No longer topical or relevant.......2000-10-04
The Asian crisis has changed much and this book does not address issues or circumstances that concern managers or researchers today.
dated (when it was written)..........1999-05-27
This is at best a choppy book, written by various people on their perceptions of Asian business. I think it does little to explain how Asian businesses actually operate -- some it is PR, some of it hype and some just regurgitation from mewspapers, etc. These are some of the same types of people so picked on by the IMF now for failing to inform them how business actually functioned in Asia! The most telling evidence - although written just prior to the onslaught of the Asian crisis, none of the "experts" foresaw it or its effects on competitive business operations in Asia. It is even less useful now. Marginal at best.
Filled with information and insight........1999-03-25
Offers an evaluation of 14 Asian countries in terms of each one's potential role in the global strategies of multinational companies, from both a market and production or supply vantage point. The author examines the extent that strategy must be adapted to each nation and how each is strategically used by companies. It also provides a framework for developing regional and country strategies. Filled with information and insight. Reviewed by Gerry Stern, founder, Stern & Associates and HRconsultant.com InfoCenter.

Book Description
Women and minorities are increasingly entering fields where white male power is firmly entrenched. The spaces they come to occupy are not empty or neutral, but are imbued with history and meaning. This groundbreaking book interrogates the pernicious, subtle but nonetheless widely held view that certain bodies are naturally entitled to certain spaces, while others are not. How are positions of authority racialized and gendered? How do people manage their femininity and/or blackness while in a predominantly white male context? How do spaces become naturalized or normalized, and what does it mean when they are disrupted? Engaging with a range of material from a variety of institutions, Space Invaders is a timely contribution to wide-reaching debates on race, gender and space. It is the first book to articulate the full complexity of diversity in organizations.

Book Description
J2EE is the crowning piece of Java technology. It makes distributed computing possible for the Java environment via a suite of Java APIs that work together. J2EE allows Java programmers to create Enterprise Applications that are scalable and fault-tolerant. J2EE is specification that is supported by a variety of application servers, including WebLogic. "Moving to J2EE with WebLogic 7" gives Java developers an introduction to the J2EE 1.3 technologies through the step-by-step development of an n-tier application. The book details best practices through the use of design patterns, provides clear examples of these patterns, and shows consequences of these design choices via performance analysis. Joe Graf and Chris Sousa leverage their years of experience creating distributed applications for top e-companies to provide a complete application that explains the whys, as well as the hows of n-tier development. While the book expects programmers to be familiar with JSP and servlets, it covers these technologies as well as EJBs, JMS, JAXP, and more, including WebLogic proprietary features. With the base understanding of J2EE in place, "Moving to J2EE with WebLogic 7" explains how to deploy and configure the application upon WebLogic. During this part of the book, programmers will learn about scalability, availability, and the network architecture to achieve these goals. The book chronicles the deployment of an Enterprise Application, creation of JMS queues, and configuring data sources. The book also shows programmers how to deploy the application into a cluster for high availability and better scalability.
Book Description
A primer on the promises and perils of franchising.
Now in paper! It's big business, accounting for one-third of America's retail revenue. But franchising is still a risky proposition—at least for the franchisee. This resource exposes the frauds and abuses too many companies perpetrate on their franchisees—everything from unfulfilled pledges of promotional support to oversaturating the market with outlets. It helps potential franchise owners avoid being victimized by explaining, in specific detail, what to look for, what questions to ask, and what agreements to make before signing a contract. Robert Purvin also reveals how to identify and take advantage of the worthwhile franchising opportunities available today.
ROBERT PURVIN, JR. (San Diego, California) is an attorney who is an expert on franchising and franchise law. He is Chairman of the American Association of Franchisees and Dealers.
Customer Reviews:
The dark side of franchising revealed.......2007-05-28
I am researching some business opportunities, including franchising. I was put off by some of the terms of the franchise agreements that I had reviewed, and so ordered some books on the subject. "The Franchise Fraud" is a must read for anyone considering "renting" (you don't buy a franchise, they all have a limited term). Mr. Purvin exposes many of the traps and pitfalls that can befall a franchisee when they don't understand what they are getting into. He also debunks many of the rosy statistics about success rates quoted by franchisors. In many cases, the franchise company holds all of the cards, and the franchisee has very few rights under the typical franchising contract.
Truly outstanding.......2002-07-05
The most intelligent and well reasoned business book I have read in a long time.
As an aspiring entrepreneur, and like many others, I considered purchasing a franchise as one possible route to business ownership. Not having owned a business previously, I figured this could be a lower risk way to learn about business through the benefit of a pre-existing, "proven" business method. For the price of the franchise, I would enjoy a symbiotic, cooperative relationship with the franchisor, for a cut of my revenues in exchange.
In short, I was prepared to buy into the franchise fraud.
Robert Purvin knows his subject. He spent the better part of his career as an attorney representing franchisors. With so colorful a title, I was expecting a rant against franchises in the broad language of most business books.
I was pleasantly surprised. Mr. Purvin, in summary, details the many ways in which franchisors, well with the law as it currently exists, target and bleed their middle class franchisees. With citation to court cases, government publications, and other authoritative material, the autor picks apart the myth that "95% of franchises are successful". He details the powerful legal and contractual methods through which many franchisors, far from helping and coaching their franchisees, use franchisees' capital to test unproven markets, saturate existing ones and take over the cream of the crop.
Not wanting a single book to shape my opinion, I confirmed with actual franchisees their opinion of the industry. Their complaints read like a checklist from the book. Needless to say, purchasing a franchise has sunk to the lower rungs of my list of opportunities.
Don't get ripped off. Buy this book.
A must read for any potential franchisee.......2002-02-26
Purvin does a great job in giving detailed description on deceptive practices in the franchising industry. A real eye opener on how a person can be easily burned. The book is dated, but is still very relevant.
Good Investment.......2001-10-24
This book identified the qualities of a good franchise. This is a must read -- it is worth the investment in time and money!
MUST BUY.......1999-12-29
This is an excellent franchise book. It is very comprehensive and broad book with a lot of examples. It is written in a clear and easy to understand way. MUST BUY.

Well written guide for anyone interested in a career in VC.......2005-02-17
This is a well-researched and written guide for anyone interested in a VC career. It is primarily targeted at MBAs exploring their options after business school and puts a career in VC in context with the typical MBA alternatives - investment banking and management consulting. Even though as a mid-career executive I am not within that target group, I found this a compelling reading with helpful tips on how to get one of those elusive entry level VC positions through networking and aggressive self-marketing. I ordered this book directly from wetfeet.com and I was charged a whopping $15 for surface delivery.

Customer Reviews:
good to know..........2003-04-10
that at least the biotech market is experiencing good growth. i liked this guide for the specific info it gave on where those areas of growth are as well as the pros and cons for working in that industry. all in all, it gave me a good feel for what i can do once i graduate with my biology degree--and also important, how much i can expect to make (good for when i finally get into salary negotiations! would hate to be low-balled!). i'm thinking i'd like to go work at a biotech or pharmaceutical company, maybe get into one of their special undergraduate programs and then go back to school for my master's. this guide gave me the tools i need to target the specific companies that match my interests.
Great Starter.......2003-03-07
I thought this guide was really helpful to evaluate the industry overall and see where I fit in. It should also come in handy for answering questions intelligently when it comes time to interview.
I can see from the above review that a PhD candidate didn't find it very helpful, but I don't think this guide is primarily for PhDs. It's a general starter for those who are seriously cosidering a career in biotech and pharmaceuticals, but who might not have the structure and advisory help that PhDs have.
Great way to start your search!.......2001-12-18
This book is an great resource. As a non-tech person interested in biotech, I found it extremely approachable. Recommended.
Great intro to the industry.......2001-06-30
This is an excellent intro to the biotech and pharmaceutical industry--especially if you want to figure out how the industry stacks up, what kinds of opportunities there are, and how to go about finding a job with a firm. I worked at a dot com and decided that I wanted to try something new--biotech seems to be one of the few industries that's still growing today. This guide has helped me identify and pursue a number of opportunities at some very interesting companies. Like other wetfeet publications, it's also a great read.
Inadequate for.......2000-01-06
For $30 I expected a whole lot more. The majority of information is superficial and provides very little useful information for a person that is in the process of getting into this industry. I found the book to be more appropriate for those considering a career in the biotech industry. The industry breakdown section gives a very general overview of the different types of companies. There are a few pages of tables that I found useful particularly the number of jobs industry-wide categorized by employment function. There are 15 pages of company profiles that offer very general information. Looking up the stock symbol on Yahoo would give a much more in depth view of the company (of course that's free). The description of jobs was very brief weighing heavily on those jobs requiring business degrees. I very much liked the section that profiled real people in industry. I was very interested in reading the profile of a Ph.D scientist, but guess what there was no profile for this. There was some useful information on interview tips. Overall I'd say that the information contained within this book is minimally useful and definately not worth $30. In particular, the useful information for a Ph.D. is woefully lacking. On the positive side, as I review the Wet Feet website, I see a lot of useful information there. Since this company is relatively young, hopefully future versions will be more comprehensive.

This book helped me deal with the issue of money in a spiritual context, without the sappy sentimentality or wishful thinking of most of the prosperity oriented stuff out there. If you're interested in learning how to deal with money in the context of your spiritual path, whatever it is, this book can help. It helped me transform how I use money and how I let it affect me.

Don't Miss This One.......2001-06-06
The Stone River Assignment is an amazing book. Somehow riveting (no pun intended) even though the weight of the story is truly on the business of downsizing Stone River Metalworks, and the characters are in the service of that larger story. The way things work, and the way people don't always fit into the working scheme is a fascinating theme and certainly speaks to our experience. It's rare to get away with this kind of structure in a novel, and Wheeler has done it beautifully. There are two intertwined story-lines that play off each other. One is the corporate story, and the other is a love story. The idea that the hero is going to find himself in a really difficult position, when it comes to the interests of the corporation - because of his compassion and especially because of his love for the boss' daughter - makes the book incredibly compelling. The hero of this book, a moral and ethical person, is in a position of great power in the corporation. He has to deal with a terrible challenge. The story quietly and compellingly gathers dimension as it progresses. The book is interesting on many levels and has important things to say about the way we live. Wheeler has found a fine balance between characters and business matters and has worked it well throughtout the book. I greatly enjoyed reading this book. The pacing is flawless, the characters are idiosyncratic and sympathetic, and Wheeler makes us really care what happens.

This is a book for people bursting with energy and ideas. It comes from the heart of a man who has seen and done it all in one of the toughest markets of them all. Customer Reviews:
A must read book for everyone........2002-06-21
This is a fantastic book that is very easy and quick to read. I read it and now am buying copies for friends, children and about anyone else I think would benefit by understanding decision making rules that lead to success. It is one thing to be an "Entrepreneur" and quite another thing to be an Entrepreneur who makes good decisions that lead to business growth and profitability.
I wish I could find a source to buy this book in volume so I could get more copies at a lower cost.
World-class business thinker-Bill Heinecke.......2000-04-17
Imagine the opportunity to sit down in your favorite readingchair, mine just happens to be my buckskin leather chair, next to awarm fire... on a cool Florida evening in February. Add a nice bottle of Australian Merlot, and read the most commonsensical, witty, and highly diverse real world business success stories you have ever read, in one night. Directly from the mouth of one of the world's most successful entrepreneurs, in one of the world's toughest markets. This book tells of experiences with success and failure in business and how to keep it all in perspective without being riddled with those $50 words.
Every competent entrepreneur knows full well that starting any new venture in your own backyard is extremely difficult and very risky. Imagine if you move to a new city to start the business or even a new state, can you imagine dealing with a foreign culture or a foreign country as an American? I would expect 9.999 of 10 would fail miserably in this situation. In this new millennium, Global Mega-Corporations with G-V's and Global Express' are still finding that doing American-style business in Asia is tantamount to climbing Everest, not to mention Thailand specifically. But one common theme prevails in Thai business, American business or business anywhere else in the world, it simply takes common sense and the logic of knowing when to check your ego at the door.
This is a must read for every college student that wants to "climb the corporate ladder" someday, all budding entrepreneurs in all industries, middle-level managers who truly want to move-up, and senior level executives who want to understand how to work efficiently with the "team-members" who work with you to "increase the wealth of the shareholder." It is truly a team effort in Global Business today.
Bill, thanks for an inspiring, educational, and motivational read. I look forward to filing your flight plans and breaking speed records on the way to Bangkok with your new..........
Great Book.......2000-03-30
This has been one of the best books I have read in a while. Mr. Heinecke shows great insight into the methods of an entrepreneur. In addition, Mr. Heinecke's entrepreneurial endeavors have been centered in Thailand and Southeast Asia, giving the book great insight into Asian culture. After living in Thailand for 6 years as a child, it was very interesting to see the methods and organization of Mr. Heinecke's many business ventures I had grown accustomed to while in Thailand. Overall, and excellent book!
