    Book Description

Gender and Development or Women in Development policies have been promoted in development organizations for almost three decades now. Although they have helped improve the immediate material condition of women, by and large such policies have involved organizations in reproducing the ideological and material conditions for women's subordination in the family and the economy. This book offers a gendered analysis of development organizations in a range of different institutional arenas. It builds a conceptual framework for exploring the politics and procedures internal to the institutions which design and implement policy, and then applies this to the analysis of empirical case study material. Other contributions reflect on strategies to help organizations internalise or institutionalise gender equity; to make accountability to women a routine part of development practice.

      Book Description

This volume gives the first in-depth look at the sizeable population of women who are domestic workers in Latin America and the Caribbean. Twenty-two essays document how these women have begun to struggle for recognition of their social role in the family unit, for the right to organize, and for the legislation and programs already won by other members of the working class. They have decided to be "muchachas"—"girls"—no more, but rather household workers, women with a profession.

This book really didn't break any new ground, but then again, it's a "Dummies" book. I made an oral presentaiton out of it and it was a smash hit!

5 out of 5 stars Great information for growing my business.......2003-08-20

I really like that the Dummies series are so comprehensive and I can go straight to the chapters that best serve my needs. In Professional Networking for Dummies, the section for Entrepreneurs and Personality Styles was most helpful. By giving me examples of "what to say" and how to be effective even as an introvert, I am feeling much more effective with my networking.

      2 out of 5 stars Pretty mediocre.......2002-06-01

A lot of filler, a lot of common sense. Not a whole lot of techniques, useful advice or even general theory to help you out here. Basically be outgoing and nice to people.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it's weight in gold if you're going online!.......2007-08-18

I just got this book last week and I'm not even done with it and have gotten so many 'nuggets' that it has more than paid for itself already! It's well written, easy to understand, organized extremely well for easy reference and full of helpful resources.

The section on 'Keeping it legal' saved me great error already (I was going to buy a domain name that could've infringed on a copyright) and I have found several free web builders online that are 10x's better than what I had been using. There's so much practical information in this book that I no longer feel guilty for buying it new.

This book is zero fluff, tons of examples and free or very reasonable resources, and lots of food for thought. The table of contents is so detailed that it makes for a quick reference (does anyone read a book like this cover to cover?) Greg Holden's writing style is personable and to the point and very easy to understand.

I truly don't understand all the reviews that say this book is no good, not sure what they have been reading, but I have no less than a dozen books of this nature, and this is one of the few that isn't 75% fluff. I'm somewhat of a website newbie, starting about a year ago trying to do my own website. It's alot harder (for me)than I originally thought and have tried no less than 6 different hosting accounts, 4 different online web builders, and 6 different web editing software trials (Expressions, dreamweaver, publisher, coffee cup, page spinner and frontpage). One of the best discoveries in this book was that Firefox offered a FREE...quality...web editor!

This is the 2007 edition, maybe people were referring to the earlier version of the same title. I have gotten way more out of this book than I thought I would. I guess I must be a true "Dummie". It's definitely worth your time checking it out if you are new to the online business world, you can always resell it on Amazon and recover your moola.

2 out of 5 stars this one really is for dummies.......2007-08-05

One of the worst "For Dummies" books I've ever read. Normally, I'd rate for dummies books a 3 or 4.

3 out of 5 stars Not worth it.......2007-04-19

You could do an online search and find more information than this book gives you. I did not enjoy and I returned it. It is broad and never really gives you step by step instrucions on how the webite actually works and how to create it.

2 out of 5 stars very rudimentary, broad overview.......2007-04-14

People who use the internet regularly will not get much out of this book--it's no joke when it says "for dummies". Greg Holden does give a broad overview of the many aspects to starting an online business but even then the information is outdated and at some points, simply not accurate making you wonder where this guy gets his facts.

In an environment that is not only competitive but also changes rapidly it is important that you are equipped with the most up to date information. This book however, still proclaims AOL king and web sites using tables and frame "advanced". Although the book was published in 2006 (and in its 4th revision), it feels more like it belongs to the 90's.

So even if you are new to the internet and need a place to start I recommend you find yourself a different book.

Few technologies will do more to boost small-business efficiency than a local-area network (LAN), which enables an organization's computer users to pool and share information easily and to communicate inside and outside the company. This book approaches networking from the point of view of an owner of a small business whose employees have been using computers for some time. The owner suspects that a LAN would make things easier but doesn't have the technical knowledge to build one or the money to hire a network consultant to do the job. After reading this book, such a small-business owner will know what decisions he or she needs to make (about network protocols, for example), what needs to be purchased, and how everything gets put together.

Weadock begins by explaining the advantages of LANs--advantages that probably are already familiar to readers of this book. He quickly moves into a discussion of the costs and benefits of LAN ownership, and it's this kind of material that distinguishes this book from regular Dummies titles. The author then reviews the technology decisions (peer-to-peer or client-server? Ethernet or Token Ring?) and purchases that you'll need to make based on those decisions. All the major network operating systems, including IntranetWare and Windows NT, get intelligent coverage. A companion CD-ROM includes a two-user trial version of IntranetWare and various other utilities and sample programs. --David Wall

      Book Description

Small businesses can become big businesses with the aid of a computer network. With the right network in place, you'll have all the technology you'll need -- now and in the future. And when it's time for expansion and enhancement, upgrading your network can be a matter of plug and play instead of rip and replace.

Small Business Networking For Dummies can give you the edge that your small business needs to compete in a networked world. As author Glenn Weadock clearly explains, small-business networks are affordable, easy to manage, and (most importantly) easy to use. Select the system software and hardware that's right for you, put tried-and-true cost-saving techniques to use, streamline work processes, and improve the critical interactions between clients, vendors, and partners with the powerful features of a networked system. With Small Business Networking For Dummies in hand, you'll be able to design, build, and run an affordable network in no time at all.

I'm perhaps too much of a dummy for this book, but even I realized that the '98 edition seems somewhat outdated in the networking game. Still, it did help reinforce some concepts.

You probably won't do all the work yourself, nor should you, but this book helped me understand the key decisions and what to outsource.

3 out of 5 stars Good for some purposes.......2000-01-11

Let me start with a couple of positives. First, this book is a very good "executive summary" of networking technologies and issues. Second, the author takes the attitude that computer networks are not just about hardware and software widgets; the business culture and the financial issues involved in network structure and maintenance are just as important. On the downside, the book did not have the information I was looking for. The primary issue facing our location is "what are the ongoing costs of administering a 150-node network, and can we afford it?" The author included his business' web URL in the book and solicited feedback. When I mentioned this to him, his response was "hire a consultant to tell you that information". Perhaps this is the most realistic advice, but, since the author is a consultant, he seems to have a vested interest in that as a one-size-fits-all answer. This book did not have the information I needed. Unfortunately, there are probably none out there that come any closer.

          Book Description

Whether your business is just a gleam in your eye, a newly launched operation, or a full-fledged firm that's humming right along, you'll never experience real growth without a substantial infusion of cash. Long gone are the days when venture capital groups seemed to pour millions into every "next big thing." Now it's clear that there is real competition for investors, and that only the most viable businesses -- and carefully executed fundraising -- will reap the capital necessary to drive continuous growth.

Raising Capital is the definitive guide for entrepreneurs and growing companies that need to raise capital. The book covers every phase of the growth cycle, and provides tools for building business plans, preparing loan proposals, drafting offering materials, and much more. Now in its second edition, Raising Capital includes a wide variety of updates to reflect the realities of the post-dot-com bust, new trends in private equity markets, and the impact of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, a crucial piece of legislation that establishes new corporate governance requirements in the wake of high-profile accounting scandals.

The book takes you through every stage of the capital process, and provides a bevy of alternatives to evaluate in determining your company's capital strategy. The four parts cover:

          * Getting Ready to Raise Capital: capital-formation strategies, plus recent trends; understanding legal and governance structures and how they affect your ability to raise and use capital; and the role your business plan plays in securing capital

          * Early-Stage Financing: start-up financing; "bootstrapping," or doing less with more at a stage in your business where "cash is king"; private placements versus commercial lending; leasing, factoring, and government programs

          * Growth Financing: strategies for obtaining venture capital; how venture capital transactions work; preparing for and executing an initial public offering (IPO)

          * Alternatives to Traditional Financing: franchising, joint ventures, co-branding, licensing, and other strategic alliances; mergers and acquisitions; plus the Capital Formation Business Growth Resources Directory

Raising Capital provides a huge selection of checklists, charts, sample forms to expedite the capital formation process, and the author relates eye-opening "war stories" and perspectives from the investor's side of the table that will help you avoid pitfalls and guide your business confidently through every growth stage. Featuring comprehensive coverage of all recognized capital strategies, this timely book will help you navigate the murky (and often rough) waters of capital formation.

2 out of 5 stars Poor Resume samples.......2002-01-17

I was so happy when I found this book. It turned out to be very disapointing. I found many of the sample resumes to be too long and outdated. The authors break many of the rules for the writing and the layout. They recommend that people put reference statments at the bottom of the resume "references upon request." In this day in age that is not needed. Many of the resumes where for jobs that are not what I consider Social service jobs. Most of the sample resumes and cover letters are two pages long. Not many HR people would spend the time reading these long documents. I did not find this book to be helpful.

                        Book Description

A tribute to the pioneers of oil exploration in Indonesia (1850-1898). Using authentic reports, diaries, relevant texts, personal notes and pictures, Poley brings to life the heroic efforts of Reerink (Cheribon, W. Java), Zijlker and Kessler (Deli, NE Sumatra), Stoop (Surabaya and Rembang, E Java), Menten (Kutei, E Kalimantan), Kessler and IJzerman (Palembang, SE Sumatra), and their crews.
They faced almost insurmountable odds in many locations: an impenetrable, cruel jungle, an inclement climate, tropical diseases, technical mishaps, financial restrictions, and, last but not least, government and legal constraints. There was no geological science to guide them, and drilling technology was still in its infancy. Yet it was their vision and perseverance which finally put Indonesia on the world map of oil-producing nations, and which contributed materially to the development of today's life of luxury.
Much of the present text and several of the pictures are here presented for the first time to the general public.
