The rapid ageing of societies in many industrialized countries threatens the stability of unfunded public pension systems. An immigration policy that accepts young workers would appear to be a simple solution to the challenge, by increasing the number of contributors to the pension system. Tim Krieger uses public choice analysis to investigate whether a majority of voters would pursue an active immigration policy in order to stabilize its unfunded public pension system.

Public Pensions and Immigration is a thorough and rigorous treatment of pension policy and international labor migration based on public choice theory, including an extensive discussion of pension policy in Europe and the challenges arising from increased labor mobility between EU member states. Tim Krieger reveals that the voting outcome critically depends on such parameters as the type of pension system, migrant qualifications and the possibility of return migration. He argues that the EU institutional framework, with respect to pension policy, cannot prevent harmful migration between EU member countries which is, in part, induced by differences in pension systems. In 1996 several female faculty members at MIT released a shocking report charging institutionalized discrimination at the university. They revealed some alarming facts: there were 22 women and 252 male faculty, and men and women of equal rank and seniority were routinely given disparate forms of compensation, all favoring the men, from better pay to more lab space to more research assistants. Well-Done Research Presented For Every Audience.......2007-03-14

Sue Rosser takes a very controversial issue (glass ceiling) and takes a look at it from the science in academia angle, an angle rarely taken with the subject of the glass ceiling. She presents studies done from 1997 to 2000 using samples from all across the academic science spectrum. Many branches of science fields are represented to include biology and physics along with all sorts of colleges and universities (from 2-year to 4-year to graduate schools).

Rosser's research reveals a good bit of information that may be overlooked by those in and surrounding the academia realms. If your a professor at any level, regardless of the subject you teach, or if your in an admin position at a college or university, this book is definitely for you. Also, if you are looking at entering the science industry as a professor or researcher, this book will shed a lot of light on the problems facing women within the industry and how many women have shattered the glass ceiling (to include Sue Rosser).

I did not like this book at all. I really struggled with the depth of the topics. There were no real stategies at all. The advice of dealing with a troublesome boss may be as simple as "win them over by working hard." I don't recommend it all. I bought it, read it that day, threw it away and ordered another book on managing your manager.

It's a tiny nice book, well illustrated, glossy paper.
It emphasizes working well with your boss, assuming that the boss is good and knows what he/she is doing. It does not tell you how to deal with an incompetent one, or someone who should not be a manager in the first place because of lack of people skills. The book contents do not match the title very well, does not tell you how to operate or manage your boss.
Overall it is a good book, leads you to nurture a positive attitude towards your work and your boss. It is an easy read and is worth the money.

I found this was an easy-to-read, easy-to-put-into-practice book. The information was to the point and could be utilized almost immediately. It makes an excellent reference book to have around the house for problem solving. I used the suggestions that were outlined for two hassles I was having. One with a car dealer and the other with a dry cleaning establishment. Both turned out well for me.

As traditional barriers to commerce among the economies of North America have come down, the remaining impediments have become more prominent. Antidumping and countervailing duty actions launched by each of the NAFTA partners against exports of the others are a notable example of this tendency. With the aim of promoting better relations through a clearer understanding of the economic challenges and opportunities within the NAFTA partnership, NPA's North American Committee has published this volume, which contains chapters by 18 authors on the use of trade remedy laws in North America. Many books have been written about the implications of a globalized and interconnected civilization. But few have the range and depth of Geoff Mulgan's Connexity. The central issue Connexity addresses is the fundamental conflict that exists between the freedoms enjoyed by many, mainly in the Western world, and the growing economic interdependence of so many more worldwide. First, this book is absolutely spectacular. Well thought out and thoroughly presented.

If you expect to interact with people and exchange information, you need to read this book. Being part of society is what makes societies and governments function. Without some level of connection/involvement between people, nothing would be accomplished.

Read and re-read... it will change the way you think, and even possibly make you a more enriched person...

Ambitious, but ultimately disappointing.......1998-12-30

This is yet another tome on how and why it's best for us all to live together on the fragile planet. His ancient thesis articulated, Mulgan (part of the Blair Braintrust in Britain) takes the scatter-gun approach to, well, just about everything--and nothing in detail. Mulgan's book comes off as more a Statist Apologia than an interpretation and explanation of "connexity." He grapples little with the forces of "connexity," such as the Internet, and what they'll make of decidedly Modern inventions (such as the welfare state). Instead, Mulgan argues that some governments really can have positive effects on their people. No argument there, but how does "connexity" impact the role of government? That seems to be what Mulgan is trying to answer amid the pretensions to technological and sociological expertise. "Connexity" comes off as well in some ways as Mulgan's greatest fear: in one place he declares that too much freedom is a very bad thing. Again, no argument, but it begs numerous questions--apparently too many for Mulgan to answer. If you really want to know what's going on in the connected world, read Wacker and Taylor's "500-Year Delta." It takes nothing as given.

Connexity presents invaluable and different tastes from the windows of Mulgan. While reading this book, you feel yourself in the jungle of real life.

Great read. Low on hype and long on rational thought........1998-06-15

Mulgan asks "are the achievements of freedom and the growth of independence compatible, or are we doomed to a classical tragedy in which our love of freedom destroys our capacity to be independent?" He then argues both sides of this question from an economic, sociological, and moral perspective.

In the end, the moral imperative of reciprocity (give and take, the golden mean) fuels his optimism for a self-organizing moral and societal order without the constraints of traditional methods of governance. However, Mulgan is no Pollyanna. He concludes with an optimistic view of the future tempered with a dash of realism. "The classical idea of progress as the unfolding of a grand plan or the expression of a higher intelligence is as doubtful as the much more recent faith that the world might have immanent properties that drive it towards complexity, integration, and self-organization. [...] There may be no destiny, and no certainty, nothing determined, only choices and chances. But life is all the better for that, because that is what leaves room for people to make their own history."

Mulgan's explanation of how we arrived at this point in the history of the world makes his analysis of the future more credible. For most of human history, a few traders linked the great trade centers but most economic life was local, face-to-face, and small scale. Larger social units were broadly defined and self-contained. Each unit could be mapped as a series of concentric circles of decreasing power radiating from the centers. Citizens at the centers of power were more cosmopolitan by virtue of their connectivity with other centers of power while residents of the distant regions were provincial.

The rise of rapid, economical, and global travel and digital communication (connexity) has reduced the hold of provincialism upon the outlying citizens and enabled a more cosmopolitan attitude to permeate throughout society. The trade networks and free-flowing information that liberated people f! rom the previous bonds of settled agriculture and industry produced a modern nomadic mobility. On the downside, connectivity promotes a sense of timeless time and of spaceless space that favors economic transactions over relationships and withdrawal from communities rather than staying engaged.
