Book Description
Japan has been a pro-active player in the process of globalization, which has had profound effects on the Asian continent, and the globalisation of Japanese production is now having reciprocal effects on the Japanese economy. However, as Japan is an affluent, industrialised liberal democracy, the experiences of Japanese women differ markedly from those of women elsewhere in Asia. The Japanese case is also significantly different from that of other first world nations. The specific economic, political, social and cultural institutions of Japan mean that it is adjusting to globalisation in a way that is nuanced by its history. In addition, such cultural phenomena as the persistence of the ideal of the three-generation family, and homosocial norms have a distinctive effect on women's reproductive and productive work, and strategies of activism.
Globalisation and Women in the Japanese Workforce contributes to the debate about the impact of globalisation upon women. It examines the impact of restructuring upon women's employment in Japan and describes the actions women are taking individually and collectively to campaign for change in their working environment and the laws and practices regulating it.

Book Description
African American theater buildings were theaters owned or managed by blacks or whites for an African American audience. Such theaters included nickelodeons, vaudeville houses, musical houses and neighborhood movie theaters. Although nearly 2,000 African American theater buildings existed in the 20th century, very little has been written about them.
In this book the African American theater buildings from 1900 through 1955 are arranged by state, then by city, and then alphabetically under the name by which they were known. The street address, dates of operation, number of seats, architect, whether it was a member of TOBA (Theater Owners Booking Association), type of theater (nickelodeon, vaudeville, musical, drama or picture), alternate name(s), race and name of manager or owner, whether the audience was mixed, and the fate of the theater are provided where known. Commentary by theater historians is also provided.

Good job on a hard subject to investigate .......2004-11-14
African American Theater Buildings: an Illustrated Historical Directory, 1900 – 1955 by Eric Ledell Smith (2003, McFarland & Company, Jefferson, NC, ISBN 0-7864-1529-0)
This is a valuable book for those who investigate African American performing arts history, but the author, Eric Ledell Smith, faced formidable challenges. First is the definition of an ‘African American Theatre Building.’ Mr. Smith’s choice to narrow his selection to “theatres owned or managed by blacks or whites for an African American audience” is a wise one. Unfortunately, even that sensible yardstick cannot set the boundaries because almost all theatres, black or white, that existed for any duration, changed policy and styles of entertainment (vaudeville, drama, musicals and movies) as needed to keep their doors open. Some, like the Gaiety in Boston, Massachusetts, played white shows, black shows and black & white shows from 1910 through 1920.
A second difficulty is the lack of a historical record to cull. Black performance venues took many forms. A theatre that was open one season could be closed the next and lost to the record even though Ernest Hogan, Charles Gilpin, Billy McLain or Ethel Waters played it. A building might be a church or a grange hall one year and a theatre for the next few seasons before it reverted back to its original purpose. Also, an African American revue was as likely to play a nightclub or a tent as a theatre. Many ‘black’ shows played school auditoriums where theatres were closed to them. The Whitman Sisters who, for 40 years, mounted the most celebrated black revues of the first half of the Twentieth Century, sometimes played in ‘tabernacle tents,’ as did shows headed by Ida Cox and Bessie Smith.
Within these limits, however, Mr. Smith has cobbled together a useful reference work that provides a solid and generous foundation for future investigation. There are a few minor errors (that should have been flagged by an editor) such as found in the description of Chicago’s Regal Theatre. According to Mr. Smith’s entry, the Regal opened for business in 1928 but a paragraph later he writes that “In 1927 musician Lois Deppe was a headliner.” Also, the Gaiety and the Casino theatres in Boston, notable venues for black revues, are not listed.
It is all too easy to sharpshoot a project this ambitious and courageous. Mr. Smith is to be commended for collecting between the covers of one volume many, perhaps most of the theatres (including drive-ins) that played motion pictures or featured black vaudeville and revues that were produced for African American audiences in 37 states and the District of Columbia. This is a valuable addition to the library of those researchers in the field.

5 stars for the Author.......2007-05-13
5 stars for the Author Ragnar Benson. I regularly recommend any of his books. This book rates only 4 stars for its topic, but this is still a must read. I enjoyed it. Another valuable tool to survival. Nothing more enlightening to the effect of philosophies of eating than comparing China and India. With sound philosophy the book demonstrates how a society can starve or prosper. In the continueing chapters Ragnar shows you the practical aspects of eating for free, or for a whole lot less. He provides many specific useful examples as well as a lot of general ideas.I personally would like to free up some of the grocer cash for other endeavors. Eating and staying alive is serious business. If nothing else buy the book for its included recipes. I look forward to to trying many of them but nothing makes me laugh like contemplating a plate of Cat Caccitore. Bon appetite.[may you not be]"lazy dumb, or both"-Benson

Great for the non-traveller, too.......2005-10-06
I simply happen to like common Japanese cuisine (especially sashimi). But, growing up in rural Minnesota, I had no idea how to explore a sushi bar properly. I was lucky enough to find a copy of this book.
I may never need the maps, but the color illustrations & descriptions of the foods are extremely useful, & will help an "gaijin" who wants to explore the cuisine, no matter where you happen to find yourself.
Eating Cheap in Japan.......2002-04-28
This is a great book for travelers to the Far East. If you are there for the first or fifth time this book will help guide in the various dishes that are offered. It has pictures and brief discriptions ....it is pocket/back pack size and I felt truly valuable!!
A must read for anyone visiting Japan..........1999-04-25
Reading "Eating Cheap in Japan" is an excellent way to broaden one's culinary horizons. It contains mouthwatering pictures and descriptions of many of the inexpensive and delicious foods to be found in that exotic country, as well as the types of restaurants in which to find them. While in Japan, I recommend keeping this book on your person at all times, much like you would your passport. Indeed, it is a passport--a passport to a land of gastronomic delights.

Not worth shelf space in a library!.......2002-11-06
No question in my mind why this book is no longer in print! One of the repeated themes in this book is to not shop with your children because they will just whine and beg you to buy all of the snack foods they see on TV. The author then goes on to say that for an entire summer they utilized only kerosene light as they watched TV to save money on their electric bill. DUH! TURN OFF THE TV! There is also a fascinating segment toward the back of the book on how to prepare "shrubs" which can replace the cost of alcohol in your budget. ??? I was waiting for her to tell me how to build the still! Full of sarcastic humor...brownie recipes that contain 3 cups of flour and 5 cups of sugar....save the money you would have spent on this book and apply it to your grocery bill!
Not bad...........2000-01-11
Although most of these ideas in this book are pretty good, I draw the line at purchasing $.49 per pound hotdogs at Aldis to save on "meat" costs, or feeding my dog and cat the cheapest pet food available, to save money (it won't save money on vet bills). She even suggests you just get a smaller pet to save money! Not an option. But overall she does give some good ideas on buying in bulk, comparison shopping, stretching foods, etc. Probably a good buy for someone starting out, but I would round it out with other books such as Tightwad Gazette or some basic cookbooks.
Feed your family well ... while you spend less........1998-12-04
Learn how, where, and when to shop, smart ways to eat out, and how to use food you might have otherwise thrown out. Money saving tips include cheap cleaning solutions, and advice on growing your own harvest. Ideal for young people just starting out.
A must read for anyone who wants to cut their grocery bill !.......1997-11-22
This book is so complete with facts and methods to cut ANYONE'S grocery bill, it is amazing. Pat Edwards includes not only the standard helps of coupon cutting and supermarket tricks but suggestions for growing and making your own products. The book is written to help the reader find their own best method and places to shop. Sprinkled with comments that make me life at myself, this book is both humerous and informative. I have searched for a book like this for years !

Book Description
This text presents an account of the voluntary sector's development and current position in the UK. The authors begin by defining "voluntary organizations" and then briefly outline their history, going on to explain the voluntary sector in relation to law, education and the state. The text concludes with a discussion of policy issues - including the crucial issue of how voluntary organizations can survive in the 1990s and beyond.
Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Resources, Conservation & Recycling, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
Theory predicts that the voluntary or community sector will contribute a range of services that are not delivered by the state or private sectors. This paper examines the changing contributions of the community waste sector in the UK to reflect upon these claims. A rosy picture of the community waste sector is presented from research on the sector in 2002, with a growing number of organisations carrying out a range of services, drawing on multiple and diverse sources of funding. More recent evidence, and information drawn from outside the sector, however, suggests that regulation, competition, and changes to funding regimes are putting the sector under considerable pressure, such that it is likely to change, and that some parts of it will contract. In terms of the claims from theory, the paper finds evidence that the community sector can and has been innovative in the services it provides and the way that it provides them, though similar innovations may emerge from the private and public sectors. The sparse evidence on participation and recycling rates in kerbside and civic amenity sites are equivocal on whether the sector provides enhanced communication as theory would predict. Overall, the paper highlights the difficulty in achieving direct comparisons between the waste sectors without specific focused research for this purpose. It concludes that the challenge for European, national and local government is to influence the necessarily constructed waste markets in a way which will enhance rather than discourage service providers to innovate in the waste material collected, and to communicate effectively with the public whom they serve. Such policies promise to encourage the effective delivery of sustainable waste services from all three - public, private and community - sectors.

Book Description
For anyone about to embark on an international assignment or wrestling with selecting and motivating international executives to achieve their best, Elisabeth Marx draws on the experiences of managers from around the world to show what it takes to create a successful experience working internationally.
Customer Reviews:
Bit of a Jumble.......2007-03-24
There are good elements in the book but, overall, it's a bit unrefinned and probably tries to cover too much in a superficial manner.
For example, the culture triangle is, in principle, a good way to consider the various facets of culture, and to understand where it might impact one's life, but is described using odd parts of grammar: Emotions are matched to thinking. Surely, emotions are to thoughts, or feeling is to thinking.
The analysis of culture is done much better by Craig Storti in "Figuring Foreigners Out", which presents a challenge to your perceptions and provides an opportunity to score yourself, and so assess your match to a particular culture.
The idea that Culture Shock lasts only 5-10 weeks (p7) is far too simplistic. I suspect this reflects a retreat into multi-national/expat community living. True adaption takes much longer - particularily if one is aquiring the native language. If you find yourself in this boat and are struggling to cope, then pick up Culture Shock by Myron Loss. It is an excellent treatment of cultural stress, and leads to a better understanding of the subject: its causes and its cures.
Breaking down invisible barriers to success........2002-03-20
Despite the praise for this book from a senior partner in Arthur Andersen which graces the first page of the text, this is an excellent management text.
As an ex Englishman near New York, one of the surprising things to learn, and thus the point of this book, is that cultural differences can affect us and our work performances.
It is often said that Britain and America are separated by a common language but this does not really convey the full extent of the differences between the two nations. The situation is made more difficult by the fact that American culture has established a hedgemony around the world and particularly so in the UK.
This book is a must read for anyone accepting a post in a foreign country and anyone relocating abroad. Indeed some of the lessons of this book can be usefully applied to different jobs not just different countries.
I like the structure of the book and in particular the focus on the book as a tool to be used and not just read. The use of case studies is very helpful although I personally do not appreciate the manner in which they are written. I would have liked some of them at least to be expressed in a more formal manner with actual references to be used where possible but this is a minor gripe.
Breaking through Culture Shock is written in a very user friendly manner and in a size that is easily followed.
Elisabeth Marx really has hit the nail on the head with this text which has a broad scope great applicability across the continents. My one concern would be with Chapter 5 where she looks at some country specific cases but which excludes Japan. Given that country's importance to business in the world one would think that it warranted inclusion.
That aside, I would highly recommend this book to anyone thinking about embarking on a move abroad and those who have already made a move, whether it be temporary or permanent.
Just a thought, but it would be interesting to see an American author tackle this subject in the same way.
Insightful!.......2001-05-01
Indonesians aren't punctual, but the Germans believe timeliness is a sign of respect. The French are well educated, but elitist. And, spouses and children don't always find living abroad to be a "grand experience." Those are just some of the things you'll learn from Dr. Elizabeth Marx, who explores why many managers have a horrible time abroad. To help improve your managerial experience overseas, she provides a 100-plus item checklist of what to do before you leave for a foreign country, including information on whether to sell your house or have your children inoculated. Her book tells the ambitious manager Everything You Always Wanted To Know About the International Experience but Were Afraid to Ask. For instance - and this isn't surprising considering her background in psychology - she tells corporations to provide psychological testing for employees before sending them to international posts. We [...] say read this before you plan your bon voyage party.
Good "handbook" for preparation of overseas assignments.......1999-04-27
A good blend of work experiences by people from all over the world with emphasis on identifying the "best practices" of preparing, working and returning from an overseas work assignment. Especially effective was the analysis of the psychological aspects of life in other countries/cultures, which included comprehensive views from both the worker and their families perspectives. Overall, the book was a fairly effective in helping me to prepare for my recent overseas long-term work assignment.
