Book Description
The discourse of Confucian Capitalism has been crucial in shaping our understanding of the brilliant economic successes of the Chinese diaspora all over the world. From this perspective, hard work, family values, and communal cohesion, as well as business practices based on sentiment, trust, and social networks, are the legendary means of explaining the wealth and commercial talent of these remarkable people. The book examines the subject of Chinese business' by exposing the enduring myth about the determining effects of these values and practices supposedly derived from Confucianism. Such myth relies on an ahistorical and essentialised notion of Chinese Culture', and brings into focus three sites of controversy: the economically driven Chinese subject, work-place relations characterised by consensus and cultural sharing, and an operating ethos of collectivist, pre-capitalist sociality. L In its interrogation of the discourse of Confucian capitalism, it is the aim of this book to arrive at a critically informed and socially realistic understanding of Chinese business. The author combines abstract analysis with examples from anthropological fieldwork among Chinese traders in Sarawak, East Malaysia. By anchoring theoretical discussion to real case studies, the multi- disciplinary approach of this book offers a useful insight into Chinese business activities, and contributes to current debates in cultural studies, economic anthropology, the economic performance of overseas Chinese, and neo-Confucian societies more generally.
Book Description
A proven approach for readers for marketing themselves and their ideas where and when it matters most
All successful people excel at selling at least one important product: themselves. Without the aid of PowerPoint or flip charts, these movers and shapers can impress key decision makers almost instantly even in everyday settings, such as elevators, hallways, and washrooms. In Get Them to See it Your Way, Right Away, top communication consultant and executive coach Ruth Sherman shows readers how to cultivate the communications skills needed to market themselves and their ideas in any setting and get the results they want. Taking a systematic, real-world approach, she coaches readers in how to:
- Make people want to listen to what they have to say
- Eliminate distractions and get an audience to focus on their message
- Pick up on verbal and nonverbal feedback
- Know which question to ask when there's time only for one
- Know when to back off, retool, and live to pitch another day
Customer Reviews:
Simple but not simplistic.......2006-08-04
This book is an excellent overview for newcomers to the principles of communication, and a good lead-in for more specific reading on the topic.
Perhaps more importantly, the book serves as a worthwhile reminder for those of us who consider ourselves knowledgable on this topic - and proficient at communicating with others. I find it to be an excellent check-list as to whether I am 'walking my talk' - and I would especially recommend the exercise to those reviewers who could find only a one-syllable word to describe the book - and a perjorative one at that. Good communication after all, requires critical self-observation.
The list of contents clearly enumerates the basic skills, and conveniently groups them into broad categories. Most importantly, Sherman makes the point that if you can't sell yourself (especially to yourself) you are unlikely to sell anything to anyone else - and most of all your ideas. For me, this, is a vital principal that is frequently missed in other books on communication.
My one reservation is the title: I found it somewhat misleading. Apart from this, I see the book as being simple, but far from simplistic. After all, intellectualism is not usually a good teacher.
A Primer to Surviving and Excelling in the Business World.......2006-08-01
I think Ruth Sherman's book is a must read for anyone that has not had the benefit of that successful role model or mentor in business. Reflecting upon my business courses in communications, I find the lessons taught to have been perfunctory and sterile. Sherman offers an approach that recasts business communication into the social and psychological milieu that is the reality of the business world. While her approach is common sense, the real world is full of examples of people frustrated with their lack of acceptance or persuasiveness for whom common sense is elusive. This will be the book that you will have wished your college professor included along with that dry tome about writing executive abstracts and memorandi. The latter will get you a job, while Sherman's book will get you a career (and friends!).
This book isn't for everyone. This book is just for people who take pride in themselves, pride in the way they are received by others and pride in their own work.
crap.......2005-12-11
luckily i borrowed this book from my university library instead of buying it. the cover design and naming of the book are fantastic but the content is all crap.
I would pass on this book in my humble opinion........2005-07-25
More work and deeper indepth research would make this book perfect. Sadly, in this case, its not true.
Oversimplified and nothing new.......2005-02-08
What a waste of time this book. Nothing new, all very common sense. A book for sales people without manners and for the social inept.

Are jobs searchable by geographic region? Is the careers section searchable by type of job? Is benefit plan data available? Are international jobs listed? Are specific job openings posted? Are internships listed? Is there a special college recruiting section? In addition, our profiles provide a description of the business, size of the firm by annual sales, and human resources contact name, address and phone, along with corporate phone and fax numbers. Plunkett's Employers' Internet Sites with Careers Information provides web site profiles on the companies that savvy job seekers want to know about today. Our data will take much of the worry out of a job search, and will make time spent online much more efficient and productive. Investing in IPOs, Version 2.0
ASIN: 0886464978 |
Amazon.com
Sooner or later, every investment product or strategy has its day in the sun, and these days, the investment vehicle that's getting the most attention is initial public offerings (IPOs). With prices of many new offerings more than doubling on the first day, it's no wonder small investors are trying to muscle in on the action. Tom Taulli's book Investing in IPOs is an excellent, easy-to-read guide that introduces most facets of the IPO business. An expert on the subject, Taulli writes online columns for several financial Web sites and appears regularly on CNN and CNBC. He describes many strategies for investing in IPOs, includes an examination of the mutual funds that buy them, and offers tips on how to avoid getting burned by fad offerings and shady brokers. He discusses management, balance sheets, business models, venture capitalists, and underwriters, and there's an excellent section on how to read a prospectus. As Taulli explains, "The best source of information on any IPO is its prospectus ... knowing what the risks are is important; realizing what they might mean to your investments is vital."
The Internet has changed the way IPO information and shares are distributed, making it easier for small investors to participate, and the book includes the best sources, on- and offline, for IPO intelligence and market research. As Taulli explains, IPOs are one of the best places in the financial markets to find huge gainers, but investing in IPOs is a game best played by those who understand the risks. If you're determined to get into the IPO marketplace (and can get stock), then this book is a great place start. --Scott Harrison
Book Description
THE book for investors on IPOs--getting in on the next Yahoo! or Home Depot. How can individual investors safely take part in the tantalizing opportunities--and huge profit potential--presented by IPOs? They can learn the tools to spot the right stocks and weigh the potential risks against the rewards. In "Investing in IPOs," an astute, easy-to-understand guide, IPO expert Tom Taulli uses dozens of real examples to explain IPOs and the IPO market. He reveals the best ways to investigate before investing, shows how to read an IPO prospectus, explains how to spot the next hot-ticket stock, and includes tips on how to avoid getting burned by fad IPOs and shady brokers. What profit-minded investor doesn't wish he had been in on wildly successful IPOs such as Home Depot or Intel? (or Amazon for that matter!) Until recently, investors had to be Wall Street insiders to take part in an IPO. The Internet era has changed all that--now information and investment opportunities are available to anyone who knows where to look and how to get start. Because of the surge in entrepreneurial ventures, IPOs will; just keep coming--whether the stock market is soaring or sinking. That reality means even more choices for investors, and better chances to earn outstanding profits. This book, the first of its kind, shows investors how to take full advantage of IPO opportunities. "Investing in IPOs" features the clear, practical advice you need: The mechanics of IPOs--what to expect and how they work; IPOs in the high-tech sector, international markets, and IPO mutual funds; the best times to get into--and out of--an IPO; spotting IPOs that will be profitable for the long haul; dozens of examples of successful IPOs and why they worked.
Customer Reviews:
A Good Read!.......2001-04-17
Investing in IPOs describes the process behind taking a private company public in the United States. The book lists the players in an initial public offering and describes the documents that must be filed with securities regulators. It also offers suggestions about what characteristics lead to successful IPOs, such as a history of profits, a strong management team and a lack of strong competition. Also noteworthy are the advance warning signs which point to losers. These signs include pending lawsuits, low-price stock and recently changed business plans. We [...] recommend this book with its exhaustive and useful look at the IPO process to investors and to companies pondering an IPO. This clearly written book includes specific examples that use real-world companies to illustrate points.
Full of Useful Information!.......2000-04-27
Yes, this book has large print and is an easy read. Don't let that fool you; it's loaded with useful information! In very concise terms, "Investing in IPOs" quickly brought me (a beginning investor) to the point where I understand what to look for in an IPO and where to find that information.
Taulli also addresses the sad reality that most individual investors are stuck on the outside when the initial offering happens. But he offers tips to tell you the best time to jump in if you've missed the first offering.
Read this book with a highligher in hand because you will be going back to it. It's a great launching point, though not a single source for all you'll ever need to know. On the other hand, the questions I'm now looking to answer are questions I didn't even know to ask before reading this book.
Lacks realism.......2000-03-27
The information in this book is readily available in the educational features of E-Trade and other online investing sources. The author doesn't address the reality that Fidelity picks IPO recipients based on size and longevity of account (hence the rich get richer) and E-Trade prefers daytraders and assigns others randomly. The volume at E-Trade is so high... good luck to get any shares at all. Both require the invenstor keep the shares for a set number of days which is usually after the steller 120% rise is over. I was disappointed in the book. Not worth the money if you have taken advantage of free internet info.
nice introductory text.......1999-10-13
This book is a good introduction to the topic of IPOs, and contains a bevy of information that will be mostly relevant for the beginning (or uninitiated) investor interested in IPOs (how's that for consonance?). I wish the book went into more detail on some of the headier subjects, esp. company analysis. Still, it's a good read.
This book is a joke - written for a child.......1999-10-02
I feel it was useless to have so many filler pages with no information on them. It deceives the reader that there is more than there is. IPO should stand for "I Paid Out" too much for this book!
Book Description
This book is an entire course, an easy in-depth guide to accomplishing one’s dreams in life. Structured in results-minded lessons and interwoven with keys that offer sudden moments of understanding, the book helps the reader grasp new ways of thinking of, and attaining, wealth and fulfillment by doing what we love and adhering to compassionate values. Lesson topics include: “Imagine your ideal scene,” “Discover your core beliefs, and learn how to change them,” and “Grow at your own pace.” Author Marc Allen offers both a life-changing philosophy and the specific tools — the business plan, the vocabulary, even resources for financing — needed to live the dream.

The Millionaire course.......2007-10-15
The Millionaire course is a practical guide to getting clear on what you want for your life, creating a vision, setting your goals and following though on a daily basis. There is a lot of repetition, which is good, because we need reminders so as to remember on a daily basis what we are working towards and to remember to keep your vision contantly in your mind until you get there, and then you create a new one.
Maggie Erotokritou, author of Seeds of Transformation, A 52 Step Journey to Enlightenment
Practical at a high level........2006-06-11
I may have a slight different perspective on this book since I've only listened to the audio version of it. One thing you have to remember is that this book was written as a "Visionary Plan"; it is by no means an in depth, step-by-step process on how to become a millionaire. The ideas Marc discusses are intended to be practical approaches to disciplining your mind, setting goals, and realizing our full potential. Much of the book tends to focus on overcoming the negative obsticles of our own minds.
I give it only 4 stars because although it's intended to be a high level approach, at times it can be a bit too abstract. I wish Marc would have given further details about how he started his company, along with more concrete examples of how his techniques helped him achieve financial success. Convincing yourself that you can fly is fine, but ultimately the dirt is in the details.
Worthy of SIX Stars!!!.......2006-05-20
I am quite impressed with the easy reading of "The Millionaire Course," by Marc Allen. So many motivational books out there go on and on about religion. Allen uses some quoted bibical passages but it's not overkill. The information is truly worth millions of dollars but Allen eloquently explains that the true Millionaire mindset is of abundance and not of financial wealth. There are unhappy millionaires and happy paupers out there. You get out of life what you put into life. The books contains keys to life... some good, some not so good. There are tips on how to negotiate, how to use honesty and integrity in life and business, and how to become a success through thinking like a success. I definately recommend this book and trying some of the keys and exercises that Allen presents. The most powerful exercise is to WRITE your goals as a plan to achieving them. This book will not make you a millionaire overnight but will help you realize the only hinderance to becoming successful is YOU. Write down Goal #1: Purchase "The Millionaire Course" by Marc Allen. Goal #2: Eliminate negative thinking from my life. Goal #3: ....
This Book Changed My Experience Of Plans.......2006-01-23
I love this book! I am appreciating so much how it has inspired and guided me to do something I never thought I'd like to do -- plan. His step-by-step guide to planning has opened new doors for me, and helped me attract new ideas and new projects I never would have received before. I am entirely wow-ed by the way that a heartfelt plan can attract and flow energy to something I desire. I found it very easy to adapt his ideas to my own intuitive way of thinking and being, and that is working wonders for me now.
Thank you, Marc Allen.
For Those Who Dare To Dream..............2006-01-22
In my work as a professional and personal coach there often comes a point where my client gets an "aha!" about what they really want, who they really are and how they want to live their life. Then the dreaded "yeah, but" closely follows: "Yeah, but what will people think?" "Yeah, but how will I pay the mortgage?" "Yeah, but I'm not qualified!"
Don't misunderstand me. These are legitimate questions that deserve honest consideration. This book offers wise counsel and proven methods for how to reach that place of radical fulfillment where money is no longer the stumbling block standing in the way. The author, Marc Allen, shares his own story of how he moved from a bare and meager existence to millionaire status. More importantly he shows how he stepped into a life of meaning and passion while maintaining his authentic self. I love this book and recommend it highly, along with Allen's other works: A Visionary Life, Visionary Business, and The Ten Percent Solution.
Book Description
Through trial and error, Marc Allen discovered a specific set of principles to help people attain financial success and lasting satisfaction while doing what they love. The tools are simple, and everyone has them: "a miraculous body, a phenomenal brain, and a vast and powerful subconscious mind. Now it's just a matter of focusing them in the right direction." In his books and seminars, Allen shows how to create one's ideal scene; discover higher purpose; write a business plan simply and effectively; find capital to start a business; and discover the benefits of adversity. Listeners can gain this wisdom at their convenience in this three-CD set. Recorded live at the author's seminars, this is an audio original — not an audio version of the author's book of the same name. Noted for his humorous, relaxed style, Allen offers both inspiration and instruction in The Millionaire Course Seminar, putting the listener on the right track both philosophically and psychologically. Not simply a set of motivational ideas, the course is a powerful plan for creating a life of material and spiritual abundance.

not great, not bad..........2007-01-11
This is ok. If you can see past all the new age stuff, then you might like it. This person is of the school of thought of Zen, and Eckhart Tolle, so if you like that stuff, I recommend this audio book.
"Misleading".......2005-02-24
This book/CD would never have been published if the author wasn't also the publisher. I guess once your rich you can get away with a lot. I'm just glad I checked it out at the library! If you are into new-age/metaphysical mumbo-jumbo you'll love this. It reeked of "A Course in Miracles", and listening to Marc Allen reminded me a lot of Wayne Dyer (voice and monotone). After trashing this work I will point out that the author did speak about prioritizing and acting on your dreams. These two attributes alone should account for at least 3 stars. I just found it boring, and am sick of authors like Marc Allen, Donald Trump, Robert Kiyosaki, Mark Fisher, Anthony Robbins, etc. throwing the word 'millionaire' or 'billionaire' into the title--just to trap the unaware. I've listened to tons of the stuff, read the books and tried some of the methods. I aint rich yet. Hey, I've got an idea! Maybe I should write a book...I'll call it "Let's All Be Millionaires (or Billionaires). At least I'll get rich!
Advice beyond business.......2004-04-22
This audio book has words of wisdom from a self-made millionaire who takes a more relaxed approach to life's challenges and situations than most `Type A' success stories. The main focus here is learning to do what you love and creating a career out of it. Some of the lesson topics include: "Imagine your ideal scene," "Discover your core beliefs, and learn how to change them," and "Grow at your own pace.
