Book Description
Martha Vicinus's subject is the middle-class English woman, the first of her sex who could afford to live on her own earnings 'outside heterosexual domesticity or church governance.' She wanted and needed to work. Meticulous, resonant, original, triumphant, Independent Women tells of the efforts and endurance of this Victorian woman; of her courage and the constraints that she rejected, accepted, and created. . . . The independent women are the 'foremothers' of any women today who seeks significant work, emotionally satisfying friendships, and a morally charged freedom."—from the Foreword by Catharine R. Stimpson
"Feminist insight combines with vast research to produce a dramatic narrative. Independent Women chronicles the energetic lives and imaginative communal structures invented by women who 'pioneered new occupations, new living conditions, and new public roles.'"—Lee R. Edwards, Ms.
"Vicinus is to be congratulated for her brave and unflinching portraits of twisted spinsters as well as stolid saints. That she stretches her net up into the '20s and covers the women's suffrage momement is a brilliant stroke, for one may see clearly how it was possible for women to mount such an enormous and successful political campaign."—Jane Marcus, Chicago Tribune Book World
"Vicinus' beautifully written book abounds in rich historical detail and in subtle psychological insights in the character of its protagonists. The author understands the complexities of the interplay between economic and social conditions, cultural values, and the aims and aspirations of individual personalities who act in history. . . . A superb achievement."—Gerda Lerner, Reviews in American History
"Martha Vicinus has with intelligence and energy paved and landscaped the road on which scholars and students of activist women all travel for many years."—Blanche Wiesen Cook, Women's Review of Books
"Independent Women can be read by anyone with an interest in women's history. But for all contemporary women, unconsciously enjoying privileges and freedoms once bought so dearly, this book should be required reading."—Catharine E. Boyd, History

Filling an important spot in the Wrox Programmer to Programmer series, Beginning Active Server Pages 3.0 is an excellent introduction to the new version of ASP released for the Windows 2000 platform. This guide expects no previous ASP knowledge or even previous Web development experience.
Its friendly style makes this book welcome reading at all skill levels. The material is carefully presented to avoid losing readers who are totally new to ASP programming, yet it still provides impressive technical coverage, beginning with the very basic concepts behind ASP programming and moving forward to advanced coding techniques.
As each topic is presented, relevant screen shots and useful code snippets under the heading "How It Works" complement the text. The chapters also include step-by-step exercises to familiarize you with new techniques and tools. An extensive case study application takes you through the entire development process as well. If you're interested in Web coding Microsoft-style, this is the right place to start. --Stephen W. Plain
Topics covered: ASP language fundamentals, server- and client-side scripting, ASP object model, cookies, error handling, scripting objects, recordsets, transactions and COM+, XML introduction, ADO object model, and VBScript reference.

To get the most out of this book you should be running Windows 2000, which includes ASP 3 — the latest version of this popular technology.
Customer Reviews:
Great ASP book!.......2007-02-05
Beginning Active Server Pages is an all encompassing book on classic ASP web server development. The authors explain in great detail from the beginning on how dynamic web development works. No matter what technology you use (PHP, Coldfusion, JSP), how a web browser requests a page, the web server send the request to the server-side engine and/or does a database request and send the result to the browser. The book assumes no previous knowledge of web development and explains the basics very well so that any reader can start from any skill level.
The beginning of the book discusses what software you will need to get started which basically is either IIS (Internet Information Serve) or PWS (Personal web Server) in a Windows environment. How to install, test and configure the web server is discussed as well as setting up user permissions and virtual directories. This is a great starter to making sure the reader has all the information to get started on creating their first ASP web page.
The author continues explaining basic scripting techniques and language syntax of web scripting (VBScript) and explaining the differences between client and server side scripting and how the IIS engine interprets the request. Also covered early are the intrinsic ASP objects such as Request, Response, Server objects. A good review of some of the basic components of this very robust development technology.
The book then goes into send and receiving data from web forms in showing the reader some very useful but basic examples to get you started. The book covers in the next few chapters (4 - 5), in detail the basics of VBScript language such as variables, operators, strings, arrays, control statements (if, case, loops) and functions. The next chapter (6), goes into the concept of objects, methods, properties and events which explain to the user that almost everything is an object in ASP and the importance of this fact as well. Some OOP concepts such as encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism are reviewed with some nice examples.
The next two chapters cover many important ASP objects in great detail such as Response, Request, Application, Session, and Cookies. These chapters cover most of the most used objects that will be used in almost any ASP application. When you can master these objects you will have a great understanding of the fundamentals of ASP applications. The authors do a great job of explaining these important topics to the reader that it gives you more motivation to read more and learn more. Unlike other books that try to explain too much and confuse the reader, this book explains just enough in English other than techo-bable.
The rest of the book covers all types of database access using connects, recordsets, cursors, ADO, locking, filtering data, SQL syntax, and much more. Among other topics covered at the end of the book are focusing on advanced topics such as XML, Transactions and COM+.
The book is really all you need to learn and master ASP to develop dynamic web applications for yourself.
Excellent book for bringing you up to speed.......2005-06-24
Prior to purchasing this book I had no experience with ASP whatsoever. One day at work I was told that I needed to study up on ASP, and fast. I didn't really know where to start, but I ended up with this book, and it has been a lifesaver. I took the time to work through the examples in a select few key chapters, and was amazed that after only a couple of days I had developed the skills necessary for basic ASP development.
Now its been a few months, and the book still serves as a useful reference. It is extremely well organized. The examples are basic, but definitely teach the fundamentals needed to become a competent ASP developer. It will not make you an expert, but that's not its purpose anyway. It excels at relating the relevant information in an understandable and easy to learn format. For me to be developing with ASP in only 2 or 3 days is a testament to the quality of this book. I've never read a Wrox book before now, but I will definitely only purchase Wrox books in the future.
Excellent beginner book for web development.......2005-01-25
This book starts by giving an overview of how the browser, server, and pages interact to deliver web-based data and pages. The first 3 chapters, and the XML intro, are worth the cost of this book. I started this book with very little understanding of how dynamic web pages are delivered over the net, and am now ready and anxious to take on my first web development challenge. Can't wait to put the info in this book to use! The writing style is great also - very seamless and easy understand, even after 6 authors compile their knowledge into one volume!!!
One of the best introductory books ever.......2004-03-15
This text is so packed with information, it even goes beyond asp and introduces XML and COM+....so well written, so concise, publishers throughtout the country need to learn from wrox' writers on how to do technical books right! Every bit of code is explained in great detail, and while there are some errors, the website covers nearly all of them. Case in point: I won't be selling my copy back!
An Essential For Beginners.......2004-02-25
All programming books are both overwritten and underwritten.
When you begin reading and learning the content is simply too much. As you progress you find yourself seeking other resources for "filler" information.
I didn't realize until I grew frustrated with the book how effective it was. I had gone from a complete beginner to someone who could put together access driven web applications and I didn't even realize how far I had come.
I now have over 30 programming and database books that is use as resource guides for particular problems etc. Each book helps me get past a certain problem/hurdle. Like a lawyers library I couldn't proceed without it.
That is simply the nature of programming these days. We beginners often underestimate the amount of knowledge expert programmers have. The trick is to take what we can from each resource. In order to progress we must keep adding to the resource collection.
This book is the staple of my collection. I refer to it almost daily and as my knowledge base expands I find myself making better use of it.
So its a must for the beginner in my opinion. Whether you just want a foundation to take free script from ASP Programming sites, edit it, and add it to your projects or you are looking to chase a programming degree or career this book gets you rolling.

Lots of people who set out to deploy Microsoft Site Server aren't really big on network and Web site administration, they just want to get a good-looking, reliable site up and running as quickly as possible. Beginning Site Server 3.0 is the perfect companion for such Web entrepreneurs. It's easy to follow, but certainly not dumbed down. The authors (consultants and programmers of various stripes) know that the purpose of Internet commerce is to please customers and make money, not fool with technology for its own sake.
A large part of this book takes the form of storyboard-style procedures, in which the authors explain (with many screen shots) the steps for installing Site Server and use its (rather powerful) site-construction wizards to build a business-to-consumer Web store. It's an effective presentation strategy, leaving little to the imagination during the critical setup stages. The authors then make up for the limited flexibility of the storyboard approach by presenting detail-rich chapters on the databases that back up Site Server, as well as Pipelines, search facilities, and various extensions. The programming information here is good, but you'll probably want to supplement this book with one dedicated to Active Server Pages (ASP) if you have lots of custom work in mind. --David Wall
Topics covered: Site Server 3, Commerce Edition, including its installation, its relationship to Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 and 7, and its design principles. Detailed coverage goes to the Commerce Site Foundation Wizard and Commerce Site Builder Wizard, the database infrastructure of Site Server sites, Pipelines, content searches, and membership databases. On the programming site, there's interesting information on calling ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) from Active Server Pages.
Book Description
Site Server 3.0 is Microsofts attempt to provide a powerful solution for the needs of the business Web Site. It includes a wide range of management and administrative tools designed to make building and maintaining big web sites much easier. For example, it includes tools that map the whole site and details of the hyperlinks that link them, and allows a very fine granularity of administrative control. The main bulk of the package is geared toward providing developers with a framework for building high functionality web sites for a range of purposes. It enables the production of highly personalized content, tailored for individual members, and a fine control of the user experience. It also includes a package called Commerce Server that provides a framework for the rapid development of e-commerce solutions.
Customer Reviews:
Needs work.......2001-01-23
They ask you to create a Web Site in one way, and then after a while they say, if you haven't created your site this way, you might not get this result. Page 206 will ask you to create a Web Site under the Default Web Site. But on page 546, they say "For the purposes of this example, I will be using the Interknowlogy site that we have created earlier in this book......Also, this example assumes the site is am isnatnce of the Web Server and not just a virtual directory under Default Web Site". Author spends too much time for the Installation, but the installation instructions from Microsoft site is updated. The title should for this book should be "Teach Yourself Site Server in 3 Days"
Not much beef but worth the money.......2000-08-31
This title is a little short on content, especially considering approximately 170 pages is dedicated to Site Server installation under different conditions. The author's technique is basically to walk you through the various Site Server wizards, pausing to explain what is really going on behind the scenes. For these reasons, I was tempted to rate it just 3 stars. However, I reminded myself that this is a "beginning" guide with no pretense of claiming to be a comprehensive guide to the various Site Server features. Also, while the installation chapter chews up a lot of space, I found it to be very valuable. For example, during the Commerce Edition installation, a nasty "failure to register DLL" message appears. The author assures you that this is okay as it will be fixed later. I may have spent hours on MSDN researching this issue for fear of having an incomplete installation. I recommend this book for developers looking for an installation guide and/or a fast read describing what Site Server is all about.
Complete, Good for Beginners - Intermediate administrators.......2000-08-09
I read some other Site Server books before this one, including some in the Professional Series. I have been lightly involved with Site Server for quite some time but never in an extended use of the product.
I wanted to get an heads up on the Version 3 and this book contains it all for administrators. The Installation is the most complete I've ever found (containing 170 pages!) and it goes into all possibilities (i.e.: with/without SQL, NT 4, Win2k, SQL 6.5, SQL 7.0, etc.). Just the TOC for this one is in 4 pages!!! The book is worth it just for this chapter.
Then, the book goes to some extent into Pipelines, Commerce, Search, Personalization, and all the Site Server's components.
Once you will be through this book and need more information, I would strongly recommand the Site Server 3.0 Personalization And Membership, and the Professional Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition; both from Wrox Press.
Great book for beginners.......2000-07-11
This is a great book for beginners. I think the example in the book gives ample exposure to the various bits of Site Server 3.0 - ecommerce, personlization, analysis, etc. I would highly recommend it.
Simply the Best.......2000-06-16
I have not seen a better book that ties together as complex a development tool as this one is! I look forward to the next effort with version 4 of Commerce Server on the way

Printed in 1997 -- and it shows........2001-01-08
A word of caution: This book is not terribly useful for business travel in India. I spent 2 months in Delhi and didn't bother to check the publication date of this book. It is dated, to put it lightly.
There are a few useful tips in this little book (mostly about business/social interaction). However, I found that the main cultural differences in business were clear after the first week of being there--no book could have prepared me. India is an incredibly vast and varied country; no one general guide can smooth the transition.
If you're going to India to travel, the lonely planet or eyewitness guides will do you some good (really good if you're planning to visit out-of-the-way places). If you're going to India on business, then I'd suggest simply chatting with your Indian co-workers before or upon your arrival. Most likely they'll give you a better idea of what to expect; also, their advice will be tailored to your type of business and, more specifically, to the people with whom you'll be working.
As with all people and places--we're unique. Allow your Indian experience to be unique too.
Not too helpful!.......2000-03-02
Since India has a distinct culture from the US, I expected to receive some useful guidance from this book. It is very elementry - just remember to be polite and you will do better than you would by following this book's suggestions. Not worth the money or the weight in my luggage.
