Book Description
The international diffusion of policy ideas and practices is a subject of growing interest, raising such questions as: Why are there increasingly such waves of policy innovation? What prompts one country to emulate another's changes? Is it the influence of powerful international actors like the World Bank? Is it the motivations and interests of domestic actors? And how freely do imitators adapt foreign models to the needs and characteristics of their own countries, rather than simply replicating them?
Essays by leading academic experts and by policy practitioners with academic background address these important questions in Learning from Foreign Models in Latin American Policy Reform. Two chapters examine the influence of the international financial institutions. Then experts from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico discuss how foreign models influenced their own decision making in crucial areas of social policy such as pensions, unemployment insurance, and health care.
These case studies yield an unprecedented insider perspective on policy diffusion, in particular showing that the financial institutions have less clout than sometimes appears. They also show the crucial role played by policy specialists inside the public bureaucracy.
Contributors: David Bravo, Sarah M. Brooks, Elena Carrera, José Paulo Zeetano Chahad, Carlos Cruz, Gustavo Demarco, Louise Haagh, Joan M. Nelson, Vinícius C. Pinheiro, and Juan Pablo Uribe.

Book Description
This book presents the detailed life stories of nine women academics in business faculties throughout North America. Three are in their early careers, three are facing tenure, and three are recognized leaders in their field. Each of the authors presents her story as a set of choices and reveals the alternatives and the decision making process. Many choices are a trade-off between different roles; teacher versus researcher, wife/mother versus professional, researcher versus administrator. Insights are developed and shared with the reader. The women academics in this book represent a wide variety of disciplines, ages, ethnicity, and family makeup. Their paths and insights are different, but their choices are similar, and recurring themes emerge. These are explored by the editors as they tie the stories together and interpret the individual tales. Through reading this book, graduate students and professors alike can get a glimpse into other's struggles and triumphs. They should emerge with specific strategies and a clear idea of the choices that lie ahead. Laypeople who always wondered what academics did with all their free time will get a glimpse into the diversity of responsibilities and opportunities that this profession entails.

Many people would love to pick the brains of a venture capitalist to uncover exactly what gets their juices (and checks) flowing. Some books promise such advice from the recipient's point of view, but rarely is the story told from a financier's. As its title promises, however, Confessions of a Venture Capitalist does just that. Ruthann Quindlen, a one-time investment banker now with Silicon Valley's Institutional Venture Partners, lays it on the line in this revealing glimpse inside her world. Short, humorous chapters make it an easy read--a fact that might lead some to suspect that specifics are lacking. But details are there, as evidenced in a section called "Less Is More, or Subtraction by Addition." "Rather than coming to us with just themselves and their bright idea, they believe we want to see business types as part of the initial management team," she writes. "Often, we like the technology entrepreneur and the plan, but end up in the awkward position of not being able to back the business types.... Focus instead on your idea and why customers will love it and how you and only you can make it happen." Such suggestions should prove useful to entrepreneurs, and anyone else interested in today's venture-capital economy. --Howard Rothman

From the woman who took Microsoft public comes a groundbreaking book that reveals the hidden world of high stakes venture capital deals and shows entrepreneurs how to turn great ideas into mega-profitable businesses.
Customer Reviews:
Lacks concrete facts.......2007-09-30
The introduction lists the two goals: The first is "to help entrepreneurs bypass some of the common mistakes that I have observed when they start and build a company.... The second to help mainstream America understand more about the venture capital economy - and the magic that is Silicon Valley."
This book fails to provide value to an entrepreneur. Quindlen provides a sparse collection of common mistakes that any 18 year old should already have heard. She describes a number of investment scenarios to show common mistakes made by founders but provides such little detail that no useful knowledge comes through. The book strongly lacks concrete facts and is devoid of analysis. This leaves an overall (and incorrect) impression that VC don't actually know how to quantify anything but instead use only their emotions in decision making. Quindlen fails to show the value added from VC firms which is a real disappointment since she is from one.
Quindlen does make some head-way with her second goal of helping mainstream America. The lack of facts in the book may make it an easier read for someone curious about VC. However, her goal was to describe the "venture capital economy." VC background is covered, but knowledge about the VC economy is ignored. This is largely out of the book's scope.
Making the investment scenarios more concrete by incorporating concrete facts to remove the emotional feel from the VCs decisions would do wonders for this book. Also, re-writing the books goals and scope to reflect its nature as background reading for the general population would more accurately portray what is contained within.
Read this book IF you want to be a "Serious" Entrepreneur.......2005-05-03
Recently I read that, according to a report by Staples *, the "Percentage of American adults who say they have an idea for a new product or innovation: 42." (* Office Solutions, March/ April 2004, p. 10)
Going on the report stated that the "Top reasons for not getting an idea to the drawing board: not enough money (75 percent), not knowing where to start, ..."
If you're in that 75%, then reading Confessions of a Venture Capitalist will be an enlightening experience.
Ruthann Quindlen, a one-time investment banker now with Silicon Valley's Institutional Venture Partners, lays it on the line in this revealing glimpse inside the mind of a Venture Capitalist.
The book is divided into 11 sections, comprising 36 short and entertaining chapters.
Section 1: Life in the Bubble
A short history on life in Silicon Valley.
Section 2: People
"People Are to a Business What Location Is to a Restaurant" (need I say more)
Section 3: Markets
"Find Markets the Size of Texas"
Section 4: Business Models
"Faster, Better, Cheaper" versus "Brave New World"
Business models function as a blueprint on how the company will make money.
Section 5: Venture Capitalists
Stages to funding process and the role of Venture Capitalists.
Section 6: Entrepreneurs
Common mistakes and other words of wisdom for entrepreneurs.
Section 7: The Fine Line between Bizarre and Brilliant
Section 8: The Dumbest Decision I Ever Made
Section 9: Valuation and More
"You Can Have a Small Piece of a Large Pie or a Large Piece of Nothing"
Section 10: A View from the Trenches
Section 11: Five Short Years to a Revolution
If you're serious about transforming your ideas into market reality, you'll most likely need external funding from investors. "Confessions of a Venture Capitalist" will help you gain insight into how investors think. With this knowledge you'll certainly be able to put your best foot forward when asking for money.

Not Quite Appropriate for the Post-Bubble Age.......2005-01-15
As a General Partner at Institutional Venture Partners (IVP), Ruthann Quindlen has seen her share of entrepreneurial ventures succeed - or fall by the wayside. In this book, she describes the world of venture capital as it relates to both the investor and entrepreneur. Most striking are the number of topics discussed in barely over 200 pages of writing. At 36 chapters, this book covers each subject briefly, yet thoroughly, using examples from the "real-world", rather than droll academic jargon. Its rapid-fire structure reads easily and is useful as a quick-reference tool.
Unfortunately, the subject-matter strongly reflects the ideology of Silicon Valley throughout the dot-com bubble - shoot first, ask questions later (profitability can wait). Quindlen accurately identifies the Internet stock-market bubble as a fragile and possibly short-lived phenomenon. At the edge of her writing, however, lies the familiar overly optimistic attitude that drove capital investment into startups with no hope of achieving a sustainable business. Her examples are refreshing, yet nearly all focused on internet technologies that are hardly representative of all entrepreneurs. Many of the lessons are still applicable and important to any fledgling company seeking venture capital investment, but others should be revisited in light of changing attitudes toward the "internet paradigm".
The book is structured well, covering 11 primary subject areas including market identification, business model creation, start-up valuation, and decision making. Each subject area contains a handful of example-laden chapters, guaranteed to help the budding entrepreneur avoid the common mistakes of countless startups. And if providing helpful information for investment-seeking entrepreneurs is the primary goal, examining the life and occupation of a venture capitalist is the essential secondary component. Quindlen discusses her best and worst decisions as an investor, and provides a chapter dedicated to the role of women in the heavily male-dominated venture capital community.
Overall, the content is broad, and many examples are somewhat "touchy-feely". Alone, Confessions of a Venture Capitalist is not useful as a standalone guide for the industry, but this is not its intent. As a primer text, this book is ideal - budding entrepreneurs and seasoned veterans alike will find the examples both useful and enjoyable. Alongside it, however, should sit an arsenal of reference guides focusing on business plan development, financing, and valuation.
Joshua A. Gerlick
Read the chapter titles and Skip.........2004-02-23
If you have had even a minor exposure to startups (worked in one, or a friend has worked in one, and told you several stories), this book will seem like "Obvious, duh!". There are a few interesting points, but very little in the form of enlightening/revealing anecdotes.
The book is funny to read after the Internet-bubble has burst. Ruthann is busy trying to say how venture capitalists are most valuable for a company's success, and how the Internet is going to transform everything and how the "new economy" companies need to be valued, etc.
You are allowed to spend only half an hour on this book. :-)
Stay Away From This Book..........2003-08-01
Well, another reveiwer here wrote exactly what I felt reading this book. But this book is so bad I wanted to write a review myself. First of all, the stuff mentioned here is hadly any confessions, they are confused jargon written by a confused person wanting to make some money by cashing on the buzz created by the tech boom and VC world. Second, the book shows us nothing about the high-stakes world of start-up financing, you wont understand how VCs value companies or how they try and build companies. IVP is an old firm and a respected one, reading that the author is from that firm you might get carried away into believing that she knows a lot about the VC world. Nothing! a much better choice to spend your hard earned money would be "Done Deals" or "E-Boys". those books give a better account of the VC worlds.
You can read this book in 30 minutes and you end up learning nothing. Neither from the perspective of the VC (investor) or from the perspective of an entrepreneur. There is one hilarious chapter in the book where the author has to enquire about one of her portfolio companies progress. the only intelligent question she could come up with is "is there any momemtum is sales?" thats all. nothing more, so you dont get to understand what VC look in entrepreneurs, you dont get to understnad how VCs add value to startups, you dont get to understand how companies are valued, you dont get to understand how VC do their exits, basically, you just dont get to understand anything that the books claims to impart you. Nothing, dont spend a cent on this book.

Bond, on ice.......2006-08-16
Though a bit dated in its technology and political descriptions, this Bond story still holds up pretty well. A new Nazi organization is attacking communist interests around the world with well organized terrorist attacks, and Bond finds himself working with agents from the Soviet Union, the United States and Isreal to try and bring down these Nazis before they can consolidate their power. This unhappy alliance of agents is ocmplicated by deceptions and crossed agendas, leaving Bond on his own to try and bring down the elusive Count von Glöda. This story includes a number of interesting twists and provides a sufficiently thrilling ride to qualify as a successful Bond novel.
Best post-Fleming Bond book.......2004-07-23
In this, my favorite James Bond 007 continuation novel Gardner pits his character against a Neo Nazi force inside the Arctic Circle. Intricate plot twists, interesting locations and tense, suspenseful action highlight this novel which also proves to be a fan favorite among a number of people in the 007 fan community. Definately recommended.
Icebreaker continues the rising John Gardner Era!!!.......2002-08-01
In his 3rd book, John Gardner pits 007 with agents from the CIA, KGB and MOSSAD working against a Neo-Nazi force. Another masterpice thanks to John Gardner. Not as good as the first two, but is absolutely stunning anyway!
Another Solid Bond Book By Gardner.......2001-11-27
As John Gardner's third Bond novel, Icebreaker shows an increasing understanding of the character. The novel shows a good deal of creativity as far as situations and the Neo-Nazi villains are concerned, and keeps the reader guessing as to who on Bond's team are actually on his side, especially as the book progresses. All in all, a nice adventure for Bond, and a nice time for any Bond fan.
Bond never gives up!.......2001-06-05
Grab a seat and enjoy this best seller! I sure did! Loved it all! Bond stays irristible! Great storytelling by the late Gardner! Never give up on three famous numbers! 007! great action at its best! Fast and Furious! Lively Imaginative.

Customer Reviews:
Detailed Research on the Korean Chaebol.......1998-12-22
This is an excellent and a very detailed report on one of the Korean Chaebol, Hyundai.
You will understand how the Korean economy is structured and operating in South Korea and why they have the problems facing today.
Also very valuable is the part on the difference between Japanese and Korean business operation in the States. It reminds the rest of the world about what difficulities would be encountered and what issues should be pay attention to.
