More important than any of the specific industries or practices represented is that each study illustrates important principles of organization that generalize to commercial transactions in other settings.

Good overview for non-economists.......2004-11-17
While the book begins with the usual benefits of outsourcing and how the world is becoming globalized yada yada, two chapters are well worth the used copy price. They offer a nice review of research in economics research journals such as American Economic Review. The first is Chapter 5 on "Specialization", which discusses the economic side of specialization by outsourcing. It makes a compelling argument for both how outsourcing facilitates deeper specialization and the risks that are inherent in treading this path. The second worthy chapter is Chapter 7 on "Control and Flexiblity." This chapter reviews how outsourced activities ought to be controlled, how contracts ought to be structured, and the residual rights that often cause problems. A note of caution for non-academic readers: This is a research-focused book and not (in my opinion) intended for a general audience. The tone is very academic, so don't expect to see a Harvard Business Review style light reading here! The writing style is more like Management Science than American Economic Review. Browse at your local Borders before you buy. There are some insightful nuggets in this nice and concisely-written book. Recommended.

In it, he carefully analyzes the costs and benefits of contracting out, using a wealth of examples and case studies to drive home his points. Further, Domberger places contracting out in its broader context -- as one of the strategies businesses and public organizations can use to improve, respectively, their bottom line or their delivery of public services. Rich, Useful Information in a Humorous, Readable Format.......2000-10-11
Timothy Casey, a senior VP for MCI WorldCom, transmits executive-quality knowledge in "ISP Liability Survival Guide" for a panhandler-level price. Despite the fact that he is what we techies would probably call a "suit," his writing is relaxed, anecdotal, and even humorous. But don't let his conversational writing style fool you; he is a MAJOR player in this industry. As a corporate executive and quasi-ambassador, Casey is a kind of Internet lobbyist. He has been immersed in virtually every state, federal, and international regulatory craze, preventing the regulators from turning the Internet as we know it into one great big cluster... (I hope I'm not the only one who still uses that phrase from Clint Eastwood's 'Heartbreak Ridge.') After reading the book, it kind of amazed me that he would disclose as much useful information as he does for the relatively small cost of this book. Other prominent Internet-lawyers-turned-writers charge literally five times as much, and you get less useful stuff and more legal jargon. And even if you enjoy being ripped off, no one has written a book of this type yet! Casey covers every aspect of Internet law that affects ISPs and similarly-situated e-businesses and customers. If anyone has read about the richness vs. reach debate (Evans and Worster, "Blown to Bits"), you will know what I mean when I swear that the info in this book is extremely rich. I love this book, and it still amazes me that in an industry where information is our chief commodity, Casey is giving away so much rich knowledge, practically for peanuts.

This book will help ISP's to sort through all the existing laws, regulations, policies, and issues and help them to determine which ones apply to them and how applicable ones should be enforced through their services.
This book provides an excellent treatment of handling intellectual property issues. Trademark, copyright, patent, and domain name issues are big today. ISP's will receive a mini-course in dealing with them. What is a trademark? What is a copyright? What is fair use? What constitutes infringement? What are the implications of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA)? What is the ISP's liability? How does an ISP respond to a complaint? It's all covered here. ISP's will appreciate the advice on handling reported incidents of alleged infringement.
ISP's face a number of other serious threats to their services. Some of these are caused by the conduct of their own clients and sometimes through the efforts of outside parties looking for ways of expanding their reach. ISP's must keep up on gambling, pornography, spamming, spoofing, cookies, fraud, defamation, libel, and child privacy issues. This book will educate ISP's about these troublesome issues and provide them with strict guidelines that will keep them operating on the strait and narrow.
ISP's receive advice and instruction on other matters such as planning, establishing, and enforcing policies and terms of service. Spiegel can be counted on to reveal truths about starting a home business. He sold Chile Pepper magazine 10 years after he began it, netting more than one million dollars. He lists here 200 "hot" work ideas, which he divides into four categories: professional, nonprofessional, opportunities (defined as a business start-up package to buy), and franchises. At times the separations are curious, even questionalable. Why is a children's party clown classified as professional, and event catering nonprofessinal? Each "launch it yourself" entry features a description, start-up needs, customers, typical charges, earnings potential, and tips for getting started; other category entries simply list the vitals and fees needed -- though the author claims these have the best track records. I gave this book to the saddest man I know, and that is saying a LOT because I spend tons of time on the internet. Anyway, he said he would read it and he said the advice was decent but he still hasn't been laid in months and in fact is considering going gay.
Oh well at least it got there on time.
This book gets an "F".......2006-09-20
This book is downright ridiculous. It is mainly the author's personal stories and has little if any realistic advice for dating or improving your skills. I wanted ideas, but instead got useless stories about how being a shoe salesman, or running into a girl from a religious organization led to the author getting a one-night stand. Others are just plain bizarre- like how to pick up girls at an abortion clinic. I will concede that it does have a few good points- if you can get it without having to pay anything for it, I would also say go ahead. But the author comes off as a bit egotistical, and as an uneducated guy trying to pull of a get-rich-quick scheme. The reviews of the book all use far better diction and style than this work. The wise man learns from the mistakes of others- don't waste your money like I did.
A waste of money.......2006-05-11
After I read this book I got the feeling that if this man had spent more time working on this book instead of trying to pick up women he could have written a much better book. This book has a few good recommendation in it but not enough to justify the price. There are much better books on the subject of meeting and dating women. "How to succeed with women" by Ron Louis and David Copeland is my recommendation. It's cheaper and gives 100 times more practical advice. If you find "Over 200 Proven Ways and Places to Pick Up Girls " on sale for a $1 somewhere go ahead and buy it. Otherwise don't waste your money.

You'd never know there were 100 women interviewed or that they said anything at all to the author.
I thought this book could give some insight to the female mindset, especially in situations where they're being approached, but alas, it's 200 high school cookie-cutter tricks for approaching women.

It's a funny book. Which is really the best you can hope for in this type of literature. If you are really hinging your hopes of scoring on a book - well just buck up and hire a pro. seriously. And toss that guilt out the window about it. This book ain't gonna change your life - but for what it is, it did make me chuckle now and again.

Resist Interrogation.......2000-09-29
There are many manuals on techniques of interrogation, but few dealing with the subject's point of view. Luger's book is valuable because it gives you valuable information on how to resist being pressured and manipulated by skilled interrogators who want to make you say what they want. Luger deals with the psychology of interrogation, and lays out many tactics and tricks interrogators use to make people talk, such as indicating the interrogation is over and slipping in some casual questions to catch the subject off guard. He also points out that interrogators are not necessarily police, but often employers who wilol use a variety of tactics to winnow information, including personal information, from job-seekers. This book provides the reader with an array of methods to avoid being manipulated by interrogators and interviewers, including how to cope with the polygraph and psychological tests. All told, this unique book is worth reading by anyone who has to face interviews and interrogations.

Bell and Nkomo dive straight to the heart of the matter. They base their findings on comprehensive personal interviews of African-American and white women working as managers or executives. Ultimately, the authors hit the reader over the head with the obvious: People from strikingly different backgrounds bring profound personal differences to the workplace. Too often, organizations stupidly attempt homogenizing everyone into minor variations on the existing (typically---older, white, and male) leadership theme. Unusually (Bell and Nkomo cited no such cases), organizations may wisely embrace the differences so that the organization and its people benefit from a more perceptive and inclusive world view.
Folks who need not spend their working hours "fitting in" contribute (A) more (B) less to the organization. Leaders who accept their people for who and what they are get (A) more (B) less from their subordinates. Guess where the authors suggest the readers take their outfits.

If you are wondering why the Black woman in your section of your company doesn't seem to want to socialize with you or seems guarded around her White co-workers or why the White women in your organization get all riled up about sexism but are silent when it comes to racism this is the book for you. I recommend this book along with Divided Sisters for those who really want Black and White women to unite in the workplace. These two tomes will give you more than a clue. They'll give you guidelines as how to build a truly "diverse" workplace where everyone is welcomed AS THEY ARE and not as stereotypes others want them to play out. If you are a Black woman, you'll understand why you see your work status merely as a "job" and not as a career and why you feel so much like an outsider looking in at your organization.
The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that I wanted more in-depth analysis of how the White female managers confronted the idea of Black women as equals (and not just on the job), something I've experienced that White women have a difficult time doing in the workplace.

This book is a must for anyone who is interested in the career paths of women in the corporate world. That would include spouses of, grown children of, and parents of women. It is based upon Harvard research including in-depth case studies of both white and black women from childhood to the present day, career journeys one will find fascinating. When the reader returns to his/her workplace after completing this book, diversity will take on a more significant meaning. This book is also a useful tool in college career development classes. Rather than a dull read, it keeps the reader coming back for more.
