What is the effect of a "nation"? In this age of globalization, is it dead, dying, only dormant? The essays in this groundbreaking volume use the arts in Mexico to move beyond the national and the global to look at the activity of a community continually re-creating itself within and beyond its own borders.

Mexico is a particularly apt focus, partly because of the vitality of its culture, partly because of its changing political identity, and partly because of the impact of borders and borderlessness on its national character. The ten essays collected here look at a wide range of aesthetic productions—especially literature and the visual arts—that give context to how art and society interact.

Steering a careful course between the nostalgia of nationalism and the insensitivity of globalism, these essays examine modernism and postmodernism in the Mexican setting. Individually, they explore the incorporation of historical icons, of vanguardism, and of international influence. From Diego Rivera to Elena Garro, from the Tlateloco massacre to the Chiapas rebellion, from mass-market fiction to the film Aliens, the contributors view the many sides of Mexican life as relevant to the creation of a constantly shifting national culture. Taken together, the essays look both backward and forward at the evolving effect of the Mexican nation.

A book you can relate to..........2001-08-18

In her book, Elaine Grudin Denholtz interviews Jewish women in different stages of their working lives. Some are married, others are struggling to raise children without a spouse...some are career defined, while others are focused more on their families. I ordered this book because I am a Jewish woman, in an intermarriage, who is thinking of having children, and possibly keeping my career (atleast part-time). Quite simply, I wanted to know how other women did it. This book gave me an array of interesting perspectives, some I could relate to, but others lead very different lives. However, there are aspects of this book that affects all women, no matter her culture, or religion. So I would recommend this book, not only to women of the Jewish faith, but to any woman balancing work and love, just as the title suggests.

Solid business simulation.......2006-02-14

I've used this simulation for several years. You really have to dig into it to fully understand how it works and there are some warts in the game. The trip is worthwhile, however, in terms of student learning of diverse topics from financial accounting to logistics. Playing the game takes a lot effort out of the instructor - but I think it is worth it in the end.

You must understand this to use it!.......2002-12-07

I must disagree with the other reviewer! I use this simulation in my class and it works very well. However, it isn't simple and the base documentation isn't the best. The software is quite robust. The complexity of the simulation means this isn't just a game in which you can casually drop in some figures and see what happens - each team needs to spend at least 8 hours preparing and then about 2 hours deciding each set of moves! The reward is in simulation that faithfully reproduces and simplifies competitive and global forces.

NOTE - this software is totally useless to you unless it is offered as part of a class. You need at lest three teams AND the special administrator software only available to teaching professionals.

As a project in one of my MBA classes, we had to make 8 decisions in this "simulation" game. Over the semester, I have grown to hate the game and the book. The biggest problem with the game is that it is too rigid and does not mirror real life. The problem with the book itself is that it does not contain any information to assist you in making decision. There are also some misprints in the book as well. Avoid this book if you can, and if you can't, I wish you the best of luck!
