Do you have to include stories in your program as a speaker? Only if you want to get the audience involved!.......2007-05-01
We all have a story to tell. If you are in a position where you influence people, lead organizational teams or speak to groups professionally, "Never Be Boring Again" must go on your short list of books to read. Doug teaches you how to incorporate humor into your message in a way that people laugh and have fun while they learn. His step-by-step method helps find the stories in you, and then shows you how to effectively use them to make your message authentic and truly delivered from the heart. I'm a professional speaker and use Doug's tips and techniques every time I'm on the platform. I highly recommend Doug Stevenson's book, "Never Be Boring Again"!
Doug Stevenson is the master!.......2007-04-23
Doug Stevenson knows how to create a winning presentation, and even better, he knows how to show us what he does. His book, "Never Be Boring Again," gives clear, step-by-step advice on the sure-fire way to craft presentations that will wow your audiences. He has organized his advice into a method which all speakers can employ. He himself is not one bit boring, and his own presentations are dynamite. The sweet success of his book is that he reveals his method to readers in a clear, easy-to-follow format. We still have to work and practice, but in his book we see what to do. He is the master!
Shallow, repetitive, no great insights but plenty of fluff.......2007-01-01
I am preparing a PowerPoint class for people who already know the mechanics of PowerPoint but need a class on how to better design slides and prepare a presentation. One of the topics will be preparing a script using story-telling techniques. I thought this book would offer some good advice, especially since the reviews were so good. I was sorely disappointed.
Ironically, this book bored me. I admit that I am a tough audience, but if you are a corporate trainer or speaker addressing a sophisticated, intelligent audience, the advice in this book may do more harm than good. The stories are not very interesting and I don't think it's good advice to tell readers they need to act out or pantomime parts of a story. That may work for some, but there are other ways by which a speaker can enliven a presentation or a talk. This book would be more appropriate for people doing info-commercials than for corporate speakers. In fact, as I was reading it, the book reminded me of the exaggerated gestures and pasted-on smiles that info-commercial people affect.
A great example of how stories are used to enliven a presentation and illustrate points is the book Blink by Malcolm Gladwell. I am listening to the book on CD while I do my daily walks. (I checked it out at the local library.) Gladwell (not the most exciting person in the world) had to use stories to get his points across and he does a masterful job. You will learn more about using stories from Blink than from Never Be Boring Again. And you won't be bored!
Good book-bad binding.......2006-08-02
I enjoyed the author's style and found several useful tips on improving my presentations. Given the accepted wisdom that an audience learns more from a speaker's visual presentation then his/her verbal presentation, his advice concerning acting out a presentation was very helpful.
I have a complaint about the quality of the book itself. After I had been reading the book off and on for about a week, the book's binding gave out and chucks of the book began falling off the binding.
Inspire Your Audience.......2006-01-28
"To be nobody but yourself - in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else- means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight, and never stop fighting. ~E. E. Cummings
Doug Stevenson is the creator of the Story Theater Method. As a master storytelling coach, he teaches the secrets of telling compelling stories and also explains how to add humor and fun to your presentation.
The quotes in this book are especially intriguing, especially the one by Virginia Satir. In just a few sentences, she explains how communication skills can determine the quality of your life.
How do you choose a story?
Where can you find stories?
What are the seven types of stories?
What can you say that your listeners won't expect?
Doug Stevenson teaches you how to entertain all while getting your message across. I remember the first time I gave a speech and said a line that caused the entire audience to laugh. It was shocking to me when it happened, it made my day and it was something I never forgot. While I am much more of an introvert, that extrovert moment in my life was definitely due to the fact that I said something the audience didn't expect.
This book will teach you all the essential skills for communicating with an audience and they will learn while they laugh.

Love him or hate him, no matter how you feel about Bill Gates, you've got to respect him. As the richest man in the world and leader of the most successful company of our day, Gates has achieved a level of success that even the Almighty might be jealous of. In Bill Gates Speaks, Janet Lowe captures much of the Gates legend by weaving together stories and quotes attributed to Gates in speeches, newspapers, and interviews in a short and easy-to-read volume. The book covers everything from Gates's time at Harvard to the construction of his "home" on the shores of Lake Washington near Seattle. The result is a well-rounded look at the man who has helped to shape our present more than any other individual alive today. --Harry C. Edwards
Book Description
Love him or hate him, Bill Gates has single-handedly shaped the technological future of the twenty-first century. Created through the independent research of bestselling author Janet Lowe, Bill Gates Speaks documents the life and ambitions of one of the world's most unique business and cultural leaders. The only book to compile Gates' actual words-culled from articles, newscasts, and interviews-this profile reveals what Gates has to say on everything from financing a start-up to running a conglomerate, developing technology, to raising a family.

Nothing "Original" But Still A Good Book for Young Teens.......2003-06-08
This is one of a series of books that covers highly successful, highly visible individuals and how they got that way. These books are targeted at school age teens to inspire them to follow their paths for success. The author seems to cover the life stories of Bill Gates and adds quotes where appropriate to boost the storyline. There are occasional segments on subjects related to Gates as shown in the Amazon's "Look in" review. It's an easy read with only 230 pages. If you read any of the other books such as "Gates" or "Hard Drive" you'll get the feeling of reading this book before. Since the work isn't original and seems to heavily reference other books I give it 3 stars. The only question I have is whether the author actual sat down with Bill Gates and talked to him or did she really just go to the library, the Internet, etc. to get info on the book. As a first book on Bill Gates life, it's still a good read for young adults looking to be inspired.
It's just a sumary of other books.......2001-04-27
It's an easy to read story of Gates, but there's nothing new here. In fact, the whole book is made up of quotes from other books and articles. You can't really tell if they are taken out of context or not. There's just not much original stuff here.
No Meat To This BooK!.......2001-01-18
I like to be told a story. Although the book starts with a good story on how Bill Gates got started, it quickly digresses. This book is an accumulation of facts and boring accounts about Bill Gates and Microsoft. It never gets into the meat of things. I would have liked to have read more about the litigations against Microsoft. Maybe some more about Nescape's lawsuit. It mentions very little about the Antitrust lawsuit that I was looking forward to learning about. Instead we get quotes from Bill Gates that do not enhance the book, but instead interrupt it. The author references websites about Microsoft's and the government's claims about the lawsuit. It's like the author got lazy. Don't waste your money on this book. A very big dissapointment!
Not what I thought.......2000-10-24
While this book was well written, I was dissapointed with what I learned about Bill Gates. There was not enough detail and the book was pieced together from a number of different quotes, which is ok for many biographies but the extent of the number of quotes compared to the varied sources did not complete the picture.
The books cover claimed 'Insight From The Worlds Greatest Entrepreneur' but I did not feel an insight.
Despite the above, if you like Bill Gates and want to learn a little more about him, I recommend this book. There are some fun stories and some things to be learned about the man. It is put together nicely, it makes a high claim but does not completely deliver on this claim.
A compelling "biography".......2000-04-08
I met and spoke to Mssr. Gates six years ago and he came across as very smart and very down-to-earth. This book captures the thoughts and actions of this genius very well. It's easy and pleasant to read, unlike other boring biographies (and Gates' own books :). I think it also gives the readers plenty to think about.

pleased that I didn't need two books -- just this one.......2006-01-26
I enjoyed reading this book because I felt that it saved me buying two books. It's got useful parenting tips -- sure some people may already know some thing but I learned a thing or two -- and it's got nuts and bolts advice on how to establish a home office, save money (which all us parents must do), and promote your home-based business or career. If you want to start out and/or are just mulling the prospect over in your mind, this will spark ideas and teach you things you need to know before you make a mistake.
Book does not match title.......2004-12-31
This book would be good if the title was "How to start an at-home business." But, as far as having anything to do with working at home with children, there is very little. The little it does have is basic parenting skills. From the title I expected the book to have tips about how to handle the children while working at home. It did not. The word "working" in the title is a present tense word meaning that you are currently at work in your home. This books gives instructions on how to begin to work at home. I am very disappointed and feel completely mislead by the title. I did not gain one thing from reading this book.
This book was very helpful!.......2002-08-25
If you have children at home and are trying to run a business from home, this book is a very soothing reference to indulge in.
Working at Home - The Ultimate Juggling Act.......2000-06-23
What I like most about this book is that it is organized into little "do-able" sections. As work at home parents, we all know you can't sit down and read a whole book at once! (Oh the luxury!) This book gives ideas not only about your new career, but how to make the home around you work with you. It really does have some helpful ideas!

Book Description
Until recently, JPMorgan Chase was two firms: JP Morgan, known for credit derivatives, fixed-income, and loan syndication, and Chase Manhattan, the third-largest commercial bank, which also has a burgeoning investment banking unit. At the outset, analysts hailed the merger as a winner. Of course, a string of problems have caused a few setbacks for the banking conglomerate. But, that said, this company is going nowhereit is the second-largest financial services company in the U.S. So, if you relish the thought of lots of responsibility and you're willing to play by traditional rules and put up with some bureaucracy, JPMorgan Chase could be the right place for you to build a long and lucrative career.
This guide answers questions like:
- How does JPMorgan Chase differ from all the other Wall Street firms?
- What do employees love most and like least about working for JPMorgan Chase?
- What's the firm's summer internship program like?
- What type of person succeeds at this firm?
- What areas of the firm are growing?
- What hot new developments should job seekers know about?

Really Useful.......2003-04-12
I found this guide to be really useful. Now I have a much better idea of what changes the company has gone through since it merged. Not only do I have a much better idea of what I'm getting into, but I feel much more confident going into interviews when that time, hopefully, comes.
Solid info; great read.......2003-03-07
I really enjoyed reading your JPMorgan guide. The writing flows, and the research and analysis of that research is flawless. The Days in the Life were "nice to haves," but you really hit on the "must-haves," which were things like where the company ranks, how its built itself up, where its heading, and how its organized. Of course, it's good to get info on what it's really like to work at JPMorgan. I have no illusions as to the fast pace and grueling hours, but I want to know that if I subject myself to these working conditions, that the people I do it with are my kind of people. I get the strong sense after reading this guide that they are. I'm looking forward to the interviews and discussing certain issues that have been discussed in the guide.
