Just a Review.......2003-09-22

This book does do a nice job of covering "Risk Management" issues. It is a pretty good review for administrators. This would not work out for anyone trying to learn new topics. The chaperter are very vague and require and advanced background of current fire service management.

A difficult book to use.......2007-05-22

I have to use this book in a technical writing course and I find it difficult to use and read, especially if you are new to the field.

The formatting and layout of the book makes it easy to lose track of which section you are in (using a numbering system to identify sections would be helpful) and it needs more white space. The author tends to be verbose at times and this also helps to "lose" the reader.

A short answer or multiple choice question section would be useful to help in review of material covered in a chapter.

The index seems somewhat sparse and a "master" glossary at the end would be useful.

A Must-Have for Technical Writers!.......2006-01-30

I had taken a course in Technical Communication for which this book was a recommended-read. After going through the chapters, I must say that this is an excellent guide for anyone who documents software.

The book takes a task-oriented approach and lists some great pointers. It gives you a step-by-step process for analyzing users, learning a software program, and writing the documentation; teaches you the basics of page and screen design, and even helps you understand the software users better.

This is the only *readable*(cover-to-cover) technical writing book that I have come across. Definitely a great buy!

I can't believe how cheap this book was!! I received it in less than a week and it is in great condition.

I was required to read this book for a technical writing class. I was amazed that a book that boasts it can teach technical documentation could have so many glaring errors in grammar and spelling. (Maybe that's why so many people don't read manuals.)
While the book does well as a step-by-step approach, most of the information is in other books. I would not recommend this book.

Great in-depth book for the new Tech Writer.......2001-04-21

I got this book through an online cetification class for writing user manuals and reference guides. I never would have found this book had it not been for that class. This book is great in that it takes you through the 7 steps of documentation. I'd recommend this book for those getting started in the technical writing field and those who are senior members. The author also chunks the information in a way that is easily understandable. Great book!

The title is misleading. Only the existing businesses are reviewed, not those of noteworthiness that are no longer around but have a place in New York City's history. The book is a pocket edition with the briefest histories, I read the entire book in less than an hour! For the Amazon price of about $11 it was not worth the cost to return it.

Handiest book for history lovers.......2006-05-31

I'm fascinated with the history of New York, and I love the Victorian and Edwardian eras in the city's perspective. This book is packed with great stories about the founders of the said shops and restaurants, quick business histories and what to look for once inside the joint.

Makes an original and very thoughtful gift, and is a great addition to any New York lover's library.

A great book for New Yorkers!.......2002-12-12

I am a native New Yorker who has spent the past five years living in other cities, and being a little homesick, I still read the New York Times every day.

As I was reading the morning paper, I found an ad for this book, ordered it, and immediately fell in love with it! It is beuatifully laid out and wonderfully written. What's more, I always thought that I knew a ton about the city, but I learned so much from reading this book -- I had no idea that some of the restaurants and shops reviewed in the novel were so old. I also read about some really interesting places that I had never heard of.

I plan to give this book as a holiday gift to all of my fellow New Yorker friends -- both to those who are far away from the city they love, and to those who are right at home!

Even New Yorkers Need This Book!.......2002-09-07

New York can be a shopping paradise or shopping hell. One thing that anyone can always use is a real New Yorker to guide one through the city. That's what this book is. It's like having a best friend show you the way around, to the best places, the best shops you don't find in travel guides or online.

As a former New Yorker, this book took me back to the streets, the way it is to really experience it -- on foot, not from a taxicab or a rental car. The authors clearly know their way around. How to Get a Better Job Quickly by Richard Payne

Surprisingly, this job hunting job, now in its third edition, is stil available. I owned the first original edition (1979). I remember vividly my decision to explore new opportunities to stretch my professional potential, especially towards the late 70's, after having stayed in the same engineering job for more than thirteen years. I was eagerly contemplating a new engineering job that had a prominent slant towards marketing.

I came across this job hunting book by chance. I found it to be an excellent fact-packed field guide. Prior to this book, I had read & digested all that had been published on the subject in the public library during the period. I therefore found this book to be the best I had seen on hunting for a new job.

It was also well written & easy to read. More importantly, the author had excellent credentials in personal marketing & outplacement services.

In retrospect, no detail in a job hunt was overlooked. Among other basic tips, the author helped me to isolate my key experiences that would sell myself & to put them across in a resume & interviews.

Practically, every conceivable aspect of job hunting was covered, from writing the first letter to securing the final offer with maximum returns.

Throughout my twenty four years of working in the corporate world, I had made three major career transitions. This book was my one & only field guide.

Dave is preaching some good lessons about life in this book. Values, vision, intensity, patience, wisdomonics (his word).... but the key to me is contentment. Learn to be happy that you are loved by God, and stop looking at spending money on stuff to make you happy. See yourself as a participant in God's world doing His will, and stop focusing on yourself. I know this is easier said than done, and especially if you have a family to support (you always want to give them the best stuff). This isn't your typical financial planning book, or even your typical how to get out of debt book, but it is filled with good thoughts about life in general, and if you live them, Dave promises other problems (e.g., money) will fade away, or at least get under control. I give this a big thumbs up.

Dave's teaching is practical and common sense. If you follow his plan you will have peace and prosparity. His simple teaching may be scoffed at because it seems common sense, however most people don't follow this and they suffer. I hope you'll read it for your benefit. If you want to have more than enough in your financies and in your life, then read this book.

Especially in todays enviroment where words like integrity, honesty and courage seem to be set aside for excuses and lies. The book takes Dave's first book and drives home the behavioral changes that need to take place to be successful in all aspects of life. Great Job Dave and thank you.

Anti-"junk advertising" projects that anyone can do, etc........2002-06-07

I most liked this book for its encouraging tone with step-by-step directions for confronting so much unwanted junk; and also for its clearly taught and very brief personal finance theory from the perspective of a "meet-the-customer" loaning professional. Additionally, he seems to remind us well of the connectedness between the mismanagement of credit and a lifetime risk of marital disaster. He then offers a better way for starting a smart credit history. Very kind humor has a portion in this book as well. I read this several months ago and applied the proportion most meeting my anti-junk needs (the book estimates the return on efforts). Other areas I've taken to heart, as was the author's sincere intent. Here are easy to do projects and ideas that pay-off personally.

Striking study of poverty; a vital read.......2005-05-25

The author, a noted economist from Harvard, visited four continents to determine why some civilizations remain poor. He wondered why some groups had stayed poor for centuries. He found that poor societies accommodate their poverty. As hard as it is to live in poor conditions, unfortunately people find it more difficult to accept the hardship -- the challenge -- involved in making a better living. Thus, they accommodate their poverty, and it lingers from year to year, even decade to decade. A brilliant insight and a book for the ages.

I read the book "Song of the Trees." I really enjoyedit. It was also kind of sad.
One of my favorite character is Little Man. I lke him because he always dressed like he was going to meet the president. Another charater I like is Cassie because she stuck up for her brothers. And she seemed pitty nice and kind. A last one is Mr.andersen. I like him because he was mean and Cassie and her two brothers beat up on him. But I don't like cause hes mean.He was about to whip Little Man.
It's sad because they were cutting down all the nice trees. Mr. Andersen was about to whip Little Man when the kids were messing around and fighting with him.

I thought that this was a pretty good book and that I would recommend it to someone else. In this story there are these black people that own land thats a forest and these white people want to cut almost all the trees in the forest so they said that they would give them money but since they cut down more than theypaid for so one of the kids went to get there dad. he came back and set up dynimites all over and was going to kill himself and the lumber man if they didn't get out right then.

This was a very short story set in the depression time. It had a sad ending, though it was happy in a way too....but the trees wouldn't sing anymore.

I thought that this was a really good book. It was kinda sad and happy at the same time. I thought that it was sad because I felt kinda bad for Opal, the main character of the book, because I could never imagine not having a mother. At the same time I felt happy for her because she had found friends in the end and of course Winn-Dixe in the beginning.

I would recommend this book to other people especially kids in the fourth, fifth, and sixth grade. If your were younger and you liked to read I'm sure that you would like it too. I hope that reading this book review will make you want to read it even if you have already read it before. I have.
