See Jane Win is a parents' guide for turning girls into happy, successful women. Child psychologist Sylvia Rimm, along with her daughters--a research psychologist and a pediatric-oncology researcher--spent three and a half years collecting data and conducting interviews to devise the 20 basic points detailed in this book. Their conclusions were based in large part on a detailed questionnaire completed by over 1,400 women with successful careers in a variety of fields, including science and technology, media, the arts, medicine, law, and education. (Homemaking and volunteer work do receive some token attention, but there is a clear professional bias in their definition of success.) Their goal is to "identify the essential childhood elements that encouraged these women to achieve fulfilling careers" in order to alert other parents to them. In this, they achieve their aim. See Jane Win is well organized and informative. Even if some of the advice leans toward common sense, the combination of professional opinion and personal experience is an effective one, animating statistics that could otherwise be as dry as chalk dust.

In the Rimms' findings, education emerges as the key common denominator. High academic expectations, good study habits, strong math and science skills, and a love of reading (no television!) are all stressed. They also encourage parents to resist the urge to overprotect girls, and recommend fostering a healthy love of competition in order to build self-confidence. Indeed, self-esteem is a major underlying theme of the book. The authors discuss in detail how to combat eating disorders, social insecurities, and the negative image of women often portrayed in the media.

Overall, this is a useful compendium of sound advice and enlightening case studies that ultimately serves to underscore one vital point: Parents do make a difference. Sugar and spice are certainly nice, but See Jane Win offers a more substantial recipe for the raising of daughters. --Shawn Carkonen

    Book Description

Noted child psychologist Sylvia Rimm, along with her daughters, a research psychologist and a pediatric oncology researcher, conducted an extensive three-year survey among more than one thousand satisfied women who have achieved success in their careers. She explored in depth these women's childhoods, adolescences, and young adulthoods, noting what the women had in common and culling from her findings important advice on how parents can give their own daughters the same advantages.

Based on extensive original research, See Jane Win provides invaluable advice for helping girls deal with such issues as middle-school grade decline, math anxieties, eating disorders, social and academic insecurities, feelings of being different, self-esteem and competition, the career-family balance, and the glass ceiling. Included are profiles of seventeen women in disparate careers that illuminate the rewards and penalties of linear versus delayed career patterns and show us the typical pathways for women in specific fields, including medicine, science, law, business, education, politics, and the arts.

Despite the many victories of the women's movement, little girls are still given negative messages about their potential and prospects. Dr. Rimm shows parents how to combat those messages and give their daughters the confidence and skills they need to follow in the footsteps of the successful women surveyed.

4 out of 5 stars Every mother needs to read this book.......2007-04-07

When I found myself in a position of having custody of a 13 year old with discipline problems, I searched for answers on how to help raise this young woman and make a positive impact on her life.

The qualities of the successful women that Dr. Rimm researched is what I aspired to influence this young woman.

With failing grades when she came to my home and with a low self-esteem, she left with grades of all a's and b's an increased self esteem due to my challenging her by using the ideals spelled out in this book.

    4 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2003-05-28

This was an extraordinary book, very insightful. It let me know things are still possible and that dreams come true. This book tells you about other people that are very similar to yourself. The great thing about this book is that it displays all aspects of life. This book is definitely on my bookshelf.

4 out of 5 stars A fascinating book --with one caveat.......2002-09-01

There are many great stories in this book and lots of advice for mothers. However, Rimm's definition of success is very much career-oriented, and what bothered me is that many women admitted they, looking back, didn't spend as much time with their children as they should have, some really not around at all. To me this means you are NOT successful. I would have liked to see more "success" for those with children as tied in with being a wonderful mother too

    4 out of 5 stars Interesting study.......2001-08-03

I enjoyed reading about the examples of resilience, tenacity and perserverance these women displayed.

1 out of 5 stars Questionable Science Poorly Reported.......2001-05-29

If the word "perhaps" didn't exist, Dr. Rimm could never have written this book. She appears to have reached the conclusions and then decided to interpret each case to fit. Her very definition of success is awfully elastic, ranging from highly driven careerists, a few who appear to have blundered their way to success, and an especially vapid TV anchor. The data collection itself is suspect, as she seems not even to have requested transcripts and report cards from her interviewees, but instead relied on their own reporting of events which could be as much as 50 or 60 years in the past. There is a slight suggestion she may have conducted secondary interviews with the mothers of a few of her interviewees. Finally, the entire book drips disdain for both homemakers and women in "traditionally female" jobs, which is not particularly helpful and frequently very off-putting, even for those not included in those categories. The advice found here is very basic and more readily found in other books. Look elsewhere for it, and save yourself the headache.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal on the Real World !!!.......2003-08-02

Awesome!!! Too many career books for people starting out are out of touch or patronizing, but JobSmarts tells it exactly like it is. I used it to help me get a job during my senior year, and now that I'm working I still rely on it to get me through things at work. Get it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Recent Grads.......2003-07-24

As a recent college graduate with a degree in communications I felt confident that I would find a job immediately upon graduation. Unfortunately with today's economy I was told again and again by companies that they were on a temporary hiring freeze but would "keep me in mind". A friend of mine recommended this book to me. Upon reading it I was inspired to keep trying and to work hard to make myself stand out among the other applicants so my resume didn't fall through the cracks. I think this book is a great resource for any recent graduate entering the job market.

4 out of 5 stars Terrific book for young career minded people.......2000-12-27

This book has helped me quite a bit. It reinforced conventional career wisdom like "treat everyone well" and "accept any position to get in the door." The book also gave me new ideas. I began reading more than the local newspaper because of Bradley and this has made me a much more educated worker. He recommends reading the Wall Street Journal and USA Today everyday. He also gives lots of credit to those who came before him and I really like his reading list at the back of the book. I read many of those books which also turned out to be terrific for me and my career. Scratch that - it has been terrific for my entire life! Get this book now. It is well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars The Must Have Guide for Twentysomethings.......2000-05-28

Bradley Richardson is the career guru of a generation. This book is the most helpful guide to careers ever written. It should be a required text for every college student. I can't even express how this book helped to give me direction during one of the most confusing and overwhelming times in life. I have actually been upset that it is not found on every "bestsellers" list of career books.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly written, little value, save your money........2000-04-17

If I could give this book zero stars, I would (but the Amazon system goes from 1-5 stars). The book is written with a smug "I-know-it-all" attitude that doesn't convey anything to the reader other than that the author thinks very highly of himself. There is little if anything in the way of practical information I was able to use. Most of it consisted of "this-is-how-I-got-a-job-and-you-can-too!" Very petty and poor writing style. I bought the book and wished I handn't--I won't even waste space on my bookshelf for this one, lest I later forget the awful content and waste any more time reading it. Save your money.

I found this book very interesting and practical. The chapters that one will find beneficial is the various web sites where you can find bargains on various products such as carpeting, furnishing, etc. Also the author gives good advice on how you can reduce your energy costs such as using cold water for the rinse cycle. There is also good information on how to buy a used car. The author does not believe in buying a new car.

I have been practing alot of the advice that he is providing and did not find anything new for myself. Alot of this information is available online for free. In many cases he does not go far enough there are alot areas that were never covered. Save your money.

In 1877, university professor Carl von Linde obtained a patent for his refrigerator from the Imperial Patent Office--a patent for something that was not merely an invention, but the result of serious research in the basic laws of physics. Linde went on to found the Linde Company, one of the biggest German Gas and Engineering companies which became one of the models for science based industries. Today, the Linde Group, headquartered in Wiesbaden, Germany, is a global technology company dedicated to gas and engineering, material handling and refrigeration. This book examines the history of this company in the context of the history of technology in industry.

This book was written during times of inspiration and reflection as I served as a Military Contractor and a "Fisher of Men" in the Country of Iraq. The Collection was written during times of praise, worship and discernment of God with fellow men and women there; where we prayed, worship and share collectively in the Body of Christ. This was indicative of some of the trials and tribulations that we face daily together in unity of the faith while completing our each and own individual mission there. We were all one in the unity of the spirit of serving Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior and our country. We have established ourselves to War on two fronts during our missions there one in the spiritual, the other in the physical.

"David Schnebly, a man whose long experience transcends diverse segments of the technology spectrum, tells a comprehensive and realistic story of aerospace, and related research and development management.

His wide Glimpse of the high technology R & D world and his frank presentations on key issues surrounding that arena, reflect a true appreciation on the intricacies and pulse of the industrial R & D activities.

Although the book casts a critical eye on government procurement bureaucracies and their methods, as well as on the current industrial merger trends, it also reflects on the basic differences between government and commercially sponsored research and development. The stories contained in the narrative depict how it really is in the R & D world.

Although not a textbook, 'A Greenhouse Anthology' lays out sound guidelines and techniques for the management of R & D; a subject rarely addressed in the management literature."

I was crew chief on the Army-Lockheed YO-3A in Vietnam 1970-71. The 9 planes operating in Vietnam were silent and only operated at night. They were never shot down or took a round. This will come as a surprise to many, but the YO-3A had a 2nd generation NVAP (night vision scope,) infrared illuminator and a laser target designator. Non of these aircraft ever took a round or were shot down in 14 months of operation during the Vietnam War. This was the only Lockheed Missiles and Space Corporation airplane ever built. It was also the only airplane that was built specifically for the U.S. Army. After Vietnam, 2 of the planes, 006 and 007 effectively operated for the Louisiana Wild Life and Fisheries to nap illegal shrimpers. The planes were then acquired by the FBI and were used in the Patty Hearst case and other kidnapping and extortion cases. NASA still operates one YO-3A for rotorcraft acoustic research. YO-3A 69-18007 is undergoing restoration to flight status at Cable Airport, Upland California. Check out these websites for more information: www.yo-3a.com, www.prizecrew.org, www.quietaircraft.org

                  Book Description

Postimperialism is a theory of political and social change inspired by the explosive growth of transnational corporate enterprise during the latter 20th century. Its foundations are derived from two primary sources: political theories of the modern business corporation and class-analytical theories of society. However, the postimperialist theory of class formation is predicated on power relations, a departure from conventional class analysis that renders the theory applicable universally to countries at different stages of economic development. Postimperialist thinkers contend that the formation of a global bourgeoisie, resulting from transnational class coalescence, coincides with the evolution of institutions and public policies that are compatible with socialist as well as capitalist principles. This book provides theoretical contributions to postimperialist theory as well as case studies of both individual countries (Britain, Cuba, the United States) and regions of the world (Africa, postcommunist Europe). It also contains historical analyses of the origins of postimperialist thought in Mexico and the United States. Topics considered include the transfer of cultural and ideological values, multilateral legal responses to transnational oligopolies, the problems of predatory corporate behavior and perceived neoimperial threats, working-class responses to the challenges of transnational enterprise, the effects of resistance to market-based economic reforms, opposition to imperial spheres of influence, and postimperialism's contributions to theories of international politics.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for learning more about managing multicultural organisations........2006-08-28

This is an excellent book for learning more about managing multicultural organisations. Already in its second edition after being first published in 1995, it has improved. The COM or Cultural Orientation Model integrates all the cultural dimensions of famous authors Hofstede, Hampden-Turner and Trompenaars, Stewart and Bennett/Rhinesmith, Kluckhohn and Strondtbeck/Hall and Edwart Hall into a cartwheel.

Though the authors are very much pro-convergence (even claiming in Chapter 1 that Global harmonization of consumer buying preferences will dominate certain industry-goods and services-sectors.) as to Globalization they manage to build up a comprehensive argument about the high role of culture in the process of organizational globalization.

Busy international managers could find the approach of breaking the complexities of cultural differences into value orientations a bit theoretical in the absence of case examples and critical incidents. There are some good case studies in chapter 4:A Survey of Cultural Patterns but there are too few of them in the whole book. In fact more of these would have helped in getting a vital point accross that cultural boundaries are not national boundaries. For people involved in designing performance management systems and strategic planning in multicultural organisations this book is highly recommended reading. HR-practitioners in multicultural organizations would also benefit from reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Which type is to become a global manager?.......2001-01-22

Recently I wrote a book about multinational management published in 1968. After finishing this book, I realized that the conflicts between multicultural and multinational difference are stands still under the similar managerial circumstance, though we are living in the digital-dominated world. So I studied this book compared with its' phenomenon as described in "International Management". Keeping a flexible communication skill in multinational-cultural is the key factor to achieve meaningful outcome. For this, the open-minded, instructive and far-sighted personality required first. When they acknowledged difference not wrong each other, they can start to talk about what they want for negotiation, next proceed to persuade or yield a little. This means the more internationalized people there as a matchmaker, the more the company benefited from them. Then how to get Mr. Right for global manager? They all born naturally? Or trained? Both are all right. Person who has got global brain with digital management skill (as Mr. Bill Gatz called) must appeal to adapt extreme change and more action to cope with international risky problem. They could continue to get or lose by trial and error and learned what's the best, step by step and case by case. There are no standard learning system to teach them. That's not the lost rather than investment for human resources for each company ultimately. If you are would-be-global manager or second-rate reginal manager or have a dream of international manager, read this book and write down and analyze what's your strong/weak point more carefully. Then take into action to the first-rate global manager. If anyone who is in a top-management read, they can set effective multinational goal to come and get. How about students or average person? Of course, they will be fine.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable guide to building a successful worldwide company........1998-10-11

This book should be on the desk of every marketing and human resources manager involved in foreign trade. It is not only for larger companies that have already built a global sales network. It is also for beginners who should consider these cross-cultural factors BEFORE they start selling their goods and services in overseas markets. John R. Jagoe, Director, Export Institute.
