Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This study is a new breath for the 21th century management........1999-04-27

This brillant study is a new breath for the 21th century management. As stated by Thomson "in the next millennium, emotional capital will be an asset on the balance of sheet of any major business. Business leaders will be working to a blueprint for their organizations that will go well beyond the focus on traditional assets. They will be exploring new territory-how to build upon two critical and interrelated assets, knowledge(intellectual capital) and emotions(emotional capital)".

In this study, Thomson discusses and explains some vital issues :

* the difference between intellectual and emotional capital,

* elements of emotional capital, inside and out,

* how organizations are using personality as a sustainable competitive advantage,

* the past, present and future of emotional capital : a timeline,

* the emotional contract between organizations and employees,

* the different types of models involved in stakeholder relationship,

* the six stages of marketing and communication processes called "the six Is",

* the link between "the six Is" and emotional capital,

* how the culture of a business is created and sustained by process and language,

* the new financial model-from volume to value to vision.

This visionary approach is a must reading for all business leaders (in particularly for all HR managers who don't like to play "policy police" and "regulatory watchdog" role in the next millennium).

A brief critique of this study see "Delivering On the Promise/Brian Friedman".

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Review of The 9to5 Guide.......2000-03-31

I want to recommend a great text on sexual harassment, The 9to5 Guide to Combating Sexual Harassment. In my classes, I have supervisors and employees, union and non-union, as well as traditional students. Across the board, this book speaks in language they can understand and learn from, providing examples, solutions and problem-solving methods that can make a difference.

One thing I especially like about The 9to5 Guide is the enormous amount of personal experience woven throughout it. This provides a form of validation and self-awareness. It allows people to get in touch with and reflect on their own experiences (at work or at the university), to realize that what they've experienced has to do with power relationships in society, with socially constructed stereotypes and roles. Sexual harassment is not inevitable and it can be prevented-it can be changed. This book is indeed a practical guide, giving people the kind of understanding that enables them to act.

The book recognizes that only a small percentage of the people in our society are committed sexual abusers or harassers. Most people oppose harassment, but sometimes allow it to happen because they themselves don't want to become a target. 9to5 provides a social and political context, explains what sexual harassment is and how it happens, gives advice to the vast majority who don't want it to be there-including workers themselves, men and women, employers as well as unions. It appeals to that part of all of us which believes in fairness, that wants not only our own workplace but society as a whole to be a welcoming place.

One reason I value this book is that it acknowledges this is not an individual problem. People need validation and support on a personal level. The also need collective action to change any issue rooted in systemic problems. The advice 9to5 gives is down-to-earth and clear. It allows people to go from what the book suggests in general to a discussion of their own concrete situations.

The Electronic B@zaar, by European information-technology analyst Robin Bloor, offers a knowledgeable global perspective on the way businesses are being impacted today by the Internet--and how they might use it in the future for true competitive advantage. The "Silk Road" of the subtitle was once the world's main commercial thoroughfare, dotted from Damascus to China with popular trading posts where goods were exchanged for redistribution throughout Asia and North Africa. The Internet is now "destined to become the primary trading route for the whole population of the planet," writes Bloor. He then offers his take on the transformation, complete with four fundamental mechanisms he says will help one gain the most from it. These include a new model of market growth he dubs "the hockey stick curve"; various communication channels, "by which electronic interaction occurs in the electronic economy"; the "force of automation," which fashions innovative opportunities from new technologies; and the overall change in business behavior driven by the worldwide adoption of the Internet as the trading bazaar of the 21st century. Mixing practical observations on these core principles with informed speculation on the entire evolving process, the book should prove of interest to e-business entrepreneurs seeking an additional electronic edge. --Howard Rothman

                  Book Description

Just as the Silk Road was once the world's greatest trade route, the e-Road is poised to become the trading highway of the 21st Century.

3 out of 5 stars Good general information.......2002-01-25

This book provides history of trading and the web. There is also good basic economic and marketing information. However, after stating that every business needs to be on the Internet the book doesn't provide much in the way of practical advice. Some of the predictions for the future have already happened and others don't seem all that realistic. It seems he was caught up in the hype of the times. Interesting reading, but needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

3 out of 5 stars Good general book for beginners.......2001-09-15

This book does not contain any practical knowledge or resource information. It is not in an order to be readable from front to back. Random terms and phrases are thrown at you and mediocre explanations are given. Everything is the greatest thing sense sliced bread. This reminds me of when computers first got in the hands of the people and books were written saying now make money with mailing lists.

                  The ten chapters:

From the Silk Road to the eRoad

                  The Mad Hatter's eParty

The Flight of the Roast Chicken

                  The Aftermath

                  A World Tuned Upside Down

                  4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2001-03-31

Author Robin Bloor makes it pretty clear: Either get your business involved with the Internet or prepare for your enterprise to die. Bloor's credentials are fairly impressive. He turned his business, Bloor Research, into a Web business that actually makes a profit, or so it says on the jacket blurb. Bloor is pretty straightforward about the book's focus: mass media communications history, the current Internet and the World Wide Web's future potential. This in-depth read (good and gripping, though the writer's constant use of the @ symbol can be annoying) takes us from Guttenberg all the way to a future filled with smartcards, micropayments and data privacy. The most interesting element is Bloor's speculation on how future media might affect future political systems - because as the information society gives us more data about political happenings, we might want more control over our governments. We [...] find this stuff pretty interesting, but then we're already on the Web. Are you?

3 out of 5 stars OK Generalist View of e-business.......2000-11-25

Aimed at virtual entrepreneurs or those embarking upon e-nabling bricks-and-mortar companies, `The electronic B@zaar' focuses on marketplaces of transactions.

The anecdotal, repetitive, web-referenced chapters span: from silk road to eroad; the Mad Hatters eParty; The Flight of the Roast Chicken; Leveling the Playing Fields; Apples from Alaska (new firms include: portals, commercial communities, information subscription, webcasting, software merchandising, games, advertising, information brokers, supply chain enablers, merchandisers, and pure ebusinesses); of Markets and B@zaars (transactions include: negotiated deal, brokered deal, auction, retail, and pure market); eConstructing the Enterprise; the Alligator Pools; The Aftermath; and A World Turned Upside Down.

The core message involves: the hockey stick growth curve, the publish/subscribe mechanism, the force of automation, and the economics of the electronic marketplace.

Strengths include: the broad base of global & historical anecdotes; the engagingly approachable (not jargonistic) writing style; a well structured synthesis of content.

Weaknesses include: 20% excess words for content; slight advert tone for Bloor; the numerous technical errors (e.g. VR in use by 84 in manufacturing never mind just predicted by William Gibson; Moores law will actually likely hit limitations (unless current "prototype" technologies advance in quantum devices/ biological systems or photonics- for "Prime Faraday"); Web not the Internet "born" in 94; html confusion; predicted 3D avatars already been around for a few years (see www.activeworlds.com); the Pentium flaw of 95 was proven; predicted web-radio and web-TV been around for years; lightweight treatment of getting others to link & increase website traffic); a superficiality of analysis including economics/growth curves, and automation; and a seeming lack of understanding of technology beyond finance/marketing/services fields (e.g. engineering, FMCGs, etc.. etc..).

Overall, an enjoyable read in many ways similar to Siegel's glossy brainstorms in `Futurize Your Enterprize'(0471357634). `Bazaar' needed more attention to (technological) accuracy (or perhaps remove errors), more science & rigor, and more examples of adding-value work processes- a bit too much marketing spin for this reviewer! Other alternatives in this area include: Deise et al's deep KPMG `E-Business' ; May's technical focus `The Business of E-Commerce' ; Cohan's draft review of `e-Profit'.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding, not information.......2000-10-17

It's rare to find a book that leaves you with a real understanding of a subject - rather than a mass of information on it - but this is one. Robin Bloor's knowledge and writing style combine to great effect. He gives practical advice to those who need it and provides a thorough background to the Web for all.

This book introduces the rapid tooling technology and its industrial applications. It is suitable for use as a reference text for a course in RP. Many case studies are also included to help the reader understand how RT is actually being used in the industry. This will help the reader make decision for his particular application.

                      Book Description

As China continues to be heralded as a rising economic power, the need for an understanding of its institutional effects--such as investment-related policies, regulations, and laws--on foreign direct investment increases as well. Institutions and Investments employs interdisciplinary perspectives from economics, business, law, and political science to shed light on the interaction between institutional changes and investment patterns and to form a clear picture of investment behavior as China's legal and regulatory infrastructure has developed over the reform years.
Organized into three main parts, the book first discusses the evolution and nature of China's FDI regulatory framework. Part 2 examines the various modes and variant patterns of FDI in China in the reform years. Part 3's central task is to demonstrate a systematic link between institutional changes in China's FDI regulatory framework and the changing patterns of FDI. In conclusion, Jun Fu finds that China has made substantial progress from a command economy to a market system, but that it still has a long way to go before it truly attains a transparent and rule-based system.
This book adds new dimensions to the scholarship on China as a growing economic power and will be of particular interest to international economists, political scientists, and business scholars studying China.
Jun Fu is Associate Professor in the School of Economics and Management, Tsinghua University.
