During the later half of the nineteenth century, a majority of Brazilian women worked, most as domestic servants, either slave or free. House and Street re-creates the working and personal lives of these women, drawing on a wealth of documentation from archival, court, and church records.

Lauderdale Graham traces the intricate and ambivalent relations that existed between masters and servants. She shows how for servants the house could be a place of protection—as well as oppression—while the street could be dangerous—but also more autonomous. She integrates her discoveries with larger events taking place in Rio de Janeiro during the period, including the epidemics of the 1850s, the abolition of slavery, the demolition of slums, and major improvements in sanitation during the first decade of the 1900s.

Because of its sheer size, the book, at first, appears to be overwhelming. However, it's clearly written and easy to move through quickly. Many PR people -- especially senior practitioners -- tend to turn up their noses at books on the subject (e.g., "I've lived it, what could I learn from a silly book..."). But, while not every page is for every practitioner, it's loaded with good information, some tactical, some theoretical. At the least, a handy reference guide regardless of experience...

Tiny and innacurate.......2002-04-14

Much too small to be a pictorial, and what's with "Northwest Airways"? If the author can't get the company name right, what other facts are incorrect?

As another mentioned, this book can't even get the name right.
At no point was the company called "Airways", it was Northwest Oreint and then merged with Republic Airlines taking the name
of Northwest Airlines.

Being a 10+ vetern of Northwest Airlines I read lots of incorrect information in the book, so many that I would not even be able to list it all! In all a bad book!

I'm not sure why the photo of the cover says "Northwest Airways" when in fact, it should say Northwest Airlines. When I see a mistake like this, it's disconcerting. Kind of makes me think there will be more mistakes inside. And there are plenty more. This is only the most obvious one...

Overall, I liked this book. It's small size makes it easy to carry in the camera bag. The indexes listing the planes/N-number/serial # are excellent. It could have included more photos on the historical type aircraft. But for an airline with the history of Northwest, the size of the book be much bigger as well as the price.

This book was really disappointing. It is about the size of a paperback novel, so the pictures in the book are really, really small. Only 18 pages focus on the history of Northwest and each of those pages has a black and white photo on it as well, not very in-depth.

This is just a facts and figures book, if you want to know the wing span of a 747 this book will tell you. If you want to know what the fleet number of N301US is, this book will tell you. I can't recommend this book, though.

Perhaps a bit misleading.......2006-08-31

I recently purchased the book "As one door closes" since I had lost two people on flight #255. I expected to hear a lot of details about the event itself, but was suprised to discover that it was about the authors life up to and after the event. Again, my interest was in the events surrounding the accident, etc. Also since one four year old survived, I thoufght it might be her story. I essence I felt I was misled by the title.

An Inspirational Story of Love.......2003-03-05

Talk about a book that you will not be able to put down. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will wonder at the strength and dignity of Annie Weissman. Weissman lost both her daughters in the crash of Northwest Flight #255. Her memoir details the before, during, and aftermath of the crash and how she dealt with this unimaginable loss. What struck me was the feeling of transformation: how Weissman learned to deal with this tragedy and how uplifting the ending is to the reader. I sent this to my sister as a gift and she read it in one sitting. She called and told me that through the memoir she had a new and more appreciative understanding of parenthood, love, and friendship. It is a must read for anyone who has lost a loved one, anyone who needs a reminder of the importance of love, or anyone who has loved ones in their lives.

From the supplier: Northwest Airlines has made a dramatic recovery after it nearly filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1993. Heavily burdened by the debt it had incurred from a leveraged buyout in the 1980s, the firm could not a meet a $1 billion debt payment. CEO John Dasburg averted a financial collapse by convincing the airline's unions to accept pay reductions in exchange for Northwest shares and its creditors to agree to a debt rescheduling. The Eagan, MN-based carrier came back from the verge of bankruptcy with a vengeance. After losing $1.8 billion between 1990 and 1993, Northwest reported record net income of $295.5 million on revenues of $9.1 billion in 1994. The firm's success may be attributed to Dasburg's decision to rationalize operations even when this strategy was not popular. He chose to focus on Northwest's core markets, going against the conventional market wisdom contending that serving markets across the board is necessary for airline survival.
