    Book Description

The Nature of the Farm is a theoretical and empirical study of contracts and organization in agriculture based on the transaction cost framework. Transaction costs are important in agriculture because nature (for example, seasonality, weather, pests) plays such a critical role in determining output and limiting the ability of farmers to specialize. The book develops specific models and tests the implications of those models against data sets from across North American agriculture, as well as against historical case studies such as eighteenth-century European land contracts and the late nineteenth-century Bonanza farms in the United States.

The book is organized in three parts. Part I examines the classic question of what determines the optimal choice between fixed rent and cropshare arrangements, concluding that it is determined by a trade-off between incentives to overuse rented land and incentives to underreport shared output. Part II tests several predictions derived from a standard risk-sharing model of contracts and finds little evidence that risk sharing is important in contract choice. Part III extends the transaction costs analysis to broader organizational issues. It introduces seasonality and timeliness costs as forces influencing the gains from specialization and the costs of contracting, and finds that farm ownership and farm organization are routinely shaped by these forces.

          Book Description

A survey, undertaken specically for this book, shows that 40% of women earning $50,000 or more a year are childless at age 45. So why is the age-old business of having babies so very elusive for this generation of high-achieving women? Why is it that all the new power and prestige does not translate into easier choices on the family front? It seems that women can be astronauts, CEOs, Secretaries of State, but increasingly, they cannot be mothers. Sylvia Hewletts powerful book looks at the hard and disturbing facts and goes on to advocate a new way of approaching the question of motherhood vs. career for a new generation of women.

5 out of 5 stars Life-changing truth that young professional women need to hear.......2007-07-11

This book deserves much higher ratings than it has on this site. Whether you want to believe it or not, this book says it like it is. Those who don't agree with what it says are either in denial, or they will find out the truth later at their peril.

As for me, I read the first edition of this book as a young student at Harvard, in the Coop bookstore at Harvard Square (never even bought the book!). I found it to be extremely accurate - it jibed with the reality I saw all around me.

After I entered the corporate world in Manhattan, I often remembered this book, and what it said was confirmed all around me. I worked with many of the childless (and single), older professional women that Hewlett speaks of - one of these had a child by sperm donation. The fate of these women seemed doubly unfair because the older professional men in our corporation were invariably married with stay-at-home wives...one of them had even "imported" a young, beautiful wife from Russia.

I finally decided that I would not become one of these older, childless and single women in my corporation. I quit my job and moved out of Manhattan, where finding a job with "normal" hours was near impossible. Three years later I was married to a wonderful man - and now, just entering my 30s, we are trying for our first baby. I am ever grateful to Sylvia Ann Hewlett for this book, which got me thinking, and helped me to transform my life so that I will have no regrets.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all women.......2007-01-21

I have recommended this book to friends of all ages and all carrer types. Everyone has loved it!! It is one of the only books i've read that really begins to investigate the socioeconomic impact of career women choosing not to have children (or having them much later in life). The author acurately captures the emotional, economic and social pressures that women face 30 years after the initial "women's rights movement" began. Her analysis is objective and thoughtful and should be read by all women and all parents with daughters. This book celebrates the successes of the women's movement, but also examines the new problems created by it and offers corrective solutions.

5 out of 5 stars Read it, my dear sisters!.......2006-11-18

Going throuth the burning desire of wanting a baby and now 9 months pregnant at age of 38, and seeing my friend struggling to try to catch the last train with her own eggs at very low success rate at age of 41, I urge all my sisters read it.

If you gave up children for your career, you are not qualified to review this book. If you gave up a career to have children, you are not qualified to review this book. This issue is far, far too fraught with emotion for anyone who falls into these two categories to provide an unbiased analysis of the material this book covers.

If you gave up children for your career (especially if some part of you regrets your decision), you are probably going to be very hostile towards the author's assertions and very defensive of your own lifestyle choices. On the other hand, if you are a mom and part of you regrets giving up or delaying your career (or even if you are wholly content with your decision), you are probably going to loudly trumpet the author's wisdom and hail her as a champion for women who choose a "traditional" lifestyle. The sad truth is, women (especially those who don't have kids) are very passionate about the issue of childbearing, and the wounds of their decisions or non-decisions can be so deep that they will rabidly defend those decisions whether or not there are any feelings of regret, pain or self-pity present.

That said, the *only* people who are qualified to review this book are career-minded women in their 20s and early 30s who are still "on the fence" about childbearing, or who believe that modern science may help them conceive later in life, or who are so wrapped up in their careers that they still haven't taken up the challenges of marriage and/or childbearing. *Those* are the reviews you should pay attention to if you think you might be interested in reading this book. Everyone else is basing everything they say on their own self-defense.

I never wanted children. Because of the insane hype surrounding this book, I thought I was "safe" when I turned 40. I got a little sloppy with the birth control. Now I'm eleven weeks pregnant with my first child.

          Thanks heaps, Hewlett.

The book is so so. It's really not for anyone that doesn't have a working knowledge networks or computers. There are sections that are not very well-explained and i've run across grammatical errors.

The book is not without some value but it could be much better written. I wonder if Mike Minasi has written any books on DNS...his books are usually pretty good. :)

3 out of 5 stars Dated, Biased, But Worth the Price.......2002-11-27

In general, I am a big fan of For Dummies books. However, this book does not live up the usually high For Dummies standard for two reasons. This book was written at the height of the dot-com bubble, and GreatDomains.com wrote this book.

Having GreatDomains.com write this book would be like having Weight Watchers write Dieting for Dummies. You can't expect unbiased advice from a leading company whose business model is selling expensive generic/descriptive domain names.

There is a controversy on generic vs. proper names, but this is barely mentioned in the For Dummies Book. The opposite view, "The kiss of death for an Internet brand is a common (generic) name" is taken in the book "The 11 Immutable Laws of Internet Branding." I am not saying that one view or the other is correct, but a book on domain names should cover both sides.

Chapter 3 is titled "The New Land Rush in Domain Names." The first section is "Understanding the Reasons Behind Skyrocketing Domain Name Prices." Since the book has been published, domain name prices have fallen faster than dot-com stocks. All of the domain name prices in the book should be reduced by a factor of ten or more.

Still much of the book contains useful information, and the price is reasonable. You just have to keep in mind that the information is one-sided and written at the height of the dot-com bubble. A less biased but overly legal book is "Domain Names" by Elias & Gima. Also look at "How to Select & Buy an Elite Domain Name."

Wow, they all look good. Wow, I see problems in each. Wow, I don't know what I am doing here, I am a fish out of water in the franchising world. I found this book to be a good tool to have once you have found the businesses you want to investigate. The challenge is narrowing the list.

I didn't want to stand behind a counter making sandwiches(spent too long in corporate America for that), but beyond that I didn't know what else to narrow the list on. I found some help and between this book, others books and the advisor I found I was able to evalaute the market. Some investigation, and Google, led me to George Knauf and together we talked about companies, my goals and what is in the book.

Use all the tools available to you. I found the book to be a somewhat worthwhile investment and the advice to be worth a great deal, though somehow it din't cost me anything.

As a consultant to many franchisors, I am aware and have used most of the books on the market. I found the contact information very poor. In most cases, it would'nt give a specific name of who to talk to while many of the other books and web sites do. For more great information on Franchises, one should check out FranchiseAmerica.com

1 out of 5 stars This book offers little for the beginner........1999-05-02

This book was lacking in many areas. The definitions and explanations about franchising were often vague and incomplete. The topic of capital (about the most important part of franchising) was amazingly unclear. It was not ever mentioned exactly how much a person would need of their own funds vs. loans received from a bank. All 4 of the main Franchises I was interested in were not in the book, and the disclaimer in the beginning about why they weren't there justifies any omission. The book was just of no help to me whatsoever. I returned it.

1 out of 5 stars An expensive reprint of a Government Document.......1998-11-23

I should have been suspicious of this book when I did not find an author or a copyright on the title page. What I did find on the title page was "Reprint of the 23rd edition of Franchise Oportunity Handbook Issued 1995 by the United State Printing Office" In other words, this is a four year old list of franchises the was published by the Government. The bottom line . . . we paid for the information, now you can buy the book at retail or at the government printing office. Guess which is less expensive.

I bought this book as I found myself in a situation where I am having a job interview for the first time in the US. The book explains characteristics of the current US job market as well as how to deal with it. It is useful anyone in any stage of job hunting, and I cannot think of a better book.

3 out of 5 stars Not for beginners!.......1998-10-19

I didn't find this book very useful. I found the focus more for some changing jobs rather than trying to get a job in the first place. It would be a good reference for someone "stuck" in a job they don't like.

This book will keep you focused on the end result getting the job you want. It will show you step by step instructions on what to do and when to do it. This book would also be a good guide to goal setting since it keeps you focused on the final goal getting the job you want.

                        Book Description

No company of the twentieth century achieved greater success and engendered more admiration, respect, envy, fear, and hatred than IBM. Building IBM tells the story of that company -- how it was formed, how it grew, and how it shaped and dominated the information processing industry. Emerson Pugh presents substantial new material about the company in the period before 1945 as well as a new interpretation of the postwar era.

Granted unrestricted access to IBM's archival records and with no constraints on the way he chose to treat the information they contained, Pugh dispels many widely held myths about IBM and its leaders and provides new insights on the origins and development of the computer industry.

Pugh begins the story with Herman Hollerith's invention of punched-card machines used for tabulating the U.S. Census of 1890, showing how Hollerith's inventions and the business he established provided the primary basis for IBM. He tells why Hollerith merged his company in 1911 with two other companies to create the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company, which changed its name in 1924 to International Business Machines. Thomas J. Watson, who was hired in 1914 to manage the merged companies, exhibited remarkable technological insight and leadership -- in addition to his widely heralded salesmanship -- to build Hollerith's business into a virtual monopoly of the rapidly growing punched-card equipment business.

The fascinating inside story of the transfer of authority from the senior Watson to his older son, Thomas J. Watson Jr., and the company's rapid domination of the computer industry occupy the latter half of the book. In two final chapters, Pugh examines conditions and events of the 1970s and 1980s and identifies the underlying causes of the severe probems IBM experienced in the 1990s.
