Impressive and engaging analysis.......2007-05-15

This book is an overview of a very specific area, mainly the history and actions of immigrant Jewish garment workers, who primarily immigrated from the Pale, in great numbers after 1905. Obviously, this is a specialized study and not the sort of thing you would pick up in place of a Danielle Steele novel, but the writing is clear and compelling. One of the main benefits of the book is that although you may have no particular interest in the subject matter, the book is so engagingly written that you learn almost in spite of yourself and have trouble putting the book down.
The book is split into 6 major parts: Jewish Womanhood in Eastern Europe; Remarking the Jewish Family Economy in America; Unwritten Laws: Work and Opportunity in the Garment Industry; The Social and Cultural Dimensions of Work; Women and the Mass Strike Movement; The New Unionism and the New Womanhood.
The book is at its strongest in the earlier and mid sections, when the author relies on a lot of first-hand accounts to create the portrait of what life was like for these women, where they were coming from and what they experienced. The discussions of the actual historical events were a bit more removed from the first-person analysis, and accordingly, less engaging. All in all, a very interesting book, particularly for those interested in understanding what life was like for a substantial portion of immigrants at the turn of last century.

This book is about the growth of the garment workers' unions and the place within that growth that the Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe took. It was well-written, well-researched. Were I a history professor looking for a informative additional text regarding the turn of the Twentieth Century, I believe I would put this book on the top of the list.

According to International Data Corp. (IDC), the worldwide market for Internet-related services is expected to explode - from $4.5 billion in 1997 to $43.6 billion by 2002. The main impetus for this trend is the rush to implement e-commerce Web sites.

Often, the term electronic data interchange (EDI) is used inappropriately as a synonym for e-commerce. In fact, EDI is only one aspect of e-commerce; e-commerce comprises other elements, including electronic faxes, e-mail, and e-forms. E-commerce has become a critical business component for many businesses.

CTR's new report explores the different e-commerce models - business groupings, business-to-consumer (B2C) e-commerce, and business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce - to help managers determine which method is most appropriate for their companies.

The report is intended for e-commerce Web site implementers and users - both groups have much to learn about conducting business online. This is a great book for fundraisers of all levels. It is more like a self-help book than a fundraising book. I agree with all who said this is not a how-to book, but a go-for-it book. Highly recommended.

I purchased the pdf version of this book online in 2000. It is not the complete version of the book this one is and has only 142 pages of text, but it may have been the wisest purchase I I've ever made! Unlike the last reviewer, I believe Proven Resumes is worth every single penny and much more!

I would like to note that I am in a career field that does, in fact, require a chronological resume, and yet I use the wonderful self-selling techniques Ms. Pontow shares on my own resumes consistently, and it has truly paid off, not only financially, but in my belief in my own abilities. In just the four years since applying this system, my income has increased by half, paying me back a thousand fold, yearly, of my initial purchase price!

I have also used Proven Resumes to help other people with their resumes, and MOST of them have used the skills-based format, and MOST of them have achieved their employment objectives with these resumes. For instance:

A part-time teacher aide with teaching credentials but no professional teaching experience is now a full-time kindergarten teacher. A grocery store cashier obtained a position as a paralegal secretary. Another grocery store cashier, who had worked at the same store for 20 years and had never written a resume before, is now happily settled in a full-time bank teller position. A veterinarian friend who was applying for a year-long leadership training project was rejected the first year she applied, but the second year, after I re-wrote her resume using Proven Resume techniques, she was accepted. Oh, yeah, and I helped my teenage son with his skills-based resume, and he is now working as a website technician / reporter... an incredibly amazing first job!

I would like to make one more plug: These techniques can be used for more than just job resumes. I write up a skills/project based "annual report," if you will, for my annual reviews, so that I can prove to my boss that my skills are growing, and I'm consistenly making the workplace better (You don't stop selling yourself just because you've landed a job). I've used the quantifying and qualifying techniques to write persuasive proposals. And I used a skills-based resume to apply for, and obtain, a position on a state-wide board of directors. It's not just about GETTING a job!

For just a few dollars more, this book has nearly twice as much information as the still-available-online version. It's a bargain!

Be prepared to re-write.......2003-04-16

I purchased this book about a year ago to assist in a job search I was doing. Initially, I was very excited; I felt the strategies made sense and the results were positive changes in my resume.

Unfortunately, the recruiting industry may not be ready for this radical change in resume strategies. Nearly 100% of the people who responded to my resume submissions said "You have a great skill set, but I really need this resume re-done in a traditional, chronological style." Who knows how many never bothered to respond?

Some of the information in the book is valuable, especially the keyword mapping items, but it certainly is not worth the price tag.

Once I made the decision to move on I needed a little help in repacking my experience. This book not only helped me rethink my skill set but also expanded my horizons. I was able to make a substantial jump using some of Pontow's recommendations. I passed the book onto others looking to make a move. Well worth the $ ... and I'm happily on a new career path!

Regina Pontow has to be the undisputed goddess of resume examples, interview strategies, and heroine of the entire career imbroglio. Read it, flip through it, cut and paste to your heart's content. She has the POWER to drive your words.

I want to thank Mr. Wood for a book that has cut through the ususal facts and figures to offer a different view of how investors make decisions. He asserts that we use our head and heart as much as our brains. Wood's endeavor to bring the reader back to the basics of human needs before offering a basic overview of financial investing is refreshing and quite helpful.

A Different Perspective.......2003-09-07

I found this book to have a refreshing difference in looking at one's finances. Instead of trying to jump immediately into "how to" Mr. Wood asks the reader "Why are you investing" and "What does wealth mean to you?" In an era that has brought many Americans to the altar of excess, the author asks the reader to consider not only the acquistion and protection of one's wealth, but the importance of giving back to a society that has allowed us to acquire our material wealth.
