Book Description
Since the end of the Kosovo war in 1999, increasing attention has been paid to the problems of economic development and reconstruction in South-East Europe. In a context of limited resources, small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) have a key role to play in creating jobs and building a dynamic entrepreneurial economy.
Small Enterprise Development In South-East Europe presents important findings from recent empirical research on key factors, which hinder sustainable SME growth in South-East Europe. Finance is identified as a critical barrier to growth, and the role of commercial banks, micro-finance institutions and credit cooperatives in assisting growth is addressed. Yet finance alone is not enough. A rebuilding of social capital, a reduction of the unofficial or grey economy, and the promotion of inter-firm networks and clusters are also of vital importance in promoting sustainable growth. The book concludes with critical analyses of SME policies in Albania, Croatia, and Macedonia, countries which hitherto have received little attention in the literature.
Small Enterprise Development in South-East Europe will be of great interest to policy makers, business consultants, and academics and post-graduate students working on economic development and reconstruction in South-East Europe.
Book Description
Nine Lives offers a candid look into the hearts and minds of nine extraordinary women business owners from around the country.
There is Judy Rosenberg who, on a perpetual diet, grew up with a gnawing, aching sense of deprivation. The cookies she coveted, the cakes she savoredall seemed just out of reach. So what did Judy do when she grew up? She started a chain of bakeries driven by her pure appreciation for that which is self-indulgent and beautiful.
And there is Rebecca Boenigk, the CEO of the only woman-owned business ever to trade on NASDAQ who found that the quarterly numbers "dance" wasn't to her liking and bought her company back from the public market.
"The stories the women told were awe inspiring, funny, mind boggling . . . and sometimes painful," Cantando wrote in the preface. "There were tough moments when the women opened up about still-raw details of their past
Yet, time and again, these brave women said that they were willing to swallow their discomfort if other women could learn from or be inspired by their struggles."
Customer Reviews:
Great motivation when you need it.......2007-08-12
Not long on concrete "how to" information this book should be seen as a motivational tool. It's a quick read but provides a view of personal success for women entrepreneurs that can be invaluable. I would recommend it to my own students as a companion to their business plan and financial literacy reading. It won't provide a road map for career success but for women and girls who need an infusion of hope it's worth the read.
a business of one's own.......2003-10-22
As Marsha Firestone, current President of The Women Presidents' Organization writes in her Foreword: "Women in the past century have made magnificent strides...[t]he women in this book are magnificent...because of who they have become. These powerful stories...encourage each of us to seek our own new sense of self..."
I wholeheartedly agree. Each woman's story will resonate with any Reader's own struggles -- starting from childhood, learning how to be an adult, a wife, a mother, a business woman & then, inevitably, the descent into the pit & the crawling back out. In sharing their stories they offer their greatest lessons on how to survive & thrive in the business world.
Highly recommended by RebeccasReads.
Especially for those women seeking to make their mark.......2003-08-11
Compiled by Mary Cantando with the assistance of Laurie Zuckerman, Nine Lives: Stories Of Women Business Owners Landing On Their Feet is an excitingly informative, evening inspiring, collection of personal experiences by outstanding female entrepreneurs who have braved both inner considerations and barriers as wells as economic, financial, and competitive obstacles in order to pursue their hearts and careers in successful and trailblazing ventures, ranging from the CEO of Neutral Posture, to the former missionary and current owner and general manager of JC Tec Industries. Nine Lives is enthusiastically recommended reading, especially for those women seeking to make their mark in today's challenging, competitive, and rapidly evolving business world.
Be encouraged to set high goals.......2003-07-10
This book really paints a picture of what it takes to own a business as a woman. It is encouraging to see that the struggles that these women went through were all worth it in the end. It has given me courage to never give up in busines and to set my goals high, despite the obstacles.
We make our own luck!.......2003-07-10
This book underscored my belief that we make our on luck! I love the story about the owner of Rosies Bakery in Boston...how she worked through the night and went to bed with flour in her hair because she was too tired to even take a shower...now she owns a chain of bakeries! And the "Queen of Barbeque" who got tired of being passed over for promotions in her male dominated industry...she just quit and started her own business. I feel like these women are my sisters, and I'm proud of them!

Good Business Ideas but Outdated Internet Ideas.......2006-02-16
Considering the publishing date, 2000, it isn't surprising to see that the internet has changed tremendously since then. While a lot of the advice can be applied to businesses as they strive to meet the needs of their customers, much of the advice about navigating the internet is very outdated. The main theme of the recommended business practices: Know your customer/audience and tailor everything toward them. That is excellent advice. The author recommends several ways to really get to know the demographics and needs of specific audiences and consumers. His advice about the internet is to use that information as the main guide in web development. He also recommends doing research on the competition and learning from them as well as finding a way to use their weaknesses. One company's short-comings can be another company's strengths. He made one thing clear--putting businesses on the internet goes way beyond simply creating a website. He discussed many ways to reach internet users with branded content. I would recommend the book for some of its business advice, but not for its web advice simply because so much has changed in six years.
Still works.......2001-04-04
This book has some key elements that can be used by alot of sites small and large. Although it may be a bit dated, it goes over elements that people are just learning how to use now. Developing microsites rather than web sites, avoiding banner ads, creating email campaigns, and building an online brand. It's a solid book with applicable elements if you know how to apply them to today's web.
No depth, out dated strategies and examples..........2000-06-16
I read through other peoples reviews here at Amazon.com and bought this book. But it did not meet expectations at all. If you are a first time net users or are planning to wet your feet in the internet space then may be this book makes sense. But, if you already know the basics and are looking for depth of knowledge, strategic thinking and effective implementation tools for good content management...this is NOT the book. The author probably worked for an ad agency when ad agencies did ' business stategy work'.... I strongly recommend Killer Content by Mai-lan Tomsen instead.
Brand Marketing.......2000-06-07
This is a great book that follows the classic rules of brand marketing and updates them for the new medium. It takes a step by step approach to planning, creating, and implementing an effective online advertising campaign. As the author notes, brand driven, bottom line oriented. After all, how can you go wrong with an intro by Leo Burnett!
It gives the how for a changing market........2000-03-09
The book works for business owners of all size. It lays the groundwork for the creation of workable marketing programs which can then be tweeked for each opportunity. Since I have yet to work in a business where everything deal is the same, it works perfectly.
I do like the way the author has sectioned out the book. I have a great deal of brand building and advertising experience, so I could skip to the area I was interested in without having to re-hash what I already know.
In all, a very good book that provides real information for the real world and examples of people who have already done it. Now, the more time I spend on the net, the more I see Mr. Cannon's ideas being used.
Well done...
Book Description
Written in highly readable layman's language, Fundamentals of Venture Capital is a concise introduction to the key issues facing both investors and entrepreneurs as they embark on the journey of turning a good idea into a profitable reality.
Customer Reviews:
Synopsis of VC Legal Issues.......2005-08-05
This book outlines the organizational and funding aspects of venture capital from a legal viewpoint for investors and company management. It does a good job of pointing out the basic legal issues for a non-lawyer. It is not useful for assessing a business venture's fundamentals or valuing a company. The author's website VC Experts is useful.
Difficult to use.......2005-04-21
I'm an attorney with many years' experience in the venture capital area. The content of the book tends to reflect East Coast practice more than West Coast (Silicon Valley) practice. That's not necessarily a flaw, but you should be aware that the styles can differ in some respects.
The style of writing though, is my major complaint about this book. In a word, it's pompous. Too many sentences have very complex, passive or impersonal constructions. Paragraphs are long and dense, without any concern for the reader's fatigue level.
Also, some quantitative concepts could have been much more clearly expressed with a simple formula (high school-level math). The discussion of weighted average antidilution protection at pp. 90-91 is a case in point. I found this impossible to understand when I first read it. The more I read it, the more obscure it became to me. It could have been described much more accurately, and in many fewer lines, with a simple fraction.
Clear communication didn't seem to be a priority for this author.
Basics to Venture Capital - The Legal Side of Things.......2003-10-11
Bartlett writes an informative book to those unfamiliar to the details to deal structuring, particularly with the documentation side. This book is truly for the novice who is unfamiliar with business and legal concepts. Those with a business or corporate law background may see this book as a "nice" reference source. If purchased, it's likely to be unused.
Individuals who wish to know the legal side of basic business structures, term sheets, business plans, and such would find the book resourceful. Though it's only 157 pages, it provides a foundation to the non-business professional.
This Book Needs to be Rewritten.......2002-03-06
Most of the other reviewers have said this book is NOT easy to read. I am another one of those readers. I want to be more specific WHY this book is so difficult to read. This book is supposed to be for layman. However the author uses terminology that would go over the layman's head. At the same time he skims and glosses over the details. So it sounds technical but it's not! What's worse, the readability of this book suffers from the use of tedious sentence structure and from unnecessarily high-caliber word selection like: atavistic, quixotic and salubrious.
I was disappointed in this book for more reasons than the readability problem. Chapters 3 through 7 cover the basics of starting a business. First of all these chapters don't belong in this book. As it is chapters 3 through 7 skim over topics that each belong in their own separate and adequately detailed book. Even if this book had been titled, "The Complete Guide to Starting a Business" it would have failed miserably because the level of detail is so totally inadequate.
This book is supposed to be about Venture Capital and that's all it should have discussed from beginning to end. This book is 160 pages long and yet the author only starts to get into venture capital at page 80. Again readability suffers, the detail isn't there, the line of thought is disjointed and the layman would be lost in the technical terms.
I think this book needs to be completely rewritten and revised. I have no doubt the author knows what he's talking about and that he has valuable knowledge to share. However, in it's current form, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. There's little in this book for either the layman or the seasoned professional.
A book that I would recommend to advanced readers is "Structuring Venture Capital, Private Equity, and Entrepreneurial Transactions : 2001" -- by Jack S. Levin. It covers tax and accounting issues in great detail and the readability is superb.
Quick Read.......2001-07-15
Given the overall complexity of the topic, I thought that this was an especially quick read. At the same time, it touched upon enough sub-topics and did so with sufficient detail to get a good overview of how VC approach new businesses. I did not think that this was the authoritative statement on any given point, but a solid primer. To the extent you need to know more about a topic, you should be well armed to research it further.
I encounted the book through a senior capstone course at a local MBA program. I was lecturing on a topic and saw the book on the syllabus.

Customer Reviews:
Entertaining & Insightful Book.......2007-06-10
I loved this book. It provides some great concepts that will stick with me. It does an especially good job of supporting some instincts I have about the world of business, and portraying them in a way that I am able to understand and adopt as guiding principals. Standing on your own two feet is an obvious one, but "The meek shall inherit the earth", appreciating interdependence and being coachable are also obvious principals to leading a good life. Mike makes those principles easy to relate to my work life.
This is what Mike taught me.......2007-03-18
I had the pleasure of seeing Mike in action when I had my last "real job". I brought him in to work with our Executive team and the whole process "XLR8ed" me to become a member of the "free agent nation", the popular term at the time. The recognition that I had many very positive interdependencies was the ultimate catalyst to overcoming my fear of staring my own Executive Coaching practice. That was over 10 years ago and my only regret is that I didn't do it sooner.
Mike basically taught me what he has now put in print, and I am carrying that message along with many steps of the process to my clients. As a matter of fact, since Thrive goes way beyond the concepts articulated in Rich Dad, Poor Dad I've sent it as a follow-up must read to my children.
This book makes a difference!.......2007-02-08
From the moment I opened THRIVE I was completely engaged. Mike Cook's writing style is warm and conversational, easy to read, and thought provoking. This is a must-read for anyone who wants to learn how to personally and professionally flourish and take a leadership role in their own life.
A must read for every working American.......2007-01-24
I am a workforce professional, employed at a local level to oversee DOL employment and training programs. I wish I could buy this book for every working American; and I recommend it whenever I get a chance, especially to young people entrying the workforce. The globalization of our economy is little understood by the most Americans. Mr. Cook makes a strong argument that these changes are here to stay but there are ways to more fully engage oneself in this global market. Is there a magic bullet? No, but Mr. Cook gives one the roadmap to participation. He writes with humor and humanity that I found very engaging.
THRIVE.... is must reading and practical for use in all parts of your life!.......2007-01-10
Mike Cook's THRIVE is a great "how-to-do-life" approach. It is must reading for all people whether a chief or cook or bottlewasher. Practical and witty....Wherever you are on your life's journey at any time, you can pick this book up and always get something out of it that is useful and if you choose to look in the mirror and be honest and use the information provided, you will be a better person for what you are trying to achieve in this world.....I have been fortunate to have been coached by Mike in my life and his influence and teachings have guided me to be a better person, leader, friend, coach, and philanthropist.....Read the book....See what you get out of it...."Now whatcha gonna do about it?!"....
Product Description
Falls and fear of falling are a major challenge to living independently.
According to an AARP survey 87% of adults want to age in their own home.
Statistics indicate that approximately one out of three adults over 65 will fall within the year.
Fall Prevention: Stay On Your Own Two Feet! increases awareness and provides solutions for age related fall hot spots.
Topics include balance, strength, posture, vision, medications, shoes etc.
To be effective in preventing falls we also recommend the companion volume, Fall Prevention: Dont Let Your House Kick You Out!
This book focuses on the other component of fall prevention; identifying and eliminating household hazards.
Customer Reviews:
Informative, engaging, and downright useful.......2006-06-30
This book is definitely a winner. Having spent a lot of time working with an older population, I'm always searching for a manual that clients will actually enjoy reading on their own. Oftentimes, coverage of this material is dry at best, which is unfortunate, because it is such an important topic. However, the team of Davies and Scully seem to write with the reader in mind--there are cute illustrations, it's easy to navigate, and the reader really learns a lot of simple exercises and techniques. I would definitely recommend it as a must read for anyone who has ever felt concerned for theirs--or a loved ones--balance, etc.

Customer Reviews:
Not Helpful, Not Funny.......2000-09-05
I read some of the reviews on Amazon and should have paid more attention. I knew not to expect a helpful book, but some of the reviewers said the book was humourous. NOT! There is no point or purpose to this book.
A light, funny read.......2000-08-27
Meyer's book is funny and well-written. Sprinkled throughout with tales from the author's own experiences, it is a fast and easy read. This book is best for the grad who has never lived on his or her own before, and probably too basic for those who had their own apartments, jobs and roommates while in college. While not a comprehensive guide, it does give good ideas on where to start. Don't depend on it to tell you everything, but count on it to give you a push in the right direction.
If I only had the money!.......2000-08-20
This book was interesting to see how rich people pretend to be poor. It's obvious the author doesn't know what it's really like to start out from school with nothing. My guess is she never ate macaroni and cheese 7 nights a week and wished she could afford peanut butter. She probably ate sirloin and wished it was porterhouse!
That's how this book made me feel. It assumes you have money and alot of choices. It doesn't help with the (limited) choices if you don't have a trust fund.
Disappointing.......2000-08-18
My daughter got this book as a graduation gift. She's still not talking to the relative who gave it to her. The title is misleading, beacuse there really isn't any information on how a young person can stand on his/her own two feet. The least of my daughter's worries is how to decorate her apartment. She needed more substantial advice on entering and surviving in the workplace, balancing a budget, setting priorities on expenses. This book offers none of that and was very disappointing.
Skip this Book!.......2000-08-14
As a guide, this book is useless. I was looking for sincere help on getting started after college. Instead, I got glib remarks that did not aid me at all. The author is pretty self-congratulatory on her success in life. But clearly, she was given more of a financial boost than the rest of us. The book has no substance and isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

Excellent Guide.......2004-11-22
This book served as an excellent roadmap for getting me out of debt and establishing some good financial habits that I didn't pick up in my youth. Not only was it insightful, but it was well written and engaging. I would recommend it for those just starting out on their own as well as those established who need to get back to the basics.
Totally helpful.......2001-07-05
The book is very down to earth and really insightful. I always felt the other books on personal finance were condenscending, but this one isn't. Its for people who already know what a checking account is, and dont need to read 4 chapters on how to drive to a bank. Its about time for a book like this.

Book Description
The Legend of HCA chronicles the exciting, sometimes turbulent story of one of America's most influential corporations. HCA's founding in 1968 started a revolution in the healthcare industry, not only in Nashville, where the company began, but across the entire country. HCA was one of the first investor-owned hospital companies in the nation. As such, the company pioneered an entirely new way of running hospitals. Over the years, HCA has been a leader in balancing and improving the nation's healthcare system. Today it is one of the most well-respected companies in the nation and arguably stands head and shoulders above other investor-owned hospital companies when it comes to policies, ethics, and quality healthcare.
