Problem with the Questionnaire(s) in the Digital Version.......2003-09-13
I've not been able to really complete the reading and excercises in the book because the questions in the digital version of the book were scanned in and are unreadable on my IPaq. I would like to find out if this "problem" will ever be fixed so I can get some use out of the e-version of this book.
Visibility is a key to "Power &Influence".......2001-05-18
To achieve power and influence, people have to know who you are, what you stand for, and why they should promote you, do business with you, or even VOTE FOR YOU! The authors give great tips on creating a leadership role for women, but creating a strategic 'personal' publicity plan needs to be part of the package.Visibility is part of leadership and to really take charge of your future - you have to create a significant image in the workplace, in the community - or on the political scene.

Great insight on yourself and others.......2001-03-10
This book is insightful and fun. It punctures the usual stereotypes about the difference between male and female leaders. It quickly showed me that it was okay to be competitive and task driven. After all, one in every three women is. I wish I had read it 20 years ago. The test is incisive and Zichy's advice is right on target - become comfortable with yourself, play to your strengths and appreciate what others bring to the table. I also loved reading about the women she profiles - about their backgrounds, ambitions and views on leadership. This book is a unique toolkit. There is something in it for everyone.
Women and Power.......2001-03-10
Do We Really Want Women to Have More Power? Reviewer: John Westergaard from New York, New York USA Hey, guys, this is a scary book. Zichy tries to tell us her power 'model' applies equally to men, but I'm skeptical. It's about how women can scheme to attain power. Sure, it's a must read for us guys but not to apply the Zichy program, although that's not a bad idea either. It's a must read because we need to protect our backsides. Know what's coming. Zichy puts out a lot of sneaky, tricky stuff like 'how to get along with your boss', how to create 'a more effective team' (read 'takeover coup'), how to steal business from guys by 'better client management', etc. She admits her own business went up 50% after applying the Zichy system. Well, who do you think she took the business away from if it wasn't guys? The book provides a toolkit with exercises and case studies of 38 successful women of which two are in Washington -- Christie Whitman and Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison . You don't think this system works? She's also got president-in-due-course Hillary in there. 'Women and the Leadership Q' could be the most dangerous book around!!!

This book has proven to be very helpful to me as a doctoral student. I have written a lit review and used this book throughout the process. I look forward to using it throughout the dissertation process.

Solid way for liberal arts types to break into tech corps.......2001-10-12
The author's key premise is sound--high tech companies have lots of positions that low tech liberal arts types can fill. The key is how to break in and how to learn the jargon. This book is nuts and bolts, not an elegant read, but quite useful as a "how to" guide. This is for the person who doesn't mind "working up" into a position from the bottom. It's a good guide. Too many folks feel "stuck" in low paying "non-tech" jobs. This need not happen. This book has some good guideposts out.
Great Book, even Better Presentor.......2000-08-21
I went to a seminar taught by Bill in April, and bought his book on the spot.
It is informative even to a person with no computer background, I was a bio major in college!!!
Now I am in software, as a Assistant Product Manager and really exceling, it is true what Bill says, it is the mindset and savvy that will carry you, the technical stuff you can and will learn along the way
I was able to apply the principles in his text in giving advice to ppl on how to get their own tech jobs (advising them to buy the book)
his book is fun to read, inspring, and chalk full on insider stuff it would take yeeeeeeeeeeeears to figure out on your own, frankly, it is one of the best investments you could ever make
Build your confidence in searching for positions in hi tech.......2000-08-06
A good book to include in your job search library. It will build your confidence in approaching high technology companies. You will see how to translate your low-tech but important skills into good positions in the contemporary job market.

Followup to my Jan 30, 2000 review - I GOT A HIGH TECH JOB !.......2000-07-17
Thanks to Bill's book, I made the career change from being a horticultural consultant for a laboratory to being a technical writer for an ecommerce company in the Silicon Valley. I got serious about my job search in November, finished Bill's book in January, started networking and going to industry meetings, started interviewing with companies in April and started my new job in May. Bill's book was right on the money. I work reasonable hours for a well-managed, successful company. THANKS BILL !
The Best Book Out There!.......2000-06-21
For us "low-techies", this is probably the best book out there to help cross the digital divide and begin a great career in high tech. Not only does Bill detail, in normal language, the industry and how to crack it, but also how to build your career once you're in. Everyone considering the leap into high tech should read this book!
Customer Reviews:
Lin Lougheed.......2000-06-18
Lougheed's grasp of English grammar is at best arbitrary. The exercises in the grammar section are therefore replete with mistakes and irrelevancies which test the patience even of an intermediate class.
Efficient and effective!.......2000-03-17
This book has proven successful in preparing our students for the TOEIC exam as shown in our control exams for measuring language learning progress. I recommend it for intermediate level students. There is also an Introductory Course by the same author for Elementary Students which is as good as this one.
Excellent!.......2000-03-17
Instructions absolutely clear. Lets students use knowledge of outside world. Wide variety of vocabulary. Allows students to discuss reasons for choices when checking answers. Excellent grammar patterns. Most useful Patterns to Remember sections. Very good reading comprehension questions.
Thorough!.......2000-03-17
If you're looking for a practical but thorough preparation book for the TOEIC, you've found it. In the Longman TOEIC, I have found the vocabulary work and the systematic grammar review especially useful.
Longman's costly oversights.......1998-10-24
This book is excellent, as are all the Toeic books that Longman publishes. One shortcoming is strident, however, and that is the absence of tapescripts at the back of the book. I can only postulate that this omission is designed to stop the Toeic aspirant from cheating, but it certainly makes the acquisition of this set of Toeic material both costly and cumbersome.

The cassettes are OK but where's the book?.......2000-07-26
I've received the cassettes today but there were no corresponding books. I checked my not-yet-shipped orders. No way. There is no book to be used with the cassette. No tapescript, no user's guide, nothing. Is there anyone out there who can tell me how in the world I can use those cassettes which cost me 60 something dollars? htezcan@ixir.com

Book Description
High-Tech Betrayal is the first comprehensive study of life and work in an American high-tech factory. Victor Devinatz uses both research and personal experience as a shop floor organizer to dispel the popular belief that high-tech industries offer positive employment alternatives for those seeking to escape jobs in the "declining" industries. While many believe that the "light manufacturing" work of high-tech industries is preferable to "heavy" industrial work, Devinatz attacks these misconceptions by exposing some of the myths that such work offers more promotional opportunities, requires higher skill levels, and is better paying. Devinatz demonstrates that U.S. high-tech factories of the late twentieth century are much like the industrial sweatshops of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries where poorly paid workers toiled in the shadows of brutal foremen without the benefits of union protection. Devinatz argues that, instead of creating exciting work environments of the future, high-tech firms are marching boldly into the past.
Customer Reviews:
Little things matter alot.......1999-10-09
This work illustrates a particular culture of oppression at a high-tech company. The author shows action by action how management creates an environment where workers will not be likely to organize. Management actions include faulty and frequent time studies, line supervisors who punished everyone when one geller fell asleep, supervisors who started racial rumors to pit one employee against another, telling employees they were laid off due to a business slowdown but bringing in new recruits and not telling the "laid off" employees that they would never be called back, just to name a few things.
My favorite characters were the Assyrian gellers; I can still envision them diligently working, although their grit was never fully tested. I really liked them. The Latino gellers were as close to heroes as any characters in the book.
This book is instructive and revealing in unexpected ways. It is a compelling story and an easy to read book.
An excellent depiction of the high-tech factory........1999-08-31
High-Tech Betrayal is a book that many different audiences will find attractive. While it is founded on academic premises, it does not read like an academic book. It is easy to read, describing the author's experiences when he attempted to form a union in a high-tech factory. The experiences are richly described, allowing readers to understand specifically the circumstances and issues faced by the author.
The book lays out the scenario up-front, so that the reader has a clear understanding of the situation at the time of the experience. Additionally, the individuals referred to throughout the book are clearly described, so that their comments and actions can be readily understood.
Finally, this book does an exceptional job of portraying the workplace that the average American does not think exists in this country, but in reality is more common that most would admit. Described are the struggles facing a group of individuals, attempting to better the lives of themselves and their families. This book reminds me of the classic The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. The major difference is the era of the book. The similarity is that this book demonstrates that organizations in some cases today still attempt to keep workers down, while the organization itself might be thriving.
