Customer Reviews:
This book is THE reason I passed the class.......2007-01-16
Last semester, I had to take a graduate level economics course having never even taken intermediate economics. (My program has weird requirements.) The book used in the class was Varian's Microeconomic Analysis. I can't say whether that was a good or bad book for someone with much more preparation. But for me, it was totally incomprehensible since I hadn't come across any of that stuff before.
On the recommendations of others, I checked out Nicholson's book, hoping it would give me the background needed to just pass the class. I found Nicholson's book to be disappointing, with many derivations stuck in footnotes. I should, however, mention, that the Nicholson copy I was given was of an older edition, so I'm not sure if the newer editions are better.
Anyway, I was feeling so desperate and by chance came across this book in the library. That day, my semester took a huge turn for the better. I finally could solve optimization problems! I finally understood the derivation of the Slutsky equation! Mathis and Kocianski explain everything SO clearly. Furthermore, they give you "cookbook recipes" for how to solve many of the problems you're likely to get on exams and homeworks. The problems I had to solve for homework and on exams were much more complicated, but the complicated part was in the details. The basic process to solve the problems was actually the same as the examples in the Mathis book. Once you master that process with Mathis's examples, you can generalize it to harder and more complicated problems.
Mathis and Koscianski also show you how the problem of the consumer is not unlike the problem of the firm, and problems of general equilibrium simply combine the two. In other words, they do a great job of showing the bigger picture while still teaching you the math involved.
Speaking of the math, this book requires calculus, unlike most intermediate textbooks. Yet the material is so clearly presented that I find the derivations to be easier to follow than in many intermediate textbooks. Furthermore, the authors don't unnecessarily complicate things by overloading on notation.
Very useful introduction to microeconomics using calculus.......2004-08-27
This is a very special book. Nowadays, most introductory textbooks on microeconomics teach intuitions and models that are carefully designed to avoid the use of even basic calculus as much as possible. This is not necessarily a bad thing because most college students don't have much calculus. However, for those that have even a basic understanding of calculus, there is a lot to be gained by studying basic microeconomics using mathematical tools.
This is the rare introductory text specifically designed to teach using calculus. This is refreshing and can be quite exciting for advanced high school students, undergraduates, and even masters candidates who would like to use math to be introduced to utility theory, consumer optimization, market demand curves, demand elasticities, short and long run production issues, firm optimization, short and long run costs of production, market structures including monopoly, issues related to input markets, and equilibrium analysis.
Really, the use of math here does aid understanding. The writing is clear, the illustrations are helpful, and the equations are quite understandable even if you only have calc 1 in your repertoire.
Take a look, I think you will like it and get real value from it.
Very good overview of microeconomic theory.......2004-07-01
When I took intermediate microeconomics I was assigned Microeconomics by Hal Varian, which from what I gather is the predominate book used by professors, however it shouldn't be. This book is a far better handling of intermediate micro than is the Varian book, or any others that I've seen for that matter. Most undergraduate books that I have seen shy away from using calculus to explain the theories, which is really unfortunate because calculus makes this fascinating field far less cumbersome and much more accessible. The first two chapters on reviewing calculus for economics are great and really help clarify the relevance of calculus to economics. I find that utilizing calc makes microeconomics a much easier field to understand and this book does that very well. The only complaint is that I have noticed a few errors here and there, like mislabeled graphs or a few misreferences to the wrong graphical explanations, but it is easy enough to realize from the context, it would be nice if these weren't there, but overall this is the best book for microeconomic theory I have seen.

Book Description
For every woman who works with men-an immediately empowering guide to rising above gender politics and succeeding in the workplace
Knowledge is a powerful tool. The Male Mind at Work answers troublesome and intriguing questions about how men behave on the job. This thought-provoking book shatters myths about what really goes on in the male mind while confirming for women the realities about gender differences that have always existed. It offers clear strategies for women who feel frustrated and confused because male colleagues speak a different language or play by different rules, and contains valuable truths about the male psyche so that woman can more effectively operate in the workplace.
By looking through this gender lens, a woman will gain a better understanding of the male perspective in order to network with men, manage a difficult male colleague, boss, or subordinate, and compete with confidence. The Male Mind at Work arms women with the power to use this knowledge effectively-without sacrificing their own identities and personal strengths.

some interesting if not earth-shattering observations.......2001-08-13
Though I didn't feel that there was any shocking bit of new information, I did enjoy reading the candid comments of many CEO's regarding their perceptions of women. No surprise that many are intimidated by the very smart women that have risen to their level. I did feel that at times the differences between men and women were exaggerated somewhat, but the author does provide helpful pointers at the end of each chapter that are meant to help the reader put theory into practice. Most interesting is the idea that many top CEOs cite graciousness at the top quality they think makes them a strong leader -- I think men have learned something from women here as women are more likely than men to share the credit. Humility and graciousness go a long way, both in the business world and out. A good read with some useful information.
Gender-Specific and Yet...........2001-01-06
Throughout eight chapters, Swiss suggests how women can "add swagger to their step, put on a game face, balance feminine and masculine traits, maneuver adversity and adversaries, cope with mixed signals and the great gender divide." She also offers reasons men why like working with women, secrets of strong leaders, and concludes with suggestions as to how to open "the gender lens. "Here is a woman's guide to working with men. (It could also serve as a man's guide to working with other men as well as with women.) Based on extensive interviews, Swiss offers some insightful comments and practical suggestions which, in this male's opinion, will help women to improve (or at least clarify) their relationships with men. Of course, not all men think and act alike; nor do all women. We all know abrasive and aggressive women as well as gentle and acquiescent men. Each possesses a unique combination of what are perceived to be masculine and feminine traits. Men and women often approach quite differently a broad range of career issues such as hiring and firing, conveying confidence, facing competition, participating on a team, building business alliances, saying "no" and setting limits, dealing with difficult people and difficult situations, managing and motivating others. Sound familiar? I agree with Swiss that there are certain "valuable truths about the male psyche" which, properly understood, can reduce (if not eliminate) problems many women have with that psyche in action. (Many males do not as yet understand, much less appreciate these "valuable truths.") This book will be valuable for anyone who seeks a better understanding of the male mentality, not only at work but everywhere else.
I really loved this book........2000-10-03
This book is incisive and helpful. As a woman in a male dominated field, I can attest that Swiss' advice is entirely on target. In addition to offering effective ways to succeed, it's also a good read. Very entertaining. If you are a women who wants to work more effectively with male colleagues--read this book.
A wonderful reference for corporate women!.......2000-08-22
This book is a wonderful reference for women who work with men, especially those in the corporate world. I work in corporate finance for a large, international corporation and there are very few women in my world. Reading this book gave me a great deal of insight on how men see work situations differently than women, and, by putting this knowledge to work, I've already improved several relationships. (By the way, I first read this book in a bookstore - spent the afternoon sipping lattes and reading - and am now buying my copy from Amazon.)

Customer Reviews:
Great for the Entepreneur.......2007-08-13
This book is exactly what the title describes itself as: a theory and method of creating a one page proposal. It's best suited for the entepreneur pitching venture capitalists. I got some ideas from it, but wasn't as helpful as I'd hoped for what I needed. One thing I'd have liked would have been a job aid/chart with the section titles and brief highlight of what to include.
Cut through the clutter. Get you proposal noticed and read........2007-08-07
It took just 2 hours hours to read. The instructions are simple (not simplistic) and easy to follow. The prescription will help you get your thinking clear. The one pager will get your message read and noticed. Decision makers - who are normally inundated with unstructured requests for their attention and support - will appreciate the format.
A range of examples show you how the concept has worked for the author and others.
A perfect solution .......2007-03-02
I stumbled upon this at the Chicago Public Library. After reading it and returning it I didn't think much of it. For some reason, however, it stuck with me.
After Amazon delivered it I remembered why it stuck with me: the concept is perfect for putting down just the parts of an idea or project you need to remember and those you need to convey. It is perfect in its simplicity.
I use this format extensively and find that it helps both me and the reader stay focused on the key points. I highly recommend both the method and the book. This, Tom Sant's Persuasive Business Proposals and Powerful Proposals by David G. Pugh and Terry R. Bacon may be the only books on proposal anyone needs!
Professional Proposals in One Concise Page!.......2006-12-12
Well, I'm done writing 10-15 page proposals that are just glanced thru. The One-Page Proposal provides a methodology to concisely present your complete proposal on one page. It saves you time in the proposal process and provides your potential client with a very focused proposal. I rate this one a winner and am now using this exclusively for client proposals. It works and it saves time!
The 1-page concept is good, but this book is not so good..........2006-11-10
...unless you have very little business writing experience. The 1-page concept is valid, but this book and its examples are unimpressive (and sometimes dull, naive and self congratulating). Still, it might be worth a quick read for some of you, which is why I'll give it 3 stars. Note: I probably should have given it 2 stars since some of these other reviews are so over the top positive that to me they are not credible (I almost think they were written by shills).

A no nonsense book on resume writing.......2002-03-07
I was fortunate to be in a Masters program at Georgia Tech and to have the opportunity to attend a session with Gayle Oliver as a guest speaker. If you are looking for the ultimate guide to writing a truly good resume, this is it.
GOOD DEAL.......2000-11-26
What a great deal, this is not only a book, but also includes an interactive CD. Having the CD makes all the difference, it allows you to prepare your resume and cover letter using the examples provided by the author. Why struggle through this process when you can do it so simply and easily right on your computer with the CD.
What a disappointment!.......2000-10-12
After reading all those stellar reviews, I couldn't wait until I received this book, hoping to find something new or different. Each resume in the book is virtually the same, the formats are all the same, and all the helpful hints are rehashed from resume books that have been on the market for years, and which are less expensive. I'm sure it is a coincidence that the author is from Georgia, and all those excellent reviews are from Georgia. Save your money! Nothing new here.
Great Investment!.......2000-04-05
My future's so bright I gotta wear shades! Thank goodness I found Execume! I was having a hard time getting interviews and decided to do a little research on resume writing. I followed the simple steps in the book and updated my resume into a powerful representation of myself! Many interviews followed. I was told that my resume stood head and shoulders above the rest and that I was immediatly chosen to come in for an interview out of 700 other resume's submitted. I landed an amazing job shortly thereafter! But the best part of all of this is that Execume helped me increase my salary by $15,000!
Best Resume Book I have ever found.......2000-03-08
Execume was purchased as a gift for my college age daughter. It is the single best book I have ever read on the subject.
Execume is different! The author is so positive. She helps the job searcher believe in himself/herself. The examples were great in fact the depth of entry level resumes sold me on the book. However there is plenty for everyone. The author provides numerous examples by profession and format.
I would recommend Execume as a great guide to develop a resume. I only wish the book were available when I graduated from college or last changed jobs.
