Known as the standard reference for international economic data, the World Development Report 1998-1999 provides a set of Selected World Development Indicators as an appendix, presenting social and economic statistics for more than 200 countries.

This book is a broad summary of the different levels of education and information capacities of developing and industrial countries. It is filled with statistics and enough numbers to resolve any debates and arguments that may arise at a lunch table.

During the late nineteenth century, a visitor to the city of Chicago would have looked in wonder at the many strange, new, and exciting sights: the nation's first skyscrapers, the bustling and congested streets, the large department stores, and the business girls. The Souls of the Skyscraper documents and explains the transformation of clerical work from a male to a female occupation amidst the industrialization and urbanization of the United States. Using literary, organizational, statistical, cinematic, and archival evidence primarily from Chicago, Lisa M. Fine explains the historical reasons why clerical work became women's work.

The appearance of the female clerical worker in the business office signaled two on-going developments: the simple shift of women entering and dominating office jobs that were previously held by men, and the changing gender definition of clerical work. This new opportunity for employment provided women with relatively well-paying and respectable jobs, even though the prestige of the clerical positions was devalued as more women were hired. While economic forces contributed to this process of occupational change, the vocational education of women, the availability of various types of social services such as group homes (e.g. the Eleanor Residences), and the evolving image of the working girl in the popular culture encouraged women to seek clerical positions.

Fine explores the realms where the gender definition of clerical work was discussed and negotiated: among technical experts, in the popular culture, in the prescriptions and actions of civic leaders, and in the private worlds of clerical workers themselves. In revealing the dynamics of change within the clerical sector, she enhances our understanding of occupational sex-typing.

This book will save you a lot of time and protect you from mis-steps by helping you understand the financial aspects of your startup.

The author treats the subject in a ready-to-use, practical terms. The book discusses the most important financial steps the startup must take - financial plannning, understanding and attracting the right kind of investment and the financial execution during the early stage. Along the way, the author discusses the issues that one can only gain by many years of experience. Highly recommend it.

I am an advisor to start up companies. I strongly recommend this book to anyone involved in developing a working business plan for an early stage company. This book can be a quick read for the entrepreneur who needs an overall view of financial planning and management. At the same time, the book includes many sample worksheets that can be practically helpful in preparing specific parts of a business plan.

Most start-up business plans (and books and guidelines offered by experts) concentrate on product and technology, some sales and marketing, and the team and their history. They leave out many critical issues that are covered here. Rod Hoagland unfolds and discusses the critical links and feedback loops between the financial plan and the rest of the business plan in a very practical and understandable manner.

Chapters 3, 4, and 5 are particularly timely in today's difficult fundraising environment. They cover many of the topics that must be considered for fund raising, including alternatives to equity financing.

Section Two of the book (Ch. 8-11) tackles the very complicated subject of financial execution. While one can not expect a CFO/COO to pop out of the box here, the issues covered provide a comprehensive To DO list. Many definitions and explanations are provided. Using this section, a new company can plan staffing and outsourcing requirements. The confusing and now controversial stock options are explained at a high level. While the details of an employee stock option plan exceed the scope of this book, the basic definitions and guidelines provided here are very helpful considerations for new companies.

I recently ordered the book and it looked great based upon the contents and other reviews. The book needs rewritten as it lacks substance (details), is difficult to read, and is WAY overpriced! It is more like a summary of what needs to be done, yet lacks the details of the process. I was sorely dissappointed with this book! Anyone want a... copy?

An Entrepreneurs' #1 Source for early stage development.......2003-01-05

Entrepreneurial growth companies are the next wave of investments that sophisticated investors, groups and professional organizations will chase. I agree with the author that "a venture business combines both high risk and the potential for high reward." The main emphasis, lost among aspiring start-ups, "is to work consistently at increasing the size of the prize and reducing the risk."

This is the most concise and direct book I have read concerning how a start-up company can bridge the gap between the seed/research/development/concept stage (aka idea, first-half early phase) to the start-up stage (aka beta testing, second-half early phase).

This book will save years of headaches and frustration; however, reviewing other sources and articles about this topic is necessary to gain a better understanding and appreciation about what the author is writing about. Consider additional reading material, for balance, such as Gerald Benjamin's 'Angel Financing' and Ray Smilor's 'Daring Visionaries.'

This book is written for the "accomplished" individual. I am inclined to believe that academic and formal training are also required to successfully coordinate with the progression of this book.

This book considers the impact of insolvency and the claims of creditors on the family. The conflict between the interests of creditors and the interests of the family is not easy to resolve particularly in the context of a marriage breakdown, bankruptcy, or where claims concern the possession of the family home. This is therefore an area of considerable practical importance and one that raises key issues of principle. The book provides commentary on the existing regime (covering both contentious and non-contentious matters), and also highlights new questions and problems not previously considered in any depth, including the enforceability of mortgages of the family home against surety spouses, and the impact on family members of application of orders for sale. It acts as a guide for family and insolvency practitioners who already have an understanding of basic procedures but need advice on the complexities when these two areas come into conflict. The book first examines the claims of creditors in this context with special emphasis on the position of secured creditors. It considers the circumstances in which a mortgage may not be binding on a spouse or cohabitant, the enforcement of mortgages, and the position of creditors and trustees in bankruptcy seeking an order for sale of the family home. Too brief, difficult to read, little insight........2007-04-13

I had high hopes for this book. After 45 years with Herman Miller, you would expect more than 128 pages, many of them blank or filled with terrible, random photography. The book looks like it was put together by some 14 year olds. The writing seems excessively simplistic, much of it filled with quotes or the kinds of platitudes you expect to hear before a boardroom presentation.

Skip it. Save your money.

A great book about life, leadership, and business.......2005-04-22

I first met Dick Ruch as a Hope College student, where he was the donor for my endowed scholarship. We talked at a scholarship luncheon, and several days later I received this book in the mail along with a handwritten note. I knew that Dick Ruch retired from Herman Miller having held the positions of CEO, CFO, and chairman of the board, but I did not know he was an author.
In fact, this book is very good. Ruch writes in a personal and down-to-earth tone, which is just like the man that tried to know each of his employees' names. He brings a Christian worldview into the business realm, and describes how leading and following must go hand in hand. There can be no leaders without followers, and there is a time and place for each.
I would highly recommend this book, but it is hard to find in print.
