    Women are leaders too, and all women have leadership potential and abilities. This is the message of this new book by Joan Eleanor Gustafson.

    Some Leaders are Born Women tells the stories of 37 female leaders from different walks of life - so the book is easy to read, interesting and down-to-earth. It tells you how these women got their feet wet! and rose to the challenges within each of their lives, communities, businesses and families. The stories of these women ar wonderful and truly inspiring.

    Joan outlines the seven essential characteristics shared by women leaders in the world today and outlines the ways in which each of us can become more effective in our lives by building and developing the leader that already lives within us. Readers who enjoy self help strategies will find the advice here helpful and relevant.

    Although most of the stories are about American women, some come from other countries. I enjoyed discovering the commonalities in the stories despite the diversity of occupation and location.

    It is clear to me, from reading this book, the Joan Eleanor Gustafson is herself a dynamic leader and has a lot that is interesting to say about a topic that is still difficult for women to grapple with, acknowledge and own - that some leaders are born women!

      As an engineer with little financial background I found this book very useful for defining the financial jargon and helping me to develop spreadsheets for analysis of project cashflow. The text is concise and well written. The examples are clear and numerous. Geared for finance and real estate, the examples are easily transferable to allow the determination of a return on any investment that will have income and expenses.

      I just started graduate school and thought this book might help me overcome nervousness during the many presentations I'll have to do. This book offers very general tips for many different speaking situations (business, tv interview, etc.)and just a couple of techniques for controlling nervousness. If you're looking for a book that focuses more on controlling nerves and less on what color to wear or the perfect lighting for your face then you really should look elsewhere.

            This is a FANTASTIC book that I highly recommend because the tips, although many just common sense, will pay for itself in no time if you apply them to your life. Mark Miller writes in a conversational tone that allows you to get through the book quickly and then highlight (if its your own copy) many ideas that you can put to use in your life. Grab a copy from your local library like I did and if you agree this to be a keeper book, then get your buns back here to Amazon and buy a copy of your own. Or, better yet... trust me... and buy the book now while there are still bargain priced copies available. You will get your money's worth from this well written book; however, some of the information is outdated including the author's expired website. I give this 5 stars. I hope you will also!               According to T. G. Lewis, the rules of marketing are undergoing revolution--and those companies marketing in accordance with the old rules are doomed. Lewis defines a friction-free economy as one that assumes a zero production and distribution cost, with no competitors and infinite resources. A key component of Lewis's friction-free economy marketing is getting major market share fast, known as mainstreaming, as the company that becomes mainstream first becomes extremely difficult to dislodge. Lewis uses America Online as an example. He describes how the company flooded the marketplace with free access to its service and ended up with the lion's share of available consumers.               While Lewis's strategy is most visible in the computer world proper, Lewis also cites examples of businesses as diverse as fast food restaurants and car dealerships that are using the wired world to gain the friction-free economy advantage. These businesses focus on smaller groups of customers rather than broadcasting to the masses, giving away what other companies would sell and inverting the classic rule of supply and demand.               - A paradigm shift has occurred, and "The Friction-Free Economy" explains how the significant break with the old ways of thinking, and traditional economics, has affected a company's ability to compete in today's marketplace.

              - Discussed are ways to strategize, envision goals, and clarify objectives in the business/internet arena. - Ted Lewis presents complex subject matter in an entertaining way that I understand it more readily and in greater depth. I especially like his acumen and quick wit.

              - I enjoy watching trends in the computer industry, so I was fascinated to learn, the real underlying reasons, why Microsoft continues to issue new versions of a product. Also, I gained insight, on why a company would give their merchandise or services away for free. It's a discerning view on the how's and why's of what's happening, not in hindsight but as they occur in real-time.

              - This isn't for the casual reader, though. It's geared toward the astute, knowledgeable and serious businessman, who wants to "grow an industry".

              - To get the full benefit from this book, give a copy, to the key people in your organization and arm yourself with an economics book.

              Not only does the author carpet bomb with buzz phrases, he does not understand the difference between classical and Keynesian economics. He cites Keynesianism quite incorrectly, attributing to it concepts from classical and neoclassical economics. Scary to think that colleges pass this blunderation on to students.

              This is a good treatment of the rules of the new economy although the author tends to let enthusiasm get in the way of a careful writing style. I wish there were a few less cliches. The rules are changing for internet based providers and therefore for all economic units in society. The author may believe that the rules are changing more rapidly than other observers. I tend to think that Michael Murphy's book on technology based stock analysis covers a lot of the same ground and in a more effective manner.

              There were several intriguing points in the book "The Friction Free Economy," but none of the points were developed, supported or sufficiently documented. Lewis is an academic who presumably knows better; I think that he wrote this after long days at work, and it was never edited. The last two chapters are only a repeat of the first part of the book. I would recommend Grove's "Only the Paranoid Survive," Moschella's "Waves of Power," or Yoffie's "Competing in the Age of Digital Convergence" before this title- or Tapscott's "Digital Economy." Lewis just leaves you scratching your head, looking for the guts behind the fluff. It is an annoying book because of its laziness in supporting the potentially fascinating ideas. Lewis should rewrite it, and resubmit it to the public in a new form.

              I work for a Fortune 500 company, although we already market in the US to the Hispanic community, we strive to stay ahead of the trends. "Beyond Bodegas" was recently recommended to me by a fellow marketer who attended a retail conference where the author, Jim Perkins, had not only spoke, but also conducted a retail tour providing attendees hands-on experience within the stores. I'm sorry to say I missed out on the opportunity to attend. Skeptical as I am that there's much more to learn beyond what my company has accomplished, "Beyond Bodegas" -- with its excerpts to other companies' practices and in-depth insights to cultural sensitivities that impact a consumer's purchase decision -- proved otherwise. Extremely legitimate, relevant and timely, an excellent read for marketers in all phases of business. I hope to read more from this author.

              In Beyond Bodegas: Developing A Retail Relationship With Hispanic Customers, author Jim Perkins draws upon his affinity for Spanish culture as well as his many years of experience working in the retail business in Mexico and the United States to offer seasoned, practical, tested advice to materially assist retailers of all kinds to learn more about what their Hispanic customers may expect from them. Such retailers are provided with strategies to attract Hispanic customers ranging from creating a store-within-a-store, to stocking known Hispanic brands alongside their U.S. counterparts, to making certain their signs are in Spanish and a bilingual staff is on hand to assist their Hispanic clientele. Also covered in detail are Hispanic brands, elements in creating warm and friendly exteriors and interiors, the importance of faith and religious holidays in the Hispanic community, and the necessity of making a commitment to the Hispanic community in order to be successful marketing to an Hispanic customer base. In the content, it is very systematic to accumulate and practice the same concept for different cases. It enlarges the view of the consumer behavior.                         I bought "A Guide to Doing Business in Japan" in preparation for an upcoming. month-long business trip to Japan. Having been to the island nation once before, I figured that a little brush-up on etiquette, practices, and customs couldn't hurt. This wasn't the book for that, however. "A Guide to Doing Business in Japan" is focused on helping those who want to set up businesses in Japan, not those who visit. It is very easy to read, but the information is only centered around legal issues, real estate practices, descriptions of the business calendar, and like topics. There is little to be gained here for a short trip on business.

                        Additionally, the book has become quite outdated. Published in 1996, it fails to cover any of the situations brought about since the Asian economic crisis and Japan's own banking system failures. It is in bad need of a refresh, and even more so a re-titling. Casual business travelers would be better off buying one of the tourist-oriented guides to Japan that demonstrate how to deal with it's people and culture.
