      Book Description

This book develops a general 'logic', or heuristic of discovery, to explain the emergence of novelty in individual thought, organizations, industries, and economies. It draws on a variety of literatures, discussing theories of organizational learning, evolutionary and institutional economics, knowledge and language. It brings these together in a unifying framework, and applies that for an analysis of innovation systems and the management of learning. Unification is based on the resource or competence-based view in economics, in combination with a theory of learning by interaction. The central theme of the book is the relation between stability and change. In business literature this theme appears in the relation between exploitation and exploration. In evolutionary economics it appears in the relation between selection and adaptation. The general heuristic shows how exploitation can provide the basis for exploration. The analysis is illustrated with many phenomena and empirical results from the different literatures.

            Book Description

Based on case studies of four organizations that were sued for pay discrimination, Legalizing Gender Inequality challenges existing theories of gender inequality within economic, sociological, and legal contexts. The book argues that male-female earnings differentials cannot be explained adequately by market forces, principles of efficiency, or society-wide sexism. Rather it suggests that employing organizations tend to disadvantage holders of predominantly female jobs by denying them power in organizational politics and reproducing male cultural advantages. The book argues that the courts have, by uncritically accepting the market explanation for wage disparity, tended to legitimate and to legalize a crucial dimension of gender inequality.

            5 out of 5 stars what a great book!.......2003-04-15

This book makes the very important point (based on empirical evidence) that organizational and structural practices can result in pay inequality that becomes attributed to the "market." Further, this becomes "legalized" (or condoned in the american legal system) because the market is reified by judges and thought to be "natural" rather than socially constructed. The authors brilliantly demonstrate how this occurs in 4 organizations. This is why it has won every major award in sociology and law and society.

            1 out of 5 stars Good for nobody...unless you're a lawyer or an economist.......2003-01-15

I read this as a requirement for one of my graduate courses in Sociology and to be perfectly honest, a classroom full of well-educated people, open and willing to take in Nelson and Bridges' ideas could not make heads or tails of it, and that includes our professor! It is certainly bogged down with legal jargon which makes a lot of it very difficult and not very interesting to read. The conclusions were muddled and unclear which makes the reader question what the point was in the first place. Additionally, from a feminist's point of view, I have to draw in to question the motivation of two white males in writing a book about gender inequality in the workplace. Anonymity among social scientists has become an outdated relic of the positivist period and particularly in this case, prompts the reader to question what the writers have to hide.

5 out of 5 stars Must-reading on discrimination and labor economics.......1999-08-25

Fascinating reading, darkly hilarious in spots and an important challenge to orthodox labor economics and law--both of which assume that people's pay is set in "the market." As the authors point out, employers defending discrimination suits don't even have to prove this--it's just an assumption of the system. But the authors show that employers only encounter that "market" through intermediaries, the consultants and advisers who tell them what people are paid--and those people have their own biases, interests, and agendas. The authors carefully examine the records in some famous discrimination cases and show how unlikely it was that any "market" required that the maintenance men be paid more than the secretaries. Every labor economist and lawyer should read this book.

            Book Description

This module explains the architectural issues in building and deploying modern component-based systems. This is one module of an extensive handbook that systematically discusses how to translate e-business strategies to working solutions by using the latest distributed computing technologies. The chapters of this module show how solutions are architected by combining applications, databases, networks, computing platforms, and middleware services into a working system that delivers value to the enterprises. Topics include: a) principles of component-based architectures; b) the role of XML Web Services, Sun's J2EE, and Microsoft's .NET in building component-based architectures for enterprise applications; c) enterprise data architectures in the modern Web-XML environments; d) architecture implementation concepts through examples using XML Web Services, Sun's J2EE, Microsoft's .NET, and other platforms; and e) state of the practice (case studies), market (commercial products), and art (research and development trends) of component-based architectures. Chapters of the module also include several real life examples and case studies to highlight practical applications.

5 out of 5 stars Very Useful Treatment of Component-based Architecture.......2003-07-02

This paperback is just great! Umar gives a very practical yet thorough discussion of component-based architectures. The material is especially useful for IT managers and students in IS/IT. I really like Umar's style of defining terms and establishing a framework for discussion before discussing a topic. I wish other authors would do something similar. He uses the same style in all modules of this handbook. Every time I thought that the discussion was getting dry and an example could be useful here, guess what, an example appeared. The numerous diagrams and sidebars significantly add to the learning experience.

Even while discussing intricate topics, author's sense of humor shows (the discussion of good versus bad architectures is an example). The topics are well chosen and covered. The first chapter defines and explains different types of solution architectures, especially component-based architectures. The second chapter takes a closer look at business components and component-based architectures. I was really surprised, and delighted, to see a complete chapter on enterprise data architectures in the modern Web-XML environments. I rarely see this type of discussion in architecture books. It also shows the strength of the author in this area. The architecture implementation chapter is extremely valuable for developers because it shows several implementation examples with sample codes. The last chapter gives state of the practice, market, and art and rounds off this paperback very well. The chapters are long but they go through each topic completely -- several breakpoints divide the long chapters into digestable sections.

            Highly commendable work.

            3 out of 5 stars A Solid Effort!.......2001-04-23

Drew Field wrote this book in 1997 to encourage entrepreneurs to bypass Wall Street and float their shares directly to individual investors. In hindsight, we can see that almost everything that Field predicted in the book was wrong, but it is precisely due to the enormity of his mistakes that this book is relevant in the year 2000. Field's premise was that brokers were ignoring equity issuance and individual investors in favor of big-ticket, M&A-style transactions and institutional deals like securitizations. This shift had created an imbalance in which struggling entrepreneurs were cut off from the capital that they needed to get their businesses off the ground. Of course, what happed in reality was exactly the opposite: A boom in venture capital and the stratospheric rise of the IPO market created an equity bubble of epic proportions, and many start-ups that should never have made it past the garage door raised hundreds of millions of dollars. All of this brings us to the present day, when an IPO backlash has dashed the funding hopes of many public wannabes. To the founders of these companies, we [...] ask: Direct Public Offering, anyone?

3 out of 5 stars Solid Introductory Book.......1998-06-08

Considering how little has been written on the subject of Direct Public Offerings (DPOs), this book is a clear introductory text that is easy to read. As an entrepreneur considering a DPO, I am grateful for this book -- it convinced me that a DPO for our company will be successful! More than that, it convinced me there are a number of advantages to doing a DPO besides raising capital.

There are two caveats I would ask readers to keep in mind, however. 1) View this book as an introductory text. It does not contain sufficient detail to answer your every question, and no doubt, additional research will be required. 2) The author makes liberal use of trends and statistics, but many of the references are out of date: This seems to be typical of authors who rush to publish a subseqent edition of their earlier work, without going back and updating a lot of their detailed research.

Despite the draw-backs listed above, for anyone considering taking a company public, this book is a worthwhile investment at a modest price.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone considering a public offering........1997-07-26

Drew Field writes from experience gained through more than a dozen direct public offerings in which he has personally participated. The book lays out the required rules for a corporation to raise funds by selling its stock to the public. This is a complicated subject which Mr. Field simplifies to a workable set of do's and don't's. You'll understand the steps to follow to raise funds and which regulations must be adhered to for your selected type of offering. The most compelling portion of the book contains the case histories of actual offerings. Mr. Field will show you, through real world examples, what can work for you to acquire the funds you need for your business.

This is the perfect book for you if you know nothing about business and you want to learn the basics. I had to read it four times from cover to cover for a test, but I kept on finding new information each time I read it. Unfortunately, this edition has some outdated information about computers and credit card processing, but the rest of the book is pretty accurate. If you want to learn more about consumers, the government's role in the economy, and financial institutions, I would suggest using this as your basic reference book. It doesn't use complex language or strange jargon to explain things - it's perfect for the school or the office. There's lots of colorful graphs and pictures that really helped me understand the concepts presented.
