generation.

Once you have determined what types of jobs might be for you then you could look at what types of companies might be for you.

This book gives some excellent advice concerning how to get interships, do job shadowing, prepare and get through the interview process, and gives some nice advice on business cards and resumes.

I was once, many years ago, a professional recruiter for General Electric and know what it is to go through a lot of resumes in a day and host three or four applicants in a day. The advice in this book is worth carefully considering.

I find it interesting that the author did not "get a job" but created a job for himself - not something most 18 year olds do. Neither does he have experience in keeping a job in a corporation - something most of us have to do. Nor does he appear to be an expert in helping people "find your focus, Inspiration and Occupation" as the book"s front cover says it will accomplish. There is a lot of difference between being self employed as a motivational speaker and working in a corporation or even working in a small business.

Because this book is used as a textbook in some courses is no reason to buy it.

That said, this book is a good read with some good advice but borrow it before you decide you need to buy it.

The book is detailed with the history of the ranch back as far as the
Devitt family is concerned about which is what I was curious. There was
some owners prior to the Devitt's about which would also have been interesting. The book is well worth reading for those interested in Texas
                            ranch history.
