There is an apparently endless supply of books about writing. Very few of those books, surprisingly, offer a thorough and scholarly approach to the basics: words, sentences, and paragraphs. The New Oxford Guide to Writing does. According to author Thomas S. Kane, writing is "an exercise of mind requiring the mastery of techniques anyone can learn." Kane's not claiming he can create a genius, but, as he says in his introduction, "you don't have to be a genius to write clear, effective English." The writing that Kane refers to here is expository and persuasive in nature--writing most likely to be required in day-to-day life. In great detail Kane explores the building of an essay, the development of paragraphs, the styling of sentences, the use of diction, and, finally, issues of punctuation. It is unlikely that very many writers have scrutinized the building blocks of language the way Kane has, but it's never too late. Rare is the sourcebook that can offer so much both to beginners and experts alike. And anyone who loves words will thrill to encounter--if he or she hasn't done so already--the freight-train sentence, parataxis, the triadic sentence, polysyndeton, asyndeton, collocation, and zeugma. --Jane Steinberg

      Book Description

Many books on writing tell you how to think more creatively, how to conjure up an idea from scratch. Many, once you have an idea, show you how to express it clearly and elegantly. And many handbooks offer reliable advice on the use of commas, semicolons, and so forth. But The New Oxford Guide to Writing does all three, so that no matter where you find yourself in the writing process--from the daunting look of a blank page, to the rough draft that needs shaping, to the small but important questions of punctuation--you will find what you need in one handy volume. Highlighted by numerous examples of successful prose--including marvelous, brief excerpts from Mark Twain, Joan Didion, H.L. Mencken, E.B. White, and Annie Dillard--this stimulating volume covers the entire subject step-by-step, clearly and authoritatively. It shows: * How to use commonplace books and journals to store ideas, how to brainstorm, how to explore a potential topic systematically * How to use a statement of purpose or an outline to give preliminary shape to your material, how to use drafts and revisions (and more revisions) to refine your ideas * How to open an essay clearly and interestingly, how to lead the reader subtly, how to use qualifications to express complexity without sacrificing impact * How to organize ideas into a coherent paragraph, how to vary sentence structure and length for variety and emphasis * How to select words that convey both information and point of view * And much, much more In addition, it contains a useful appendix on punctuation, ranging from commas and periods to underlining and capitalization. Whether you write for business or for pleasure, whether you are a beginner or an experienced pro, The New Oxford Guide to Writing is an essential addition to your reference library, providing abundant assistance and encouragement to write with more clarity, more color, and more force.

5 out of 5 stars I am terribly upset I didn't learn of it sooner........2005-01-03

It's great. Add it to a couple of books on basic grammar and usage and you're ducky.

5 out of 5 stars Know all the techniques and why they work. Write with class........2001-07-20

This is the best book on writing I've read so far. It would be more precise to say this is a book on how to dress your thoughts in words most effectively.

I still remember an illustrative example somewhere in the initial pages. What is not so good about the sentence "She dresses in a beaatuful manner" ?. Well, it becomes more effective when written as "She dresses beautifully". In the long phrase "in a beautiful manner", the focus is dissipated over many words. Whereas, "beautifully" compresses meaning in one word and what's more, it sits at the end of the sentence, tending to stay in the reader's mind longer.

The book is full of such fine points and subtle techniques. Kane has taken a wonderfully orderly approach to teaching the writing process right from the basic element - the sentence, to the whole picture - the essay. Gradually building layer on layer, you see how the parts make the whole and how different aspects of writing contribute to the reader's final experience.

There are many meaningful exercises that will make you understand the huge number of tehcniques. Another important feature of the book is its examples of different types and styles of writing taken from a wide range of well known authors -Bertrand Russell, Samuel Johnson, E B White, Virginia Woolf, G K Chesterton, H G Wells, Mark Twain and so on. Kane takes each excerpt from these authors and explains why they work.

With a little effort, you can start writing almost as well as them, at least you'll know how those great authors thought before penning their ideas.

The book is set in very eye-pleasing font and well presented. Get the hardback if you can. If you're really interested in writing, this is a book you'll want to treasure.

5 out of 5 stars The essential book for writing instructors.......2001-02-06

The New Oxford Guide to Writing is vastly superior to the grammar manuals and reference books that writing instructors usually assign their students. Kane doesn't merely prescribe rules for students to memorize; he imparts genuine understanding of the mechanics and conventions of good prose and takes you through the entire writing process, from facing a blank page to polishing a finished piece. By demystifying this process, Kane's guide empowers students to find their own voices and to keep improving their skills for years to come.

Everyone, from beginner to professional, should have a copy of this book.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining and useful.......1999-11-24

The entertaining aspect is the quotations illustrating various techniques of style. The useful aspect is the identification of many features of style unnoticed by me.

It may indicate the age of the author that on p. 32 he recommends "If you type .... Keep the keys clean and invest now and then in a new ribbon." He has no special advice for users of a word processor, and I'd guess he never used one. He refers to Webster's Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary, which gives an idea of how new "new" is.

I'd put this book at a high-school to first-year college level. The author's style is that of a friendly and knowledgable advisor, pedantic at times, but usually not.

I found the examples really made the points, and the overall view of techniques shows what can be done.

      Book Description

The New Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors is the essential A-Z guide for everyone who works with words. Drawing on the expertise of the Oxford Dictionaries department, it provides authoritative advice on those words and names which raise questions time after time because of spelling, capitalization, hyphenation, or cultural or historical context. As well as lexical terms, there are many proper names included: from place names and personal names to names of institutions, literary references, and books of the Bible. Entries give full coverage of recommended spellings, variant forms, confusable words, hyphenation, capitalization, foreign and specialist terms, proper names, and abbreviations. The New Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors follows in the footsteps of its illustrious predecessor The Authors' and Printers' Dictionary, published in 1905, and later called Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors; for the centenary year, the entries have been reselected, and the text has been entirely rewritten. The Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors has long been an indispensable part of any editor's reference shelf; now, the text is even more useful than before, and appears in a new handbook size. It is an essential tool for writers, editors, publishers, journalists, and web editors, and together with New Hart's Rules and the New Oxford Spelling Dictionary forms the complete editorial reference set.

5 out of 5 stars A Spelling Dictionary for Our Time.......2007-03-19

Most of the spelling dictionaries I've bought are limited to 20, 40, or 50 thousand words. Considering the ongoing growth in English vocabulary a dictionary of larger capacity has been overdue. At last Oxford press has put out one appropriate to the 21st centuary. As a reference book for writing, it is an excellent choice.

5 out of 5 stars Letter Writing Tips for Spanish Writers.......2000-09-10

If you're looking for a reference book that will allow one to write the perfect letter in Spanish, then this 94-page book is for you. Author Mary H. Jackson does an excellent job of providing examples of letters written for personal and business purposes. This book, which is published by the great reference staff at Passport Books, is an inexpensive and useful guide to allow anyone to write letters in Spanish with little or no help at all. Of course, it would be helpful to have knowledge of the Spanish language before writing any letter, however if you're a student or someone who communicates infrequently with a pen pal, friend, or anyone else in Spanish, this book will allow you in your letter writing.

The book's compact size and price are extra reasons to purchase it. I also recommend "Cassell's Colloquial Spanish: A Handbook of Idiomatic Usage" if you want to improve your grammatical knowledge of Spanish. "Cassell's Colloquial Spanish" is the best book on Spanish grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure on the market, and addition with the "Guide to Correspondence in Spanish," I can guarantee that you will be writing like a professional is a matter of time.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference Guide.......1998-09-18

This book is a great reference guide to writing business correspondence in Spanish. It provides example letters that can be used in developing correspondence which recognizes the cultural differences in the style and structure between letters written in Spanish and English. This book has been very useful in my work of responding to customer billing disputes.

5 out of 5 stars A Spanish-language guide to the art of writing letters........1997-05-17

"Guide to Correspondence in Spanish / Guia de correspondencia espanola" is a very up-to-date and useful guide for writing all kinds of letters in Spanish. While the title suggests that the book might be completely bilingual, the book is written entirely in Spanish. There is a bilingual glossary included, but the text itself is not translated to English. This book can be used by anyone with a good knowledge of written Spanish. It provides the fine points of etiquette and proper format for writing both business and personal letters. Best of all, the book includes many sample letters and lists of useful phrases and abbreviations. Each chapter includes practice exercises which make the book potentially useful as a text book

                    Book Description

This book looks at the "rules" of investing. Not economic rules, but the rules that the "players" are using, i.e. the broker, brokerage house, and analysts, along with their personal agendas. Until the investor understands the "rules" the other players are using, it's very tough to "win" the game, i.e. accumulate more chips. Stories and illustrations that amuse and educate.

Laura Day has sold millions of copies of Practical Intuition and continues her advice here with tips for improving your career using your own intuitive skills. She says that people are more apt to use their intuition about commonplace issues than they are about investment or business practices, a horrible waste of intuitive powers. Through dozens of exercises, Day describes how you can boost your intuitive power, "become" your competition, and better predict the future. Day makes no guarantees that you'll pick the next blue-chip bond or invent the next wheel, but she does assert that your life can't help but improve if you take her ideas to heart. This book is a combination of Jon Kabat-Zinn's, mindfulness meditation theories and What Color is Your Parachute-ish self-reflection.

3 out of 5 stars powerful individual with good ideas.......2007-05-09

Laura Day is on to something. One might feel a bit overwhelmed by the "new age" tone of the book but pay attention. She has a powerful perspective. I think this book and "Welcome to Your Crisis" are even better than "The Circle"..they have parctical, hands on advice. Not necessarily for what I would term a crisis - more a dilemma or feeling "stuck".

5 out of 5 stars Getting the Right Brain in on the Wealth Game.......2007-03-18

This is an ideal book for those who are entrepreneurial and in a position professionally where the skill of intuitive ability is demanded. I often think that Richard Branson and Madonna are highly intuitive in their enterprises. If you want to have both brains focusing on wealth creating, Laura Day provides excercises to get the ball rolling. Learn to make your right brain and left brain best friends to seize opportunities daily.

                    4 out of 5 stars A good book.......2006-07-07

This is a good book it's longer then some of her other ones and it has a lot more exercises in it then some of her other books so unless you have a lot of time on your hands it will take a while to read it. But, other then that it is a good book and I did enjoy it. I'm going to start to read practical intuition in love.

5 out of 5 stars Reframes Thinking on Intuition.......2002-07-15

From a practical standpoint, Day separates thinking of emotions, pure logic and reasoning from intuition. She defines this intuitive thinking as logical and, essential for success. Her thoughts are quite compelling. Rather than the pure gut feeling or abstractions that generally constitute intuition, Day develops an understanding of how this skill can be cultivated from both thought and feeling. Rather than an illogical urge, it becomes a developed sense. The exercises and examples extensively developed empower the reader to adapt this skill for personal achievement. A good read.

4 out of 5 stars Practical as promised.......2002-04-12

As promised in the title this book is highly practical with easy to understand exercises that train your intuition. Doing the exercises unlocks your intuitive potential and answers questions you didn't even know you were asking.
                    Highly recommended!
