Finally, the followup to Vol. 1.......2007-01-16
This is a followup to volume 1 of the Cherrypickers guide. It includes many newer items such as the two varieties of the Wisconsin 2004-D quarters that sell for a three figure sum. The varieties listed are coins that might be found in circulation. This volume covers coins from 10 cents and up. Volume 1 handled the lesser face value coins. The downside to this reference is that a microscope is required to find many of its "cherrypicked" coins. It is, however, a useful reference for the more advanced coin collector.

This 4th updated edition represents the 2nd volume: it covers half dimes to modern dollars, gold, commemoratives, and packs in the black and white photo close-ups of marks and dies which make identification of smaller marks a snap. Reviews of collector holdings, varieties of coins, and discussions and arguments within the collecting community over the cause of marks enhance a lay-flat binding with spine lettering perfect for frequent consultation or library shelving. This is a great book if you are interested in collecting die varieties. The section that describes the difference between doubled dies and machine strike doubled dies is incredible with lots of great pictures. It will definitely help you in determining between the two. Highly recommended! And I suggest getting the other Cherrypickers' guide (nickels, etc) too.

This is a better that average book if you are interested in looking for what to look for in a fake coin. There are descent photos and information on tell tale signs. There is no real model to tell you of any specific markings to determine if it is a genuine coin, just what to look for in a fake. Better detail, die marking information and die pairing would have made this a great book. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in stepping into the gold coin market.
A must for the raw gold coin collector.......2007-06-13
As a budding gold coin collector, this book is a must have. Currently, I have 4 gold coins in my collection. Two have been graded and are genuine specimens, one was returned counterfeit, and one I have yet to send in. Now, I have a guide to help me screen my coins.
The picture quality alone of the coins shown in this book makes it a buy. They are most helpful in showing you what to look for. Having only heard of the "Omega Man" up to this point, there are a few of those coins pictured in the book.
If only the grading service I use would return coins telling you what makes it a counterfeit like the book shows you.
I rated it at 4 starts because I think there should be more than the 200 pictures. Also, more info on the "Omega Man" and other history of counterfeiting would be nice to have. When was the first "Omega Man" coin discovered?

Engaging conventional arguments that the persistence of plantations is the cause of economic underdevelopment in the Caribbean, this book focuses on the discontinuities in the development of plantation economies in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic in the early twentieth century. CŽsar Ayala analyzes and compares the explosive growth of sugar production in the three nations following the War of 1898—when the U.S. acquired Cuba and Puerto Rico—to show how closely the development of the Spanish Caribbean's modern economic and social class systems is linked to the history of the U.S. sugar industry during its greatest period of expansion and consolidation.
Ayala examines patterns of investment and principal groups of investors, interactions between U.S. capitalists and native planters, contrasts between new and old regions of sugar monoculture, the historical formation of the working class on sugar plantations, and patterns of labor migration. In contrast to most studies of the Spanish Caribbean, which focus on only one country, his account places the history of U.S. colonialism in the region, and the history of plantation agriculture across the region, in comparative perspective.
