    Book Description

Herbert Hoover rose to political leadership in the 1920s, just as consumer society became dominant in the United States. Although personally uncomfortable with the values of consumerism, he worked to strengthen the economy through policies of conservation and to find desirable occupations for the new leisure available to modern workers. He envisioned great voluntary programs to promote standardization and simplification in American industries that would permit companies to pay both high profits and high wages. And he sought opportunities for healthful, moral outdoor recreation to fill the leisure hours made possible by rising worker productivity. Kendrick Clements illuminates the influence of Hoover's broadly conceived ideas about conservation on virtually every economic policy of the Republican era, from the expansion of the National Park system by 40 percent to the attempt to eliminate radical swings in the business cycle.

Locating the roots of Hoover's personal beliefs in his Quaker upbringing in Oregon and seeing his outlook on the natural world shaped by his frontier experience and education, Clements finds that this policy maker combined an interest in conserving the environment with an engineer's drive to rationalize the use of natural resources. He examines Hoover's difficult negotiation of the Colorado River Pact that permitted the construction of the dam that would bear his name as well as his efforts to create a St. Lawrence Waterway to link the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. Hoover's relief efforts during the 1927 Mississippi River flood and his promotion of timber and oil conservation reveal other dimensions of his approach to conservation.

Although Hoover was not a modern environmentalist, he pioneered some of the first broad environmental policies in the United States. The National Conference on Outdoor Recreation brought together wilderness advocates and urban planners and the passage of the first federal law to limit oil pollution in navigable waters began an ongoing effort to control the effects of industrialization.

Challenging previous critical assessments of Republican environmental policies during the 1920s, Clements proposes that Hoover's conservation efforts were an attempt to balance growth and conservation. His unparalleled examination of early-twentieth-century conservaton speaks to ongoing debates about how best to protect the environment without ruining the economy.

BACK COVER: "This rich, nuanced study is a major contribution to Hoover scholarship and to understanding the pre-World War II history of conservation and the environment. Many Hoover studies examine either Hoover's policies during the twenties or as president. Clements traces Hoover and conservation through both periods, and the result is an extremely interesting and perceptive portrait of Hoover's thinking and his policies in action. A real pleasure to read."--David Hamilton, author of From New Day to New Deal: Farm Policy from Hoover to Roosevelt, 1928-1933

From the author: This paper investigates the extent to which output has recovered from the Asian crisis. A regime-switching approach that introduces two state variables is used to decompose recessions in a set of six Asian countries into permanent and transitory components. While growth recovered fairly quickly after the crisis, there is evidence of permanent losses in the levels of output in all the countries studied. [JEL F39, F41, F42, F49, C32, G15]

          Book Description

The Asian crisis triggered ongoing controversy over the IMF's role in a "new international financial architecture". This book argues for a political approach to crisis and reform, placing current debates in the context of the politics of financial regulation since Bretton Woods. It explores links between domestic political controversy over IMF policy in Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia and the United States and the broader politics of IMF decision-making.

            Description:
We examine the changes in daily financial sector stock returns in Indonesia, Korea, and Thailand in response to IMF-related news during the Asian crisis and compare them with those in non-financial sectors. We find that news of both program negotiations and approval increased financial sector returns in Indonesia and Korea, whereas only program approval is associated with higher returns in the financial sector in Thailand. Sectors such as cyclical consumer goods and non-cyclical services experienced higher returns in Thailand and Indonesia, while almost all sectors enjoyed higher returns in South Korea. We interpret the empirical results based on the characteristics of corporate governance and industrial development policies in these countries.

                          Book Description

This book presents comprehensive mathematical models of turbine-generators, HVDC and FACTS controllers, and small signal analysis of SSR. The emphasis is on the analysis using linearized models. Both damping torque and eigenvalue analysis are covered. Also included are the basic concepts of SSR interactions with fixed series compensation, PSS, HVDC, and FACTS controllers. Timely treatment has been given to the development of electrical analogue for the rotor system, the derivation of the network equations based on circuit topology and immittance functions using D-Q variables. The material is supported by several illustrative examples and case studies based on IEEE benchmark models.
Analysis of Subsynchronous Resonance in Power Systems is an invaluable reference work for power systems researchers, system planners, and designers.

                          Book Description

What’s the biggest problem most entrepreneurs face? Raising money: Without cash, you can’t get a
business off the ground or keep it running.

However, many entrepreneurs have a problem. On one hand, the traditional sources of financing—family, friends, personal savings, the local bank—are often inadequate. On the other, the venture capitalists who have played such an important role in the high-tech industry are interested only in investing much higher sums than most entrepreneurs need.

Enter angels: a new type of investor looking to invest between $100,000 and $1,000,000 in a company. There are about three million angel investors, and there’s a huge market of entrepreneurs and would-be entrepreneurs who want to learn how to attract angels’ interest—and their money.

John May and Cal Simmons are at the forefront of this trend. Not only do they have years of experience in advising, managing, and investing in early-stage companies, they are also the originators of The Dinner Club, a Washington, D.C.–based group of successful businesspeople who hear pitches by entrepreneurs seeking funding and then decide whether to invest their own or the club’s money in those entrepreneurial ideas.

Every Business Needs an Angel offers a fly-on-the-wall look at how angel investors evaluate new entrepreneurial ideas, and provides a wealth of practical advice and insight for the countless entrepreneurs seeking help in their quest to find investors for their businesses. The book covers all phases of the process of finding angels and persuading them to invest, drawing on many examples of real-world companies that have pitched angels successfully—as well as unsuccessfully. These entrepreneurs are in a broad range of industries—from high-technology companies to more traditional businesses as diverse as breweries and concierge services—some quite well-known, like Nantucket Nectars and Preview Travel, whose founders had their own guardian angels.

For entrepreneurs who need money and advice on how to find it, the authors offer enormous insight into this new breed of investor. As the title says, every business needs an angel; this book tells you how to find one.

5 out of 5 stars The first 3 chapters are worth the millions if you are successful!.......2005-11-14

I have the pleasure of being a member of one of John May's groups, Active Angel Investors (http://activeangelinvestors.com/) and I am extremely glad I joined this group.

And now for a one sentence review of the book:
Just the first three chapters (How Angels Evaluate Entrepreneurs, When to Dance with an Angel, & Finding Angels and Making your Pitch) are worth the price of the book and if you are a successful entrepreneur, they can be worth millions!

5 out of 5 stars an easy, accessible style that works.......2003-01-12

A really good intro to the inner works of angel investing, useful for angels and entrepreneurs alike. Focuses on angel groups (the author makes his living managing some large angel groups). A must read insider account if you're starting an angel group or, alternatively, are an entrepreneur looking for angel money. Don't read it for a definitive textbook on everything you need to know about business plan writing, making a equity deal etc. but invaluable nonetheless.

                          3 out of 5 stars Light-hearted view of subject.......2002-04-02

This is a fun, easy-read on the subject of angel clubs - which are valuable but should not be confused with real individual angel investing. John and Cal's writing style is case-book and easy to read. This is a business book that makes you smile ... a little bit because the stories are fun ... and a little bit because there are a lot of not-so-happy stories that they don't tell you about. But being the perpetual optimist, I like reading about the nice stories.

5 out of 5 stars Real Help for PhD's and MD's (with no MBA's).......2002-03-31

"Every Business Needs an Angel" will become a treasured resource to scientists and scholars with great credentials and ideas but with little formal business background and training. It is an excellent travel guide for "intellectual property" company entrepreneurs who are represented by top tier lawyers and accountants but who also wish to acquire, on their own and in advance, an overall perspective and broad oriention to the entire fund raising process along with insight into what to expect and direction about how to behave.

May and Simmons provide an entertaining, fascinating-to-follow road map of the complete process of working with investors which will appeal especially to those who are uncomfortable when put into the position of accepting advice and direction from their professional advisors without some overall comprehension of the substance and scope of the territory which will be navigated together. This book is a first rate companion for what may initially appear to be a very bewildering journey.

1 out of 5 stars Not a relastic take for investors.......2002-03-09

I have read several angel books as well as having spent 5 years running a large fund in the Valley, and I just don't feel that Cal and John have their views correct. The investment world has changed and those who can be to the point and have a good idea with good management have a shot. However, I hope for these folks that Cal and John are not on the other side of the table evaluating.

All the reviewers are 100% right that this so called "book" is complete wasting of time and money. If you are also entertainer my advice is to buy Cruise Ship job in 14 Days. It helped me to get a job in 15 days and after 1 week I am flying to Fort Lauderdale to join one of Carnival's cruise ships.

I am not a fast reader. If I can finish a book in fifteen minutes, it probably isn't much of a book. That is certainly the case in this instance.

If you think that a list of cruise ship lines -- which you can get at your local library -- is worth $13.00, then by all means buy this book. Otherwise, save your money.

If I had turned out a piece of work this flimsy and full of technical errors, I wouldn't admit, as Mr. Marin has, to having a Ph.D. Maybe he had a better proof reader for his Ph.D thesis than he did for this book.

Although he has attempted to provide useful information, most of what he supplies is available elsewhere. I can only hope that Mr. Marin's music-making is more satisfying than his writing.

This book is sort of false advertising, I think. It is subtitled "The Insider's Guide to Finding and Getting Jobs on Cruise Ships Around the World." It should instead be called "A dictionary listing of all the jobs available on cruise ships, a list of the addresses of all the cruise ships, plus 2 whole chapters on working as an entertainer on a cruise ship."

For me, this book did not open the gates of mystery to helping me envision life on board a cruise ship, although it did address it. It also did not really tell me how I should apply for the jobs, how I should prepare myself for such a job, what are the secrets to getting a job.

It tried to cover all the information in a few short pages. Overall the information was too general. The only subset of employees it addresses with any depth is entertainers - especially musicians.

An overview of the chapters: 1- "Working on a cruise ship" briefly addresses some particulars of the cruise ship industry, such as what flag they fly under and why. 2- "Who's Who on Board the Ship" A short paragraph describing most job titles, from "Captain" to "Snorkling Instructor" to "Radio Officer" to "Youth Counselor". 3- "Show Biz on the High Seas" - The chapter that would have made this book useful to me if I were a musician. Tells you about life as an entertainer on a cruise ship and how to apply. 4- "Entertainment Agencies" addresses 5- "Concessions" some addresses for beauty salon & fitness, boutique & gift shop, photography, casino, lecturers, scuba & snorkeling, bridge instructor, and gentleman host workers. 6- "Cruise line directory" Addresses of most if not all cruise lines, including some specific instructions for applying for certain jobs. 7- "Life on Board" answers basic questions like "will I have to share a cabin?" and "Can I receive mail?"

                              Book Description

A massive shift has taken place in Canadian immigration policy since the 1970s: the majority of migrants no longer enter as permanent residents but as temporary migrant workers. In Home Economics, Nandita Sharma shows how Canadian policies on citizenship and immigration contribute to the entrenchment of a system of apartheid where those categorized as `migrant workers' live, work, pay taxes and sometimes die in Canada but are subordinated to a legal regime that renders them as perennial outsiders to nationalized Canadian society.

In calling for a `no borders' policy in Canada, Sharma argues that it is the acceptance of nationalist formulations of `home' informed by racialized and gendered relations that contribute to the neo-liberal restructuring of the labour market in Canada. She exposes the ideological character of Canadian border control policies which, rather than preventing people from getting in, actually work to restrict their rights once within Canada. Home Economics is an urgent and much-needed reminder that in today's world of growing displacement and unprecedented levels of international migration, society must pay careful attention to how nationalist ideologies construct `homelands' that essentially leave the vast majority of the world's migrant peoples homeless.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended reading for immigration policy makers and social activists involved with immigration issues.......2006-05-05

Home Economics: Nationalism And The Making Of 'migrant Workers' In Canada by Nandita Sharma is an in-depth study of homelessness and how such a significant and growing homeless population may be attributed to immigrants and Canada's immigration laws. Meticulously investigating the global system of various national states, Home Economics comprehensively presents an accessible understanding of the intricacies involved in living as a 'migrant worker' or 'illegal' in every aspect of contemporary life. A work of impressive scholarship and detailed research, Home Economics is a seminal contribution to professional, governmental, and academic library collections -- and highly recommended reading for immigration policy makers and social activists involved with immigration issues.

Making Capitalism Work takes on the confused thinking that mistakes the general economic system called capitalism for the particular history and heritage of the United States. Some pundits have argued that free markets are inextricable from a free society and tend to elide qualities they desire or admire (a Puritan work ethic, a democratic form of government, or a low-tax, downsized government) with the necessary conditions for market economies. In what amounts to a comparative study of market economies, the late Leonard Silk describes the many flavors of capitalism. His discussions of the trade-offs between the various approaches pursued by Asian, European, and North American governments are particularly stimulating, pointing out that if it is results we are interested in, there exists a record of economic outcomes that confounds ideological rhetoric.

                                  Book Description

In 1995, Republicans came to power in the United States with an ambitious program proposing to embrace a degree of laissez- faire economics unknown for generations anywhere in the industrialized world. Simultaneously, politicians, entrepreneurs, and economists championed the new bastions of unregulated capitalism that sprung up in such unfamiliar precincts as Beijing and Moscow. Yet to date many free-market economic policies, be it in Prague or here in America, have not lived up to their initial promises. In fact, it has become a common joke in Russia that capitalism has succeeded in making communism look good, a feat unaccomplished by the Kremlin in its 70 year reign.

In Making Capitalism Work, Leonard and Mark Silk analyze the failures and successes of capitalism as seen most recently in the former Soviet Bloc, Japan, China, the European Community and the United States. While recognizing that capitalism has been successful in a number of countries, the authors point out that overly simplistic policies advocating an unfettered capitalism ignore too large a range of issues central to the formation of any moral economic system. Viewing capitalism as simply one of a number of economic systems, Leonard and Mark Silk address such issues as the obligation of the rich to the poor, the responsibility of the state to insulate its citizens from market fluctuations, the responsibility of present generations to provide for future ones, and whether economic systems can set the proper extent and limits of individual rights and freedoms.

An important, concise, thought-provoking book this is the last book Leonard Silk wrote before his death late last year and has been completed here by his son, Mark.

5 out of 5 stars How multigeneration hatred evolved in Ireland.......2003-01-22

The book was an eye opener. I thought I had an understanding of Irish history. I was astonished and outraged. The purpose of the book is to reveal the true outrages that caused the multigeneration enmity between the Irish and English and succeeds. No one can understand the present situation in No. Ireland without it.

The book was well referenced, even sighting English historical information to substanciate the truth. 50-100,000 Irish women sold into prostitution and slavery by the same English traders, god-fearing puritan's, who sold African's into slavery. No reference to this in modern history books.

I never knew that the Irish were made literal slaves by the English or the extent of the ethnic and religious hatred and the genocide perpetrated by the British against them. The slaughter and genocide perpetrated has been squelched in the press and media for centuries.

It leaves me with the question of what kind of a media do we have in the U.S. that has kept this imformation from us?

Numerous American's of many ethnic groups have told me that I was lying, it didn't happen just like the holocaust. I was dumb struck and had to bring in the book to prove it too them. It begs the question: What's with diversity in this country does if it only goes one way?

Its a book any one who believes in real diversity should read. You can't understand the present Irish situation between the IRA and the UDL without it.

                                        EXCELLENT
