    Book Description

How do people make decisions? How can we help people make better decisions? How can we best study the processes of decision making? The growing field of behavioral decision research, which seeks to link observed decision behavior to underlying psychological mechanisms, may provide the answers to these questions.

The volume is based on a recent conference held to honor the work and memory of the late Hillel J. Einhorn, a pioneering scholar in behavioral decision research. Composed of contributions by leading researchers, Insights in Decision Making provides a state-of-the-art image of work in this field.

The range of topics covered includes conceptual and technical issues the bridge the gap between theory and the practical concern of improving decision making, difficulties in statistical thinking, experimental studies of processes of judgment and choice, and the emergence of new paradigms for studying decision behavior.

Providing many avenues for future research, Insights in Decision Making will be essential reading for students of the psychology of decision making and will prove valuable to readers in psychology, economics, statistics, and management.

This book is a collection of essays in honor of Hillel Einhorn ,whose death at the early age of 46 in 1987 is a tragedy.Einhorn's main interest in decision theory(science?) was decision making under uncertainty/ambiguity.Much of his scholarly output was in association with Robin Hogarth, the editor of this book. Both Einhorn and Hogarth were unaware of the work on decision making under uncertainty/ambiguity undertaken by J M Keynes in his A Treatise on Probability(1921;TP)and the informal extension made by Keynes in his 1936 book,The General Theory, as well as the major advances made by D.Ellsberg in his unpublished 1962 dissertation(published in 2001 by Garland Press as "Risk,Ambiguity, and Decision").A reader, who is aware of these sources, can admire the technical exposition of these collected essays(as well as the technical expertise of Einhorn's work)while also recognizing the limited originality of this work in the light of the work of Keynes and Ellsberg. For instance, the main Einhorn-Hogarth model of decision making under ambiguity that allowed for ambiguity preference,as well as avoidance, and incorporated a variable to account for the attitude of the decision maker towards ambiguity, does not represent any significant advance over the "Restricted Bayes/Hurwicz criterion" contained in chapter 7 of Ellsberg(2001,pp.194-202).The essays in this book by Wallsten,Edwards, and Lichtenstein,Slovic, and their coauthors, make for interesting reading ,as does the essay by Payne and his coauthors.Unfortunately, they also contain errors of omission/commission.The assessment made about Keynes's views in the TP by Wallsten are all incorrect(See Wallsten,pp.31-32)and appear to be based on parts of chapter III of the TP only. This is exactly the same error committed by Frank Ramsey in 1922 and 1926 in his error filled reviews of the TP.It is simply false to state,as Wallsten does, that"Keynes suggested that it would occasionally be possible to put bounds on numerical probabilities...in which case...the probability is only known vaguely."(Wallsten,p.32).The vast majority of Keynesian probabilities are interval estimates.Similarly, the claim that "...virtually all decision theories share the idea that degrees of uncertainty can be represented uniquely and numerically by a probability measure..."(Wallsten,p.32)means that the message of Ellsberg(who uses sets of probability distributions) and Keynes has still not gotten through yet.

      5 out of 5 stars So Helpful.......2004-03-29

I bought this book when I decided to go back to work after a couple of years at home with my kids. I was honestly a bit scared about selling myself and convincing an employer to take my skills seriously, but The Mom Economy gave me the tools I needed to prove my worth, which also gave me confidence. I started a new job recently, and so far, it's all manageable. Anyone who's going back to work should use this book - it will make you feel like you have support in the process.

      5 out of 5 stars Hands on.......2004-03-13

Elizabeth Wilcox has managed to address almost every issue that faces a mother who needs or wants to work. After reading this book, I was able to come up with an unusual way to make my job fit with my family obligations, and my boss ended up being impressed with the way I handled the discussion. I could do it because the book gave useful tools and taught me how to be prepared. It is rare to find books that are actually practical and how-to in this area, so this one really stands out.

        Book Description

Take a walk through the process of setting up a secure E-commerce Web site with Securing E-Business Applications and Communications. In this book, you get a brief but comprehensive look at the fundamental and important cornerstones of E-commerce: from the basics of security to the development and implementation of an actual E-commerce site. Written with the heterogeneous network in mind, it includes implementation examples for Unix (Solaris and Linux), Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 2000. The authors pay particular attention to the security issues involved. They also highlight the plethora of encryption algorithms that are instrumental in securing data. Rather than burden you with the intimate details of these algorithms, the authors cover "the pieces" that so many other texts miss. Together, you and the authors develop a site from concept to implementation. Numerous coding examples illustrate the how-tos of the most current technologies - from Microsoft, Sun, and others - to support secure transactions. They also explore the most popular web servers, the technologies that drive them, and commercial utilities that can be used to manage them remotely. While there are plenty of expensive, shrink-wrapped packages that claim to do everything you need, nothing is better than rolling up your sleeves, getting your hands dirty, and learning how the technology works. Spend some time doing that now and you'll save yourself a bundle of money over the long haul. There is no other comprehensive, step-by-step guide on how to create a secure e-commerce site than Securing E-Business Applications and Communications. Without it, you will spend countless hours finding the information it contains.

              Book Description

If yours is among the tens of thousands of organizations for whom six- and seven-figure gifts are unattainable, then Andy Robinson's book, Big Gifts for Small Groups, is just the ticket for you and your board.

The subtitle, A Board Member's 1-Hour Guide to Securing Gifts of $500 to $5,000 says it all.

Robinson is the straightest of shooters - a sort of John McCain of fundraising. There literally isn't one piece of advice in this book that's glib or inauthentic. It has all been earned.

As a result of Robinson's `no bull' style, board members and volunteers will instantly take to Big Gifts for Small Groups, confident the author isn't slinging easy bromides.

They'll learn everything they need to know from this one-hour read: how to get ready for the campaign, who to approach, where to find them, where to conduct the meeting, what to bring with you, how to ask, how to make it easy for the donor to give, what to do once you have the commitment - even how to convey your thanks in a memorable way.

Believing that other books already focus on higher sum gifts, the author wisely targets a range that has been neglected: $500 to $5,000. Why? Here's what Robinson says:

              • These gifts are large enough to justify the time it takes to develop a prospect list, prepare a letter, follow up with a phone call and visit the prospective donor.

              • They're small enough to include a wide range of prospects.

              • They're both modest enough to seem feasible to the novice, but also ambitious enough to make it worth their while.

              • Taken in the context of a major gifts campaign, with a team of solicitors working together, gifts of $500 to $5,000 can add up to a lot of money.

Robinson has a penchant for good writing and for using exactly the right example or anecdote to illustrate his point.

By the end of the book, your board members and volunteers just may turn to one another and say, "Hey, we can do this" - and genuinely mean it.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read for Boards and Staff.......2006-01-31

Any small to mid-sized nonprofit that requires funding cannot afford to be without Andy Robinson's book. In a nutshell, he demystifies major donor fundraising and makes it accessible to busy board and staff members. In short, direct chapters he helps remove people's natural fear of the process and instills the sense that asking for money is not only honorable but also incredibly rewarding.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for learning how to fundraise.......2006-01-12

What I like most about this book is that it's so practical and seems so doable. I know that most ordinary citizens would probably choose a root canal over the prospect of having to ask someone for a big ($500 to $5000) donation, even for a cause they really care about. But with the help of this book, you'll feel confident that you could really do the things that the author, Andy Robinson, is suggesting. Why? Because Andy de-mystifies the process of fundraising by breaking it down into easily conceivable steps. And, you feel like you can trust him because he seems like a regular guy, not a superhero. If he's done it, then you can too. I like that he shares what's worked for him. An added benefit -- you can read this enjoyable book in less than an hour. (Of course, you'll want to pick it up again and again for its handy advice.)

5 out of 5 stars Small Book, Big Advice!.......2005-02-04

Robinson has written an excellent and pithy introduction to the art of soliciting gifts - it's a relief to have the advice written in a clear and concise manner that's just right for the board member who has any trepidation at all about asking for money but wants a quick primer on how to make a significant difference in their fundraising skills.

                      5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book!!!.......2006-10-31

The author captures the experiences of career-changers across a broad spectrum. If you're a career-changer and looking for more information on the topic, start here! When I found the book in my library, I was feeling stalled in my career-change and felt like it was never going to happen. But, this book makes me feel comfortable in the fact that I *can* change careers and do it successfully as long as I stick to my plan and have a major support team behind me. (I was also comforted by the profiles because many of them changed careers 3-4 times! I'm not alone!)

                      5 out of 5 stars I'm in this book!.......2003-07-17

I am profiled in this book. It was a pleasure to work with the author, Mr, Otterbourg. He did a very thorough job! I am truly honored to be among the many career changers in this book. People can make a change and achieve their goals in life!

                      5 out of 5 stars Switching careers.......2001-09-25

Mr.Otterbourg has eloquently written a wonderful tool for all of us who contemplate a career change. It is a primer of practical advice, clearly outlining the challanges one faces in considering a particular career change, ranging from finances, time committment, impact on family and redefining established skills in a new profession. Each career move was illustrated by a profile of a person who actually succeeded in the change. These profiles offered inspiration and encouragement. My thanks to the author for writing such a valuable tool.

                      5 out of 5 stars It's never too late!.......2001-09-08

Robert Otterbourg helped me think realistically and practically about a career change. His advice allowed me to form reasonable expectations about what it would mean to change careers and to identify what was missing in my current work, how I could find that missing element and what was the cost of the change. The testimonies of the people he's interviewed covers a wide range of careers. Anyone interested in changing their field of work will be encouraged by "Switching Careers."

No man would put up with this kind of condascending advice or tone. Ms. Bodnar is bossy and abrasive and advocates positions that no self-respecting woman would or should take. Her voice is even worse. Instead, stick with the common-sense and good judgment in "Making The Most of Your Money" by Jane Bryant Quinn.
