The economy of the ancient Middle East and Greece is reinterpreted by Morris Silver in this provocative new synthesis. Silver finds that the ancient economy emerges as a class of economies with its own laws of motion shaped by transaction costs (the resources used up in exchanging ownership rights). The analysis of transaction costs provides insights into many characteristics of the ancient economy, such as the important role of the sacred and symbolic gestures in making contracts, magical technology, the entrepreneurial role of high-born women, the elevation of familial ties and other departures from impersonal economics, reliance on slavery and adoption, and the insatiable drive to accumulate trust-capital. The "peculiar" behavior patterns and mindsets of ancient economic man are shown to be facilitators of economic growth. In recent years, our view of the economy of the ancient world has been shaped by the theories of Karl Polanyi. Silver confronts Polanyi's empirical propositions with the available evidence and demonstrates that antiquity knew active and sophisticated markets. In the course of providing an alternative analytical framework for studying the ancient economy, Silver gives critical attention to the economic views of the Assyriologists I.M. Diakonoff, W.F. Leemans, Mario Liverani, and J.N. Postgate; of the Egyptologists Jacob J. Janssen and Wolfgang Helck; and of the numerous followers of Moses Finley. Silver convincingly demonstrates that the ancient world was not static: periods of pervasive economic regulation by the state are interspersed with lengthy periods of relatively unfettered market activity, and the economies of Sumer, Babylonia, and archaic Greece were capable of transforming themselves in order to take advantage of new opportunities. This new synthesis is essential reading for economic historians and researchers of the ancient Near East and Greece.

A "Domus" ideology or a matrifocal society?.......2002-06-28

Ian Hodder has written a quite interesting book arguing that the early phases of neolithic Europe was dominated by an ideology which he calls "domus" and was characterized by a focus on women, nurturing and the houses. This was later replaced by an ideology he calla "agrios" which was characterized by a focus on men, aggression, weapons and the wild. He had some minor references to Gimbutas in his book but he never admits that the whole structure is taken from Gimbutas theory on the matrifocal Old Europe and the patriarchal Indo-European warrior societies that replaced it. Every single society which Hodder place in the domus category is societies which Gimbutas thought belonging to Old Europe and every society which Hodder defines as an "agrios" culture is Indo-European and patriarchal according to Gimbutas. And, of cource, Gimbutas theory is from 1974 and Hodder's from 1990.

I think the greatness of Gimbutas theory is clearly shown by the fact that even an archaeologist like Hodder are using her model, although he don't seems to admit it, when he creates a theory of his own. Of course, he states that "I certainly cannot say whether these societies were matrilineal, matrilocal or matriarchal" but at least "certain aspects of being a woman was conceptually central" (p. 68). Hodder's fascinating book is, whether he likes it or not, encouraging for those who thinks that there is evidence for a Goddess Cult and a matrifocal society in the neolithic. He had realized that the symbolism indeed was centered on women. He didn't draw the logical conclusions, but there are other people who can do this...

Move to the Front is a must read for not only women who wish to be successful in business (or military) today, but for men who want to learn how to interact effectively with the other half of the working force. Jo Rusin gives clear, concise, and valuable information on how to be a team player, how to develop the proper attitude for success, and how to handle situations which arise when playing by long established male rules of the game. A well written book filled with excellent examples, it is highly recommended.

Excellent Overview of an Excellent Handbook.......2003-06-26

This paperback gives an excellent overview of the technical as well as strategic issues in e-business and distributed systems. It sets the stage for all other modules of the handbook (applications, architectures, integration, networks, middleware, platforms, and management)through several real life case studies and examples. The preface very nicely shows several course examples where the modules can be used and points to the instructor material that is available from the author site. The first chapter starts with a discussion of strategic issues in e-business and shows how the latest distributed computing technologies enable these strategies. The discussion of Real-Time enterprises is well placed in the discussion. The second chapter contains many case studies and examples to highlight the practical issues.

The same practical style, helped with numerous diagrams and examples continues in all modules. The modules are quite inexpensive and rich with well written content. GREAT WORK.

Great for some.......2002-09-15

This book covers a lot of ground: everything from teamwork to use of voice to overcoming nervousness to dissenting audiences and a whole lot more. It is unusually strong at how to give feedback to participants. It takes the reader through how to implement the projects in meticulous detail. Too meticulous. I don't really need to be told in every project that paper and pens are required. For trainers looking for help in structuring projects for inexperienced presenters - this book is everything you would ever need. As a trainer working with people who already have basic presentation skills it scores high on thoroughness, but low on creative inspiration.

Interesting family, satisfactory writing.......2007-02-26

The story of Reichmann family and how they built a real estate empire only to lose much of it is an intriguing story, however not a 200 page book. I feel like this book added irrelevant information in order to reach a length that would be acceptable to readers of the genre and that the writing style was inconsistent at times.

For fans of the time period I strongly recommend Going For Broke as an alternative.

Basic Info For People That Haven't Done Any Research.......2002-12-13

I thought this book was a decent guide to the basics of research for anyone that has never thought about doing market research before. So if you run your own small service business this might be the perfect tool for you to get through some basic searching and surveying techniques. Some of the listings of where available information resides is handy and might not be known by the uninitiated. Wasn't much of an Internet focus due to its publication date of 1995. If you expect more than basic you'll be disappointed but at least its readable.

I used this book for a global operations class. It contains both text and cases in one book. However, cases in some chapters do not directly relate to the content presenting in those chapters. Moreover, some cases are really difficult to read and understand the context of the case for analysis. However, there are some good HBS cases.
