    Book Description

East Asian exchange rates have become a global flashpoint. U.S. policymakers blame artificially low Asian currency values for global imbalances, including America's ballooning current account deficit. The solution, they argue, lies in some combination of greater exchange rate flexibility and the appreciation of Asian currencies against the dollar. Asian officials recognize the need to let their exchange rates rise, but they fear that would hamper growth and cut sharply into the value of their dollar reserves.

Toward an East Asian Exchange Rate Regime offers a timely and comprehensive analysis of the resulting debates, drawing on expertise from China, Japan, South Korea, and the United States. The introduction reviews the issues at stake, sketches a variety of proposed exchange rate regimes, and discusses comparisons between East Asia and the West. Subsequent chapters examine the connection between global financial imbalances and East Asian monetary cooperation, China's potential role in regional coordination, the relationship between monetary and trade integration, and different paths toward regional cooperation. Authoritative yet concise, this is an essential primer on East Asian monetary integration.

        Book Description

There is a deepening debate in East Asia about the prospects for common exchange rate arrangements, even including the formation of a common currency in the longer term. This raises a complex set of issues and this volume provides a detailed yet comprehensive examination of key issues in the debate. It looks, for example, at the nature and extent of linkages in East Asia, in terms of trade and foreign investment, finance, labour, and consumption, investment and output. It examines how the exchange rate affects various aspects of economies. And it critically analyses various proposals for currency regimes for the region, including floating exchange rates, basket pegs, and currency union. This book will be of interest to people studying common currency areas, international open economy macroeconomics, and regional economics, especially East Asia.

          Description:
Although East Asian economies grow more open and interdependent, forming a single currency region is a very distant prospect. This is due to the lack of political commitment and experience with political cooperation in East Asia. On the other hand, forming a quasi-monetary union is a feasible option open to East Asia. In such a process, the East Asian countries would jointly permit greater exchange rate flexibility with intervention and adopt flexible inflation target to guide their monetary policies. Flexible exchange rate systems together with flexible inflation targets are suitable for lowering the variations in exchange rates and keeping inflation low and stable. The coordinated implementation of both flexible exchange rate and inflation target is an unavoidable step toward political and economic convergence among the East Asian countries.

            Description:
This paper shows that many Asia-Pacific firms are significantly exposed to foreign exchange risk. Their exposure appears to be much more widespread than is typical for the large, western industrialized economies. The paper also shows that exchange rate pegs appear to do little to alleviate this widespread exposure against currencies other than the peg. The firms studied here are most exposed to fluctuations in the US dollar; the yen and the euro are important in a few countries. The extent of their exchange rate exposure has varied but not diminished over the last decade. The most widespread exchange rate sensitivity (not just the most exchange rate fluctuation) occurred during the Asian crisis period; this is evident even after accounting for the local macroeconomic conditions that affect aggregate local returns.

              Description:
This paper argues that a regional exchange rate system such as the EMS should not be ruled out when discussing monetary options for East Asia. The paper recalls that the 1992/1993 EMS crisis was the crisis of an exchange rate system and not just the collapse of unilateral pegs pursued by individual countries. It discusses distinct features that add to the credibility of regional exchange rate systems and reasons that a system that is built around well-defined rules and which is managed very carefully and cooperatively according to those rules could be both credible and sustainable even in the 21st century.

I bought this book from amazon, and when I sat down to read it, I was dismayed to see how out-of-date it was. For example, recent advances in online survey research are not covered.

Many research texts for business and the social sciences discuss secondary research sources. However, most, if not, all texts written in the past few years have had their chapters on this important subject invalidated by the the explosion of resources on the World Wide Web. Online Marketing Research is an excellent book to augment research texts used in academe or outdated research methods used by most businesses. The author also points out though that many of the "paid" resources such as Dialog, Nexis and Lexis, etc. still offer the highest quality information. This book is well worth the modest price.

A professional's guide to forecasting budget allocations and planning brand marketing campaigns
360° marketing is a proprietary method of looking at brand marketing developed by Ogilvy & Mather's international partners. As companies seek new ways to globalize, this original concept offers a useful and dynamic framework from which companies can effectively plan their brand marketing and budget allocation. In 360° Brand, Mike Murphy and Mark Blair-both seasoned Ogilvy & Mather employees-reveal this new method to readers and explain in simple, straightforward terms how it works. Filled with a variety of case studies including IBM, American Express, Pond's Institute, Nestlé, and Milo, this book is a practical and useful guide for all marketers. Expert advice and in-depth insights will help marketers and advertisers allocate their resources and combine all elements of the communication mix in an effective and cohesive manner.
Mike Murphy (Singapore) and Mark Blair (Tokyo) are both part of Ogilvy & Mather, Asia-Pacific.

"in Asia" is a bit limiting/misleading.
The book is a great read and thoroughly explains the concepts behind 360 Branding. It presents a clear vision of where branding has been, and how branding anywhere must evolve and expand right now for the future. The Asia aspect comes at the end of each chapter with a short 1-3 page application/case study of that chapter's material "in Asia." It basically says, "Hey, this stuff works. Look what happened in Asia."

Yes, your communications need to be "integrated." But this shows book shows what that concept will mean in the future.

This book is the literary equivalent of an Ikea coffee table: looks great on the surface, but underneath it's nothing but cheap filler.

Leave it to a group of advertising types to fill an entire book with marketing jargon, case studies and puffery that accomplishes nothing save prop up the ad agency the authors work for and fill each author's own lungs with air. This book is pure nonsense. Save your money.

The book's main premise: 360 degree branding. Translation: integrated communications. By the way, there is no secret to branding in Asia which the authors lead you to believe SEE TITLE. Integrated branding, applied correctly, in any part of the world works. It just so happens the authors' live and work in Asia and are trying to build business in that region.

If you are in marketing and don't understand that your company's website must have the same personality as its pr as its marcom as its advertising, you shouldn't be in marketing.

5 out of 5 stars A book that really know the Asians.......2003-06-19

The book is a really easy reading and the best thing is about its understanding of Asians. The 360 degree branding concept is especially good at simulating readers to think about the unlimited possibilities of what a brand can do. Being an Asian, I am tired of reading books from Westeners who actually don't recognize the characteristics of people living here. This book, on the contrary, impresses me by discussing some interesting differences of Asians against Western people in the first chapter. The observations are deep and valid. And I truly believe that this understanding is crucial to every one working in the Asian branding industry.

5 out of 5 stars A great read for anyone even vaguely interested in branding.......2003-03-02

I really enjoyed the book, and thought that it was a very easy to read, easy to understand book about branding in Asia. It's examples are entertaining and sometimes surprising, and what has been achieved in the Asian market is a good example of the future of world-wide branding. If anyone is even vaguely interested in branding, and not just in Asia, I recommend you read this book.
