Ricardo's text speaks for itself and is truly a classic. In Sraffa's careful and patient hands, this great work finds an editor who is the peer of its author. This is extraordinary value for money - this is a 6-star book.

Finding a method of being a mother first and working to provide income rather than slaving to provide a meager income and also having children would be useful to most women (and probably favored by men). As yet, the priority problem between children and working has been solved by so few except those who can afford child care and cleaning help, that most of women's entrepreneurship - including professional employment - is lost in translation! Hopefully this book can help. For men to conclude that women are more than women-children would also help despite the fact that most don't want to be men, contrary to Freud, and those that fantasize over him and his views.

5 out of 5 stars An Extremely Helpful Guide for the Female Entrepreneur.......2002-02-12

I read Dr. Moore's book a year ago as I started my business as a female entrepreneur, and now a year later I re-read it- and find all the lessons even more relevant and helpful. Any woman considering starting her own business should read this book several times. I have learned quite a bit over the last year, and Dr. Moore's book tremendously helped reduce my learning curve (not that it's been easy).

As a self- employed consultant focusing on women's leadership, I have found especially useful the author's pointers on negotiation, how to invest my time, and how to make the most of my networking resources. Her real-life examples and advice from successful female entrepreneurs and their stories is most inspiring and a continuing source of strength for me. My business has continued to grow, and I truly appreciate the opportunity to have learned from the other entrepreneurial women in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Advice from Women Entrepreneurs.......2001-05-20

Anyone who aspires to be a successful entrepreneur will find this book is definitely a "must read." From cover to cover, it is full of useful frameworks and wonderful quotes from some of the most successful women entrepreneurs in America. Through careful distillation of focused interviews, Dorothy Perrin Moore has captured the essence of the best advice these savvy business women have to offer.

A favorite chapter is the one on networking. It provides great examples of how these women entrepreneurs have gone about building the networks of contacts that have been a key to their success. The chapter on leadership offers terrific insight into developing an effective leadership style and making the transition to leader. The chapter on negotiation provides crucial advice about critical bargaining skills. There is much more to love in this insightful book.

The anecdotes and quotes are integrated throughout, making this book a particularly fascinating read for anyone involved in the business world.

5 out of 5 stars Packs in lessons from leading female entrepreneurs.......2001-01-24

                    5 out of 5 stars Terrific Advice!.......2000-10-12

Dorothy Moore"s Carerrpreneurs is a must read for women who want to succeed in today's business world. Its clear format and well organized style makes it a pleasure to read. I especially liked the self-assessment tool. I'm a Human Resource Consultant for a major corporation and would recommend this book to women at all stages of their careers. I found the practical wisdom expressed in these successful women's own words to be enlightening and inspirational. A great read!

3 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction, but lacks details or "action steps".......2000-03-22

Peter Keen's name grabbed my attention to this book. The book itself gets the credit for being the first to address the important but oft-ignored issue of trust in electronic commerce and e-business relationships. However, I found that the depth of discussion in this book was lacking (1) detail and (2) failed to provide any guidelines for how, as a manager, I could establish such "realtionships of trust" in my own company. The book does read like four different people wrote it and does not flow. There are some interesting ideas and examples, but I'd suggest you borrow it from the library first. Above average and recommended with slight reservations.

4 out of 5 stars Electronic Commerce Relationships: Trust by Design.......2000-03-17

Electronic Commerce Relationships: Trust by Design (Prentice Hall, 1999) examines the thorny and often nebulous issue of trust - defining it, identifying it, and establishing it. Difficult enough to create and to "get it right" in the traditional business-to-business and business-to-consumer brick and mortar market relationships, many organizations are scrambling to become "trust worthy" in the emerging virtual economies of cyberspace.

As virtual companies, storefronts, auction houses, and economies in general continue to dominate the evolving economic landscape of the new millennium, trust will become the glue of the global workspace. Trust is the calculation of the likelihood of future cooperation and is a defining feature of virtual cooperation. The life expectancy for some new online retailers could be tied to how fast they can convince customers that their online transactions will be processed safely, thereby creating a relationship of trust between both an unseen customer and an unseen merchant, interacting in a virtual environment.

If your organization is considering taking the electronic commerce (EC) plunge, this text should be required reading for everyone involved in your organization's EC implementation process.

This text is not E-Commerce for dummies, however. It is written for the practicing business and information technologies professional who already possesses a fundamental knowledge of the current developments in EC. It will appeal to senior and middle management that want to know in concrete terms:

                      · what business opportunities to capitalize; · what it takes to differentiate the hype from reality; · when launching EC initiatives, what risks and cost-effective control measures to adopt under various business scenarios; · what trust is and how trust, relationships and accountability can be established; · the regulatory awareness and positioning in the global context; · the role of external and internal auditors when EC is audited; · steps to manage an EC project which includes both in-house and outsourced components; · technical aspects in sufficient details for management to make informed decisions, but not details from the technical specialist's perspective.

Even those professionals who are venturing for the first time, even timidly, into the cyber markets of the 21st century will benefit greatly from the wealth of information, which the authors have compiled into this single text.

Electronic Commerce Relationships: Trust by Design will serve as an excellent EC handbook for Management - with vertical details in such areas as: multi-faceted perspectives on trust, business relationships, accountability, risk mitigation, controls, regulatory and audit requirements, and action items culled from the authors' personal experiences.

The authors have done an excellent job in taking a slippery topic, one that many organizations fail to address when racing to establish their "Web presence", and have not only grasped it firmly but, have clearly identified key elements to establishing trust, and critical issues to the successful implementation of corporate EC initiatives.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book --- very thorough.......2003-12-01

Whenever I ask experienced business people which are the best books to read for Incorporating, the name J.W. Dicks always comes up. I have purchased several books by Mr. Dicks and have been very satisfied with the results.

Dicks is very thorough, is an Attorney as well as a entrepneneur. He is one who has done it, can teach it and has the legal background to boot.

I highly recommend this or any book by J.W.Dicks.

4 out of 5 stars Fine book for starts.......2000-04-03

It's a good book for starts. This definitely clears a lot of concepts for a beginner entrepreneur. Of course, if you really need to go the big way, it's always best to consult a proper attorney. It is a good idea for this book as a quick reference on the desk of the entrepreneur.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful primer on starting a business with contact information for locating startup funds if necessary........2006-12-05

This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.

I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.

                        My favorite chapters were:

                        1. Initial business concerns
                        2. Your business' structure
                        3. Business start-up details
                        5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
                        7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
                        8. Obtaining the financing you need

The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.

I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.

Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.

I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.

When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 51 versions of this book sold; one for each state and the District of Columbia. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!
