Book Description
This book presents a model of computing and a measure of computational complexity which are intended to facilitate analysis of computations performed by people, machines, or a mixed system of people and machines. The model is designed to apply directly to models of economic theory, which typically involve continuous variables and smooth functions, without requiring analysis of approximations. The model permits analysis of the feasibility and complexity of the calculations required of economic agents in order for them to arrive at their decisions. The treatment contains applications of the model to game theory and economics, including comparison of the complexities of different solution concepts in certain bargaining games, and the trade-off between communication and computation in an example of an Edgeworth Box economy.

Description:
Based upon my previous historical work, I attempt to isolate and identify what appears to be a profound shift in the conception of the economy in recent economic research, focusing on five areas: mechanism design, zero-intelligence agents, 'market microstructure', engineering economics and artificial intelligence. The shift identified concerns treating markets as diverse algorithms, and will have profound effects upon the conceptual frames used to address the economy. Rather than deal in vague imponderables, in the paper we proceed to sketch the emergent outlines of the implicit alternative program of an evolutionary computational economics constructed from the theory of automata which situates the problematic existence of diverse market species at the very center of the research agenda, and not, as happens all too frequently, to relegate it to the margins of modern economic thought. The laws that are sought under the new paradigm are laws of the markets, not laws of human nature.

A Must for Working Women.......2006-12-03
This book is great. It focuses on what women do in the workplace that underminds thier career. It also talks about how you should act. It's a great book for women working in a corperate jungle. It's a little hard to read at times, and she focuses on her life experiences in the magazine industry. Therefore, some of the things she talks about don't relate well to my field. I'm sure reading this book will help me in my career.
Highly valuable book, even if you're not a self-help type.......2006-10-05
I was just out of college when my friend's mother gave me this book. My friend and I rolled our eyes - we were *definitely* not self-help-book readers. I still am not. But many times over the past ten years I have referenced this book in conversations with friends. I have found myself applying many of the tips that Ms. White provides. You don't have to be a hyper-ambitious, ladder-climbing corporate professional to get something out of this book. Among the tenets that have stood out to me over the years are:
-Don't always need to be liked
-Don't smile too easily
-Don't apologize too quickly
-Don't clean up after other colleagues (especially men)
-Don't be a perfectionist at the expense of innovative thinking or getting things done
Simply the notion that men and women (in broad strokes, at least) behave differently and are treated differently in the workplace was a novel idea to me, coming out of a liberal arts college during the mid-1990s. Reading this book gave me an awareness that everyone needs. Obviously, no one book will apply perfectly to each of us, so you can't go looking for that. But do look to this book for many useful ways of seeing the professional world and your own role in it.
Enjoyed, learned but read it all with a grain of salt!.......2006-06-10
I have never believed, or wanted to believe, in the feminist views of the world. I like to believe that if we focus on results, deliverables, and excellent performance and good merit, we will indeed get ahead - man or woman - in corporate america. Reading this book however did have certain advice in handling some situations that only arise for women in the workplace. Not every bit of advice or circumstance applies to all of us, but overall, this was a very good read, I took bits and pieces of advice from Kate and really did enjoy her stories and her candid sharing of the experience she had been through. I really do recommend it to everyone - not just women. It's good to be aware of our ingrained beliefs and learn to let go of them and face life with a much more open mind.
People Pleasing is not the way to go.......2006-06-01
This is the golden advice: people pleasing is distinct from delivering credible results. In the world of world it is being respected that wins the day. Being liked is a matter of fickleness and not based on results. Results that are measured are all that matters.
Not for "Every Working Woman".......2006-05-24
This book applies to women who are in leadership positions, which I am not, so I despise the title "Nine Secrets Every Working Woman Must Know". It's misleading. I'm currently reading this book and have only found a small paragraph that applies to "every working woman." Given the title, I thought the book would give helpful tips on getting ahead for the average working woman, but it doesn't. Needless to say, it didn't do me much good for where I am currently in my career.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful!.......2002-03-21
Ideas and messages spread through human communities in the same way that viruses jump from person to person and group to group. This premise - that social trends saturate populations like contagious epidemics - is an intriguing foundation for a book, and indeed, Malcolm Gladwell's examination of the theme is at times a fascinating read. The book is at its best when applying the epidemic theory to marketing by attempting to identify the key individuals that help transmit a trend, or for that matter, a disease. However, Gladwell never quite succeeds in knitting these observations into a cogent and coherent argument. The book reads like a set of notes - some of which come off as unnecessary digressions. But on the basis of those sections that truly illuminate the cycle of trend dissemination, we from getAbstract recommend this book to marketing, advertising and promotional executives.
This Book.......2000-09-16
This changed my life, as cliche as that sounds, it did. Kate White lays out lots of common sense and things I 'knew,' but never put together before. A friend gave me this book when I worked for a boss just like Richard (Machiabelly)from Survivor. I learned to respect myself, prioritize, make a plan and forge ahead. Old habits of self-sabatogue fell away as I started to make my own rules and follow them. I have just been tapped by a woman acquaintance to be on her graduate shcool committee, and I am buying her a copy of this!
Book Description
This module explains the growing number of Application Servers and their variants (Mobile Application Servers, Commerce Servers, B2B Servers, Multimedia and Collaboration Servers). This is one module of an extensive handbook that systematically discusses how to translate e-business strategies to working solutions by using the latest distributed computing technologies. The focus of this module is on application servers that package several middleware and infrastructure services into a platform to support development, deployment, and management of modern applications. Chapters of this module explain the principles of application servers and systematically discuss a) Mobile Application Servers based on wireless middleware services such as WAP, I-Mode, J2ME, and others; b) Commerce Servers based on e-payment systems, electronic catalogs, XML, secure C2B trade; c) B2B Servers based on ebXML, Web Services, workflows, EDI, EAI; d) Servers for Multimedia and Collaboration Applications based on groupware, SMIL and RTP; and e) "Super Application Servers" that combine numerous services needed for web, mobile applications, and EC/EB services on a single platform (IBM's WebSphere is an example). Chapters of the module also include several real life examples and case studies to highlight practical applications.
Customer Reviews:
Very Clear Discussion of Mobile and eCommerce Platforms.......2003-08-06
If you want a hype free and well thought out discussion of the platforms for EB/EC and mobile applications, then this module is for you. The author does an incredibly good job of defining application servers in terms of middleware platforms and then goes on to clearly discuss the specialized as well as general purpose app servers. The discussion proceeds from mobile application servers to ecommerce servers to B2B servers and concludes with multimedia and collaboration servers. The evolution of these servers into powerful "super app servers" such as .NET and J2EE follows in a natural manner. Very much worth the cost. I read this module after reading the equally well written Middleware Module. These two modules really cover the ground in the basic middleware services and the packaging of these services into powerful application development and deployment platforms.
Book Description
The crucial link between theory and practice
In The Portable MBA in Entrepreneurship Case Studies you'll meet people who have used the business theories and practices presented in The Portable MBA in Entrepreneurship to start and run their own entrepreneurial ventures. You'll get a real sense of what it takes to conceive, develop, finance, and operate a business, and how particular elements, such as business plans and financial forecasts, function in the real world. These case studies cover a broad variety of service and product industries: retail, wholesale, mail order, and Internet. You'll discover the trials and rewards of starting a travel agency, launching a new glass-cleaning product, setting up a fashion Web site, and selling women's hosiery through direct mail. Other studies cover ventures in the computer industry, the restaurant business, automobile service franchising, and business consulting.
Each case study is illustrated with exhibits —financial statements, business plans, sample contracts, and more —and many are supplemented with end-of-chapter questions that help you analyze the viability of each entrepreneurial venture and test your ability to respond to the challenges you'll face in pursuit of your own entrepreneurial dreams.
Customer Reviews:
An okay collection of case studies.......2002-02-04
This book is an "okay" set of case studies. I say okay because there is no real cohesive structure to the book and the case studies themselves are a little stale, most harking back to the early and mid nineties. Of course, since the book was published in 1997, this is to be expected. If I had had the foresight, I would have either waited for another edition (if one is forthcoming) or look for another one. Aside from the dated material, the case studies were written by many different people. This reduces the book's usefulness as a study tool, or even a good read. Personally, I would have liked to have a little analysis by the authors. I'd have to rate this book as average.
Good Cases Covered.......2000-03-30
This book can be considered above average. However, it does not cover too many cutting edge technology related cases that interests the today's entrepreneur. Nonetheless, the book can be a starting ground to kick-start anybody's little venture and avoid some of the mistakes covered in the cases.

Customer Reviews:
Written from the trenches.......2003-09-21
Ms. Leon works successfully with the most underemployed, difficult to employ, and nearly impossible to keep employed population: prison parolees. As a parole officer, I am familiar with her work with our criminal population and have reviewed her book. Her agency contracts with the state of California to provide encouragement to men and women ex-prisoners used to robbing and stealing to support their drug habits. Many of these deceitful and violent people get out of prison with genuine hopes for a real job. Unfortunately, their previous work is at the end of a gun barrel or selling crack cocaine and heroin. Ms. Leon works individually with ex-offenders, capitalizing on their hopes, but preparing them to face real-world barriers in the work place. The book is well-written, and best of all, in a workbook format to be used by the job seeker frustrated by the barriers in the workplace. I use it with my own parolees. Ms. Leon's book would help individual readers, but better, it would be used in job-seekers groups, trade schools, or community colleges were students prepare for the working world. Her experience with tattooed and toothless convicts is a valuable buy for any law-abiding citizen.
Great book - I truly enjoyed reading it........2003-07-08
I truly enjoyed reading the book. The workbook is easy to read with clear language, with a "pinch of humor" -- and definitely not boring. Page after page, I thought of friends, family members, acquaintances, clients I work with (and myself) the benefits of reading this book. Even, if you think you know the ins-and-outs of job seeking, as a resource book, it will be helpful. The author knows the business of "how to find a job", gives good advise and the information is up-to-date with a focus on the "real world". I highly recommend this book - for those who are currently job seeking, would like to change jobs or careers, or are trying to find their "first job". Think of the dollars spent buying this workbook, as a small investment for a better job and better future.

Customer Reviews:
The BEST ETF book for Canadians.......2004-12-22
This is the best book about ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds) for Canadians. It's the only book about ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds) for Canadians... It explains what ETFs are, how they are superior to mutual funds. There are some strategies in there, Core and Satellite, Sector Rotation, and there's even a strategy called the Canadian Couch Potato ETF Portfolio. The author also explains the tax implications (for Canadians). There are several appendices which list all kinds of web resources, details of ETFs, explanations of the different indices, and so on. The book is written in a very logical and readable style. This book is very good value for the price.
There are other aspects of trading which I think are very important but are not covered in the book. These include risk management, money management and position sizing. For that, you would still need a book like Van K. Tharp's "Trade your Way to Financial Freedom" or Marcel Link's "High Probability Trading". That's why I rated this book 4 stars instead of 5. Overall, I was quite pleased with the book.
So, if you want to learn about ETFs, this is the book to get. Especially if you're Canadian.

Customer Reviews:
Filling the gaps.......2004-09-10
This work fills a void in African American and general U. S. History. It is important for the general public, not just academia. Business success has became a negative image for too many youths, and this work shows that African Americans have always been successful within the capitalist system as entrepreurs, not merely consumers. It also demonstrates how African Americans have been a vital part of the economic development of the nation!
A missing part of American History.......2002-10-15
This book is covers the development of African-American Business from The Colonial times to the present. It covers corporations, partnerships, banks and various other enterprises. You will enjoy this book.
A work that is needed.......1998-09-19
This book traces the development of black enterprise in America. It is a return to the days when communities, including those in the tradition of black Americans, placed enterprise at the very center of their activity. It also reminds us of the blue-print for success in America. More importantly, it is a return to scholarship which concentrates on the importance of self-help, enterprise building and the ability to think and act like a free person. Since the early 1960s, studies of failure have dominated literature on black Americans. This book returns us to literature which examine how people actually created economic stability in hostile situations. It also reminds us that the excellent literature on present day immigrant groups share a lot in common with the ealry literature on black Americans. A great piece of scholarship. It is also instructive to note that Madam Walker, Booker T. Washington, and Mr. Johnson are pictured on the cover. This denotes a time which entrepreneurs, rather than politicians and ministers, were the most important leaders in the black community.
